hello and welcome along to sports day. i'm sarah mulkearns. here's what's coming up on the programme — egypt twice come from behind to draw with ghana, but worries as captain mohamed salah is injured at afconjust six months after his move to saudi arabia. jordan henderson is officially confirmed as ajax's newest player. and britain's natasha jonas says she must beat mikaela meier to cement her legacy as one of the best pound for pound fighters. you're very welcome along the programme,
12:46 am
wherever you are watching around the world, we will start with the africa cup of nations where egypt and ghana played out a very entertaining two two draw in group b. there were three goals in five frantic second half minutes to level the tie after egypt had gone ahead at the end of the first half. enough for me, though. let's bring in our reporter, donna chacon, who was watching the game and can put more meat on the bones and put into context what that result means for these two teams are really a match that really came alive in the second half. yeah, it definitely did. sara a huge game, two massive names in african football and they both had a lot to play for after disappointing results in their opening matches, especially ghana, after they lost to cape verde manager chris hughton. manager chris hughton under a lot of pressure, we heard that there was an altercation
12:47 am
in the team hotel, a fan confronting him. but the good news for him was mohamed kudus was back and he is the undoubted star of this ghanaian side and his return was worth the wait. eventually, it was a bit of a slow burn of first half, but it all came together right at the end of the first half. mohamed salah going down, clutching his hamstring. bad news for egypt fans, terrible news for liverpool fans as well. and after he was substituted, he said he couldn't go on any longer. that's when mohammed kudus came to the fore. he scored a beautiful goal from around about 20 to 25 yards to open the scoring for ghana. and it looked like things were going really nicely for the black stars. but in the second half, everything sort of changed. egypt weren't very good in that opening 45 minutes, but they came right back into it. omar mahmoud got them back into the game, thanks to a mistake from inaki williams, could have then scored a second two minutes later. and just when it looked like ghana were then going to go on and take control of the match, back came egypt again. mustapha mohammed. so mohamed mustapha with the second equaliser to mean it finished two goals apiece. it's a result that probably does more for egypt
12:48 am
than it does for ghana. they are under pressure now. they've only got one point from their opening two games. they've got one game left to go against mozambique. but with curtis back in the side and on this kind of form, you wouldn't bet against them getting the result they need that will hopefully get them through into the last 16. brilliant stuff, dan. thank you very much for your time with us here on the programme. let's have a look at some of the other scores. then from thursday, emilio nsue scored a hat trick as equatorial guinea closed in on the knockout stages by thrashing guinea—bissau and nigeria. guinea—bissau and nigeria, they took a huge step towards reaching the last 16 with a one nil victory over hosts ivory coast in group a william troost—ekong saw scoring the only goal of that game from the penalty spot. today in nigeria, i tried. they put up a fight and they show that they come here for competition and that's looking good. now we have more confidence that we have before. we have a horse team in the competition. i think the best is coming in the in the next match,
12:49 am
but we are very discouraged. everybody is down. this is this is a mess, man. after the first cote d'ivoire match, we were scared. i they really played very well. but this time - we were just lucky. we are just so lucky. i was so happy about it. i'm so impressed. i'm very happy with the standard of the game and i'm happy african football is progressing. well onto the asian cup and australia are into the last 16 after beating syria one niljackson irvine scored the only goal of the game in the second half. so the victory means that the socceroos currently top group b. and uzbekistan are likely to join them in the knockout stages, with a three nil win for them against india. in group c, palestine kept their slim hopes of qualifying alive with their one one draw against the uae. now, after all the reports, it is official — england midfielder jordan henderson hasjoined in a permanent move,
12:50 am
bringing an end to his time with ashfaq in saudi arabia. henderson signed a three year contract with the saudi side when he left liverpool injuly, where he linked up with steven gerrard as the manager of the team. but after just 17 appearances for the saudi pro league side, he is heading back to europe. he's signed a two and a half year contract with the dutch team. well, despite henderson leaving, steven gerrard has signed a two year contract extension to stay as head coach until 2027. gerrard is reported to be one of the best paid managers in the world on a salary of around £15 million who finished seventh last term currently sit eighth in the table, 28 points behind the leaders. england women begin the defence of their six nations title in late march, but their first training squad of the year has been announced with bristol lock abby ward getting called up less than a year after giving birth to her daughter. head coachjohn mitchell has
12:51 am
included six uncapped players in the 38 strong squad and england captain marley parker has been speaking to the bbc about relishing the responsibility of wearing that captain's armband. i kind of look back at it now and yeah, an incredible year with, you know, loads of learnings and a lot of self—learning as well. being england captain, there's so much more to it thanjust, you know, being england captain. and i think, you know, as much credit as sarah hunt had got, i don't think she got as much credit for what she did do. and she just relentless in everything she did. and then for me to take over, it was a swift learning curve, but one that i definitely relished and loved every minute of it. and it's not changed me as a player on the pitch of anything it's made me better. probably engage my brain a little bit more and just, you know, what i do is now even more important to what the rest of the squad
12:52 am
or other players look up to. i've got a great leadership group around me and i can pull on them when i need them. but the, a lot of it comes down to then i have the last say on some stuff and just getting used to that. that is the now the new role and actually how we discuss things, work things out but the but lays with me on on most of it. boxing now and natasha jonas says she must beat mikaela mayer on saturday in liverpool, but that it will be a huge test for her. jonas will defend her ibf welterweight title against the former unified super featherweight champion mayer, who is considered to be amongst the world's best. well, this match up has generated a lot of interest, principally because they are so evenly matched on paper. both had solid amateur careers, both former olympians and both have won world titles in the professional ranks. natasha jonas is actually a two way to world champion.
