well dressed freedom day conference. and 2nd, to the 4th of may 2024 of the the i don't want elizabeth put on them and, or how would they talk stories on elders they are. and we begin with some breaking news out of new york, where police have enter the columbia university and begun to arrest students occupying a historic school. after they've barricaded themselves inside. the university said as begun suspending students refusing to meet a deadline to abandon the announcement that spring in our correspondence. today's a bo she's live for was outside columbia university in new york. and today is that
4:31 am
they was an expectation earlier that police would come to columbia. what's happening there now? while i'm right in front of columbia university right in front of hamilton, there's dozens and dozens of police officers. but i'm calling you to remove the students that are currently inside hamilton. let's not forget what happened here. monday evening. a group of students that were inside columbia university, occupied hamilton whole. the renamed it as hender a job, who's a 6 year old girl who was killed in garza. there they are right now. if you can see where i am, you can see that police, they came in with a truck. now there's a stair, they have broken a window, they're going inside the building, probably to detain the students that are inside this building. there's been lots of tension in the last hour. we've been seeing police coming from different sides of the office or right now there's dozens of students who are also here. they've been
4:32 am
protesting all day. they've been coming here to support their other students who are inside of columbia university. they both inside columbia university. they being single day that they're under siege because he's very early in the morning. this come university has been completely isolated. all the students inside i've been asked to for food and water, among other things on the students that are on the side have been bringing it in. but as you can see right now, the police officers are moving into the building. one by one is not clear yet how they're going to carry out this operation. but we have already seen at least 7 or 8 students that were outside and close to the gate inside of the university being detained. and it's very, very likely that something like this will happen again. columbia university has been threatening the students that are inside with expulsion. that's the
4:33 am
waste thing. they did not leave the building on monday if there was already a deadline that those that we made inside and being transmitted in this fit. and that is happening inside in the middle of the campus that given the students until 2 pm, no time on monday for them to leave. but if not, the face suspension. so now they're not always facing suspension expansion, but also arrest because of the police officers that we're seeing roadside where i am right now. yeah, incredibly, 10 scenes the at columbia university, as, as you say today is a, we can see those police officers moving and says things themselves and through the window of have them to him. so today is a, do we have an idea of the number of students who are inside that whole or it's not clear how many have remained inside. we do know we are set to one of the students earlier today,
4:34 am
and then we're not sure because what happened is that on monday there were hundreds of students inside. but those who remained in, in, in, inside colombo, columbia university. many of them left and went to their homes or to the dorms outside of the main town, post work for me. so it's not clear yet how many are inside, but there are many others were outside the showing their support for the university students. you can see them right here where we are right now. they're saying shame on columbia university. let's not forget what many of the students have been demanding. they happen to be managing financial transparency. they wants columbia university to stop using the money the students face every year for them to be able to start a year from being invested in companies that they say are profiting from those war . they're also demanding an amnesty for many of the students and faculty members. let's not forget about the many of the faculty inside of columbia university. i'd
4:35 am
be supporting on protecting the students. so they want to nap just the uh, from uh, columbia university of forties that they won't be disagreeing, sites being risking expulsion or suspension among other things. so we have the press, we're not allowed to move from what we're right behind defense. we've been everyone that is crossing this fence has been structured with the rest of your on the streets, and that's why we are remaining here. but you can see that there's hundreds of police officers not totally where i am, but completely surrounding this compos, accomplish that is between broadway avenue in new york city and answered in avenue . and you can see right on the window. also, what is known as the hamilton hall is that the students have roommate rename, defend hose. they're continue to go inside this building, probably to remove the students by force.
