with nikki haley hampshire with nikki haley looking to slow donald trump is like momentum following his iowa caucus victory. the next the votes are being counted in the second republican presidential contest of 202a. and in washington dc, i'm caitriona perry. thank you so much forjoining us alive here in new hampshire. polls have officially closed, the vote is under way here in new hampshire as we await the winner of tonight public primary. the us media partner cbs news is currently characterising the race as the into trouble. hundreds of thousands of votes, including independence and unaffiliated, were eligible to cast ballots for the republican nominee.
1:01 am
early exit polls from our us partner cbs show self identified independents are making up about 45% of voters currently. in the iowa caucus, it is just 16% of voters are self identified as independent. i am alive in washington. since the iowa caucus, the field narrowed to just two macro candidates, donald trump and nikki haley. donald trump tonight wants to cement his position as the republican frontrunner, flooding your hips with campaign surrogates and a strong ground game. nikki haley has been narrowing the polling the in new hampshire and is hoping for a good showing herself. rebounding from her third place finish in the iowa caucus. , . , third place finish in the iowa caucus. , ., caucus. the primary today showed a _ caucus. the primary today showed a strong - caucus. the primary today showed a strong turnout l caucus. the primary today - showed a strong turnout among unaffiliated and moderate voters. let's go to gary donahue, in a polling place in manchester where a rating wrapped up in the last hour. we
1:02 am
have been talking about the strong turnout, tell us more about what you have seen there. we finished the voting here about an hour ago. they are continuing the process of making those figures official but i can tell you that in manchester, they had a round 3000, just under 3000 votes cast in which is about half of the registered electorate, around 50% of the registered electorate, which is an incredibly strong turnout for a primary election. i can tell you that the unofficial figures have donald trump in the republican primary key at around 54% with nikki haley at around 54% with nikki haley at around 37%. this is a tramp area, he won this area back in 2016, and he won by a bigger margin either needed state wide. you were expecting to do
1:03 am
well here but not out of sight in that sense. we will see what happens later on in some of those areas of the state where nikki haley is hoping to do strong on the coast and coastal towns and in the suburbs as well and we will see how things pan out. as stairs, he mentioned colleagues at cbs saying that donald trump is leading the race with just over 10% of the count so far. leading the race with just over 1096 of the count so far. those results are _ 1096 of the count so far. those results are trickling _ 1096 of the count so far. those results are trickling in. - 1096 of the count so far. those results are trickling in. i - results are trickling in. i want to ask you about those independent voters, those not registered as democrats or republicans who have cast their ballots. we have talked about how significant they are renewing him so. what can you tell us about the turnout there and what that might mean for the candidates was mike of course, the undeclared voters can choose to vote in the primary and a lot choose to vote into the republican primary. vote into the republican primary-— vote into the republican rima . . ., ., primary. that can have an effect on _ primary. that can have an effect on a _ primary. that can have an effect on a does - primary. that can have an effect on a does not - primary. that can have an | effect on a does not mean primary. that can have an - effect on a does not mean they will vote one way or the other

