12:45 am
hello, welcome to sportsday. i'm katherine downes. coming upfor coming up for you on the programme... holders manchester city will play copenhagen in the last 16 of the champions league. brazilian side fluminense have made the final of the fifa club world cup. and anthonyjoshua tells us how he's preparing for his next fight. i'm focused on my opponent, i'm focused on the bigger picture and i'm using it as a source of motivation every day i'm in the gym. hello there. good evening. earlier today, we had the draw for the champions league last 16.
12:46 am
at this stage, teams from the same country or who came through the same group are kept apart. the holders manchester city look to have been given an easy path to the quarters. they will face the lowest ranked team left in the competition — the danish side fc copenhagen. these are the other ties as they were drawn at uefa headquarters in nyon. premier league leaders arsenal face porto, while italian champions napoli face barcelona. german giants bayern munich also face italian opposition in lazio. the current serie a leaders inter milan play atletico madrid while there is a daunting task ahead for rb leipzig against the iii—time champions real madrid. those ties will be played over two legs in february and march. here is the reaction of manchester city director of football txiki begiristain to facing copenhagen. of course, we remember the two games we played against them and it went well — not in copenhagen, but at least at the etihad. but it's not worth to talk too much about what happened two years ago. what we are going to talk
12:47 am
is what has happened just now, and they've been better than manchester united and galatasaray, two football clubs with much more experience in the champions league than them, so we have to be careful. we've also had the draw for the europa league play—off round. all of the premier league clubs have managed to bypass this round and go straight into the last 16. this extra stage pits the teams who finished second in their europa league groups against the teams who came third in the champions league group phase. here are the fixtures. jose mourinho*s roma will play feyenoord. ac milan, who missed out on the champions league knockouts, they'll face the french side rennes. benfica will play toulouse, who came through as runners—up in liverpool's group, and the ukrainian champions shakhtar donetsk play marseille, who missed out on top spot in the europa league with defeat to brighton on thursday. next to the fifa club world cup, where brazilian side fluminense have made the final after a 2—0 win over african champions al ahly. the deadlock wasn't broken
12:48 am
until the 71st minute, jhon arias putting the south american champions ahead from the penalty spot before john kennedy sealed fluminense*s place in the final, where they'll face european champions manchester city or asian champions urawa red diamonds — they play in the other semifinal on tuesday. manchester city, meanwhile, have been fined for failing to control their players after they lost their temper in their 3—3 draw with tottenham earlier this month. some of the players surrounded referee simon hooper after he blew for an earlier foul while jack grealish was through on goal. the club admitted they failed to ensure their players did not behave in an improper way during the 94th minute and have been fined £120,000. luton town fans have thanked the amazing show of support from the footballing world for their captain tom lockyer, who collapsed on the pitch against bournemouth at the weekend after suffering a cardiac arrest.
12:49 am
the game was subsequently abandoned. the club said this weekend that the defender is still undergoing tests and scans before his next steps of recovery. lockyer, who also collapsed during a game in may and underwent heart surgery, received about seven minutes of treatment from medical staff on the field at bournemouth*s vitality stadium. james burridge reports. well, the football world really has united behind tom lockyer, behind luton town and the traumatic events of saturday and his cardiac arrest. he still awaits the results of his test in hospital, but so many fans have been really describing their emotions today. mike fanning was one of them inside the stadium in bournemouth. mike, my goodness, me, what was it like inside the stadium on saturday? it was a very distressing experience, actually, for us all. there was over a thousand luton town fans inside the stadium, i would say about 9,000 or 10,000 bournemouth fans — small stadium, very similarto ours here at kenilworth road, really — and it was just the most awful, traumatic experience to go through. you never want to see that
12:50 am
on a football pitch. and once we knew that tom had fallen to the floor, we obviously realised there's history there, and the bournemouth fans soon realised as well, and it wasjust eerie silence. it just descended very quickly, within a few seconds, around the ground. it went from a noisy atmosphere to virtually silence, and as the club doctor ran on immediately, rob edwards obviously ran on, ushered everybody away, players—wise, because you can see the anguish on their face, we knew it was a very, very serious situation straightaway, and as soon as two or three minutes went by, we were just grief—stricken for tom, really, because we just knew that it's very, very serious. and the silence became cheers of tommy, tommy, the luton song, and the bournemouth fans soon realised as well, they started singing the song. it was just this outpouring of humanity, really, everyone standing and praying that tom gets through it.
