began, according to the hamas—run health ministry in gaza. the us blames iranian—backed militants in iraq for a ballistic missile strike on an airbase used by american troops. widespread warnings in place across the uk as storm isha is forecast to bring rain and wind of up to 80mph. and the fifa president calls for stadium bans forfans and automatic forfeits for teams whose supporters shout racist abuse. hello. i'm lewis vaughan jones. welcome to the programme. we are going to go straight to gaza.
1:01 pm
this is the scene at the moment on the israel/gaza border. you can see the smoke in the sky. the numbers released by the health ministry in gaza show that for the first time, more than 25,000 palestinians are said to have been killed in the fighting since the 7th of october. the specific number, 25,105. i also say more than 62,000 people have been injured. these figures from the health ministry in gaza run by hamas. israel in the past has questioned those statistics, those numbers released by hamas. hamas of course described as a terrorist organisation by many western countries. the other developing news in the last hour also comes from israel's border with lebanon. we have had details from the reuters news agency, and these
1:02 pm
are pictures from the area. there have been two people killed in that southern border area. the details according to security sources speaking to the reuters news agency saying that two hezbollah fighters were killed in a direct strike on a vehicle, on a car in southern lebanon. reuters quoting as i said security sources, not independently verified by the bbc, but saying that several others were injured too in a suspected israeli drone strike on sunday that targeted a car in southern lebanon. ambulances reportedly rushing to the scene near a lebanese army checkpoint, and it is not clear who was targeted in the strike, saying security sources speaking to reuters initially, but they reported later that two hezbollah fighters were hit in that direct strike on a car.

know we are going to head to iraq and get the latest on that attack on and get the latest on that attack on an air base used by the united states. the us says iranians backed militants were behind the attack. multiple rockets were fired and someone intercepted. this is the al—asad base in iraq there, at least one iraqi service member wounded and american soldiers being assessed for brain injuries. attacks on forces linked to iran have increased since the israel gaza war started. in this latest incident was just hours after this. this is an air strike in syria, the capital, damascus. iranians were killed here, and iran said this wouldn't go unanswered, and the president of iran blamed israel for this, and the president of iran blamed israel forthis, but and the president of iran blamed israel for this, but israel hasn't commented on that. let's go to israel now. more comments from prime minister benjamin netanyahu. he said again israel should retain
1:04 pm
security control over all the palestinian territories — that's gaza and the west bank. he said this condition was "contrary" to a future palestinian state being established. his comments on saturday defied pressure from the us and others to commit to a two—state solution. the uk defence secretary, grant shapps, was asked about mr netanyahu's comments rejecting the idea of a palestinian state. he's been speaking to my colleague laura kuennsberg. i think it's very disappointing that benjamin netanyahu has said that. it's not in some senses a surprise, he's spent his entire political career against a two—state solution. but the point is, which other route is there to seriously resolve this? palestinians deserve a sovereign state. israel deserves to have the ability to defend itself, its own security, in other words. and unless you pursue a two—state solution, i really don't see that there is another solution. now, you will get a lot of different views within the israeli
1:05 pm
government, of course. it is a rainbow coalition. so we very much distinguish between the views of individuals and our overall support for israel as a country. let's go live to our correspondent mark lohan injerusalem. what has been the response? mark lohan in jerusalem. what has been the response?— been the response? ben'amin netanyahu i been the response? ben'amin netanyahu hopes * been the response? ben'amin netanyahu hopes that h been the response? benjamin netanyahu hopes that his - netanyahu hopes that his long—standing opposition to a palestinian state chimes with the majority of public opinion at the moment, that is still too traumatised to countenance an independent palestine after those attacks on the 7th of october, and of course he is also fighting for his political survival to some extent, with diminishing popularity here, and relying on support from the far right within his cabinet, two ministers threatening to topple
1:06 pm
the government to israel pursues its war, and they are very much aligned with him on the anti—palestinian statehood position. there is growing exasperation clearly from western allies at the moment, and the fact that benjamin netanyahu keeps repeating this publicly in a pretty clear rebuttal to israel's western allies who are pressuring him to ease off on the offensive and engage in meaningful diplomacy. thatjust in meaningful diplomacy. that just shows in meaningful diplomacy. thatjust shows the widening chasm there is between the netanyahu government and israel's western allies, and that is likely to continue as mr netanyahu put fights for his political survival. put fights for his political survival-— put fights for his political survival. * . , ., , ., survival. and what is the latest on the ground _ survival. and what is the latest on the ground in _ survival. and what is the latest on the ground in gaza? _ survival. and what is the latest on the ground in gaza? well, - survival. and what is the latest on the ground in gaza? well, the - survival. and what is the latest on l the ground in gaza? well, the focus ofthe the ground in gaza? well, the focus of the fighting _ the ground in gaza? well, the focus of the fighting still— the ground in gaza? well, the focus of the fighting still very _ the ground in gaza? well, the focus of the fighting still very much - the ground in gaza? well, the focus of the fighting still very much in - of the fighting still very much in the south around khan younis, in the south of gaza, where israel believes that top hamas officials are holed up that top hamas officials are holed up either in the city or beneath the city and tunnels, and the israelis
