now on bbc news, sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm hugh ferris. the headlines this evening: britain's last man — but standing strong. one of cameron norrie's best ever grand slam wins takes him to the australian open's second week. he's back. ivan toney scores in his first match after serving an eight—month ban for breaching betting rules. what winter sun can do for you. fresh from a trip to dubai, arsenal have their first win a month. while palace are plummeting. the spartans broken by hearts
7:32 pm
in the scottish cup —but not without a goal to remember also coming up on sportsday: a magical day for lewis lynagh as he comes off the bench to score a try of the year contender for harlequins in the champions cup. two out of two. both the women and men secure a place for great britain in the olympic hockey tournament. hello again. he's flying the flag alone for britain in the singles, but cameron norrie is through to the fourth round of the australian open for the first time in his career. the british number one had never beaten a player ranked as high as casper ruud at a grand slam before... but he dispatched the 11th seed to
7:33 pm
reach the second week in melbourne. mike bushell has the details. the biggest grand slam challenger cameron norris* career, and he was in for a rude awakening. the british number one seed was determined to change the record. an early break to take the first set. the norwegian showed why he is the number 11, seizing his chance in a second set tie—break to level the match, which was then in the balance throughout the third, until norrie*s attacking approach finally paid off, stretching ruud to breaking point. with the bit between his teeth, norrie kept up his momentum again. he pushed home his advantage to take the force in the match, and keep the british flag flying in the singles. so good. i was really enjoying it from start to finish, i really felt a sense of calm throughout the whole match, and i embrace the atmosphere, and everyone was enjoying
7:34 pm
themselves. in terms of performances it was up there was one of my best, i think, in a grand slam. a first victory against this highly ranked opponent, and with plenty of support he will now have the quarterfinals in his sights next. cameron norrie providing one of the results of day seven at the australian open. but it*s the defeat of the women*s number one seed iga swiatek that has dominated the headlines in melbourne. i spoke to our tennis correspondent russell fuller about that and how norrie managed to claim one of the biggest wins of his grand slam career. it felt very significant, not just because it is in the australian open fourth round for the first time in his career, because of the way he played and the style he played. much of 2023 compared to his very successful period before that was disappointing for norrie, and he actually took a complete break, very unusual for him,
7:35 pm
for the davis cup finals. just try to forget about the sport for a week or ten days, i think that was refreshing. having lost to casper ruud on three occasions, he thought he needed to do something a bit different. he was very aggressive, came forward to the net far more than you usually see norrie do, and he executed all of that perfectly. the game plan was carried off to a tee, and to win in four sets, let*s remember, the set he did lose he had to set points in, was a magnificent performance, now he will have to also turn a very poor head—to—head record on its head in the fourth round, because his four previous meetings he has lost all of those. he is responsible for a growing list of seeds, top seeds, even though he is one himself, of going out for the australian open in this first week, but none more significant than the women*s number one, because she is still looking for a melbourne title.
7:36 pm
yes, the seeds that have fallen are quite staggering. although it has happened quite a few times in the last few years. having gone past to establish american players, a former australian open champion, and a runner—up in the first two rounds, the challenge was never going to be underestimated, but perhaps a surprise that it is the 19—year—old who is able to play with so much composure to beat the world number one. iga swiatek really prepared as much as she could have done, she was unbeaten in 18 matches stretching through from the end of last season, she said she had a more calm, more organised, more peaceful season, she was playing for poland, but she*s had some very tough match is this week, and it leaves the women*s draw now not completely wide—open,
7:37 pm
but there are plenty of others now who are sensing an unlikely title. so unbeaten since september until today. and the world number one was searching for reasons as to why another tilt at the title in melbourne has ended in failure. some thingsjust didn*t work as they did before, even though i was working the same way, and ifeel like i did really everything i could in preseason to improve some stuff i wanted to, and then i came here and i wasn*t playing kind of natural any more. i'm just really kind of exhausted, mentally and physically, but i think it was an unbelievable match for me. playing for the first time, and playing with iga for the first
7:38 pm
time, i'm just so glad. so swiatek is out. but she*s not the only one. just today the women*s number one and casper ruud were among seven seeds beaten by lower... or unseeded players. the remaining five included the likes of grigor dimitrov, tommy paul, and jelena ostapenko all out. there are others who survived. third seed daniil medvedev is through, as is carlos alcaraz. ranked one place higher. he led china*s 18—year—old shang juncheng by two sets when his opponent retired with injury. it*s the first time 20—year—old alcaraz had played an opponent younger than him at tour level. you*ll remember he missed last year*s australian open with a leg injury. but is one of the favourites this year to challenge novak djokovic for the title. every match that i*m playing, i am feeling better and better.
