hello, welcome to sportsday. i'm paul scott at the bbc sports centre. here's what's coming up. var controversy once again — dominic calvert—lewin sees red, as everton draw 0—0 at crystal palace in the fa cup. declan rice tells us of his pride in arsenal's attempts to tackle knife crime in london, ahead of their fa cup tie with liverpool. i am obviously in a fortunate position where i have become a footballer, and i was that young kid once that look up to people like myself. it's an honour. and a smashing return to action — rafael nadal is through to the quarterfinals of the brisbane international.

hello, welcome to the program. the magic of the fa cup was perhaps in short supply as ten—man everton drew 0—0 at crystal palace on thursday. the third round tie was overshadowed by a controversial var intervention. joe wilson reports. almost as old as football itself — the fa cup, not roy hodgson. definitely third round—weather. both managers picked strong teams. everton began with some purpose, especially danjuma. henderson's hand saved crystal palace there. it was important that palace took advantage of opportunities like free kicks. hit the target, eh? everton have been hoping that dominic calvert—lewin will rediscover his best goal—scoring form — not here. calvert—lewin was trying, competing for the ball. anything to see there? well, there was, once var slowed it down and replayed it, and perceived enough contact from studs for a straight red card.

that is cup football in 202a. what else? well, dwight mcneil was stretchered off. berto and anderson had a kind of wrestle — no everton penalty given. and palace had the best late chance to score a goal — a goal, that's one thing this game didn't have. joe wilson, bbc news. juventus are through to the quarterfinals of the coppa italia, after a comprehensive win over salernitana. the visitors actually took the lead in the first minute, but afterjuve equalised, they never looked back, winning 6—1. they'll face frosinone in the last eight. meanwhile, over in spain, barcelona stay third in la liga, after coming from behind to beat ten—man las planas 2—1. they needed a penalty in injury time from ilkay gundogan to secure the win. athletic bilbao won 2—0 at struggling sevilla. osasuna beat bottom club almeria 1—0.

back in england, arguably the tie of the fa cup third round this weekend sees arsenal host premier league leaders, liverpool. the gunners will play in an all—white kit, as part of their ongoing campaign to tackle knife crime in london. 18 teenagers were killed in the city last year, as a result of being stabbed. midfielder declan rice says the club's actions can have an impact in bringing those numbers down. he's been speaking to nesta mcgregor. commentator: good tackle, declan rice. declan rice, a central midfielder known for being a tough tackler. the challenge from declan rice is brilliant. an england international, he recently swapped west ham for arsenal in a transfer worth more than £100 million. although this weekend, his new club are swapping their iconic red shirts for an all—white one. no more red. no more red. it's part of arsenal's no more red campaign,

an initiative aimed at tackling youth knife crime in london. you know, i was that young kid once that looked up to people like myself and it's an honour, for me to be able to help young kids, to be able to talk, to be able to use my voice to show that i was a youngster once and that i've been in tough positions as well. you know, for me, it's all about youngsters growing up now being happy, feeling comfortable in their environment, and things like what no more red have done with the pitches and them types of spots. it's obviously such a massive initiative that young people can feed off. according to official figures, 18 teenagers were fatally stabbed in london in 2023, with one of the attacks taking place less than two miles from arsenal's emirates stadium. no more red aims to create safe spaces for young people, including regenerating football pitches where they can play, have better access to trusted role models, and make a positive impact on their community. the campaign is in its third year, and for people like kai, it's been life—changing. now 22, he's a qualified football coach — an opportunity he feels

may not have come about without the scheme. the benefit for me is just seeing kids, you know, not going down that bad route. i want them to be safe, ensure they're having fun. young people nowadays have a mindset where they don't know what to do. i'm so thankful for my mum that day. she took me down and i look at that my mum and i think to myself, how different could my life have been and it'sjust, a blessing, you know? so, arsenal clearly have an effect on and off the pitch in north london, and declan rice says it's a responsibility he and the club take very seriously. you see stories all the time about knife crime and things that are going on. you see the ages of these things and obviously it's terrible to see. it seems like it's getting younger. it's about education, it's about having the right support networks, having people that they can speak to, whether it's at school or a safe place, have a think about the situation you're about to put yourself into if you're thinking about doing something, what's going to happen after that and how it's going to impact your life,
2:51 am
it's not worth it. just 25 years old, the arsenal midfielder is considered a future england captain and this weekend he will be hoping to make more strong statements of the footballing kind when arsenal host liverpool in the fa cup third round. nesta mcgregor, bbc news. rafael nadal, injust his second match back after nearly a year out injured, has comfortably beaten jason kubler in straight sets to make it through to the quarterfinals of the brisbane international. the spaniard, who had a hip operation last year, is using the tournament as a warm—up ahead of the australian open. he dropped just three games, winning 6—1, 6—2. he'll now playjordon thompson in the last eight. the quarterfinal will be nadal*s first since wimbledon in 2022. for me, i have the chance to play again tomorrow, it means a lot to me and the victory after a long time being outside of the professional tour is something that made me feel
2:52 am
good and happy for that, and i can't thank enough everybody. emma radacanu, who's also on the comeback trail, is out of the auckland classic after being beaten by second seed elina svitolina in three sets. she too was playing just her second match after nine months out with injury, and there were encouraging signs for radacanu, who won the first set on the tie break. but svitolina won the next two to come through 6—7, 7—6, 6—1. england rugby union head coach steve borthwick says defence coach kevin sinfield will leave the coaching set—up later in the year. it comes as borthwick announced new appointments as part of a reshuffled backroom team. sinfield has been borthwick*s right—hand man since leaving leicester to take up the england job at the end of 2022. kevin and i met a couple of weeks after the world cup, and he made the decision to go in a different direction. this coming year and away from the england team. we try to reset this england