4:36 am
and today's as us speaking this week, we have seen live pictures of police taking away a few people. now we don't know if these people have been taken from inside, haven't, and all of that indeed part of that group that's inside the field. but certainly police, i once again taking protest as a way and you know, when we were speaking a couple of hours ago today. so we were talking about how it's not just students who are protesting at columbia that has been in march through new york city, a group of protest as who had been visiting different university campuses in new york and came to columbia to show their support filled the protest is that especially those who barricaded themselves inside the whole this was certainly where we've been here all day. and there were dozens of protesters these fleet that most waiting outside of columbia university on the gate
4:37 am
that you can see right in front of me. they've been here all day showing their support for the students that remain inside. and while they were protesting, they're not even on the streets, but right close to a very, very close to the gate. another demonstration passed in front of us and they were going to other campuses in new york city. apparently they went to city college and they tried to try it without a problem set there. there were not allowed to do that. let's not forget that earlier today. we heard a press conference from the new york city police department where they were already warding students and warning students. for example, if you're trying to force their children from where they are right now, because they were facing arrest. the other thing that they were saying is that the pro, just inside the time provide me the info created by outside or is not just by students . and they said that this is something that increases the danger or to increase the
4:38 am
danger of this ongoing situation. here we cannot confirm that when you talk to students, they say that they are the only ones carrying out reactions to shed light on what is happening in god. so they want to set lights to the killing that is happening. and so they want to save lives, so the displacement that is happening in gaza, they want to shed light on the hunger that is happening in gaza. so so it's really actually said before there's been protests on the streets across new york city. there's been other campuses where there are other problems that's ongoing. for example, downtown downtown, off of manhattan, new york university, there's another group of students protesting there. i know the ones to a college that about to kilometer from where we are. but the biggest filters happen here mostly, cuz this is the place that the biggest thing 10 vents yeah, has been going on. where on april the 17 and 18 over
4:39 am
a 100 students were detained and taken from this university. that was severely critic criticized of the actions taken by the president of columbia university. and because of holding law enforcement, but certainly it's not clear how this operation is going on. but certainly there's the police officers right now. there's other dozens of students who remain here, and there's some tension where we are right now. yeah, today is a and since april 17, since those arrests at columbia university, i believe that something like at least $900.00 students have been arrested at universities around the united states columbia. as one is not the 1st us university which sol protests against as well as long gaza. and it's really hasn't spied demonstrations around the country at universities around the country, hasn't it? certainly this is the university very ways hired. i moved bands throughout the country. there's a long tradition in the united states from carrington god,
4:40 am
what they called civil disobedience. protests columbia university has been in back of the 1960 students did exactly the same thing that happened here on monday. and they took over hamilton hall to protest that we have no more they were also arrested. and that's what many believe that is kind of happened. 2 nights of the police is moving into the building. but what is happening here in columbia is what is tired. what is happening all around the country we've seen protesting california in texas, and so a many, many other places across the country and the students here in the states. but even though if they are arrested over if the people inside arrested, they will continue with this movement that i said before, they want to make sure that their voices are heard. but at the same time, there's things. so they're not the story of the story, isn't gas. that right now, the story is with the palestinian people in garza,
4:41 am
but also in the west bank. they had been demanding a man to occupation. they had been demanding an end to general side, so suddenly stopped. i said people who are saying they will remain here, talk to you yet, how long they'll be allowed to remain. here, we've already seen at least 7 or 8 students that have been detained. they were not inside the building. there were just, these were processors on the street outside of the gates and we're taking that by the police just a few minutes ago. we had to raise that. we sold the pictures of that happening. so it's good to know that those are for testers. you're telling us that you know, that they're not, the protest is and fabricated themselves inside hamilton, who you're saying, they're actually just peaceful protest as who who are outside. and you know, the things that protest as a point. and for that, you talked about that component for an end to, as well as one, gaza, and also the mistreatment of palestinians and the occupied westbank across the occupied territories. these students and these protests is willing to risk so much
4:42 am