in the general election but they may want to take part. nikki haley has polled strongly among those, so if there is a strong turnout in their group in particular, that is probably good news for her. they tend to be more moderate voters, more urban voters, and if she has managed to galvanise them to a greater degree, if you like, then regular republican voters, then regular republican voters, then her campaign will be very happy with that position. we will have to see how close she gets. by definition, in a two horse race, it will be closer thanit horse race, it will be closer than it is in a five horse race. in many ways, she should be doing better but is a question of how much better than the polling show. if she can get, at the end of the night, within single digits of donald trump, that will be incredibly good performance for her give her a good deal of momentum. if it is double—digit or big double digits, they're not so much.—
1:05 am
or big double digits, they're not so much. you have been speaking _ not so much. you have been speaking to _ not so much. you have been speaking to voters, - not so much. you have been speaking to voters, what - not so much. you have been i speaking to voters, what have they been telling you through they been telling you through the course of today chris mack at depends who you speak to. if you talk to people who were supporters of donald trump, they like his strength. they like the fact he talks about immigration, they like the fact he talks about the economy. mainly they like the strong message he puts out, that is something you he time and time again. from the undeclared voters, it is a more complex message, notjust anti—donald message, not just anti—donald trump, message, notjust anti—donald trump, is about time for a change, concern about the age that he is, in the same way that he is, in the same way that democrats are concerned aboutjoe biden and his age, also a complex picture, if you like, moderates have a complex picture. how these things break down will be crucial and you have already seen donald trump running this argument about a
1:06 am
and independents being allowed to vote in the republican primary. he has done that in the run—up to this primary internal again this evening. that is getting your defence in early, if it turns out to be a bit closer than he would like. of course, registered democrats of course, registered democrats are not able to vote in the republican primary, that has been very clear. if you want to switch your registration from democrat to undeclared in order to vote in the republican primary, you had to do a bye last october.— last october. indeed, an important _ last october. indeed, an important point - last october. indeed, an important point you - last october. indeed, an l important point you make last october. indeed, an - important point you make there. thank you so much for the update. great to speak with you. we are getting more details from the new hampshire exit polls, aaron porter is going through them now. it is alwa s going through them now. it is always interesting _ going through them now. it 3 always interesting to take a look at these exit polls. they give us an idea as to the motivation that has been getting voters out. we can take
1:07 am
a look at some of the results on these interesting questions like what issues matter the most to. this is people who the republican primary. you can see immigration are topping that list. that is the same consolation we saw in the iowa caucuses over a week ago. you have to go down. you can see abortion, reproductive rights issues, such are coming to play. remember, something a key tenant of the democratic re—election campaign forjoe biden and kamala harris. 0n the question of whether voters consider thatjoe biden legitimately won the 2020 election, there you can see a direct even splits, 49% say and 49% say no, they do not believe thatjoe biden won the election legitimately. if you ever take a look at the results from iowa, what we saw was about two thirds of voters there saying
1:08 am
that they did not believe that he won that election legitimately, particularly among donald trump voters. another question, if donald trump were to be convicted, it is still fit to be president. 0nce is still fit to be president. once again, pretty even. 50% say yes, he is and 47% saying no, he is not. casting our minds back to iowa, what we saw there among voters, saying yes, he is to the extent of 80 points or higher. what you can see from these results, what they show what, new hampshire is different to iowa. in terms of more conservative policies, stronger support for donald trump. the question is will they send out bearing out in they send out bearing out in the polls, those results are starting to trickle in and we will be bringing them to you throughout the course of the evening. throughout the course of the evenina. ., ., throughout the course of the evenina. ., ~ ,, throughout the course of the evenina. ., ~' ,, throughout the course of the evenina. ., ~' . . evening. thank you so much. we will no evening. thank you so much. we will go live _ evening. thank you so much. we will go live to _ evening. thank you so much. we will go live to our _ evening. thank you so much. we will go live to our reporter - will go live to our reporter now standing outside of the

door, about an hour good to go, waiting to clear the security to get inside the event, we were speaking with some donald trump supporters who were excited. the mood was already anticipating a victory. it felt like a victory party in hampshire for donald trump was that many people coming from out of state, i talk with a couple of donald trump supporters who say they came from massachusetts to come here to make sure they could witness donald trump on election night. we are seeing our partner cbs news saying that this party is a leaning towards donald trump. we saw donald trump and he cast his ballot earlier, he also spoke to the media. tell us more about what we have heard from him today quiz mack this has been, in a way to do, already a victory lap. we're still waiting _ already a victory lap. we're still waiting to _

