am katrina perry. we are live here in iowa where donald trump is a projected winner of the caucus here. that news comes as republicans gathered at churches, schools and various polling locations to choose their party but i presidential nomination through this unique process. while the former president is projected to be the winner of former government judgement governor are both in a close fight for second place. we are still waiting to find out who could take that coveted runner—up spot and it may be some time before we have all of the results to hand. we can speak now to our north america editor sarah smith who is at donald trump's watch party in des moines. this is an important win for donald trump. what does it mean for his campaign?— what does it mean for his cam aian? ~ campaign? well, we will find out exactly — campaign? well, we will find out exactly what _ campaign? well, we will find out exactly what it _ campaign? well, we will find out exactly what it means . campaign? well, we will find i out exactly what it means when we know how big his victory is because it is not exactly a huge surprise to anybody that
2:01 am
he is projected to be the winner of the iowa caucus. it was so far ahead in the polls. what we don't know is what is marginal victory is. did he for instance old more votes than all of his rivals put together? as a possibly beaten the record marginal victory that has been in republican caucuses here before which is 12 points. he could have beaten that by quite some measure. and the size of his victory, that could tell us something about how long it will take before we know who the republican nominee is going to be. the bigger the victory donald trump scores in each one of these early states, the sooner he will probably become the candidate. iowa is able —— i was able to grab a word with his earlier and asked how quickly they could get this all wrapped up. he said he believes his father donald trump will definitely be the nomine by super tuesday which is on march the fifth this year. they are really optimistic that if they win these early states by large margins that could be over much sooner than that because you
2:02 am
can tell they are really eager to get this part of the process out of the way and move on to being able to attractjoe biden rather than having to fight off the republican rivals for the nomination.— the republican rivals for the nomination. and if the former president _ nomination. and if the former president is — nomination. and if the former president is keen _ nomination. and if the former president is keen to _ nomination. and if the former president is keen to move - nomination. and if the formerj president is keen to move on, is there any sense that he might maybe make an early victory speech there tonight and he continued hampshire straightaway? —— and kick onto new hampshire. hat straightaway? -- and kick onto new hampshire.— straightaway? -- and kick onto new hampshire. not quite sure when we will — new hampshire. not quite sure when we will hear _ new hampshire. not quite sure when we will hear from - new hampshire. not quite sure when we will hear from him. i new hampshire. not quite sure | when we will hear from him. he when we will hearfrom him. he may wish to know who has come second because that doesn't matter to him a bit. it will determine how the rest of this race shapes up. it is quite different for both of the candidates stop if ron desantis come second, that keeps his candidacy alive. if he drops to third place, that is serious because he invested a huge amount in ior. he has put a lot of work in here, visiting all 99 counties in ior. he really has worked hard at this ——
2:03 am
iowa. comes third, he could pull out of the race. nikki haley could be a ford third place but she wants to come second because that will give her the momentum owing into new hampshire, i stayed where she might do better and might come close to donald trump. the shape of the race will be determined by who comes second and it is possible donald trump may wish to find that out before he comes to speak to us here, as you can probably hear behind me they were entertainers with plenty of loud music before the former president arrives on stage. i've got all the while the legal difficulties, if we can call them that, are bubbling away for donald trump and news he will attend the ejean carroll hearing tomorrow. he will attend the e jean carroll hearing tomorrow. yes, that is quite — carroll hearing tomorrow. yes, that is quite telling, _ carroll hearing tomorrow. yes, that is quite telling, isn't - that is quite telling, isn't it, that he is planning to go from here from what we presume will be his victory to court in new york, a difficult case, and then still keep his appointment to do a rally in new hampshire
2:04 am
and the next day. these court appearances for donald trump our campaign eventsjust appearances for donald trump our campaign events just as much as rallies and the speeches are because he knows that one of the reasons voters have flopped back to him is because they really do perceive these criminal indictments against him, the court cases and the prosecutions as deeply unjust. lots and lots of voters believe him when he says that he is the victim of political persecution, this is his enemy trying to stop him being able to return to the white house. it is one of the reasons why we have seen the support for donald trump take up so much as we have over the course of the last year. so it could of course, over the course of the next 12 months, make a very obligated for him to campaign and keep all of the court dates he is going to have, but as of now, is able to use them as a campaign platform and that is why he is choosing to go to new york and be seen in court tomorrow.