7:39 pm
moving, hitting the ball and, of course, i*m getting used to this cold, as well, i didn*t play so much in this cold, so everything is good, and taking good things from the cold, from the level i*m playing, and hopefully it*s going to be better and better. ivan toney had today*s game circled in the calendar for 8 months, and on his return to the brentford team following a ban for breaching fa gambling regulations, the striker made an almost instant impact. brentford had fallen behind early on but toney converted this free kick to bring the scores level. ben mee then turned the game around in the second half after finding space to attack in the area and put his side in front. chris wood did briefly bring the visitors level, heading home a cross from the left, but neal maupay would have the final say in this one — a superb touch and finish securing
7:40 pm
all three points and ending a run of seven defeats in their last eight league games. the result moves brentford up to 14th, whilst forest drop to 16th. arsenal have gone back up to third in the premier league after a 5—0 win over crystal palace that stops their recent slide... and continues their opponents* plummet towards a relegation battle. patrick gearey reports. this was also*s relaunch. back home after a dodgy december in ten days in dubai. ten minutes in, starting a cement to go on. later in half they aimed for gabriel again. 2-0. crystal palace unhappy, their players with the ref, some of their fans of the manager. roy hodgson*s position has been questioned. in the second half they had to seek adventure, but that left them vulnerable. arsenal excel in this place,
7:41 pm
palace rarely featured, the odd shot, but mostly disgruntled bystanders asking for directions. arsenal kept on running behind them. the force was slipped in in stoppage time. believe it or not, this isn*t a replay, but instead the fifth. one man*s restart might be another*s ending. so these are difficult times for palace. only one win in 12 matches in all competitions, and today*s defeat leaves them just 5 points above the relegation zone. their manager is all too aware that their fans are frustrated. i think we*re in charge of their opinion, and i think there are frustrated, disappointed, the probably accurate as well, we haven*t done as well as they would have liked us to do, so one understands that. you must never really start complaining about your supporters, especially the crystal palace was, because they are the ones who been through many a difficult situation
7:42 pm
and helped us to survive at moments when maybe survival looked very, very difficult. very pleased with the performance, a clean sheet to win the game. i had a good feeling as soon as we left the stadium after liverpool, and the performances were there. the results weren't, but it was a really good performance. we used moments of the game that we knew we could exploit really, really well. you need everybody really focused and determined to have an impact in the game and i'm really pleased. there might be a paucity of premiership action because of the winter break, but also plenty of games. southampton are up to second place in the championship after winning 3—1 at swansea. the former club of their manager russell martin. the victory sets a new club record of 21 games unbeaten. the previous one had stood for 102 years. flynn downes scored their third
7:43 pm
of the game just before half time for a win that puts southampton above ipswich on goal difference. at least until they play leaders leicester on monday. hearts were playing in an edinburgh derby today — but not the one they*re used to. a trip to fourth tier the spartans in the scottish cup fourth round proved to be a challenge nonetheless. the premiership side needing an injury time winner... as alex flethcer reports. in terms of geography, these two sides are neighbours, but on the pitch they are world parts. a year ago, spartans were facing heart treatment hearts*s b team. a tough test got even harder when hearts got an early lead. craig gordon*s goal was a further boost. his reflexes remaining shop, despite his time on the sidelines. the spartans were beginning to find their rhythm.
7:44 pm
their pursuit of an equaliser stepped up after the break, and something special brought them back on level terms. back to the edge of the box, what a hit that is! jamie craigen with the sweetest of strikes. gordon this time with no chance. but this fairy tale would not have a happy ending, frankie kent proving to be the villain of the piece, rising to decide the game in stoppage time. spartans heartbroken. of course i have been a lifelong jambo, so it was good to get out there against and play. obviously it was a tough game, it was going to be tough, butjust to stay in the game it was a great achievement. just enjoying the game, to be fair. that was the main priority, just to enjoy the occasion, and if we get a goal, great, but managed to get closer than we could have, it*s just unfortunate.