for that. i mean, they're continuing their protests despite being suspended, despite being arrested, despite the threats of more suspensions and arrest the most. certainly we've been talking to them this past few days and that they say that they're willing to pay suspension, expulsion even arrest, which is what we're seeing. that is happening right now. many of them say that they even have the support of their parents. let's not forget that many of the students that come to columbia university. this is an ivy league university. it is a very expensive university student space, thousands of dollars to be able to study here. and in spite of that, would they're willing to risk it all to shed light on what is happening in gaza. they're also say that they do not want the money that they have been paying to be fund. ah, the israel, what they call the is well general side in garza. and that's why they have been demanding divestment. this is, for example,
4:43 am
an end to the investment of columbia university funds and companies that you know way of profiting from the war on guys out there also demanding, for example, financial transparency. many of the students we have spoken to see that they would like to be able to vote on how columbia university uses the money that they've paid . so it's certainly, you know, the students have lots of demands. they have been willing to risk it. all, many of them are outside the campus right now that we're not allowed to go back in after the university was completely shut down after another group of students that is currently inside barricaded themselves inside a hamilton. oh let us, i said before, on the evening off monday evening in the middle of the night they went inside, they broke a window, they displayed a flag where they said that hamilton hall was going to be name from now won a skins holler. this is after a 6 year old girl that was killed in guys out by these riley military. they are the
4:44 am
ones that it is supposed the police that have been entering the building. we're not seeing them now. let me show you. just a bit of what we're seeing here. we're seeing that the police, it's outside. we already saw that the police went inside. it's not clear yet what is happening there. at this point, we're not seeing either tier guards just the lights are wrong. it's not clear what is having to happen there, but it is expected that the students that remain there will be arrested as many of the students that have been protesting aside outside, have been already been arrested on the they've been taken towards another part outside the compos yeah, again, an incredibly time situation because over the last you know, 15 minutes we'll be looking at pictures, live pictures of police offices, climbing up to that window and entering through that window. now the inside, we don't know what's happening between them and the students in fabricate to themselves and sides since monday since monday evening. today's, i think it's also really important to remind of you is at this point,
4:45 am
that while the focus has been on students who have been protesting and number of faculty, professors across american universities have also been protesting and have also been arrested. most certainly, i mean, side columbia university. this is, has been extremely an interesting process because the students have any compliments in the middle of the campus and they're protected by a group of activities or surrounding them the wearing. on monday they were wearing orange best. they were not allowing anyone near the beach in thompson where is that, where that is taking place. many of the faculty said that they're not formally supporting the students. they support the student's life room, so they support freedom of speech. they say that they're, you know, remain by the students side. that's quite interesting that many of the students we have also spoken to. they're saying that the demonstrations,
4:46 am
such as this one has been something that they've made columbia proud in the past. the from the stock in the 19 fifties and the 1980s in the 1990 students that took place in this university. and that now are being criticized by the columbia university starting to end the president for the same time by, by many, many other so certainly members of columbia university faculty, some of them are very critical of what is happening here in columbia university. but many others have been here with the students willing to face the rest and also at risk of being fired of harassment. you know, many of the, of the faculty we have spoken to are a free because they say that they're being threatens. but they have received messages with threats to their families and to them. many of the students and the sections who have been covering the spaces not only to, to get away high during the density, but also to,
4:47 am
to protect themselves with what is happening outside the complex. you know, this, the threats that many of them have been receiving through social media and in many, many other ways. yeah, and one of the other ways is known as doc saying, isn't it today is a when you know the students who have spoken out against israel school on dos since october 7th. we have seen a campaign by pro, as well. groups of releasing the students or of the information online so that they are deemed as unattractive or in other, you know, ineligible and the job market is hosted. they leave university and the you know, fence. we accused of anti semitism to your point earlier today is a when you talk about, you know, how columbia has been the size of many protests, many very important protests and protest movements over the past few decades with hud many times over the last 6 months about how colombia was often columbia university was often on the wrong side of history, especially, you know,
4:48 am
