hello, and welcome to sportsday. i'm jane dougall. after middle spirit of*s victory over chelsea, anfield is the stage for tonight's league cup semifinal between fulham and liverpool — with the home side looking to go on and win the competition for a record tenth time. —— middlesbrough*s victory. the seedings for the first grand slam of the year have been announced. novak djokovic is the australian open top seed, with world number one iga swiatek top for the women's draw. and we'll be live at the alexandra palace for the masters where mark allen is taking on two time winnerjohn higgins. welcome to the programme.

we start with the league cup where it's advantage middlesbrough in their two—leg semi final against chelsea. they go into the second match a goal up after their 1—0 victory last night. later, fulham travel to anfield in the second semifinal, we'll hear from both their managers in just a moment, but first patrick gearey looks back on a famous night on teesside. commentator: hayden hackney! they're halfway there. only one goal and only one leg, but look what it meant. for hayden hackney, for middlesbrough, this was some statement. teesside pride — you could see it and feel it before kick—off, even if, initially, boro couldn't channel it. cole palmer might have punished them — should have punished them. because little more than five minutes later, the championship side bypassed chelsea and got to hackney. hayden isjust 21, born down the road in redcar — one of their own. if that was the glory, now they'd need guts and luck. another chance for palmer, another life for boro.

chelsea have spent more than £1 billion on players, but their purchases have come with no guarantee. they still have the second leg, they still have time, but do they command patience? boro know they have a long way to go, but they travel with the comfort that, on the other side of chelsea, is wembley. patrick gearey, bbc news. of course i am disappointed, because i think we deserve another lesson, but sometimes you play well and you win, and for us it is like we need to play well, we need to score goals, we play well, and sometimes we are punished. that is the process in this moment that we are. in 15 days, in two weeks, we are going to have the second tie, and be positive that we can win the game and go to

for me, your body shape doesn't determine you need to play the sport. a lot of people see the athletes as these robots that don't have certain elements that may be other human beings have in terms of the way their body looks, and the way their body reacts to certain situations. it was really important to highlight that side of it, because i have been on the end of some comments. my team—mates have also been on the end of some comments. other clubs, a lot of people reached out to me after the documentary saying, thank you, we know about a girl in our team who are struggling with this. we are really appreciated. i've had comments where people go, oh, "fran played really, "really well today, what a game, but she looks a little "bit big today." and i'm like, "but why is the comment necessary, then?" if i've played well and you think that i've been one of the best players on the pitch, it shouldn't matter how my body shape is.
1:39 pm
if someone wants to criticise me, if my manager wants to pull me into a meeting and say i'm not performing because of this, absolutely, i will take it on—board. for me, performance is the most important thing. i don't really have the fear of speaking out about any more. you don't become accustomed to it. of course, you know, there's still things that you read. i read things about myself and i'm like, "oh, really?" "is that what people think about me, or is that how i look? you know, and it still impacts me. but, you know, i'm kind of a bit more better with dealing with that, whereas a younger player maybe coming through that gets a comment like that could end up, you know, not eating. and having to compete at a high level, and you see their performance drop, and it really impacts these young players coming through. ijust felt it was important for people to realise, as long as you are fit to play your sport, at the highest level, and that can impact in terms of your body shape and how you are, but for me, if you are at that level and you are consistently performing well, for me, body shape shouldn't be a conversation.—

on the faulty horizon it system. this is what the prime minister told the commons. today, i can announce that we will introduce new primary legislation to make sure that those convicted as a result of the horizon scandal are swiftly exonerated and compensated. we will also introduce a new upfront payment of £75,000 for the vital glo group of postmasters. and can i thank my honourable friend, the memberfor thirsk and malton, for all his hard work on this issue? he will set out more details to the house shortly. we will make sure that the truth comes to light, we right the wrongs of the past, and the victims get the justice they deserve. after prime minister's questions, the post office minister kevin hollinrake added a bit more detail. the whole house is united on this, and i believe that in the light of last week's excellent itv series, the whole nation is united on it

too. we have all been removed by the stories of postmasters who have been unjustly affected, and the two decades of effect on their finances, health and relationships. indeed, we have seen whole lives ruined by this brutal and arbitrary exercise of power. hundreds of convictions remain excellent. some of those convictions will have arrived on the evidence of the discredited horizon system. others will have been the result of appalling failure is of the post office's investigations and prosecution functions. the evidence already emerging from sir william's inquiry is not only showing incompetence but malevolence and some of their actions. this is evidence that was not available to the courts that was —— when they made their decisions on some of the cases.
