so welcome to the programme. lots coming up and we are starting with snooker, and another record—breaking night for england's ronnie o'sullivan, as he won a record extending eighth uk championship title. nick parrott reports. 30 years separate ronnie o'sullivan's first major trophy from his latest. back then, he was a freshfaced 17—year—old. this was an early 48th birthday present for wednesday. i always keep beating myself up because of the age thing, i keep thinking at some point i've got to stop winning at some point, but i keep doing all right, so i'll keep going until the wheels fall off. they have almost fallen off a few times. his struggles with depression, alcohol and drugs are well documented. he arrived at york barbican

facing a disciplinary hearing, for appearing in forappearing in an for appearing in an exhibition event earlier this season and threatening to quit over the row. after reaching the quarterfinal, he said ijust can't be bothered anymore. but there was no lack of desire as he took on china's ding junhui in the final. the rocket raced into a 4—1 lead but ding remained calm, he had been here before, losing last year's final. three times, he hauled himself back into contention, but this, to make it 7—7, provoked the same reaction as poking a bear. it tookjust eight minutes for o'sullivan to roar back into the lead. applause. it finally broke ding's resilience and the inevitable soon followed. commentator: what a final, what a contest! _ ijust had to come out and have a good head. this i thought, if i'm going to lose, just make ding earn it. big crowd here, leave blood
1:47 am
sweat and tears on the table. iif i don't win, that isjust one of those things, but i came out here and gave it my all and ijust love competing. as most people get older, they start to lose their abilities, but o'sullivan keeps proving that age, to him, is just a number. nick parrott, bbc news. on to football now, and an entertaining day in the premier league, including a particularly high number of goals. six of them were at the etihad, where tottenham managed to grab a draw against manchester city. in a breathless game, it was 3—2 to city, until the 90th minute, when kuluskeki denied city victory. they now drop to third, three points behind leaders, arsenal. i think the team still has a strong belief but the first half was not good enough and the coach was very angry at half—time, and he said, guys, stop thinking, just play. then we came out better. so i think we have to grow a little bit mentally.
1:48 am
because the footballers there, the coach is there. we can be at the top in the future. really pleased for the players they got a reward. first half, we were lucky to be in the game. city could have blown us away in that period. but we hung in there. the second half was a lot better. we had a lot more belief and conviction. we made it a bit more uncomfortable for them. we dominated a little bit, made it uncomfortable for them. it would have been very easy to get blown away in the second half. i thought they showed great character and it is important when they do that that they get a reward for it. so that result means manchester city have now drawn their last three premier league games, after having been ahead. those were against chelsea, liverpool and now spurs, and city defender ruben dias was left deflated by his side's inability to hold on once again. a feeling of frustration, very similar to liverpool,
1:49 am
a game we, i would say, we dominated the most part a it, of it, and in the end the draw was what we could get. but overall, i can't say i'm not happy with the performance of the team. everyone was on it. the team was very aggressive, we were very sharp. will continue playing at a good level, so unfortunately against liverpool, it cannot be in the mind of the players to be negative, but in the moment, but it's a moment to have to see the team, how we react and how we make a step forward and the performance was at a high level against a top team. the second half, they made a step forward, they play more a little bit, but you can see just three or four chances when tottenham mainly is... of course they have important absences and of course even with that, they get the result. his team are third behind liverpool, also involved in a high—scoring thriller.
1:50 am
there's had seven goals. they fought back to beat fulham with two goals in the last few minutes. trent alexander—arnold's free kick went in off the goalkeeper to open the scoring, but fulham equalised quickly. then a spectacular goal from alexis mac allister put liverpool back in front. through bobby cordova—reid, and they were winning 3—2 until the 87th minute when liverpool's substitute scored his first premier league goal, and seconds later alexander—arnold won them the match. we played an incredible game until we didn't any more! so all credit to fulham. they did really well. counterattack, all the stuff they did was really good, but we had too much a hand in that to give that away. so today we scored four worldies, and were lucky again in the end to win the game. so that tells you pretty
1:51 am
much everything. so went for a spirited fulham but their manager marco silva was full of praise for how his team took liverpool on, and responded to the challenge of playing at anfield. really proud of them, definitely. the way we played, the way we matched them, liverpool, the way we showed spirit against great comic goals every time, because that normally don't happen so often in a football match. and great goals, the way they scored. from long distance and all that stuff. but the way we reacted every time from that situations, even we were able to make the score 3—2 during part of the second half. of course, proud. we didn't deserve the result. meanwhile, chelsea beat brighton 3—2 at home, despite playing half a game with just ten men. it had looked straight forward for chelsea. they were 2—0 up after 20 minutes, through levi colwell and enzo fernandez, and even when brighton pulled it back to 2—1, and chelsea lost a player, they still managed
1:52 am
to score again, anotherfrom fernandez. a late goal from joao pedro made it a nervy final few minutes but chelsea held on for the win that moved them to the top half of the table, to the relief of their manager mauricio pochettino, after the heavy defeat at newcastle last week. we started the game really well. i think we were playing well. we deserved the win. of course it was complicated in the second half because we were one less. 2—1 to us. of course, brighton is a very good team, play very well and of course they sometimes force you to play deep. the opponent was good. the second half, we score the third goal with one less and in the end conceded in the last few minutes, but crazy at the end because that was too much
1:53 am
things that happened on the end, emotion, and when the team is tired, we're all tired, many confusion. yes. but overall happy because we knew that after newcastle we needed to show a different face, and that is why i am happy from the team. the other two premier league games were draws. aston villa had a last—minute goal to draw 2—2 at bournemouth, and it was 1—1 at the london stadium between west ham and crystal palace. plenty of action across europe today as well, where psg extended their lead at the top of french ligue 1. germany's bundesliga leaders bayern leverkusen were held to a draw by borussia dortmund. in spain, barcelona beat atletico madrid to leapfrog them into third in la liga.
