hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm jane dougall. arsenal march to the top of the premier league, with arteta leading them to victory over brighton. a point for both managers at anfield after a goalless draw between rivals liverpool and manchester united. and harry kane scores a brace for bayern, taking his tally to 20. hello and welcome to the programme. we start with an entertaining day in the english premier league, where arsenal have returned to the top of the table, after a convincing 2—0 win over

brighton. they opened the scoring in the second half, with a gabrieljesus header, and then, kai havertz got the second — that's his fourth goal in seven games. the win ensures arsenal bounce back from last weekend's loss to aston villa. brighton slip a place to ninth. an incredible performance. i think it was a joy to watch, from the start to the end, the way we did it against this very, very good team. i think the players deserve a lot of credit, because we generated so much, and even at half—time, the scoreline didn't reflect that. we were really patient, we kept going and i think we deserved to win the game. at anfield, bitter rivals liverpool and manchester united played out a goalless draw. in a cagey game, liverpool were unable to make the most of their chances against a stubborn united defence, who went down to ten men in injury time when diogo dalot was sent off.

liverpool drop to second in the league, a point behind arsenal, and afterwards, jurgen klopp criticised his players* lack of ruthlessness. the main thing i don't like is obviously the result. we should have won this game but we didn't. that is a fact. i'm not sure if you can create more finishes in a game against manchester united but if you have that number, a few more should be on target, a few more clear—cut chances should be there. we had enough to score, and i think massive chances. but should have been more. i think the game plan went very good, the players were brilliant, how they worked together, sticked together, how they were in in the fight. maybe the only criticism would be in possession, we could have hurt them more. if we kept one, two, three passes in, but that is the only thing. if we scored the two big opportunities, we could even

win this game. ollie watkins scored a late winner as aston villa came from 2—1 down to win a bad—tempered game at brentford. there were two red cards, ten yellow cards and both managers were booked. in celebrating his winning goal, watkins — who used to play for brentford — focused in on a home fan who had been abusing him. afterwards, watkins said it was never intended to disrespect the rest of the supporters. he had been onto me all game, saying personal stuff. so, i thought, if it happens once, it's fine. but two, three, four times, kept going onto me, i thought, "i'm going to get him back" so, it was aimed at him, not anyone else at the stadium. you know, i have a lot of respect for the club, the people here, the owner, everyone, the manager, and that's what i said to him after, when i was walking off. mohammed kudus scored twice to help west ham to a 3—0 victory over wolves at the london stadium. the ghanaian striker putting the hammers firmly in control

at the break. jarrod bowen made the points safe in the 74th minute with his tenth premier league goal of the season. the players are doing a brilliantjob, you know? we've got a cup quarterfinal to look forward to, we've got europe to look, coming march, at the moment, we are in a good position in the premier league, so we want to keep it going. and i still think we've got more to come, i really do, i think we can play better. manchester united lost ground in the wsl title race as rivals liverpool came away with an impressive 2—1 victory. manchester united took the lead within three minutes as ella toone pounced on leah galton*s pass to score. then, an own goal by united defender millie turner got liverpool back on level terms with taylor hinds scoring the winner. it's the first time matt beard's side have beaten united in the wsl and fifth—placed liverpool move level on points with them. it feels amazing.
3:50 am
i think this type of game is like another derby for us. so, we went in this all guns blazing and, like as you can see, how happy we are, how happy how our fans are and that means everything to us. it's a new season, new team, new players and you can see that we've added so much value to this team as well. so, yeah, that game's way behind us and i think that's why today feels even better. and in the rest of the day's games, champions chelsea stay top, after a 3—0 win at bristol city. laurenjames, erin cuthbert and sam kerr with the goals. manchester city are up to second after beating everton, 4—1. khadija shaw with a hat—trick. leicester and west ham drew. and aston villa beat brighton, i—o. to the german bundesliga now, where victor boniface scored one and provided two assists, as bayer leverkusen beat frankfurt, 3—0. his goal came afterjust 14 minutes as he squeezed a low shot under kevin trapp to open the scoring. boniface, who is almost certain to be selected

for nigeria's africa cup of nations squad injanuary, then helped get the win, finding florian wirtz in space for leverkusen*s third. first half was tight — we were lucky to score that goalfrom boni — but second half and overall, it was very serious, very professional performance, and that's the way we want to keep going to win more games. meanwhile, harry kane scored twice in bayern munich's 3—0 win over stuttgart to take his league tally to 20 goals in 14 games. kane scored his firstjust 90 seconds into the match, and headed home this second goal after the break. in la liga, real madrid were 4—1 winners over villarreal. jude bellingham getting on the scoresheet once again for the home side,

