and, 16—year—old zak carrick—smith continues to impress at the winter youth olympic games. your very welcome along to the programme wherever you are watching around the world. it's one of the toughest places to go to and win a test series — and there's nothing that happened on day one of england's first test in india to suggests that it will be changing anytime soon. although it's very early days, india seem to have already
2:46 am
grabbed control of the opening match — thanks to excellent bowling initially — and then some excellent batting from india's new star yashasvi jaswal. england all out for 246 with the hosts reaching 119—1 by the close of play. bbc sports* chief cricket writer stephan shemilt watched the opening day's play in hyderabad — and spoke to my colleague olly foster earlier. it was always going to be a question in this series of how england's swashbuckling batters dealt with turning pitches and india's skilful spinners. and you know what i think they did ok for 80% of the day. yes, they lost wickets in clusters. there was a few times where they lost three wickets pretty quickly. but 246, i thought, when england were eventually bowled out, seemed pretty competitive. only later on in the day, when india showed such intent with the bat, was that shown to be not the case. getting past 200, a lot of that was down to to ben stokes* knock. and we know he's not going to be bowling in this series.
2:47 am
so it was important for the skipper to step up today, wasn't it? yeah. and he found himself at the crease when england were 137—6. and everyone knows that ben stokes is almost england's patron saint of lost causes. he's almost at his best when his back is against the wall. he is playing solely as a batter and he really did step up. he managed to drag 109 runs out of england's last four partnerships. he really marshalled the tail. he hit three big sixes, two of them back to back to go past 50. it looked like it had the potential to be a real stoke special, but he was eventually undone by a special bit of bowling by jasprit bumrah to be out for 70, england's last man last man out when they were finally dismissed for 246. yashasvi jaiswal, what a prospect he is for india. he'll resume on 76 in the morning. yeah.
2:48 am
i think he really got stuck into the england bowl in a 47—ball half century, 76 not out from 70 deliveries, nine fours and three sixes. a modern day batter, only 22 years old, but brought off on the ipl and the white ball game. it's just this fifth test match, but he's already made a big hundred. this is his second half century and he's got the potential to kick on tomorrow and really get another big score. and back india into a position where they can put lots and lots of pressure on the england batting because if india get a lead of about 100 runs, then england are really going to be up against it. bbc sports* chief cricket writer stephan shemilt speaking to 0lly foster earlier. let us move on to football. at the asian cup, south korea drew 3—3 with malaysia to set up a last—i6 clash with saudi arabia. son heung—min*s 94th minute penalty looked to have won the match forjurgen klinsmann*s side. after trailing 2—i this made it 3—2 to south korea. but there was one
2:49 am
last twist to come. in the 15th minute of stoppage time, romel morales grabbed a dramatic equaliser, to earn malaysia's first asian cup point in 44 years. the result means south korea finish second in group e and will avoid a clash with four—time winners japan in the knockout stages. we wanted to go through in first place. that was our goal. and i think the team played that way, the team kept pushing and pushing and creating and we had plenty of opportunities. they defended really well. malaysia worked so hard. they really played with a lot of heart. you have to give them a lot of credit for their performance. but we should have won this game ends and then playjapan in the next round. instead of south korea, it's bahrain who will face the japanese. they top the group

after beating jordan i—0. abdulla yusuf helal with the goal. saudi arabia — who had already guaranteed a last—i6 spot — top group f. they were held to a goalless draw against thailand who finish second in the group. 0man missed the chance to join them in the knockout stages after being held to a 1—1 draw with kyrgyzstan. after taking an early lead their hopes evaporated when forward joel kojo capitalised on some miscommunication between the keeper and the defence. instead it's indonesia who go through — they finished with a better record as a third—placed team along with syria, palestine and jordan. so here's how the last 16 looks. the first of those matches get under way in qatar on sunday. tajikistan, indonesia, syria and palestine have all made the knockout stages for the first time. atletico madrid are into the copa del rey semi—finals after a 1—0 win over sevilla. memphis depay scored after coming on as a substitute to help them join real

sociedad, athletic bilbao and real mallorca in the final four. atletico survived a late scare when pablo barrios conceded a penalty but the decision was overturned after a var review. the fourth round of the fa cup kicked off with a thumping 5—0 win for bournemouth against swansea. the two sides are just a division apart but from the moment lloyd kelly put bournemouth ahead afterjust seven minutes — there was no chance of any kind of upset. bournemouth scored four more goals — all before half—time — david brooks amongst the scorers — as the premier league side reached round five for the first time in three years. we've done ourjob. you know, we were in the last 16. we were also in the carabao cup in the last 16. we sometimes you're also very dependent on the draw. we were unlucky in carabao cup we faced liverpool. we were close, but they left us