1:07 pm
have released new footage of a tunnel at they say they found in khan younis, 830 metres long with blast doors, mattresses, cells inside that tunnel that they believe are being used to hold around 20 israeli hostages at different times in this conflict. but there have also been clashes in northern gaza as well around jabalia where there have been reports that palestinian fighters try to use the opportunity of israel moving troops and tanks further south in order to launch renewed clashes. we are almost three months into the israeli ground invasion, and israel is vastly superior to hamas in terms of the size and strength of its army, its equipment, yet it is still continuing to face significant resistance right across this territory, and there are reports coming out from us intelligence quoted in some media saying that the us now believes that israel has only achieved 20 to 30% of its war aims so far, more than three months on since the beginning of this offensive, and then of course no
1:08 pm
senior very top hamas official has been killed or captured yet, and all of that is beginning to sort of feed a growing frustration and unease here in israel that the offensive is not going to go to plan, and of course at the same time there are still about 130 hostages that have not come back, and it is unknown how many of those have died.— many of those have died. mark, thank ou for many of those have died. mark, thank you for that- — you for that. officials in the russian —controlled officials in the russian —controlled city of donetsk in eastern ukraine say 25 people have killed in an attack on a market. authorities there claim ukrainian forces shelled there claim ukrainian forces shelled the area when it was at its busiest. kyiv has not commented. here in the uk, a new storm, storm isha, is hitting the country. two amber wind warnings will be in place until monday morning, covering most of the uk. winds up to 80 mph are
1:09 pm
expected. nine flood warnings already in place across england. 0ur weather presenter matt taylor joined me with an update on how storm isha is progressing. at the moment it is out in the atlantic. i will show you the satellite imagery. you will see a clump of cloud which started in the us, it brought a lot of heavy snowfall to the north—east united states, but it is now approaching us in the uk and ireland, which will be hit by strong rain and winds rather than snow, it will approach today. so that is when it will hit and where it is. what is the likely timeframe as it comes across the uk? most of the uk is going to see rain develop during the rest of today, coupled with snowmelt, we have had a lot of snow recently, there could be flooding around. you can see the area of low pressure, it is deepening past the north of scotland. the peak winds in the uk will be through tonight and into the early hours of monday morning, so it will be a night feature which is good news in some respects, they will not be as many people on the roads. unlike the storms we saw over christmas, this one, the strong winds will be felt quite widely. 50 or 60 miles an hour
1:10 pm
across the whole uk. but for some, particularly across parts of the north and west, where the met office have and the weather warnings in place, these are the areas that are most likely to feel the impact where we could see winds up to 80 miles an hour. in western scotland beyond midnight, we could see winds above 90 miles an hour which could have a big impact on what we will see through tomorrow. in terms of the impact, when you get wind speeds up to that speed, what are we looking at in terms of potential damage or travel disruption? in the areas marked with the amber warnings are the ones at greatest risk of storm damage. some structural damage. we have the potential for power cuts, there could be problems with mobile phone signals if masts come down. and the added flooding, the rain with the snowmelt on top of it, and into the morning with all of that around, a busy monday morning rush hour, we could see some travel problems just about anywhere across the uk. probably worse felt across parts of scotland, which could experience
1:11 pm
the strongest of the winds through the night. we have had it for a while, but the naming of storms, this is storm isha, how does that come about, how does that name come about? three meteorological agencies, irish, dutch and uk come together, they set out an a to z of names, male and female. and it's up to each office, they think there will be a storm which will impact their neck of the woods, they give it a name. thank you. esyllt carr has more on the latest on the disruption from storm isha so far. as britain prepares for storm isha, some of the destruction has already started. train companies are already warning passengers to expect disruption today. that is particularly on services later on and this evening. as the wind picks up, speed restrictions are likely to put in place.