team over the last 12 months, what kev has brought cannot be overstated. the enormous amount he's brought to this team. luke littler has been included in this year's premier league darts following his unlikely run to the world championship final. despite his defeat to luke humphries on wednesday, the 16—year—old manchester united fan has gained many new fans. matt graveling spoke to him earlier. it's been a roller—coaster. i'm glad i was a part of a good final. me and luke averaged over 100 each. loads of 1—4. loads of 180s and both had a 170. the big fish in there. but he deserved it. he played the better darts. were you able to sleep last night without really thinking about that double 2, which 4—2, could have made it 5—2, butjust outside? i think that's the only negative about the game. it could have gone a three—set lead up and then i would have been two away. but it was a lot of traveller's visits. a lot of 58s and 59s, which i've got to work on,
2:54 am
because if you do that against luke, when he's on an 18—game winning streak and he's won the past three majors, then i'll punish you, and that's what he's done. we love a good sports story in the media, and you created one for us. thank you for the fairy tale, first and foremost. i mean, a lot of that was generated because you are 16. every time we talked about you, "16 years old, 16 years old". as somebody in the middle of it, how does it make you feel to have your age attached to all of your achievement at the moment? that's what people are going to say. i've got a nice beard. people are 16 without one hair so laughs. and older people! but it'sjust been going on for years. when i was 1a, they were saying he's not 1a, he's not 15, but i'm not bothered. i know i'm 16. like i said, it's been going on for years now, but ijust block it out, laugh at them, don't even reply to them, don't give them my time. and who's messaged you that you've been really impressed with or blown away or star—struck by? i could name so many. but the big ones — david beckham,

he said well done. once a red always a red. and then rio ferdinand wants me on his podcast. jaackmaate wants me on his podcast. it's all crazy. i've got luke shaw as well, and jesse lingard, who's been supporting me. it's just crazy. promising career ahead. don't forget, you can get details on the bbc sport app and the website. from myself and the rest of the sports team, thank you for watching. see you next time. hello. after the exceptional rainfall and the significant flooding of the last few days, you may well be pleased to hear that the weather is set to change.
2:56 am
the next few days will be drier, yes, also colder, but i'm sure some lower temperatures will be a small price to pay for less in the way of rain. we certainly saw some rain on thursday in the south of the uk, thanks to this hook of cloud. that's an area of low pressure still close by for the first part of friday morning, still bringing some rain across eastern parts of england. we've also still got some showery rain from this weather system, centred across the north of scotland. so, as we head through the morning on friday, yes, still a little bit of rain across eastern england, quite a brisk wind, as well. still windy for the northern isles, and generally cloud and some showery rain across the northeast of scotland. further west, though, some brighter skies, some spells of sunshine and, while there will be some showers, there probably won't be too many, and a decent amount of dry weather. those temperatures a touch lower than they have been — 6 degrees for aberdeen, nine for cardiff, for plymouth, maybe 10 for the channel islands. and then, as we head through friday night, we'll keep some quite large amounts of cloud, especially across the eastern half of the uk, with some showery rain. drier out west with

some clear spells and just one or two showers. that will give rise to some fog patches and a touch of frost for some. temperatures across parts of northern england, scotland, northern ireland are likely to drop below freezing. so, frost and fog to start the day for some of us on saturday. quite a lot of cloud across the eastern half of england. that will break up to some extent, and i think we will see some spells of sunshine. just one or two showers here and there, but a much drier story than we've been used to. temperatures coming down again, 5—9 celsius at best. through saturday nights, the last remnants of this weather system really clearing away, as high pressure builds more strongly across the uk. that will set us up actually for the forecast for next week and certainly on sunday, we're looking at a lot of dry weather. some early mist and fog, touch of frost in places, but some spells of sunshine. small chance of one or two showers maybe across northeast scotland, also grazing the southeast of england and the channel islands. and it certainly will be a colder—feeling day,
