been evacuated from their homes. i'm basically here just to empty my house as much as i could and taking the essentials. seismic events are causing cracks in concrete. it started shaking so bad, and we figured it's time to go. as the sky glows red over the land of fire and ice. now there's an eruption here near grindavik. and we have cleared the town and the area. and now we're just securing the area. everybody... evacuation. terrible. just getting things for my kids and getting out of here. so what does this latest eruption mean for the people who live nearby? it's late at night in december 2023. and i want to bring you some breaking news, because a volcano in southwest iceland has erupted following weeks of intense earthquake activity. now we can show you

some of the pictures. you can see the yellow lava erupting from the ground like a fountain. the eruption started approximately four kilometres north of a fishing town grindavik after 10:15 at night local time. webcams caught the moment the magma burst through the surface. translation: the eruption seems to be quite large. - the fissure is about 2.5 to 3 kilometres long, and the lava flow is estimated to be at least 100 cubic meters per second. so this eruption is quite big for this area. but this is a large eruption and the lava flow can change very quickly. this latest round of activity has seen authorities in iceland over a course of weeks brace parts of the country. some extraordinary images coming in to us here at the bbc. and this has been a waiting game.

how tricky has it been to predict| when this moment would come? about a month ago, there was like this storm of seismic activity as a huge volume of magma was shifting underground and then rose up right beneath this town, which was what prompted its evacuation. so last night, you know, there was another earthquake swarm and then this explosion and this lava fountaining towards the sky. and thank goodness it's to the northeast of this town. the danger is not done yet. this is as close as we could get to the volcano before the authorities stopped us. overnight, more lava has continued to flow. and this is something that is very difficult to predict, which is why the authorities are warning people to stay away from this area for their safety. icelanders are familiar with volcanic activity. known as the land of fire and ice, the country is home to several volcanoes and straddles two tectonic plates.