1:12 pm
avanti west coast has gone as far as to tell its passengers not to travel at all today if they can avoid it because of the changes it has had to make to its timetable. some services in scotland will be ending earlier this evening, and southeastern trains will cancel tomorrow's early morning trains in and out of london to give a chance to clear any debris of the tracks. ferry services are also facing difficulties, several sailings across the irish sea have already been cancelled, and there is disruption on services between newcastle and amsterdam. if you are flying, you should also stay across development. british airways has had to cancel flights, and it says along with other airlines it has had to make adjustments to its schedule. gatwick and heathrow are not reporting any particular disruption at the moment, but of course it's airlines that control the flights themselves. the company behind glasgow, aberdeen and southampton airports is warning passengers
1:13 pm
to check with their airlines if they are planning to fly in these difficult conditions. for drivers, the advice is also to take care. the highways authorities in all four uk nations are putting out warnings for drivers, especially for later this evening when the high winds could pose particular risks to hgvs and also to vehicles like caravans and motorbikes. as we heard from matt, the conditions are expected to worsen later this evening, and a lot will depend on whereabouts in the uk you are, but the advice for anyone travelling today is to check the conditions before you set off. thanks to esyllt for that. let's ta ke thanks to esyllt for that. let's take a look at what is happening. we're keeping across the weather for you, with live picture across the uk. let's show you these live pictures from the shetland islands off the coast of scotland. 80 mph winds expected. the unusual thing about this storm is that most of the uk is expected to be effected
1:14 pm
at pretty much the same time, and we do have our cameras out and about across the country as the storm intensifies and hits the uk. we have all that for you. let's have a quick look at heathrow airport. we have been monitoring flights coming into land over the last couple of hours, and there has been a bit of wobbling as planes come in to land, but this one looking pretty stable, the last few to be honest have looked pretty stable and good too, about 30 minutes. there is a bit of wobble. in the last 30 minutes to an hour, we have seen landings being a little more tricky and a little more delicate coming into heathrow airport, but everything looking pretty good there right now. now it's time for a look at today's sport with hugh ferris. hello from the bbc sport centre. it would appear novak djokovic is reaching top gear at the australian open. the top seed and defending champion dropped just three

games as he thrashed frenchman adrian mannarino to make the quarterfinals in melbourne. the world number one is chasing an 11th austrlaian open title, which would also take him clear of margaret court's all—time record number of 2a grand slam vicotries. but he started the tournament battling illness, following two tough matches, and only gave up those games in the third set, winning 6—0 6—0 6—3. djokovic is through to a record—equalling 58th grand slam quarter final. i always look for the best performance for myself, so i put a lot of effort every single day into making it happen, and when it doesn't happen, i'm frustrated. so it is still there, the fire is still burning, and i think that is what allowed me to be where i am and achieve the things that i have achieved. djokovic will face taylor fritz in the last eight, with the american beating last year's finalist
1:16 pm
stefanos tsitsipas to reach his first australian open quarterfinal. djokovic has won all eight of their previous matches, including a straight—sets victory at the same stage in last year's us open. coco gauff says she often forgets she's still a teenager after becoming the youngest woman to reach the australian open singles quarterfinals since 2008. the 19—year—old american booked her spot in the last eight by sweeping past poland's magdalena frech in straight sets. now in herfinal major tournament as a teenager, she is the second favourite to win behind second seed aryna sabalenka. fifa president gianni infantino has called for the implementation of an automatic forfeit of games for teams whose fans commit racist abuse. it follows incidents which he described as "totally abhorrent" at udinese and sheffield wednesday on saturday. ac milan's win in udine was briefly suspended after alleged racist abuse from home fans towards milan goalkeeper mike maignan. coventry city's kasey palmer said
1:17 pm
he received similar abuse at hillsborough in a match in england's championship the milan keeper has released a statement on social media saying it isn't the first time that it does happen to him and he is in the first to receive such abuse. he called for the entire system to take responsibility, also thanking his club, ac milan, andy for the support. in cricket, england have announced that dan lawrence will replace their missing player. in the nfl, both number one seeds made their respective championship games after divisoinal round playoff wins. lamarjackson and the baltimore ravens beat the houston texans 34—10 in the afc, while the san francisco 49ers followed suit in the nfc after coming through a close game against the green bay packers.