with things like the vietnam war with clamping down on those protests but mason saying they've taken credit for those protests and hamilton, who behind you is very significant as being the size of those very important protests in us history. it certainly handles on whole wide here was a place where many protesting was also taken back in the 96 feet by no totally people that were protesting the vietnam war. but also those things testing against discrimination. and that's a those protested they are. many of the faculty members tell us makes columbia proud. well, many of the students we have spoken to say that. so that's exactly what they're saying. that this type of protest, this civil disobedience, is taken to the st. taken to the campus, taking the classes,
4:49 am
fighting for what they believe is right, is what has made many universities in the united states proud of because of, of the sites that have happened in the past in this country's history. and what is happening here right now, the students, i'm the people we have spoken to say that they're standing on the right side of history. they're saying that they're denouncing a genocide. they're seeing what is happening in gaza right now. they're seeing, for example, what is riley officials, the members of the cabinet have said where they're literally asking for pilots being used to be removed from gaza. this people are saying that there's a general side on going with a millions of people that have been displaced with millions of people that are facing hunger with a thousands of people that have been killed among them, women and children. and that's why people who are saying that right now, they're standing on the right side of history. that's why they're insisting

a bit of remain here, where we are right now outside, showing their support for those who have dared to take hamilton, phone for those who have barricaded themselves. and they're calling for an end to the war. and garza calling for an end to what they call is and justice calling to an end for what they're calling or what they're saying is a genocide yesterday is a and the we, we've even heard from the united nations human rights office who has really spoken out against how these protest is being treated in the united states or study, we have seen what has been going on, not only fear in columbia university back on april 17th to an 18 what at least a 100 students were detained in columbia university presidents, worst critics, homes have an increase because of those action where we saw at least a 100 students were detained. there was taking
4:51 am
a moment. i'm also starting team members. and we saw what happened in austin on monday again with dozens of students and professors being taken on the 10 just for being a, carrying out a pro protest. well, what the police are saying right now is that those who have fabricated themselves inside hamilton hose that the protesters now pull him just pause. they're saying that they have been persuaded by outside or is, there is no way that something like this has happened. this is something that the student denied the students say that they're being intimidated that it's not clear yet what is going to happen. but many of the students we have spanking spoken to. they're saying that this is not right that nobody else has a is taking part of the proteins. they have been extremely careful of how they handle this process so far. when you go inside campus, you see being compliments for the students. do not allow everyone and they do not allow the media and this is completely anyway isolated from the rest of the

university. i'm there, you see professors and factual to for worrying orange best for no, no, i don't want anyone to go in. so it's up to you yet. how this type of protest has been infiltrated, which is what the police is saying. what i understand is that at this point, the students felt that they needed to take further actions to continue to draw attention to what they want to do. our attention on that is what is happening in guys. as i said before, the students are not saying they are the story. them not want our eyes on them. they want be eyes on what is happening in gaza right now. they want to rise on the suffering that is happening in gaza right now and today. so with the students facing so many accusations, as you said, um, not necessarily the students themselves, but the protest for being, quote unquote infiltration. but also the, you know, the students facing very serious allegation constantly of anti semitism. and you touched on this, you know, can you give us an idea of exactly what the protests look like and what happened
4:53 am
this as well, such and you, i mean what the students are saying and i'm one of the protesters. there's many jewish students who have joined in this protest as well. there's an organizations, for example, that is called the jewish voices for peace. for part of this demonstration is not here yet, whether they are inside this, hamilton hall, where the students have barricaded themselves. we do not know how many students are inside there, but they're certainly part of being compromised. and also, for example, i'm on the spectrum team member. we have been able to interview many professors. we're also jewish, who say that they stand with the students, that this protest is not to untie submitted, that this protest is about looking at what stage is doing to other people looking at what is well, is doing to other people. they say the be not in ties,
4:54 am
that one is, for example, is not being on tai submitted. and this is something that we've been viewing over and over again a year on campus when you talk to students or students who are protesting here. when you talk to jewish students, they say this has nothing to do with anti semitism. it has this has everything to do with what is well, is doing right now with the attack that is run is carrying. now thing guys that right now with the attack that is rarely is getting ready as it has fast upfront minutes, so nothing. yeah. what is getting ready to carry out in rough ride now? so people here, as i said before, they're stressing, but the importance is for them to be carrying all this protests so that the world's eyes stands. yeah. and are right now with what is happening. and the guy's a streak on, on the suffering that is happening on the gaza strip. yes. today's, and it's been really interesting to see how since these protests around stop the university campuses have become, you know, in the arena for the discussion about how being against zine is a,