7:45 pm
we controlled the game but they had their moments, as well. we knew they was going to be dangerous from set pieces, and they were, you see that. i mean, what role that was. it was unreal, wasn*t it?! i know. i turned round, i was like, wow! so... you are properly panicking at that stage! yeah, i know, obviously, of course, the nerves get in once that goes in, but like i said, we stuck to it, and thankfully we got the goal in the end. well, where the spartans failed, others succeeded. aidrieonians of league one knocked out premiership side stjohnstone with a 1—0 win. falkirk haven*t lost a league game all season, but the league one leaders were beaten by bonnyrigg rose of the division below. the other shock of the day came at ross county. the team second from bottom of the premiership comfortably beaten at home by partick thistle. the team they beat to retain top flight status last season. the championship side through to the last 16 of the cup. rangers avoided an upset at dumbarton of league two, running out comfortable four one winners. john lundstram opened the scoring before cyriel dessers made it two

after getting on the end of a cross from james tavernier. scott wright sealed the win late on to send phillpe clement*s side into the last 16. just one match in the women*s super league today and arsenal kept up their pursuit of leaders chelsea with a 2—1 win over everton. goals from caitlin foord and beth mead proved enough for the victory. arsenal are now level on points with their london rivals although they have played a game more. chelsea host manchester united in one of four games tomorrow algeria*s wait for a first win at the africa cup of nations since they lifted the trophy in 2019 goes on. although they did rescue a point with an injury time equaliser against burkina faso in their second group game of this year*s tournament in ivory coast. burkina faso were ahead twice, including through mohamed konate*s header that opened the scoring at the end of the first half. initially given offside, the deicsion was reversed after a var review. each time algeria*s equaliser came from baghdad bounedjah, with his own header coming

hello. storm isha looks to be one of the strongest storms of the 23/24 season. it is likely to lead to transport disruption as well as probably damaged power networks. here is the rapidly deepening area of low pressure travelling beneath a powerful atlantic jet stream, and it*s this combination that rapidly strengthens this area of low pressure. severe gales will be widespread, and so will a threat of disruption. we*ll take a look at that in a bit more detail injust a moment. but first of all, this night, a band of rain pushes eastwards, follows by showers. the south—westerly winds bringing us relatively mild air. 4 to 7 degrees celsius, so nowhere near as cold a night as it was for many of the nights that we had last week. a mild start then to sunday, sunshine to start the day in northern and eastern scotland and across most of england and wales. northern ireland sees outbreaks of rain turning heavy quickly and this wet and windy weather will then spread its way northwards and eastwards. the south—southwesterly winds bringing very mild air. the mild air will set off a thaw of the lying snow,
7:58 pm
which combined with the heavy rain, could bring some concerns with the localised flooding. however, it*s the strength of the winds sunday evening, sunday night and into the early hours of monday morning that are cause for concern. storm isha will bring gusts of wind of around 60 to 70 miles an hour quite widely across western areas, maybe 80 miles an hour for northwest wales and perhaps parts of northern ireland. but the strongest winds will be going across scotland, where we could see gusts reaching 85 miles an hour across the north and west, maybe even a little bit stronger than that. now, the amber warning in scotland for storm isha is in the highest impact column weather—wise. if the likelihood or confidence grows, then we may well see a red weather warning follow. so, in other words, stay in touch with the latest forecasts because there could be updates to the weather warnings as we go through sunday. it then gets very windy for a time sunday night across parts of the coast of southeast england, that will likely disrupt the ferries. and then from monday, we*re looking at a very blustery day. the strong winds very slow to ease down. a day of sunshine and
7:59 pm
heavy thundery showers. some of the showers turning to snow across the high scottish mountains. it will feel a colder kind of day with temperatures ranging between eight and 11 degrees celsius. it then looks like we*ll see more rain come our way for tuesday. wednesday, drier and sunnier. in the short term, though, please pay attention to the warnings for storm isha. live from london.
