speeches in the past where donald trump can come out fire and brimstone, on a revenge tour, criticising people, that is not what we are saying tonight and that is because he is very clearly not that concerned, he had a very good night and is trying to project he's floating above all these other people and he can afford to them on the head and say, good job, to them on the head and say, goodjob, guys, to them on the head and say, good job, guys, you to them on the head and say, goodjob, guys, you are to them on the head and say, good job, guys, you are very smart people. is good job, guys, you are very smart people-— good job, guys, you are very smart people. is that what we are seeing? — smart people. is that what we are seeing? we _ smart people. is that what we are seeing? we order - smart people. is that what we are seeing? we order saw - smart people. is that what we | are seeing? we order saw him pivoting towards the general election. he pivoting towards the general election. ., pivoting towards the general election. . ., ., ., election. he gave all of them a cookie! good _ election. he gave all of them a cookie! good job _ election. he gave all of them a cookie! good job for _ election. he gave all of them a cookie! good job for your - cookie! good job for your performance today. i think the president— performance today. i think the president knows how to be magnanimous. we have seen from time _ magnanimous. we have seen from time to— magnanimous. we have seen from time to time he displays that and often to the lay in amazement of the media. it is easy— amazement of the media. it is easy to — amazement of the media. it is easy to be _ amazement of the media. it is easy to be magnanimous when you have a _ easy to be magnanimous when you have a 30 — easy to be magnanimous when you have a 30 point lead and most likely— have a 30 point lead and most likely the _ have a 30 point lead and most likely the republican nominee, but we — likely the republican nominee, but we would have seen this from — but we would have seen this from him _ but we would have seen this from him regardless. he gets

administration, willing to focus squarely on donald trump. as i have been, this entire time. i think if they were looking at a general election campaign against nikki haley, early polling would tell them to be very worried. more worried than the race against donald trump. everybody remembers 2016 where everyone thought donald trump would be the weakest republican rival to go the weakest republican rival to 9° up the weakest republican rival to go up against hillary clinton and we all know what happened. trump is running against himself and in many ways biden is running against himself in his own legacy also. this is really not a contest where you will sway voters because your message is so compelling and you were unknown before. everybody knows both of these guys and they both are carrying some baggage and some strengths. there is a difference between the two. i am not trying to equate them with one another either in
4:06 am
terms of their legacy or their policies or their vulnerabilities, but that is just the reality. you've got a race that nationally the majority of people across the part of them spectrum are alike, really, that is a contest? that is shaping up to be the contest on both sides. that is a great point. let's take a look at some more numbers with helen are standing by at the wall. we will look at everything coming in. take it away. everything coming in. take it awa . ~ . everything coming in. take it awa .~ . 4:07 am
victory look like? his campaign saying, aiming for 50% and above, current indications so he is on for that. the big question of the 90s we will be coming in second place? this isn't the final result but what we can see here is that ron desantis did push ahead, 21.3% of the vote. we were talking about the second and third positions, what would a strong showing look like? it had to be 20% and above. aiming for 25%. you can see there is a big gap between these two candidates, between these two candidates, between donald trump and ron desantis. a quick estimation, something like 28 percentage points, go back to 1988 when bob dole set the record and that margin was 12.8%. essentially doubling it. that shows how resounding donald trump on my performance appears to be tonight. then nikki haley of course appears to have lost some of that momentum that we saw in the polls of course, the poles are not predictors, they are snapshot but she is there
4:08 am
on 19% as opposed to the 20% when she went into this. so how has donald trump been doing this? what have been the strong areas for him? we go to one of his strongest showing that we have seen of the night, performing particularly well with white conservative voters. 74%, really quite incredible and that is ten out of 11 precincts counted there. ron desantis coming in in second position as well. if we look at some of the counties that tend to vote increasingly populist, blue—collar workers, what really has become donald trump's bread and butter, we can see once again 56%, if we hop over here to clinton, again, a lot of votes in this area because that is also important, and again, 69%, particularly strong showing. let's talk about northwest iowa then, the inventor —— evangelical votes, religious conservatives. it was interesting. the question was where we going to see people
4:09 am
rallying around one single candidate or was it going to split? what we have seen here is in lyon, donald trump on top. indications that it would be ron desantis, ultimately it has gone to donald trump and that will be disappointing for the dissenters campaign because theyjust put the dissenters campaign because they just put so the dissenters campaign because theyjust put so much energy into that evangelical vote. that is a snapshot event —— is a pub that has happened and we can cross over now to train in des moines in iowa.- can cross over now to train in des moines in iowa. thank you. we have been _ des moines in iowa. thank you. we have been talking _ des moines in iowa. thank you. we have been talking all - des moines in iowa. thank you. we have been talking all day i we have been talking all day about the impact that the weather might have on turnout, and i can tell you that we have and i can tell you that we have a statement from the chairman of the republican party in iowa, and he is saying that early indications say they are on track that 100,000 iowans took part in caucuses tonight. just to put that in contracts, in 2016, the last time there was a competitive republican primary caucus here, 187,000
4:10 am
people turned out in 2016 and 122,000 turned out in 2012. a big spike for the first time that donald trump contested the caucuses here, but significantly down this year, not surprising with those extremely cold temperatures that have wrapped all around the state. let's take a closer look at the numbers tonight, and what it all means in the race for the republican nomination. a little earlier i spoke with a political pollster. the health warning that we only have a small proportion of precincts fully reported, but it looks like runaway for donald trump, that all of the poles before now had predicted. it all of the poles before now had redicted. , ., ., predicted. it is more than that. predicted. it is more than that- the _ predicted. it is more than that. the fact _ predicted. it is more than that. the fact that - predicted. it is more than that. the fact that he - predicted. it is more than that. the fact that he got| predicted. it is more than - that. the fact that he got 5096 that. the fact that he got 50% of the vote is exactly what he said he was going to do, argument that he used to try to push the other candidates out, that he was getting more votes and all of them combined. it looks like it may be the case, and if that holds, that is a