2:06 am
can see it here means we are getting live data coming in so i would just update that is if we have any clearer information. still ron desantis information. still ron desantis in second place. let's take a look at some of the areas that merely donald trump appears to be doing well in. starting in the north—west of iowa, lion county for example, some know the evangelical vote is important to know. ron desantis campaign hard for that and we can see right now still one out of ten pressings counted. nevertheless donald trump there with 72% of the vote before ron desantis then claims second place. if we just move down here to sue county, again, somewhere else where religious conservatism is important, and here you can see ron desantis, yes, he is in first place with 39% of the vote. no great surprise because this proved a very tricky county for donald trump, his worst performing one
2:07 am
in 2016 when he lost to ted cruz. no big surprises there. if we move down the map and we take a look at the areas of plymouth, woodbury underneath as well, these are areas that increasingly have been more economically disadvantaged, more blue—collar workers and they have been tending to lean towards the less conservative but populist candidate here, we can see donald trump with 68%. if we move over here, something of a twin county essentially, another river county with a high proportion of blue—collar workers, donald trump strongly there with 71%. if we take a look at some of the areas where we can see nikki haley managing to put out in front, sorry for example, alsojohnson. these example, also johnson. these are example, alsojohnson. these are areas where you have a larger density of urban population. a lot of votes up for grabs, more college voters for grabs, more college voters for example. she is in first place in these areas but there
2:08 am
are six of these counties so far and only two at the moment turning purple for nikki haley. if she wanted to have a really good night she would be moving more into the rural areas to show that she has the crossover appeal. we are not seeing it yet. one area i want to show you, though. this is black hawk. if we go back to 2008 and onwards it is seen as something of a bellwether county. whatever happens in black hawk, we tend to see those statewide results mirroring that. so far only nine out of 59 pressings counted, but what you are seeing here, donald trump with 42%, here we have nikki haley jumping to second place with 30%, ron desantis with i7% and we can just zoom out. that reflect what we are seeing statewide? not currently at the moment. donald trump still sitting strong with 50%. his campaign was really hoping to seek 50%, still only 4% of pressings counted but ultimately according to the
2:09 am
bbc*s news partner cbs, right now they are projecting that donald trump could be taking 16 out of those a0 delegates. the a0 delegates of course just represent i.6% a0 delegates of course just represent 1.6% of the delegates up represent 1.6% of the delegates up for grabs when it comes to the republican national convention. but still at this early stage still donald trump putting in a strong performance, and if things were to stay like this, he would be beating that record victory that we have seen by bob dole. 0k, that we have seen by bob dole. ok, helena. thanks for that. we will check in with you later for an update. what does a win for an update. what does a win for donald trump mean forjoe biden? democrats are closely monitoring to see how this night takes shape in an election year where the current president is gearing up for a tough fight against the former president. for more on this, i am joined by president. for more on this, i amjoined by an president. for more on this, i am joined by an iowa state representative and leader of the iowa democrats. thank you forjoining us on bbc news. what is your reaction to what looks like the inevitable bit

2:26 am
and then, we will see frequent snow showers in northern scotland. this area of snowfall in central and southern scotland, this could bring snow to quite low levels. for northern ireland and for northern england, at low levels, it may be that we see some rain and some sleet mixing in — most of the significant snow over high ground — but there could be some travel disruption, say, over the high—level routes in the pennines. to the south of that, well, mostly dry with some spells of crisp winter sunshine. maybe not quite as cold in southern counties of england or south wales, whereas parts of scotland will stay below freezing all day long. and in scotland, we'll see further snowfall during tuesday evening. it could cause some disruption for the rush hour. mix of rain, sleet, and snow across parts of northern england into wales. the odd snow shower pushing down across the midlands. a very, very cold night indeed, some places likely to get to —10 in the highlands. now for wednesday, we're keeping a close eye on this area of low pressure, which is moving its way in towards france, but it mayjust graze this weather system close enough to southern counties of england to bring the risk of a bit of light sleet and snow here. we'll keep an eye on that one for you. the channel islands seeing rain, maybe something wintry mixing in. elsewhere, sunny spells, a scattering of wintry showers,

over and look at one of the urban areas. linn is important because it is home to cedar rapids, the second largest urban area in iowa and something when nikki haley has been focusing her attention. it paid off to right now we can see early days but still 2a.a%. that is where we have seen her jumping to second position. that is something she is wanting to be doing in all of these urban areas because we have 75,000 votes up for grabs. let's check in as well with our bellwether state, we can go to blackhawk. nine out of 59 pressings counted, a2% for donald trump and nikki haley with 30% which would be a phenomenal night for her were that to be the case. what we have seen since 2008, what happened in blackhawk can then happened in blackhawk can then happen he will take three percentage points, and if we zoom out again and see where we are with 7% operating counted,

staff and volunteers in this room, they are filing in as we speak and i think there is a mood of let's wait and see because, as you said, many of these caucuses are still taking place, there could still be some votes being cast and that is crucial, and as our cbs partner is projecting that donald trump has won the iowa caucus, there are still a very big battle for that second place, we will still wait to get those results in. you can also send some frustration from the dissenters campaign itself. we saw a tweet coming from the director of communications —— ron desantis. he said it was absolutely outrageous that the media would participate in election interference as he is calling it by calling the race before tens of thousands of iowans even have a chance to vote. i think some of the frustration there is that everybody with a cellphone got a text message alert