as they moved to the top of the table. carlo ancelotti's side are a point ahead of girona, who host alaves on monday. in italy, third placed ac milan beat monza, 3—0, in the early game in serie a. fiorentina won 1—0 against verona. and it finished 2—2 between udinese and sassuolo. bologna are up to fourth after their 2—0 victory over roma. lazio were in action against inter milan — it finished 2—0 to inter. after a two—year break from diving, tom daley is back. the 29—year—old four—time olympic medallist stepped away from the sport after winning gold at the tokyo games, but on thursday night at the british national diving cup, daley combined with noah williams to take gold in the ten—metre synchro. he says he's also considering competing at paris 2024 next summer. i mean, it definitely was not on my 2023 bingo card to come back to diving, if i'm completely honest. we had moved to america and we were planning onjust
3:53 am
being there and living out the rest of our lives there with our kids. but where phoenix was born, in colorado springs, is where the olympic training center and the olympic and paralympic museum is and i went there and saw all these motivational and inspirational videos and i was just not ready to hang up the trunks just yet. and i was — i remember turning to robbie, i was crying, and i see robbie and he was like, "papa, i want to see "you dive at the olympics." and then that was that — you don't say no to your kids when they say something like that. ifeel a lot more — a less pressure on my shoulders to win an olympic gold medal, because that was what i had been striving for my whole diving career, and i got that in tokyo, so now, for me to be able to go into this year, we still have qualifying in qatar, so we've got to come top seven there to be able to qualify for a spot in team gb, then it's full steam ahead into paris.
3:54 am
we are obviously seeing you in synchro. might we see you in individual heading towards paris? what are the thoughts at the moment? i'm too old to go into individual as well! synchro is like the perfect balance for me because it's 66% of the optional dives that i was doing, so the reduce in training load is what works — i'll be 30 when i go into the olympics next year, if that all goes to plan, so we will see. i'd be lying to you if i said i didn't want to win another medal at the olympics, because that's what you go in there wanting to do, and it would be all the sweeter to be able to dive in front of my kids, my husband, my mum, my friends — everyone. and paris is as close as it gets to a home olympic games, in terms of distance. so, but, yeah i'm really excited. i don't know what this journey holds. i've achieved everything i want to in the sport so far. so now, this is for me to enjoy it because every other 0lympic cycle, you want something so badly, to get that 0lympic gold medal, you're going to torture yourself through the whole thing. and now, it's like, i'm here and i'm enjoying it and we'll see how it goes.

finally, it seems tiger woods* son is a chip off the old block. see what we did there? 14—year—old charlie woods hit the shot of the day in the final round of the pnc championship. he rolled in this chip from just off the green at the ninth hole on the way to an ii—under par second round 61, which saw team woods finish the weekend on i9—under. however, it was only enough for a share of fifth place, with bernhard langer winning the event for the fifth time with his son, jason. lovely to see that interaction between father and son, wasn't it? that's it from us. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app or from our website. bye— bye. hello, there.
3:56 am
the mostly cloudy and mild conditions that we've had over the weekend will continue into the start of this upcoming week, and there will be some rain about, too — some of it quite heavy across the south on tuesday. by the middle part of the week onwards, it turns very windy, with widespread gales developing, and then by the end of the week, it'll be turning colder for most of us, particularly across the north of the uk, with an increasing chance of wintry showers. now, we have a load of weather fronts poised to push in for monday — one across the north—west of the country, with cooler air behind it, another one which is associated with this milder air, and it will be bringing some patchy rain, initially to wales, and then into the midlands, northern england at times through the day. there will be some rain, as well, for southern scotland, but brighter for the rest of scotland and northern ireland, compared to what we've had over the weekend, before this weather front starts to push into the west with some scattered showers. again, 11—13 degrees, so quite mild for the time of year, and there will be some glimmers of brightness to the east of high ground. as we head through monday
3:57 am
night, though, rain peps up across england and wales, becomes quite heavy and persistent for a time. scotland, northern ireland clear spells, a few showers. here, it'll be chillier, but less cold, further south. it does mean tuesday will start quite wet for england and wales but the rain should clear away eastwards fairly quickly through the day. so, a wet start to much of england and wales, tuesday. that rain becomes confined to the south—east, eventually clears away, i think, late in the afternoon. and then, it's brighter for all, the sunny skies across the north—west pushing down towards the south—east but there will be some blustery showers across scotland and northern ireland. they will be turning increasingly wintry as the air does turn cooler for many. as we push into wednesday, we pick up brisk west—northwesterly winds, and this weather front will bring some wet weather to scotland, northern england at times. i think northern ireland, central southern england and wales will see cloud coming and going. a little bit of brightness, particularly towards the east, but it will be quite a blustery day. temperatures perhaps up a degree or so for england, wales, northern ireland. still on the cool side across northern scotland.
3:58 am
but then it changes again, as we head into thursday and friday. it turns very windy, widespread gales developing. 0ur air switches to a more northwesterly, and colder air will push its way southwards on thursday and certainly, on friday and into the following weekend. so, things will be turning cooler or colder towards the end of the week with an increasing chance of wintry showers across northern areas, even into the christmas period.