4:55 am
is not being anti symmetric, bought to the us government. and what is the us government saying about all of this because it's awesome conflicts, the 2010 of the. so what's happening right now it's, it's also this is a country that is polarized in a way. and this phone says, what is happening is this university is not fully putting universities on how to respond to what is happening. for example, what we're seeing is that the president of columbia university is being criticized by when she called in the law enforcement to remove the students and where a 100 students where the change. but also she was being criticized by republicans and being accused for not doing enough to from, to remove the students from dissing cabs and from inside columbia university. and this for that, right? so you should have something that is not only happening among the universities,
4:56 am
but also it involves for the patient that the family sensitive time here in the united states. elections are happening later on this year. everything is being used for or against a precedent by done so sadly, this is something that just adds up to the current tension that exists in the country. those who do something i criticize for doing that and those do not do it. something similar happens so. so at least, you know, the students are caught up in the middle of what is happening right now. they say that they will remain on the streets votes for right here, behind us. they've been paying attention to is what is happening right now inside have no tone hold. and we're going to have to see how many of those who are inside the university right now. how many of them are going to be arrested? and what is going to happen to them because we haven't already heard from the university that someone's face suspension, other will face expulsion and other will be arrested. so thank you so much for your pershing on this,
4:57 am
on going on this very impatient using story. we're going to let you catch your breath just for a moment because we have another correspondence standing by for us, and that is christian salumi. who can tell us more about what's happening at the point where she is. she's also outside columbia university in new york, and for some the, from the university itself. yes, we have in just to explain, i'm on the opposite side of the campus from theresa, a lot of bystanders. demonstrators have gathered here to watch and observe what's happening. heavy police presence here, police vehicles to keep the crowds up, pay why the police move onto the campus and begin arresting the demonstrators to answer your question. more specifically, we have heard from the university administration. they put out a statement just about an hour ago saying that they had requested the police to come onto the campus to deal with the situation. they blamed the protesters for
4:58 am
escalating the situation by to sewing into hamilton hall and taking over that building. and they also claim that non students outside agitators are working with the students in the building. and that is why they called in the police, the police department and the mayor of new york. eric adams held a press conference earlier today where they talked about this as well. they said that they believed that people involved were not students and could be dangerous to the people and on campus. and because they are not affiliated with the campus are breaking the law and they listed numerous charges that they were going to attempt to charge them with. if they were there,
4:59 am
they appealed to the parents of the students, actually asking them to call their students and talk to the students or on the campus warning that they could be criminally, charged no longer just with trust passing, but with breaking and entering and other charges like that, i think this is what they say. they wanted to get the students out of the way. but when you talk to people on the sidelines here, they ran into some teachers who were huddled around to radio, listening to a live broadcast from students inside the campus. and the teachers. the professors were horrified that the students that the, that the administration had called the police and they are not buying that. they say these are our students. so yeah, students are going after. so they were very concerned and came out specifically to bear witness to what's happening here along with a lot of young people that we see here. but also it's interesting,
5:00 am
a lot of people are really afraid to talk to us. you noticed a lot of young people in the demonstrators are wearing masks. we don't know how many are students that there's a lot of student housing around here. and even people who go to school at columbia aren't being allowed back on the campus right now because of the lock down situation. and the students who are on campus were advised to stay in their dormitories and not come out in the run up to this. clearly the university was prepping everyone for this mass take over by the police kristen, they're stay with us as we update of us who might just be joining us on what's been happening. this is really important developments at columbia university in new york . this is al jazeera and you are watching live pictures from columbia university. within the past 65 minutes, we have seen police offices moving into climbing up and entering through a window at the historic hamilton school in columbia university. that's where
5:01 am
a group of students we don't know how many exactly, but, and this is students barricaded themselves in 5, hamilton holes on monday evening to can.
