it's a world that people don't want to leave alone. and doing this project was... i've been on the show for so many years, but i felt like i could keep going. like, i felt like there are so many stories to tell in this universe that's like my favourite genre, that's like grounded sci—fi. so, i don't know. i mean, i do know, but i can't tell you! it looks like we'll have to wait and see. nickjohnson, bbc news. let's see if any stranger things are happening with the weather. here's darren bett. things will be a bit upside down over the next few days. it will be milder and drier. sometime today, not everywhere. in northern ireland the best of the sunshine but have eastern parts of england around the area of low pressure, a chilly breeze blowing. a lot of cloud and further light rain and drizzle and

another weather system coming in from the atlantic. ahead of that we still have some time, notjust northern ireland but in scotland and increasingly the cloud is breaking up increasingly the cloud is breaking up across wales and some western parts of england. not particularly warm by any means. a chilly breeze continuing to bring in those showers across eastern areas of england. where we have a clearer skies following the sunshine, early in the night there is a risk of a prose, temperatures could get close to freezing for a while. but the window of clearer skies will be closing because while that area of damp weather moves await this cloud and rain moves in from the atlantic and briefly there will be some snow over the tops of the scottish mountains and may be in the northern pennines. it should turn back to rain later in the night because milder air is coming in and these other temperatures by the end of the night, above freezing by morning. i which time the rain should have cleared away from scotland and northern ireland. some sunshine, a few showers, mainly in the north of scotland where it still will be quite blustery. the cloudy damp weather continues a crossing event

wales. it could linger across east anglia and the south—east well into the opening post of other parts of ingleton into wales should get more sunshine than today. temperatures are likely to be a couple of degrees higher than today. maybe double figures towards the south—west. there is milder weather to come. one weather front is there is milder weather to come. one weatherfront is going there is milder weather to come. one weather front is going to be moving out of the way. another one arrives. this time from the atlantic around that top of the area of high pressure stop it will be focused towards the north—west of the uk. more cloud in northern ireland and increasingly in scotland on friday. a bit of rain and drizzle to the north—west but otherwise it will be dry and a lot of sunshine on friday for england and wales. so about eight celsius for eastern parts of england but out of the west it is getting much milder. 13 in belfast. that milder air is coming into wetter areas on friday and then pushes across the whole of the country as we head into the weekend. the winds from the west or south—west, colder air to the north of the uk, to the north of that weather front and warmer air ahead

of it. that weather front may slide down across the uk on sunday. some uncertainty about that but it looks like for the weekend at least on saturday it will be milder. temperatures may drop in northern areas later on sunday. a bit of rain on sunday that is mainly across. thanks, darren. and that's bbc news at one. now its time to join our colleagues for the news where you are. hello and welcome to sportsday this wednesday afternoon. i'm chetan pathak, coming up on the programme: knocked out of europe — what next for manchester united and their manager erik ten hag after their worst—ever champions league campaign? great britain's most successful female olympian, dame laura kenny, tells
1:34 pm
us about her return to cycling and paris hopes after becoming a mum of two. and beaten in barbados — england's cricketers collapse in their t20 against the west indies as their series begins with defeat. welcome along, thank you forjoining us. so what now for manchester united after their exit from the champions league last night? with growing questions about the manager's future, the squad, the owners, injuries mounting, dissapointing perfomances and difficult games to come. the one thing that is certain is there is no more european football to worry about this season. their 1—0 defeat to bayern munich at old trafford ensured they finished bottom of their group, which means no europa league to fall back on. it's their worst champions league campaign in their history but for now, manager erik ten hag is trying to stay positive.
1:35 pm
we can focus of course on the premier league and this is, i think, the level we want to play — champions league. so we have to give every effort in to be in the top four. so we, next year, we are back in the champions league and then of course we have the fa cup. so there are still many things to play for. when we ask what's next for united, the immediate answer is this. these are their next six games, which will be a test of their depleted squad. anfield and liverpool on sunday is followed by a trip to west ham, a boxing day game against high flying aston villa, then they're away to forest and wigan in the fa cup before playing spurs. with more reaction to united's champions league exit, i've been getting the thoughts
1:36 pm
of our football reporter simon stone: many people would argue they lost in a rather meek manner with no build—up during the game and no number of chances being squandered, almost as if manchester united were going through the motions and erik ten hag would view their matches on match day four and five against cope and hagan and galatasaray —— coping hagan —— copenhagen where they were in winning positions and couldn't win the games. it is a major blow for manchester united. for the first time in 20 years they have been in europe and have no european competition after christmas. the? competition after christmas. they seem to have _ competition after christmas. they seem to have turned _ competition after christmas. they seem to have turned a _ competition after christmas. they seem to have turned a corner and at the next season it all goes wrong again. liverpool coming up at anfield on sunday, should erik ten hag be worried about his job?
1:37 pm
hag be worried about his “ob? unless there is a repeat h hag be worried about his “ob? unless there is a repeat of _ hag be worried about his job? unless there is a repeat of something - hag be worried about his job? unless there is a repeat of something like i there is a repeat of something like last year when manchester united were beating seven nil i don't see hisjob being under threat but i say that because we're waiting for clarification over the jim that because we're waiting for clarification over thejim ratcliffe ineos purchase of 25% of the top and you can imagine if people like that, and they will want to take a look at the football side of the operation almost as a matter of the priority so why would you think about getting rid of the manager before you get that? i think that this is why there is no immediate threat without some catastrophe in terms of what happens at anfield. that i think for the general well—being of the football club and belief in erik ten hag himself we need some positive results and nobody will give them much of a chance at liverpool but it will give them a chance of making a statement if they have the players

