new hampshire is first in the nation — it is not the last. this race is far from over. there are dozens of states left to go. super tuesday— most of the states are open primaries — _ which means independents and democrats can vote i alongside republicans. that, at this point, | is the only way that nikki haley can take _ the nomination from donald trump. our panel this hour, sonia priya sodha — chief leader writer at the observer and a guardian columnist. scott galloway — professor of marketing at the new york university stern school of business and broadcaster. and joel rubin, former deputy assistant secretary of state for the obama administration first, though the latest bbc news. russia has accused the ukrainian military of shooting down a military plane in the russian region of belgorod, near the border.

the russians say the aircraft was carrying 65 ukrainian prisoners of war and that everyone on board was killed. the un humanitarian agency in gaza says nine people have been killed after two israeli tank rounds hit a building in a training centre, in gaza's main southern city of khan yunis. 800 people had taken refuge there. the us military says iranian—backed houthi rebels have fired three missiles toward an american container ship transiting the gulf of aden. one missile fell into the sea. the other two were shot down by a us warship. there were no reported injuries of damage to the container ship and italy's parliament has approved a controversial deal, which would see some asylum seekers transferred to albania. the plan is to have processing centres on albanian territory, which will deal with the claims under italian law. good evening. donald trump has made a giant step towards the republican nomination, adding new hampshire to the victory

he sealed in iowa just a week ago. the former president saw off a late rally from challenger nikki haley, to take the granite state byjust over 11 points, but any satisfaction he felt at that result, seemed to be overshadowed by his irritation that she is refusing to concede. you know we have to do what is good for party, she was up and i said, quote or while, she's doing a speech like she won. " we had an honour —— unbelievable week last week in iowa, we set a record, it was the best in the history of the caucus, in the history, and i remember, isort of had the same feeling. i am up and emotion and think she's taken a victory lap, we beat her so badly. but, ron beecher also, victory lap, we beat her so badly. but, ron beecheralso, he victory lap, we beat her so badly.
9:03 pm
but, ron beecher also, he came in at second then he left, she came in third and she is still hanging around. nikki haley did acknowledge that the odds are stacked against her and congratulated donald trump on his victory. but the former governor of south carolina is determined to fight onto the next primary in her home state in a month's time. i want to congratulate donald trump on his victory tonight. he earned that, and i want to acknowledge that. now, you have all heard the chatter among the political class. they are falling all overthemselves, saying this race is over. it's not over! cheering. well, i have news for all of them. new hampshire, is first in the nation, it is not last in the nation. cheering. this race is far from over. there are dozens of states left to go. cheering.

the unique factor within the new hampshire primary is the size of the undeclared, independent voters. they were 40% of the ballot. and they broke for nikki haley, 60% to 38 % who voted for trump. but it is the republican vote that is so critical. no candidate wins the nomination without carrying their own party. and among those who declared themselves republican yesterday, 74% voted for trump 25% for haley. that is really the story of this election so far. let me show you the early polling from south carolina. a state closer in character to iowa than new hampshire. it is 53% trump, 22% haley. she does have four weeks, to make in—roads into that lead. but that is why there is significant scepticism in the party that haley can win. you have the rnc chair calling for the party tonight, they are the sort

glimpses of sunshine, not a bad afternoon in hexham, northumberland. and as we go through the evening and overnight, the winds will continue to ease. we've got these weather fronts starting to slowly drift in from the west. they'll bring outbreaks of rain, but they will also introduce this south—westerly flow, which is driving milder air right across the country. so there'll be a lot of clouds to start the day on thursday. outbreaks of drizzle, misty conditions along west coasts and some rain moving out of northern ireland into northern scotland. but by the afternoon, most of the persistent rain will have eased away. it will stay damp and drizzly with a few showers out to the west. but an incredibly mild story for all of us. 13 celsius in london — at this time of year, we should be seeing temperatures around 7—8 celsius. there will be some showery outbreaks of rain into northern england. hopefully a brighter story into the afternoon for northern ireland. mild here, and still very mild particularly in comparison to where we were just over a week ago in scotland, highs of 10—12 celsius. now, through thursday night into the early

hours of friday morning, there'll be a spell of heavier, more persistent rain, as the cold front starts to push its way steadily eastwards. hopefully that will clear away from east anglia. here, it will be a mild start on friday morning. clearer skies, fresher conditions, 4—5 celsius in the far north and west. but that's where we'll have the best of the sunshine. and on the whole, a ridge of high pressure will build on friday, keeping things largely fine and quiet. a few scattered showers along north and west—facing coasts of scotland and northern ireland. a little bit fresher here, but generally those temperatures above where they should be for the time of year still, at around 6—12 celisus. into the start of the weekend, england and wales still under this influence of high pressure, quiet and dry. toppling across the high, we'll see weather fronts. so as we look further ahead, there's always the risk of some wetter and windier weather into the far north and west, nowhere near as severe as it has been. and on the whole, that mild trend is going to stay with us. the best of any sunshine certainly across central and southern areas, but not a bad weekend

new polling out today predicts a *sharp turn to the right* in the european parliamentary elections this summer. the "anti—european" populists are forcecast to finish first, in at least nine eu member states. and that would reshape eu policy making in the midst of an already fraught period. today it was the french farmers protesting at the european parliament. we have seen similar protests in italy. and in germany. at the heart of it, a cost of living crisis, and a green transition that adds further uncertainty. more broadly, though is a theme across europe that we have heard again and again in the united states. the idea that government is too remote, too detached from the lives of ordinary people. the polling comes the european council on foreign relations, the reports co—author is kevin cunningham who joins us from dublin.