1:18 pm
the 49ers were 21—14 down in the third quarter, but quarterback brock purdy led a game—winning drive which took his team to a 24—21 victory and to within one win of the super bowl. very proud of the guys. i think that was as big of a mental challenge, and just a character that they have been a part of, and when things aren't going how you want on all things defence, the rain, guys slipping a lot, having to change some things with that, and just some of the mistakes we made an overcome, it was a gut check for everybody, and i couldn't be more proud of the people in their and how they persevere. the 49ers will play either the detroit lions or tampa bay buccanners, while awaiting the ravens will be the winners of the game in buffalo between the bills and kansas city chiefs. you can stay across those on the bbc sport website. there's plenty of football to stay across today, including the asian cup
1:19 pm
and the africa cup of nations, also on the website, but that's all the sport for now. thank you, hugh. more now on the claims of racist abuse in the italian serie a match. the fifa president has called for an automatic forfeit of games the teams whose fans commit racist abuse. italian football journalist daniele verri told me more about what happened during the match. the game was suspended as you said for about five minutes due to racist abuse towards ac milan and the goalkeeper, and then it was resumed towards the end of the game, and unfortunately this is not the first time that this outburst to him in

person, to mike maignan, this has already happened in 2021. i think it probably happens i would say week in, week out, in every football stadium, and racism is a cultural aspect that belongs to society in general, to the entire society, for sure. given that it does happen, what are some of the answers here? what about that call for points or games to be forfeited? ., that call for points or games to be forfeited? . , ., forfeited? there are rules at the moment that — forfeited? there are rules at the moment that can _ forfeited? there are rules at the moment that can apply - forfeited? there are rules at the moment that can apply in - forfeited? there are rules at the moment that can apply in italy. | moment that can apply in italy. there will be an investigation taking place for sure, there will be an investigation taking place forsure, in there will be an investigation taking place for sure, in order to identify those who have abused him,
1:21 pm
and extend them lifelong bans. as the rules foresee at the moment in italy, there can be a fine or one or two games played with that specific sector of the stadium closed, not the whole stadium because those chants and abuse came only from one specific sector. this is possible now, at the moment. 0bviously every time an event like this happens, the stakeholders like the italian football federation or the government expressed their unhappiness, so to say, against these things. and this has been happening several times in italy without much changing. maybe this is the time for the stakeholders to
1:22 pm
really change the rules and try to stop this. but it won't stop racism in my opinion as such. you might stop its expression in football stadiums, but racism is part of society, and it will remain there evenif society, and it will remain there even if this happens or not. i want to take you back to the storm thatis i want to take you back to the storm that is hitting the uk right now. these are live pictures of shetland in scotland. you can see the waves starting to build up. 80 mph winds are expected later. lots of warnings for rain as well. amber weather warnings for wind, much of england, wales, northern ireland from six o'clock tonight local time, yellow rain warnings also in place in most areas. so let's take you now to our

because there is so much water on the road, and with those really strong winds, it really whisks that water up and you can't say a lot, the trucks on the road were swaying about, so also warnings to motorists across the uk that are driving to be very wary of driving around lorries and trucks, because as we have seen in past storms, they can very easily topple over in these very strong winds, up to 80 mph in parts, so pretty much the whole of the uk. the worst of it comes in from around six tonight, it will be right through tonight, it will be right through tonight so we will really find out the worst of the damage in the morning. london and parts of the south—east are the only areas that are not looking like they're going to be affected, and they will be all across the country, flood warnings in place, so keep tuned in to the emergency services. and in place, so keep tuned in to the emergency services.— in place, so keep tuned in to the emergency services. and 'ust before i let ou emergency services. and 'ust before i let you go. — emergency services. and 'ust before i let you so not emergency services. and 'ust before i let you go, this is h emergency services. and 'ust before i let you go, this is quite h

hello. storm isha looks to be one of the strongest storms we have seen this season. there are widespread amber weather warnings covering the vast majority of the land across the uk. damaging winds are on the way, disruption is expected. storm isha is this area of cloud you can see it coming in to our shores, continuing to strengthen. the strongest winds are found on this hope you can see here, and within that zone, the wind is likely to gust to 90 mph. through the rest of this afternoon, the winds will pick up and we will see outbreaks of rain moving in widely. we are seeing a number of flood warnings increase in scotland and across england as well. it is during this evening, sunday night and into the early part of monday, that we will see those damaging gust of wind work in. the gusts could reach 80 across parts of northern and western wales, so they will be trees down
1:27 pm
from that and disruption, but the strongest winds are further north, 60-70 in strongest winds are further north, 60—70 in northern ireland, and the core of the strongest winds could affect the north of northern ireland, so 80 or 90 not out of the question, and similarfor northern and western scotland, but they will be impacts elsewhere. it is a case of may be power networks getting damaged, power cuts possible, and there will be transport disruption, and the impact from the store will still be being felt in to monday, although it will stay blessed to be all day, peak winds coming down and all day, peak winds coming down and a day of sunshine and heavy showers, some thundery, a bit of snow over the scottish mountains. a cooler feel to the weather across northern areas. we get rid of storm isha, but it will be followed up by another deep area of low pressure on tuesday, again bringing a zone of heavy rain and strong winds across the northern half of the country, reaching around 60 or 70 mph, but it is the rain that is probably because for more concern and we will see
1:28 pm
some further flooding issues building in, the bulk of the rain does clear through late in the day followed by blustery showers. temperatures 9—11 in the south, and a ridge of high pressure building in for wednesday. many of us will stay dry with sunshine, a bit of rain and drizzle going in, and again back to brighter weather.