12:53 am
she moved up three weight classes to win her first world titles back in 2022 and has moved back down to the welterweight division, principally because there are more opportunities here, more bigger names here. and she says that her goal is to go down as one of the best pound for pound in the world when she retires on saturday night in the arena. the majority of the crowd that will be there to see her win. of course, expectation brings pressure and she says that's something that she embraces. it's huge for me as an athlete and myjourney that have been on, but also the young girls that are coming behind me that can now see that there's a pathway in boxing for them too, i think to be celebrated and recognised that by the community that helped raise and shape me into the woman i've become. it's also a very big honourfor me. she's moving up a weight class, an accomplished boxer like yourself, both in the amateurs and as a professional. just how much of a test is she going to pose for you? she's a big test. that's why i chose her. you know, i'm near at the end of my career. i want to give myself some big challenges. i want to be able to say
12:54 am
when i've hung up the gloves, that i was one of the best in this era. and to do that, you've got to be in people on top £10 for pound list. and mikayla myers, one of the names on it. well, that's mikaela mayer. she's no stranger to boxing here in the uk. this will be our fourth fight in a row fighting here in england. it's the first time fighting in the welterweight division. she used to be a super featherweight. that's why she held her world titles until she lost it back in 2022. it's also the first time she's going to be facing a southpaw, a left hander, and it can be notoriously quite difficult. the adjustment, it's not an easy one to make, but she remains confident that she has all the tools to get the job done. luckily, i have a little bit of a fan base here. i think i'll need it going into the fight saturday because i know this is her hometown. i know they go hard for their people here, so i don't expect the fans to be cheering my name. but it's really important for me because i have to win this fight if i want to go on to have the career that i've always envisioned myself having. i've had a little bit of a setback this last year, having lost my belt, but this is a new chance for me.
12:55 am
i moved up in weight. i feel good, i feel strong. and now getting this belt from natasha jonas will put me right back in position where i want to be. this is a big name for me. i want to have this name on my resume. i want to beat her on saturday night and then i want to go on and challenge the other great names at welterweight. but this fights is really split opinions. but the odds—makers have natasha jonas as the slight favourite to win. there is a rematch clause in the contract, though, that if she doesn't get thejob done on saturday night, she will get the opportunity to face michaela again. but she told me that her goal is to win and win emphatically and then move on to the next challenges in her career. eddie adedoyin there. well, just before we go, time to recap. our top story is egypt came back twice from behind. they drew 2—2 with ghana at the africa cup of nations. however, star striker and the egypt captain and liverpool's mohamed salah did leave the field injured just before half time. plenty more on that and all the day's stories on the bbc sport website and app. for me and the rest of the team.
12:56 am
we'll see you again soon. bye— bye. hello. the cold wintry snap continued on thursday with more snow that's been accumulating across parts of northern scotland also northern ireland around some exposed coast of england and wales as well. this was the picture in highland. we've got several centimetres even right down to sea level, up to a0 centimetres over the higher ground. now, still a cold day to come on friday with some more snow. but milder, windier and wetter weather arrives as we head through the course of the weekend. overnight snow continuing to pile in across northern and western scotland in particular. few showers, perhaps northern ireland, northwest england. so some slippery conditions as we start the day on friday around some western areas in particular. temperatures, i think at six in the morning, around about minus to minus three for many of us, a little bit milder, perhaps under the cloud cover across parts of western
12:57 am
scotland with the breeze picking up, too. we're going to continue to see snow across scotland, but it'll mainly be over the higher ground because later in the day at lower levels, that is going to turn back to rain showers as that slightly milder air moves in. for much of northern ireland, england and wales, mist and fog clear away through the day to leave some sunshine and temperatures will be at that a little bit less cold than recent days. so we're looking at highs between around about 4—6 degrees friday afternoon for most of us. and then as we move through into the weekend, we've got this area of high pressure which then moves its way out towards the south—east and that opens the doors for atlantic weather fronts to move their way in. so bringing some rain, some wind and some milder air, you can see the yellow and orange colours returning to the map as that arctic air gets squeezed away towards the east. so for saturday, some fairly heavy rain across parts of england and wales, particularly further north you are, but the south and east should stay mostly dry. could be some more rain across parts of scotland and northern ireland as well
12:58 am
later on in the day. just went to rio for the highest peaks but i think for most it will be falling as rain. still relatively cool in the south and the east, six or seven, but double figures further west. into sunday the next frontal system moves in. so it's really this central swathe of the british isles that are going to be particularly wet. windy i think wherever you are on sunday. gales around exposed coasts and hills too. temperatures in the low teens possibly for some of us in the south. single figures further north. the outlook for the course of next week is for the much milder weather to return but then it will also be windy and often unsettled too. bye— bye.
