hello and thanks for joining us on the show. we start with football, and it was a case of so near and yet so far for england. it was a match with so much at stake and in the end so much drama and heartbreak. england and by the same virtue team gb will not be at the olympic games. the english were nominated to represent british hopes for paris 2024 qualification and needed to beat scotland by three more goals than the netherlands in their match against belgium to maintain their chances of grabbing a ticket for next years extravaganza in the french capital. on the field, sarina wiegman�*s side doing everything right with a 6—0 victory over scotland. they were actually heading to the nations league final as the match between the dutch and the belgians ticked into injury time in tillberg, but amazingly the netherlands scored two goals in the 91st

and 95th minute of the match to go through on goal difference. it means the european champions and world cup runners up will not feature in paris next year. so while there's dutch delight, our sports correspondent katie gornall was watching england destroy scotland at hampden park, she rounds up the match for us. well, no—one can question the effort and the heart from england here, they gave everything against scotland to try and keep alive team gb�*s codes qualifying for the olympics but, ultimately, they came up short and again with so many twists and turns. they came into this match knowing they had to beat scotland and better the netherlands�* results by three clear goals. and they wasted no time here at hampden park. alex greenwood got them up and running after just 12 minutes. there two goals in two minutes from laurenjames and then beth mead, on her return to the starting lineup after more than a year out with injury, she scored

england's fourth just before halftime. at that point england were heading through on goals scored, but they knew that one goal either here or in tilburg could change everything, so even at 5—0 up things were still tense for england. then, heading into stoppage, time that's when things got really, really dramatic stop the netherlands scored to go 3—0 up against belgium. lucy bronze scored england's sixth almost at the same time. it looked at full—time as if england had done enough but they faced an anxious wait for the full—time score that the netherlands had scored a dramatic fourth goal to top the group and send them through to the knockout stages at the expense of england. england's players looked absolutely dejected on the pitch at full—time. they've been undone notjust by that result in tilburg

but also by their form earlier in the tournament and it's going to take some time for them to process their heartbreak here at hampden park. for the whole week, how we came back friday, seconds the netherlands scored a goal.

we conceded the goals we didn't want to concede on set plays, that is one of the main threats, but they have done it. it is because they have worked on and are so good and it made us really fight for the game. i think we grow and grow in the game. we started to get control, dominance, chances, and at the end it finishes in a beautiful way. immensely proud of the lads but, yeah, you're right, disappointed and really flat at the moment. i don;t think that's ever happened to me. not sure, i can't remember it — that later goal to lose the game. um, so, yeah, flat right now. for a newly promoted team and to be fighting where we are and we know we're giving a lot away, to show that character and the quality as well, not only get back in the game and get ahead, it shows a lot, but ultimately we scored three goals and got nothing from it, so we know we're not perfect, we know we have got to keep improving. meanwhile, burnley have come crashing back to earth after their 5—0 victory over sheffield united at the weekend. they remain in the bottom three, losing 1—0 at wolves on tuesday. it means gary o'neill�*s side are now up to 12th

in the table, with their first win in three games and all thanks to south korea's hwang hee chan with the only goal of the game before half time. it was pretty much how i expected it to go before. i hoped we could create more and be more fluid, but i have watched a lot of burnley and not many teams they play against manage progress through the pitch with the ball. they're very well organised. i said to the lads after, it's a big win, it's a big win. the group stuck together, kept a big clean sheet, never looked in doubt, really, once we were 1—0 up, never felt under threat. big win. manchester united manager erik ten hag says his squad are together, dismissing suggestions that there is a split dressing room at old trafford. united are seventh in the premier league and bottom of their champions league group. adding to the mix, the club took the unusual step of excluding four media organisations from their scheduled news conference on tuesday after reacting furiously to reports up to half of the squad were either unhappy with ten hag,

or his training and tactics. they should come to us first and not call around behind our back, printing articles, that's not the right thing. i think we have another relationship and, again, we have a normal and professional discussion and debate about it. there are always in every team, players who are less playing, less happy, but not different, as normal. we've had the first premier league sacking of the season with strugglers sheffield united dismissing paul heckingbottom and immediately replacing him with theirformer manager chris wilder. united are bottom of the table and four points from safety after losing 11 of their opening 1a games. wilder returns to the role he left after almost five years

in march 2021. in that time, he oversaw sheffield united's rise from league one back to the premier league, clinching two promotions in the space of three seasons following his appointment in may 2016. worth pointing out that by this stage last season six managers had been sacked, leading to a premier league—record 13 departures. it's not a great situation, everybody knows that. it is the best league in the world, everybody knows that, and we are playing liverpool first game up, so thanks very much for the fixture list. but, listen, 30,000—odd in bramall lane on a wednesday under the lights against arguably one of the best teams in europe is a tough start but when we can go and attack and have a right go in that will be the attitude from me and the players. we are up against it. everybody in the world, you guys, every pundit that wants to make an opinion, every supporter thinks we are done and dusted, so we've always had that under dog tag, that mentality, and we've had it right the way through.

the international olympic committee has been urged to make a decision over whether or not russian and belarusian athletes will be able to compete at next year's paris games as neutrals. ioc president thomas bach says a final decision will be made they want clarity over qualification procedures "as soon as possible". china, miami, austria, austin, sao paulo, and qatar are the six grands prix chosen to host sprint events during the 2024 formula 1 season. f1 announced the list of races on tuesday and said changes to the format of the events were under discussion. a plan to move qualifying for the sprint to friday and hold the shorter race on saturday before grand prix qualifying has been effectively agreed. more radical changes, such as reversing the sprint grid, are also being considered. and that is sadly all the time

we have left for now. from me, mark edwards, and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre we will see you soon. bye— bye. hello again. temperatures have dropped away quite sharply through the night. and as we start on wednesday morning, there will be a hard and a widespread frost, particularly across northern areas of scotland. on top of that, some fog patches around as well. but there will be some sunny spells, certainly a quieter spell of weather for many of us throughout wednesday compared to the last few days. that area of low pressure bringing the rain, clearing away to the east. we've got further weather systems waiting out in the atlantic that will become more of a feature of the weather over the next few days. but a cold start to the day for many of us. temperatures potentially down to —10 degrees in northern areas of scotland, and some freezing fog in the east of wales through parts of the midlands and southern

areas of england. that could be quite stubborn to clear away, but elsewhere from the west, and with that some outbreaks of rain. but if you're stuck beneath the area of fog, temperatures may only be around about one degree celsius. temperatures 4—6 celsius. but in the west, you notice nine, 11 degrees there in plymouth, signs of the less cold air moving in. and as we go through wednesday night, that rain will continue to spread north and eastward. as it bumps into colder air, temporarily, there could be some snow over the higher ground of northern england and across scotland, but that will become increasingly confined to higher ground as we go through thursday because that less cold air, the milder conditions, will spread in from the southwest, moving to pretty much most areas throughout thursday. but it means actually where we'll have a bit of snow for the time of a higher ground of scotland, heavy rain is going to spread through and that's going to bring where we've seen a bit of flooding over the last couple of days or so, eventually clearing from southern and western areas.

across eastern areas, 6—7 degrees. now, while that heavy rain does clear away to the northeast, strengthening winds around the irish sea coasts and further outbreaks of rain. of the weather over the coming days. there'll be some strong winds at times as well. temperatures in double figures. bye— bye.