potentially saying that, hey, donald trump is projected to win the iowa caucus. there is a sense that may be somebody who's still trying to make up their mind, they see the results come in and they might change their vote one way or another or not given the chance to cast their ballots. that is one of the special things about the iowa aukus. there are chances and times where voters come into the room and they might be swayed one way or another given what they hear from a speech in the beginning —— iowa caucus. i was at a caucus site earlier today, i was speaking with some caucus colours. all three of them interestingly were first time caucus colours. many of them had one candidate in mind tonight and it was donald trump. here is what some of them told me. donald trump is facing for criminal indictments, a lot of legal trouble right now. how much does that concern you as a voter? ., ., * does that concern you as a voter? ., ., ~ .. .,, , voter? none, none. all across the state _ voter? none, none. all across the state is — voter? none, none. all across the state is hands _ voter? none, none. all across the state is hands down - voter? none, none. all across| the state is hands down donald trump — the state is hands down donald trump. we are sending him back

method resonated with voters. he is locked in a battle with nikki haley, we have seen him going after her many times at the debate, it is very clear that he not only knows that i've course he would like to win iowa, but it is very obvious that a second—place finish tonight is crucial, this is a state where ron desantis has essentially gone all in, all 99 counties, he has a very sophisticated and very expensive and very invested game here as well. it is going to be a situation here tonight. as we continue to watch the reactions, we will see what the mood is like. it seems like for now everybody is willing to sit back and watch and see how a potential battle for second place plays out here tonight. as we are a for a lot of those numbers still to come in for the lot of those numbers still to come in. we get a good picture so far but still plenty of time to go. i want to talk about the major issue for voters in iowa and the us public is immigration. the biden administration has been

struggling to address some of these record numbers of migrants who have been crossing over the southern us border, and all of the leading candidates in this race, republicans have been talking very tough on immigration, talking about the policies that need to be enacted on the southern border. i want to do with you congressman. what exactly have you seen from these candidates in terms of an approach, in terms of a plan other than the former president who says build that wall is two what is the approach here to solve what they say the biden administration can't do? this is the reason _ administration can't do? this is the reason why _ administration can't do? in 3 is the reason why donald trump has run away with the iowa caucus *s tonight. because donald trump can say do what i did, reinstitute the remaining mexico policy that front instituted and actually create an atmosphere where migrants don't want to break our laws and break into our country. really, this is a problem that the biden administration has in the biden administration has in the biden administration has in the biden campaign has because they can't anchor the progressive left anymore by

policy issues because it does not get talked about that much during the election process. we will talk more when we head back to iowa and get more numbers. please, stay with bbc news. hello. this week is certainly shaping up to bring some of the coldest and snowiest weather of the winter so far. we started the week on monday in the grip of this arctic air. cold northerly winds feeding frequent wintry showers, especially into northern, eastern, and some western parts of the uk. tuesday remains cold — snow and ice will cause problems for some. but a slight shift in the wind direction, more of a west or northwesterly wind, so that means not as many showers across eastern parts, more showers out towards the west. and then, this little frontal system here, this is going to generate a mix of rain, sleet and snow

across the northern half of the uk. ice as we move through the morning, that could cause some quite poor travelling conditions. and then, we will see frequent snow showers in northern scotland. this area of snowfall in central and southern scotland, this could bring snow to quite low levels. for northern ireland and for northern england, at low levels, it may be that we see some rain and some sleet mixing in — most of the significant snow over high ground — but there could be some travel disruption, say, over the high—level routes in the pennines. to the south of that, well, mostly dry with some spells of crisp winter sunshine. maybe not quite as cold in southern counties of england or south wales, whereas parts of scotland will stay below freezing all day long. and in scotland, we'll see further snowfall during tuesday evening. it could cause some disruption for the rush hour. mix of rain, sleet, and snow across parts of northern england into wales. the odd snow shower pushing down across the midlands. a very, very cold night indeed, some places likely to get to —10 in the highlands. now for wednesday, we're keeping a close eye on this area of low pressure, which is moving its way in towards france, but it mayjust graze this weather system close enough

to southern counties of england to bring the risk of a bit of light sleet and snow here. we'll keep an eye on that one for you. the channel islands seeing rain, maybe something wintry mixing in. elsewhere, sunny spells, a scattering of wintry showers, a very cold—feeling day. many places around or, perhaps in some spots, below freezing even through the afternoon. now that weather system moves away. thursday will bring further snow showers. high pressure builds in for friday, so it is a drier end to the week for many. and then, we start to develop a westerly wind. atlantic weather systems will bring wind and rain, and something milder as we head into the weekend, so this cold spell may not last all that long.