capable of pulling off a shock win. is there any indication of when united fans and everyone else will get information in terms of the ownership? i get information in terms of the ownership?— get information in terms of the ownershi? ., i, get information in terms of the ownershi? ., , , ., ownership? i was told yesterday to come next week _ ownership? i was told yesterday to come next week and _ ownership? i was told yesterday to come next week and it _ ownership? i was told yesterday to come next week and it could - ownership? i was told yesterday to come next week and it could be . come next week and it could be before christmas but i have been told on numerous occasions it will be by a certain deadline and then these deadlines come and go and there is no resolution, so when it happens it will happen. it could be next week and it may be after christmas. newcastle united manager eddie howe believes wednesday's champions league match with ac milan has got all the hallmarks of being a special game. 20 years since their last champions league campaign, newcastle have to beat the italian side at stjames' park to reach the knockout stages and hope paris st—germain don't win against the already qualified borussia dortmund.
1:39 pm
i think being under lights it is very special but champions league, we have something to play for and thatis we have something to play for and that is before the party game we would have taken this position. it could have been very different but we are where we are and in the position we are in and i think we are looking forward to trying to improve on our last two performances so the lads are very focused. manchester united women's manager marc skinner says he's hopeful that mary earps will sign a new contract with the club. the england goalkeeper has a contract untiljune 202a. she's attracted interest from arsenal although bbc sport understands there've been no conversations with earps and the club. i want mary to stay at this club and i want mary to stay at this club and i think the progression is exactly what it was but i think they are progressing and having conversations around it so it is with the club to
1:40 pm
negotiate that and i can't be more clear i want mary to stay at this club, she is a huge part of what i wanted to build here. another day, another defeat for england's cricketers having lost their one day series, they lost their opening game of their t20 series to the west indies. captainjos buttler and phil salt took the tourists to 77—0 but a total collapse saw them bowled out for 171 — alzarri joseph taking three wickets, including two in the final over. in reply, the hosts reached their total with 11 balls to spare to win the match by four wickets. the teams now head to grenada for the second t20 on thursday. australian cricketer usman khawaja says he'll fight the decision to stop him from wearing shoes with a pro—palestinian message. the batter had planned to wear shoes with the words "all lives are equal" and "freedom is a human right" at a test match with pakistan. khwaja says he's been told by the international cricket council
1:41 pm
that he won't be allowed to do that because it's considered to be a political statement. they icc have told me i can't wear my shoes on the field because they believe it is a political statement under the guidelines. i believe it is a humanitarian view. i will respect their decision but i will fight to seek approval. freedom is a human right. it's been confirmed that eddiejones has been appointed japan's rugby union head coach for the second time. the former england coach had previously led japan between 2012 and 2015, which included a famous win over south africa at the 2015 world cup. he resigned as australia coach in october after they failed to reach the knockout stages of this year's world cup. great britain's most successful female olympian dame laura kenny believes women athletes can struggle to get pregnant because of their lifestyle. the mum—of—two is targeting a fourth games in paris next year and speaking with husband, jason, to five live breakfast, kenny says she's had many conversations with athletes suffering with a condition
1:42 pm
called red—s. there is no reason why it happened to us but i do think there are females who have struggled and will struggle to get pregnant because of the lifestyle of being an athlete and with red—s with females losing their periods, you will not get pregnant if you do not have a period. i have always consistently had a period so that has always been fine for me but the amount of conversations i have had of people having red—s, it is really dangerous because you don't have a period and these females are giving up on things and there are so many athletes that are here saying they want to start a family. if you don't have a period you can't start a

family. you can hear the full interview as a podcast. it's called the laura and jason kenny one, just search for the all about feed on bbc sounds. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.co.uk/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. let's get more on our main story — the climate deal that calls on all countries to move away from using fossil fuels which was passed at cop28. it has been hailed by as an historic breakthrough but some countries are unhappy that the wording was not stronger. our correspondent carl nasman in dubai has been speaking to fernanda carvalho, the global climate and energy policy lead at the wwf — and he asked her if the agreement was what she was hoping for. i should say it's below our expectations. but there are some interesting
1:44 pm
points and others not so great. i think that we must acknowledge that the language on transitioning away from fossil fuels is a first in this process. after almost 30 years of discussing this, it's the first time we have this signal in the text. it's a strong signal, but not as strong as we were hoping for. we were really hoping for a phase—out of fossil fuels. but we also acknowledge it's very, very hard to get consensus when you need 198 countries to agree. what else would you have liked to have seen in that document? is there anything else missing that you were pushing for? i think the adaptation piece as a whole, not only in the text but also in the global goal of adaptation, is one that we would like to see much stronger. it's because the developing countries and the most vulnerable, vulnerable peoples of the world...
1:45 pm
and this is really talking about helping the countries that are already feeling the effects of climate change. exactly. we can feel the effects everywhere in a different way. i think that is very clear on how that is in every corner of the world. and you know, what we need here is some kind of north star, like the 1.5. so it's a set of indicators that we couldn't agree at this cop. and of course, we need to significantly scale up finance on this issue to help those countries and those peoples that are the most affected. at the wwf so much of what you focus on has to do with nature. what would a north star for nature look like? well, of course we want a nature positive world by 2030. we need to be halting and reversing the destruction of nature. so i think that that we saw, again, some positive signals.
1:46 pm
there were many pledges connected to nature on mangroves. there was a mangrove breakthrough.