12:51 am
and it's continued, hasn't it, over the last 36, 48 hours on social media? have you been surprised by the love, by the support? i don't take i have, really. i mean, when things like this happen, it's very rare in sport, isn't it, but it does happen, fans come together as one. we're all a tribe with our clubs, but we all bleed red at the end of the day, don't we, and we are all of one? the outpouring of humanity has been incredible. we went out saturday night, just to raise a respectful glass to tom, and there wasjust general members of the public same to us, "all the best, "tom," "good luck with the rest of the season, luton town." just, they realised that we'd all been through as well, and it was a very traumatic experience for everybody. and no—one wants to see that on a football pitch, but football didn't matter. it's all about tom's recovery and his family and friends, and that's what it's all about right now. mike, thank you, thank you very much indeed. and our thoughts with tom, with the club, as he makes his recovery over the next few weeks. an investigation into the events leading up to the death of sheffield united's maddy cusack has found no evidence of wrongdoing at the club. cusack, who became the first player to reach 100 appearances for the blades, died
12:52 am
in september at the age of 27. her death was not treated as suspicious by police. the investigation was carried out by an independent third party at the request of, and with co—operation from, cusack*s family. on monday, the club said that it had now closed with no evidence of wrongdoing. the league cup quarterfinals take place this week. liverpool face west ham on wednesday. before that, last season's runners—up in the competition, newcastle united, are at chelsea on tuesday night. eddie howe*s side had a morale—boosting win over the weekend, 3—0 against fulham, after three defeats in a row. they did pick up a couple more injuries tojoelinton and fabien schar, and though they are both doubts for tuesday's match, sven botman should be available after coming off the bench over the weekend, his first appearance in three months. sven has done a lot of work. he has rehabbed really well. so we'll have to make a decision on whether we want to start him in this game, but i certainly think from a physical perspective, he's got a load behind him.
12:53 am
been really impressed with how he's attacked that. and i thought he looked really good when he came on, so that was a great thing from the day, really. mauricio pochettino's chelsea, meanwhile, lie tenth in the premier league table and this competition could be their best chance of silverware. i want to win a trophy here, in england. i want to lift the trophy — now we have the possibility in this competition. i think it's important. yes, my wish and my desire is to win, and that is one of the competitions it is possible. but of course we need to respect our opponent, newcastle is going to be tough. we need to deserve to go through to the semifinal. heavyweight boxing returns this weekend, with anthonyjoshua and deontay wilder the headline acts in saudi arabia. joshua's on the comeback, after losing his belts to 0leksandr usyk and the subsequent rematch last year, and wants to continue his winning streak against sweden's 0tto wallin. wilder takes on joseph parker.
12:54 am
if both win, they could finally get in the ring together next year. butjoshua's focused on the prize of winning back a title. it's hard to switch off from all these opportunities, so i transform that pressure and what could be a distraction into motivation. of course i want to become champion. it's like asking a fighter, "do you want to become champion?" "no, i'm not focusing on that right now." yes, we all focus on what's next. i'm focused on my opponent, i'm focused on the bigger picture and i'm using it as a source of motivation every day i'm in the gym. i would love to fight for the ibf, i would love to fight deontay wilder, and more, you know? so, yeah, i'm using it as a source of motivation. nobody wants to get knocked out. i hit different. you understand me? i hit different. i can end your career.
12:55 am
he says he's not 100% afraid? but i think he's 75%. his promoter and his management, they 1000% afraid. that's why he do all the talking. that's why he has to have them with him at all occasions and times, because the ones that don't have to get in the ring, of course they're going to have the biggest bark. two very different personalities, two big fights. that's it from us for now. you can get all the latest sports news at the bbc sport app or our website. but from the end the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye for now. —— but from me and the rest of the team. hello there. it's a rather cloudy start to the new week, but there should be a lot more sunshine emerging for most of us on tuesday. that's quite a mixed
12:56 am
week of weather ahead. it will be tricky for travelling at times in the run up to christmas, with more rain to come in the forecast, turning very windy too on thursday and friday. and in the colder—feeling air, there could even be a few wintry showers at times, especially over the high ground, of course. and there's currently cold air sinking southwards. milder air lasts across southern areas of england and south wales for a time too, but then it's gradually moving again. it's a soggy, very wet start to the day on tuesday across southern england and wales. that heavy rain eventually clearing, but not until we get to the afternoon. it's still a legacy of cloud across parts of kent and sussex until the end of the day. but lots of more sunshine emerging further north and west, with a brisk north—westerly wind and some showers just moving through into north—west scotland. again, wintry over the hills, temperatures dropping through the afternoon, but it's only a brief colder spell because, then, things will start to turn a lot milder from the west as we head through tuesday night. temperatures dropping lowest out towards the east, rising through the night
12:57 am
for these western spots, with that warm front gradually pushing further eastwards through the day on wednesday. you can see the winds turning a little bit more westerly. and there will be some rain across north—west scotland, north—west england and northern ireland, western wales for a time. the further south and east you are, the drier your wednesday is likely to be, but there'll be a lot of cloud around, some rather murky conditions and some mist and fog too. but temperatures rising back up again into double figures pretty much across the board. but again, that mild air is not set to last because it's going to turn colder again, very cold for some spots on thursday with this cold front sinking southwards. a very brisk north—westerly wind, tight squeeze on the isobars there, and there'll be gales across the far north of scotland, gusts of wind here of up to 70 to 80 miles an hour. very brisk winds for irish sea coasts, and also for north sea—facing coasts, there could be a coastal surge too, possibly blizzard—like conditions with wintry showers across parts of scotland. again, a very tight squeeze on those isobars as we head into friday. so strong winds yet again. we're into colder—feeling air and there'll be plenty of added wind chill. but as you can see, the mild air is still not too far away,
12:58 am
and that will be working its way in from the west again as we head through saturday, possibly turning colder once more for the second half of the weekend. bye— bye.