because we really obviously have seen the people come out, they care about the first in they care about the first in the nation primary and with the others, there are many other states wanting it to be there states wanting it to be there state and joe biden trying to take it away. it is nice to have something that is a horse race. something going here than it sounds like nikki haley is holding her own against donald trump. i was listening to the radio on the way he and someone said he will end up with 58 and she will end up with 60. another station. she will end up with 60. anotherstation. i she will end up with 60. another station. i thought that would be horrible. it sounds like our primary is working and independents are coming out. we have more independence we do, other republicans or democrats, and while some of the far—right at the far—left think it should be a closed primary, this is what we like to see.- what we like to see. this is what we like to see. this is wh we what we like to see. this is why we live _ what we like to see. this is why we live are _ what we like to see. this is why we live are open. - what we like to see. this is why we live are open. you | why we live are open. you want to see a close _ why we live are open. you want to see a close race _ why we live are open. you want to see a close race he? - why we live are open. you want to see a close race he? i - why we live are open. you want to see a close race he? i do, i l

the campaign a fundraising e—mail release, celebrating what they are calling a winner in new hampshire, a big win. also a post on truth social taking a dig at nikki haley say that she said she needed to win a new hampshire and that she did not. what donald trump will be watching very closely will be watching very closely will be the margin of victory here. he is hoping for a large one, double digit as big as he can build, because what his campaign really wants to do is wrap this nomination up as quickly as possible and as convincingly as possible. that would be a big part of it. we had from nikki haley, saying earlier during her speech that new hampshire is the first primary are not the last one but it does become difficult to continue when polling does not look good and you have a re—lost a couple of states by convincing margins. what we know is donald trump hopes to project his aura of

inevitability, he wants to be seen as the obvious frontrunner and obvious potential nominee for the republican party, not only because that is good for his campaign but good for him in a legal sense as well, there are four macro criminal indictments he is facing and he will have some court appearances in some trials. he will have to deal with those in 2024. it will make it easier for him if he nomination is wrapped up in his team can begin to focus solely on what is going on in the court room. what we have sensory is a jubilant mood here at the watch party and this will probably be a party that goes on for a couple of more hours, plenty to celebrate its arrival donald trump. i celebrate its arrival donald trum - . ., celebrate its arrival donald trum - . . ., celebrate its arrival donald trum -. . ., , trump. i imagine that is certainly _ trump. i imagine that is certainly the _ trump. i imagine that is certainly the case - trump. i imagine that is certainly the case the. l trump. i imagine that is i certainly the case the. you have been speaking to some of the folks who have come out for the folks who have come out for the watch party, also supporters of the former president who have cast their ballots across to have today. tell us what they have been telling you?— tell us what they have been telling you? tell us what they have been tellin: ou? ~ , , .,~ ., telling you? when you speak to

exit polls showed the economy is the number one issue for voters in new hampshire tonight. on paper — the us economy is performing very well, despite inflation hitting 40—year highs in 2022. fast forward to today — where we are seeing wall street shatter records. the s&p 500, which tracks share prices of america's biggest companies closed last week at an all—time high. us unemployment numbers are also encouraging. a recent report from the bureau of labor statistics show the current unemployment rate at 3.7 percent. last month also saw 216,000 jobs added to the workforce. and consumer sentiment surged to its highest level in 2.5 years, coming in at 78.8 — that's a big jump from just last month, where the index came in at 69.7. that's according to a report from the university of michigan. it's a reflection of the improving mood of buyers across all ages, income groups, education levels and political affiliations. but despite all this, inflation, the growing cost of everyday

past trump. they tend to be independent, unaffiliated and couege independent, unaffiliated and college educated voters and new hampshire is the largest block and this year she managed to pick up almost all the independent voters because there is no democratic primary in new hampshire so the only game in town is 4—1 split of whether independent voters are going. they are voting into the republican primary because they do not like a trump so you are seeing the negative partisanship, about 40% of independent voters combined with some of the republicans who would prefer haley to trump this is the worst state trump is going to do in the primary. this is his low point. there is no path for nikki haley out of new hampshire.— no path for nikki haley out of new hampshire. they are saying this is not over _ new hampshire. they are saying this is not over but _ new hampshire. they are saying this is not over but i _ new hampshire. they are saying this is not over but i want - new hampshire. they are saying this is not over but i want to - this is not over but i want to ask about libertarian voters. which candidate seems to

