1:34 pm
welcome to sportsday. all british hopes in the singles at the australian open are over after cameron norrie fell short of the quarterfinals, beaten by sixth seed alexander zverev in a dramatic five—setter. after executing so well throughout the contest, in which norrie twice came from behind to force a decider, the british number one's game unravelled in the fifth set tie—break. a double—fault put zverev 6—2 ahead and the german used the momentum to seal a victory that ended british interest in the singles at melbourne park this year. zverev, still aiming for his first grand slam title, will face spanish second seed carlos alcaraz in the quarterfinals on wednesday.

0ur tennis correspondent russell fuller was watching the norrie match and gave us his thoughts afterwards. he continued, or at least try to continue to play, in the same way that he'd approach the match, especially insects four and five, which was be very aggressive, come forward to the net as often as he could liberal use of the drop shot by his standards, very approach —— similar to the approach when he beat the 11th seed in the third round. ultimately, when the stakes were at their highest, he made too many mistakes in the match tie—break. he had been serving very well enough that fifth set, daniel serif, making life difficult for cameron norrie. when you missed out by a grand slam quarterfinal by such a narrow margin it is a crushing defeat, but cameron norrie has said that he thinks the best is yet to come, this is a man

who has already reached a grand prime —— grand slam semifinal at wimbledon. at the age of 28 he looked his life and thought, how do i get even better, how do i improve? he thinks this more aggressive game style, taking more risks, coming forward is the answer. it is exciting to watch and it will be an exciting to watch and it will be an exciting year if he continues to play in that vein. exciting year if he continues to play in that vein. the quarterfinal draws are now complete after carlos alcaraz eased through his round of 16 match with a commanding display on rod laver arena. the wimbledon champion lostjust eight games on his way to beating miomir kecmanovic of serbia in straight sets. the spaniard missed last year's tournament through injury, but has dropped just one set on his way to the last eight. third seed daniil medvedev also booked his place in the quarterfinals, but he didn't have it all his own way. portugal's nuno borges took him to four sets in melbourne. the two—time finalist failed to convert two match points at 5—4 in the third set, before winning the fourth 6—1. the top six men's seeds

are all through to the last eight. it's a different story in the women's draw where ukrainian dayana yastremska has become the first qualifer to reach a grand slam quarterfinal since emma raducanu at the 2021 us 0pen. yastremska knocked out the two—time champion victoria azarenka 7—6, 6—4. it's the first time she has ever progressed past the last 16 of a major and she's done it while being ranked world number 93. yastremska will next face 19—year—old linda noskova, who booked her place in the quarterfinals because elina svitolina retired 3—0 down through injury. noskova knocked out the world number one, iga swiatek, in the previous round. like yastremska, it's her first time into a grand slam quarterfinal. i don't know exactly what it is, but

northern ireland, you need to be prepared for disruption on the railways. that has been a real problem for airline passengers and, my goodness, the sort of disruption we saw yesterday, i don't think we have seen for example a domestic flight going from edinburgh in scotland to bristol in the west of england diverting to paris. the big problem for lots of the passengers on this easyjet flight was they didn't have any passports, they thought they were flying within the uk, therefore they had to sleep in the transit lounge overnight and they are trying to get back to the uk today. we have many other people, tens of thousands of people out of position and there are more flight cancellations today, i'm afraid. still a lot of disruptions across the country. what is the advice for passengers who have to venture out.
