throughout everything, not ride the highs too high and the lows too lows. so i think for us it's to go about our business as we've done the whole way through, just keeping things simple, sticking to what we do best. obviously the way england, australia, south africa, they all play a very aggressive brand of cricket and we've got our own brand. and if we stick to it, we know that we're fighters. we keep coming back time and time again. and when it matters most, we really put the foot down. england's david willey has announed he'll retire from international cricket following the world cup. the bowler is the only player in the squad for the tournament not to be offered a central contract with the team's director of cricket rob key admitting willey *wasn*t best pleased' about it. england are the defending champions in india but have lost five of their six matches so far. former england captain michael vaughan thinks england's treatment of willey

has been "disgraceful" to think that england handed out 29 contracts, yet a player who's absolutely probably one of the only players that are performing in the world cup is david willey. arrived at breakfast a couple of weeks ago and didn't have a contract. i just find it staggering that they give out 29 contracts yet a player who was in the starting 11 for the last three games and has done well in the present world cup has not been given a contract. so i feel for david willey and i do think the ecb got this wrong in terms of the contract. england's next match is against australia on saturday, and aussie all rounder glenn maxwell will be missing because of concussion and bruising after falling off the back of a golf buggy on monday. australia say it's hoped he will be able to play later in the tournament. maxwell hit the fastest century in world cup history earlier in the tournament. in football, it's been a night to forget for manchester united — they've been knocked out of the english football

after contracting e coli from a fast food restaurant on her way home from a student night out. her body had a very unusual reaction to the food poisoning, which changed her life forever. when i awoke from the coma, sadly, i had totally lost my eyesight. what went through your head when you were told that you weren't going to see it again? it was terrifying. i didn't believe it for that that period of time. ijust thought, oh, they're not right. it will come back at some point. i really hit rock bottom. i thought to myself, "how am i going to live my life without sight"? and i thought, i've got two options here. i can sit around and feel really sorry for myself or i can try and make something out of my life and actually maybe even achieve something that i wouldn't have done even if i had sight. it was a talent id day in 2020 that brought lizzi to paris cycling. i'd barely ridden a bike before, let alone a tandem. and yeah, the journey started from there. six years on, from waking up blind in a hospital bed, lizzi is now an elite para cyclist training at the velodrome chasing

the paralympic dream. wow. what a rise. over the last three years, she's been fighting for a spot on the para cycling team. gold medal going to great britain and most recently claimed gold at the world championships. we've just won that medal. you've got like a home crowd of people cheering you on. it was just the most fantastic, like, atmosphere. that was like one of the first times i thought to myself, i don't need to see to be able to feel this. this feeling like the excitement. everybody*s cheering for you. and it kind of sunk in. i sort of thought to myself that i thought, "yes, like i think i've made it". and it was it was a lovely feeling. for her coach, it's clear lizzie*s mental strength is one of her greatest attributes. she brings such a positive attitude, you know, you would, you know, if you met her on the street today, you'd not know what she'd gone through. she's grasped this opportunity with both hands. i genuinely think this is the beginning of a very long career for her. with less than a year to go until the paralympics in paris. lizzi has become a one to watch and her focus

is very much on going to herfirst games. it is really exciting. as i say, it drives me through all of my training. i mean, i look back to 2020 when i came to the talent id day here, and i wasjust like shy, nervous little girl, like no idea about cycling. and i fast forward three years, and i've become a world champion. like its such a crazyjourney. and ijust think like, i don't know what's next, but i'm really excited. yeah. rachel latham, bbc news, manchester. well, for me and the rest of the team here at the bbc sports centre, it's goodbye for now. hello there. we've got more heavy rain, more strong winds as we head into thursday, all due, of course, to storm ciaran. that's been tracking its way right the way across the atlantic, heading over the southwest of england. now, it will move eastwards towards east anglia. it will bring more heavy rain. and given how wet it's been in october, that could lead to some flooding.
12:56 am
the winds also could potentially be dangerous and hazardous, bringing some disruption. this is where we've got the amber wind warnings from the met office. the winds already picking up in the southwest, those stronger winds will transfer through the english channel to affect coastal areas in the south east of england. the winds are likely to be even stronger for a while in the channel islands. gusts of over 90 mph already had gusts of 100 ph along the coast of brittany. so some really strong winds across the far south of the uk. could be quite windy in other areas and around the storm, around that low pressure, we've got these showers of longer spells of rain. as the wind picks up in scotland, it will get wetter here. we may miss the worst of the wet weather in northern ireland. temperature wise, well, of course, nothing to write home about, a cool 10—12 degrees. but at least during the afternoon, the winds in the southwest will start to ease and that's because the storm is going to be tracking away, and at the same time, it will be weakening. so as we get into friday, the area of low pressure,
12:57 am
what was the storm is going to be sitting out in the north sea. so it's not going to be as windy on friday. it's not going to be as wet. there'll be some sunshine, but also some showers blown in, and there'll still be some blustery winds. the windiest weather, perhaps the wettest weather will be across eastern scotland and the north east of england. and those temperatures may be a degree or so higher, but still only 12—13 degrees at best. now, as we head into the weekend, we see that area of low pressure continuing to fade away in the north sea. another one coming in from the atlantic, not expecting this one to be named because the winds aren't going to be as strong. the strong winds will still be through the english channel. but we've got more rain to come across southern parts of the uk, into wales, in the midlands, followed by some showers. further north, there'll be some sunshine and perhaps a few showers as well. and those temperatures not really changing a great deal. so after all this very wet and very windy weather, we've got some more rain on saturday for the southern half of the uk and then we're all in the same boat on sunday. sunshine and showers
12:58 am
and not as windy.