out of this primary note in new hampshire. you have the state set with a rematch between biden and trump and where do they fall? do they go to a libertarian party nominee or go for biden when they voted heavily for biden in 2020. it heavily for biden in 2020. it is unknown. you have said a biden— trump match—up would leave a lot of space for a libertarian candidate, why? the count is libertarian candidate, why? tie: country is familiar libertarian candidate, why? tte: country is familiar for libertarian candidate, why? tt9 country is familiar for both of these options and they are looking at do we want to replay eight years ago or four years ago? there is a discontented voter whose last chance was nikki haley and they do not know where to go. biden has not excited them yet and trump is focusing on his base. now that we shift into the general election tonight, it is going to be up to both those camps to

a commanding lead in all seven estates and to what rodney said, joe biden did not have a record in 2020, he was a hypothetical president, people did not necessarily like donald trump 's trees, he is not hypothetical any more. everything thatjoe biden has touched has turned into a disaster, including on the world stage where we have the middle east and europe at war and that isjoe biden and when they go to make that binary choice, it is going to be an easy choice. it is not a disaster? absolutely not. you have to discount all of the things that biden has done. we have a strong economy but you cannot say that if you are a trump supporter and you have to keep saying it is a disaster. but they do. every single issue. _ but they do. every single

in the memory, it has turned into yet another stormy night of weather across many parts of the uk. this time the culprit is storm jocelyn. you can see this swirl of cloud here on our earlier satellite picture, the centre of a deep area of low pressure. this met office amber warning enforced to start wednesday across northern and western parts of scotland. gusts of up to 80mph in exposed spots, bringing the risk of damage and disruption. but a windy start to wednesday across just about all parts of the uk, so those winds could cause problems if you are travelling early in the morning. low pressure then crossing to the north of the uk. all these white lines, all these isobars still squeezing together as we head into wednesday morning proper. so gales to start the day across parts of scotland and northern england especially. those winds will slowly ease as the day wears on, but i think it will stay particularly gusty into the afternoon to the eastern side of the pennines. some showers around, particularly across scotland, northern ireland, northern england. many of those will fade. we will see a decent amount of sunshine through the day, albeit that sunshine turning quite hazy, with high clouds streaming in from the south. another mild day —

9 to 12 degrees. now, during wednesday night will see this band of cloud and some outbreaks of patchy rain pushing northwards and eastwards. ahead of that, some clear spells could see some fog patches developing across parts of northern england and scotland, at least for a time. and some murky conditions developing across parts of wales, south—west england, around coasts and hills, as the air turns increasingly mild. those are the temperatures to start thursday morning. so on thursday, this warm front pushing its way northwards. outbreaks of rain with that and this feed of south—westerly winds behind a wedge of really very mild air indeed. so a pretty mild feeling day on thursday, but with extensive cloud cover. some outbreaks of rain pushing north—eastward, briefly some snow over high ground in scotland, but that won't last long, should mostly turn back to rain. a few brighter glimpses, particularly to the east of high ground, anywhere where you get some shelter from the wind. but those temperatures easily nine to 13 degrees. i wouldn't be at all surprised if some were got just a little bit higher than that. and then as we head towards friday and the weekend,

says former president donald trump has won the state's republican primary. the race was called in trump's favourjust over 20 minutes after all polls closed — a setback to former governor nikki haley. but haley vows to continue on, taking the race to her home state of south carolina. new hampshire is a first in the nation. it is not the last in the nation. this race is far from over. there are dozens of states left to go. the next one is my sweet state of south carolina. i'm caitriona perry live here in washington, dc. new hampshire marks a critical time for haley's presidential run as she looks to narrow trump's growing lead.