significant meaningful, measurable entry for the former president. in fact, measurable entry for the former president. infact, nikki haley is fighting with ron desantis for second place that even, it means ron desantis can continue, nikki haley can say she came up. it is not the second—place finish that she wanted and i think it is enough ron desantis to continue. looking at the map as well as we were seeing earlier, and some of those counties where nikki haley is doing very well, it is less conservative areas, more urban areas, so perhaps there are independence, non— partyline individuals are registered as republican tonight to vote against president trump.- tonight to vote against president trump. that is correct. _ president trump. that is correct, but _ president trump. that is correct, but it _ president trump. that is correct, but it is - president trump. that is correct, but it is good i president trump. that is i correct, but it is good news for her ever to say she is the best general election candidate. let's face it, if you win iowa, they help to go forward in a republican primary but it doesn't make you president. herargument, her president. her argument, her biggest president. herargument, her biggest argument is that she is more likely than any of the other candidates to defeatjoe

that can understand and how is manoeuvring himself? he will have the toughest explanation over the next 26 hours, why people should donate to him, whether they should volunteer, going forward, it does look like he will be in second place when it is also done but it is not a strong second—place finish. in the end, it is about money, volunteers, a message, and i think that nikki haley has the stronger case in those three going forward. the real story tonight is a trump was like a massive victory. i5 tonight is a trump was like a massive victory.— massive victory. is it all on academic _ massive victory. is it all on academic conversation i massive victory. is it all on l academic conversation about massive victory. is it all on i academic conversation about who come second, looking out the victory? come second, looking out the victo ? ., , victory? not necessarily because _ victory? not necessarily because you _ victory? not necessarily because you have i victory? not necessarily because you have to i victory? not necessarily i because you have to gather everything to the wind and there are surprises there. the point you made earlier, new hampshire allows independence to vote because there is no real democratic primary, they will move into the republican primary and nikki haley gets

one heat in a long round. it is clear that donald trump thinks the size of his victory here means he will be able to calamia nomination are pretty early this process, maybe long before super tuesday on 5 march. clearly that is what he wants to do. most of his speech was spent talking about what he would do if he does get back into the white house. what he has told us before, he will drill, he will open up more oil drilling in the us, promising to seal the southern us border and stop the levels of immigration that are coming in at the moment. promising to restore the american economy, as he criticises the level of inflation. attacking the presidentjoe biden, who because he was president in the history of america, much more than he attacks his rivals in this republican nomination race. when you listen to him, you would think we are already in the general election. he

trump was so confirmatory of a vivek ramaswamy in his speech. i think his wife looked sad on the stage but looking at their bank account over the next few months, he will be very happy because what it would have taken, what it would have taken for vivek ramaswamy to compete in new hampshire and south carolina in the super tuesday would have been an immense amount of personal investment. this is more of an economic decision by him and his family and a decision on how to save face and move onto the next phase, which is to really rally around trump, to still stay relevant. around trump, to still stay relevant-— relevant. interesting point there. just _ relevant. interesting point there. just therapy - relevant. interesting point there. just therapy the i relevant. interesting point i there. just therapy the news, we have heard that vivek ramaswamy is suspending his campaign. he has been speaking in iowa. he was at around 7.7, 7.8%, so clearly not the numbers his team are hoping for. he is a big supporter of the former presidents and we will see what he plans to do over the coming year. to

