in germany, because beckenbauer headed up the initial bid in 2000 and he was part of the competition's organising committee, and it was something of a dark period in beckenbauer*s life, because the rest of it was also crazy with his prowess and his impressive, everyone he and won on the pitch and off it as well. —— everett and he had won. he helped bayern munich hugely as well. he was known for helping them progress to first bundesliga and then he was made captain, this was backin then he was made captain, this was back in the 68—59 season, and lead them to the top flight at the first time of asking. he became an inspirational and consistently huge figure for buying munich leading them to a hat—trick of the mystic titles from 1972 to 1974 as well as loosely european tidily mentioned, and that the age of 20,001 he made his debut for west germany in a world cup qualifier, and of course he went on to win the world cup with

5:23 pm
and about seven hours after liftoff, we got a statement from the private exploration company in pittsburgh in the us, astrobotic, saying that their spacecraft had experienced an anomaly of some kind, that is what they use, the word they use when something is not quite right. the spacecraft, they were going through the standard checkouts that you do on a spacecraft when it comes off the top of a rocket, you go through its systems and power everything up, check the data to see that it is all working properly, and one of the things the spacecraft has to do, one of the first things it has to do, is to point its solar panels at the sun. that's how you maintain power — and without power, you don't have a mission. it has got to keep its batteries topped up. unfortunately, the spacecraft, as astrobotic have said, has not been able to point at the sun stably. quite what that means,
5:24 pm
it's not clear from the statement. it could mean that it is doing it some of the time but then is losing track of where the sun is in the sky. so it may be topping up its batteries a bit and then losing track of the sun and then the batteries are starting to discharge. their engineers are working on it at the moment. they will have rehearsed many times scenarios just like this, and they will have a fault tree they will be going through, trying to sort it out. by no means is this mission over yet. they will be working their way through what they think is wrong with it, and it should also be said that spacecraft have a fair degree of autonomy, so the spacecraft itself will recognise it is not doing what it is supposed to do and then it will prioritise its systems. and before we go, a reminder of that developing a story that came into us, that former german footballer and manager frans beckenbauer has died at the age of 78, that announcement coming from his family.
5:25 pm
franz b beckenbauer held a very unique position. he won the world cup as a player in 1974 and again as a manager in 1990, and these are pictures of him early in his career. a statement from his family to a german news agency said that they had deep sadness at the loss of husband and father franz beckenbauer. we ask that you allow us to grieve in silence and refrain from asking any questions. franz beckenbauer, who has died at the age of 78. hello. there are still well over 100 flood warnings in force, so the flooding situation hasn't fully resolved itself,
5:26 pm
but things should improve over the next few days. today, though, the main talking point, isuppose, is the chance of seeing a few flurries of snow working in across parts of the east. it's not very exciting snow, to be honest with you. in most cases it's not going to settle, you'lljust see a few flakes like this. in one or two areas, you might see an odd centimeter or two building in. i think the main threat, though, is that the weather could turn quite icy across these parts of east anglia and south—east england. the satellite picture shows extensive cloud cover today and with the winds continuing to blow in from the east, it does feel cold if you're out and about. a few showers coming in to eastern areas of scotland, mostly falling as rain. and we've also got some rain showers moving in across northern ireland. it's a day where those temperatures are really struggling. highs between four and six degrees for most. now heading into this evening and overnight, particularly where we've seen showers by day, there's a risk of some ice developing. so east scotland, northern ireland, eastern and southern areas of england, probably the iciest spots if you like. but anywhere where we see water seeping in from those fields after that recent spell of very heavy rain could also have the roads and pavements turn pretty icy.
5:27 pm
so tomorrow morning, another cold day, frosty and icy start. and we continue to see the winds coming in generally from an easterly direction. now, there should be a much better chance of seeing cloud breaks across parts of midlands, eastern and south east england. it's a bit more sunshine here, but otherwise still probably quite a lot of cloud around thick enough to continue to bring showers into eastern scotland and northeast england and little difference for the temperatures. it will be another very cold feeling day. the wind starts to turn more to a northeasterly direction on wednesday and that will push the cloud southward. so most areas having a cloud delay, maybe a few breaks so most areas having a cloudy day. maybe a few breaks for northern ireland, west scotland, northwest england. but the best of the sunshine is most likely across southern counties of england. temperatures still below average for the time of year for most of us. and really, as we look at the forecast through the rest of the week and into the weekend, it stays generally on the chilly sides with some further sharp morning frost to come. however, into next week, things get a bit more exciting. the winds come round to a more
5:28 pm
northerly direction. it stays cold, but there's an increasing threat next week that we could see some snow. that's latest.