out and now they are in the final. let's see what we have in the draw. if we play at home, we play away, who we play. but i think we are giving us chances. and let's hope that we can continue this route in the cup. northern ireland's record appearance holder steven davis is retiring from football. he led his country to a first european championships in 2016. the 39—year—old won four league titles with rangers in two spells at ibrox. a serious knee injury sustained just over a year ago has proved too much to overcome. norwegian side brann qualified for the quarterfinals of the women's champions league after their win at slavia prague. the only score of the game came from a second half own goal from slavia goalkeeper 0livie lukasova. lyon hammered st polten, while holders barcelona beat eintracht frankfurt 2—0. that meant that despite benfica

drawing 2—2 at rosengard they made the last eight, along with chelsea, lyon and barcelona, with three more places up for grabs next week in the final round of group games. a spanishjudge has proposed that former football federation president luis rubiales should stand trial over the women's world cup kiss involving captainjenni hermoso. mr rubiales grabbed ms hermoso*s head and kissed her during the presentation after spain's victory in australia. she said the kiss was "not consensual", a statement denied by mr rubiales. ajudge has found there is enough evidence for the matter to proceed to trial. rugby union's six nations championship is a week away. scotland play their first match on the saturday against wales in cardiff. the scots finished third last year after a really good campaign that included a win over england at twickenham. there's plenty of optimism

ahead of this year's championship, and harmony, finn russell, who has been dropped from the squad twice over the past few years for various indiscretions, is now one of the co—captains. we've had sort of high expectations for these competitions, winning the six nations, the world cup. and we've never won anything. so yeah, we've had some big results and we've beaten them away, we beat them at home, we beat in france. so we've had a few big results, which for scotland it was brilliant. but i think we've never won anything, have we? so these one off games, they're great to win, but as a group were desperate to win a trophy. and finally, 16—year—old zak carrick—smith continues to impress at the youth olympic games. earlier, he clinched the men's slalom title in south korea. it's been an incredible week for him. on monday he became the first british alpine skier to win a winter olympic event

with victory in the combined. britain's medal tally of three golds and one silver at the games makes it their best ever performance. that is all the sport. for me and the rest of the team bye—bye. hello. thursday was a pretty cloudy but very mild day. temperatures reached 14.4 celsius in a couple of spots. friday won't be quite as mild. a little bit cooler, a little bit fresher, but more in the way of sunshine. and just for some of us, a few showers around, particularly across parts of scotland. but an overnight weatherfront has brought a lot of us some rain. that's just pushing its way eastwards. now through the early hours of friday it'lljust be lingering across parts of east anglia, the south—east of england as well. so early rain for some
2:56 am
in the south and east that clears away. and then we're left with clear spells for all blustery showers coming in across the north—west for scotland over the higher ground. they could be falling as snow for a time. perhaps one or two showers for northern ireland and northern england, but they'll be few and far between. further south, you should stay dry all day. temperatures in the afternoon about 5—9 degrees. so for some of us, i think they're actually going to come down a little bit through the day. these are the wind gusts that we're expecting. it's going to be particularly windy up towards the northwest of scotland. western isles could see gales at times. into friday evening, more blustery showers in the north and the west, clearer and lighter winds to the south and east. and we could see some mist and fog patches forming through perhaps the midlands, east anglia, the southeast as well. temperatures getting down to two or three here in the towns and cities, so a slight frost. further north, they've got more of a breeze, more cloud and patchy rain to keep those temperatures from falling too low. and then into the weekend, then it is back to the mild air, particularly by sunday. the winds coming in from the south where the front approaching from the west later on sunday.
2:57 am
but for saturday, early morning mist and frost clearing away quite quickly. a bit of rain for parts of northern scotland where it will still be breezy and perhaps some patchy rain into northern ireland later in the day. but for central and southern scotland, much of england and wales are dry day. top temperatures around about nine or ten degrees. into the second half of the weekend, sunday probably going to be that a little bit warmer than saturday. again, quite a bit of sunshine around, a little bit of cloud drifting around here and there and more rain into northern ireland and western scotland later on in the day. but before it arrives, look at those temperatures, 12 or 13 degrees. so above average, certainly for this time of year. into next week, low pressure starts to try and move its way in from the atlantic. we've got higher pressure across the continent, but things could turn a little bit more unsettled, particularly in the north for the middle part of the week onwards. but it's remaining mostly dry in the south. and certainly for all of us, it's looking mild. bye— bye.