support donald trump and his campaign. we will take a little break. we have a lot more to come, there is more to discuss and we were listening to some of the other candidates as well. please see tunes, we're going back to iowa in a little bit. hello. this week is certainly shaping up to bring some of the coldest and snowiest weather of the winter so far. we started the week on monday in the grip of this arctic air. cold northerly winds feeding frequent wintry showers, especially into northern, eastern, and some western parts of the uk. tuesday remains cold — snow and ice will cause problems for some. but a slight shift in the wind direction, more of a west or northwesterly wind, so that means not as many showers across eastern parts, more showers out towards the west. and then, this little frontal system here, this is going to generate a mix of rain, sleet and snow across the northern half of the uk. ice as we move through the morning, that could cause some quite poor travelling conditions.
4:26 am
and then, we will see frequent snow showers in northern scotland. this area of snowfall in central and southern scotland, this could bring snow to quite low levels. for northern ireland and for northern england, at low levels, it may be that we see some rain and some sleet mixing in — most of the significant snow over high ground — but there could be some travel disruption, say, over the high—level routes in the pennines. to the south of that, well, mostly dry with some spells of crisp winter sunshine. maybe not quite as cold in southern counties of england or south wales, whereas parts of scotland will stay below freezing all day long. and in scotland, we'll see further snowfall during tuesday evening. it could cause some disruption for the rush hour. mix of rain, sleet, and snow across parts of northern england into wales. the odd snow shower pushing down across the midlands. a very, very cold night indeed, some places likely to get to —10 in the highlands. now for wednesday, we're keeping a close eye on this area of low pressure, which is moving its way in towards france, but it mayjust graze this weather system close enough to southern counties of england to bring the risk of a bit of light sleet
4:27 am
and snow here. we'll keep an eye on that one for you. the channel islands seeing rain, maybe something wintry mixing in. elsewhere, sunny spells, a scattering of wintry showers, a very cold—feeling day. many places around or, perhaps in some spots, below freezing even through the afternoon. now that weather system moves away. thursday will bring further snow showers. high pressure builds in for friday, so it is a drier end to the week for many. and then, we start to develop a westerly wind. atlantic weather systems will bring wind and rain, and something milder as we head into the weekend, so this cold spell may not last all that long.

bbc news as we always do. to say with us, plenty more to talk about. from all the team, thank you for watching. take care. hello. this week is certainly shaping up to bring some of the coldest and snowiest weather of the winter so far. we started the week on monday in the grip of this arctic air. cold northerly winds feeding frequent wintry showers, especially into northern, eastern, and some western parts of the uk. tuesday remains cold — snow and ice will cause problems for some. but a slight shift in the wind direction, more of a west or northwesterly wind, so that means not as many showers across eastern parts, more showers out towards the west. and then, this little frontal system here, this is going to generate a mix of rain, sleet and snow across the northern half of the uk. ice as we move through the morning, that could cause some quite poor travelling conditions. and then, we will see frequent snow showers in northern scotland. this area of snowfall

in central and southern scotland, this could bring snow to quite low levels. for northern ireland and for northern england, at low levels, it may be that we see some rain and some sleet mixing in — most of the significant snow over high ground — but there could be some travel disruption, say, over the high—level routes in the pennines. to the south of that, well, mostly dry with some spells of crisp winter sunshine. maybe not quite as cold in southern counties of england or south wales, whereas parts of scotland will stay below freezing all day long. and in scotland, we'll see further snowfall during tuesday evening. it could cause some disruption for the rush hour. mix of rain, sleet, and snow across parts of northern england into wales. the odd snow shower pushing down across the midlands. a very, very cold night indeed, some places likely to get to —10 in the highlands. now for wednesday, we're keeping a close eye on this area of low pressure, which is moving its way in towards france, but it mayjust graze this weather system close enough to southern counties of england to bring the risk of a bit of light sleet and snow here. we'll keep an eye on that one for you. the channel islands

seeing rain, maybe something wintry mixing in. elsewhere, sunny spells, a scattering of wintry showers, a very cold—feeling day. many places around or, perhaps in some spots, below freezing even through the afternoon. now that weather system moves away. thursday will bring further snow showers. high pressure builds in for friday, so it is a drier end to the week for many. and then, we start to develop a westerly wind. atlantic weather systems will bring wind and rain, and something milder as we head into the weekend, so this cold spell may not last all that long.