1:54 am
a new—look england cricket side could not quite come up with the morale boosting win they had hoped for in their opening one—day match against the west indies. instead, they lost in antigua. there were signs of improvement, though, and england started well with the bat, reaching 325 all out. harry brook top scoring on 71, and it looked like that might be enough but a sublime century from captain, shai hope, helped the windies chase it down, with three sixes in the penultimate over to win by four wickets. finally, it was third time lucky for scottie scheffler at the hero world golf challenge, after being run out for the last two years. at the hero world golf challenge, after being runner—up for the last two years. the american has finally won the title. the world number one lead going into the last round, and finished on a huge 20—under—par, three shots ahead of austria's sepp straka. tiger woods playing in his first tournament for eight months came 18th in a field of 12 golfers. there is scottie scheffler. tiger woods is heavily involved in this tournament, so great to have him back on the course. and he didn't come last.
1:55 am
that is pretty much it for me butjust time to recap on our top story. ronnie o'sullivan beating ding junhui to win a record extending eighth uk championship. he now holds records as both the oldest and the youngest uk champion, having won it first three decades ago, as a 17—year—old. that's the sport for now. much more on the website. but for me and the team here at sportsday, it is good night. hello, there. plenty of wintry scenes recorded by our weather watchers across the uk, throughout the weekend, such as here in derbyshire, with the lying snow, but further south, across much of england and south wales, then it turned milder on sunday, with outbreaks of rain moving northwards, and for all of us, the current cold spell will be coming to an end as we head through this week.
1:56 am
it will be turning milder, but the payback is it's also going to be wetter and windier for much of the time. now, we've seen this deep area of low pressure just roll its way northwards and eastwards, strong, gusty winds towards channel coasts through the night. still some heavy downpours of rain around, snow over any elevation. this is how we're starting off monday morning. cold and frosty still towards the north, but milder further south, five to seven degrees celsius here. but let's just zoom in on the north of england and north wales, where we could see some icy conditions, tricky travelling conditions, i think, particularly over the higher passes of the pennines and across north wales, with some of this rain turning to snow with any elevation. but most of this will be falling as rain, maybe wet snow to lower levels, though, at times with any intensity, and there's a brisk northerly wind blowing. we'll see some strong, gusty winds, particularly across western wales and to the southwest of england. it's going to feel cold in exposure to that wind, despite the fact that, in theory, temperatures will be higher than yesterday. largely dry for northern ireland and much of scotland, away from the east, with perhaps a few isolated showers around. so still feeling pretty raw
1:57 am
with the briskness of that wind on monday. the same still true on tuesday, but our deep area of low pressure is gradually pushing its way further eastwards. it's very slow—moving. there'll still be some patchy outbreaks of rain, i think, across much of northern england. again, with any elevation, this could be falling as snow. still some rain too, just feeding down from western wales towards the southwest of england. but elsewhere, i think it will tend to turn a bit drier, particularly away from east anglia, as we head through the afternoon. largely dry for scotland, but still temperatures struggling to get above freezing over any lying snow. but a drier, brighter day, particularly out towards the west. and it's going to be a very cold night on tuesday. again, a widespread frost with some patches of freezing fog developing. then we've got another low just working its way in from the south west, and this is going to drag with it some much milder—feeling air. so just look at those temperatures go up. by the time we get to thursday, we're back up into double figures across the board. but it will be wet and windy
1:58 am
at times, with perhaps some transient snow in the north. bye— bye.
