in the premier league next season. ipswich town are second in the championship having lost fewer games than anyone else — but today they had no answer for the side four divisions below them as ben croucher reports. you might think it'sjust a game of football, just another cup competition, but if you want to know what a competition can do, take a look at maidstone united. they made history. the magic is still very much alive, maidstone in the fifth round, itjust keeps getting better and better. they travelled to ipswich town of the championship and quickly discovered why they are targeting a return to the premier league. shot after shot after shot came and went without reward, 18 in total in the first half, maidstone had won, this was it.
7:33 pm
something isjust beginning in suffolk! his first maidstone goal, perfect timing. if that was the start, ipswich wanted the final say and whenjeremy sarmiento scored the match, suggested they'd see the match through, but this fa cups still has that old magic. incredible, just incredible! theyjust had to cling stretch every sinew , every nail—biting minute of stoppage time until... maidstone united have done it! not many can say they can make it to this round, go out and put on a performance like that, it's tough of course, but to get two goals, especially with the turnout that we have with our fans, it's amazing, you know, words can't describe how we feel right now. going out to all the fans, all

the team performance, everybodyjust cranking up at the end but we keep fighting, we keep fighting until the _ end and at the line and everything, so yeah. what a great day. and they'll get at least one more. but sometimes it's about more than just football. ben croucher, bbc news. elsewhere in the cup today, brighton held off sheffield united to win 5—2 at bramhall lane, william osula made it two all after brighton went two up. but the visitors recovered with two more goals forjoao pedro as he completed his hat—trick — the seagulls soaring into the fifth round. we are very proud to play withjoao pedro, in our team. i think he can play better than the performance today, but anyway he's improving, he's working very well, very hard.

there was late drama at goodison park where a replay looked inevitable, but luton town scambled in a winner thanks to cauley woodrow in the 96th minute — sending everton crashing out 2—1. he said after he had broken a bone in his hand. it's only the second time in over a decade that luton have reached the fifth round. it was an all championship affair at the king power as leaders leicester city saw of birmingham by three goals to nil. jamie vardy scored the opener — his first goal in more than two months. the other all championship tie will go to a replay after leeds and plymouth finished in a 1—1 draw at elland road. there is a late game this evening, its ongoing at the moment at craven cottage. currently goalless between fulham and newcastle. elsewhere, its been yet another masterclass from england striker laurenjames as chelsea have comfortably seen off the challenge of brighton in the only game

of the day in the women's super league. james, who you'll remember scored a hat trick last weekend has scored two more this evening as her side won 3—0. some brilliant finishing once again. her england team mate fran kirby got the other. chelsea are now six points clear at the top of the wsl. it's three wins in a row for rangers in the scottish premiership, as they try to chase celtic down at the top of the tablejust one at the top of the table. just one goal was needed at st mirren — a delightful long ball from john lundstram, slotted home by cyriel dessers — cool as you like — inside the first 15 minutes. and that's how it finished for ranagers who are second, and five points behind celtic with a game in hand. and that's because celtic did not slip up against ross county, although it was a tight one too, alistairjohnston*s first—minute goal enought to win it. all 12 teams played today —

victory for hearts and dundee as well. hibernian took home a point with a 1—1 draw against io—man kilmarnock. stjohnstone and motherwell also played out a 1—1 draw. the africa cup of nations returned to action with angola winning the first round of 16 match against namibia to become this year's first quarterfinalists. 3—0 it finished, with both sides finishing with ten men. the blockbuster match is to come, you can watch it on bbc three from eight o'clock, with nigeria taking on cameroon. let's move on to cricket because after a very average first couple of days for england, they now have hope in their first test against india. the man they have to thank is ollie pope, who hit a magnificent century in hyderabad on day three, his best innings for england. an epic, unbeaten, 148 which has dragged them to 316—6 in their second innings, that's a lead of 126. joe lynskey was watching.
7:38 pm
batting in india takes time, takes patience. after three days of toil, england can just about see a way to win this match. india came back to bat and looked to stretch out their lead. for half an hour, all was good, until england's first breakthrough. two wickets and two balls saw joe root clear the tail. england almost 200 behind, but they went to chase at speed. with zach crawley and ben duckett england moved along, but indian brilliance can be metjust one ball away. this was meant to be a pitch made for spinners, but so often he defies. england were five wickets down, still 27 runs behind. in need of salvation, they got it from pope.
7:39 pm
last summer all the pope had his ashes series cut short, now last summer ollie pope had his ashes series cut short, now back from injury he kept the home crowd sedated, for a point of control india must now wake up to a contest. the surrey batter made his century, england's lead went past 100, tomorrow they'll bat on with four wickets still in hand and in pope, there is hope. joe lynskey, bbc news. it was a brilliant day's cricket. we did a lot of things well today, regardless of what happens the rest of the game, it being a long five match series we've laid down some good markers to show that we do have the tools and skills, the way that pope has played today it's a classic lesson in how to bat in his condition as an overseas player. someone that's not exposed to these surfaces day in, day out, to come off a very serious injury like he
7:40 pm
had in the summer, have that amount of time out of the game. it's one of the best knocks i've ever seen, and i've seen a lot of cricket. played out in the middle with a lot of brilliant players, to witness that today was really special. high praise from joe root. so here is how things stand at stumps on day 3 of the first test in hyderabad. that 148 not out from ollie pope really has dramatically changed the complexion of the match. rehan ahmed the man that will be keeping him company when play resumes tomorrow morning. remember england at one point today were 163—5, they'll start day 4 on 316—6 thats a lead of 126. next to melbourne where aryna sabalenka has retained her women's australian open singles title. the belarusian number two seed beat china's zhung chinwen in straight sets to win her second grand slam singles title as nick
7:41 pm
parrott reports. the last fortnight has been a stroll in melbourne park for aryna sabalenka. she hasn't dropped a set in a way to the final. standing on her way was china's 12th seed, zhung chinwen. she was trying to emulate a different chinese player, li na, who won the australian open ten years ago. but she often looked overawed in her first major final and lost the first set in 33 minutes. a rare minute of uncertainty came from sabalenka came when she was trying to close out victory. looking to finish in style, she struggled to find a winner and ended up having to save a break point. on herfifth championship point, she eventually hit the shot she had been striving for. her delight clear to see if she became the first woman to win her delight clear to seeas she became the first woman to win back—to—back australian titles since her compatriot victoria azarenka over a decade ago. nick parrott, bbc news.
7:42 pm
so a second successive australian open title after the match, sabalenka dedicated her win to herfamily, particularly to her late father sergey, who died suddenly in 2019. with dreams she would one day win multiple grand slam titles: multiple grand slam titles. i'm speechless right now. i don't know how to describe my emotions, but definitely that i'm super, super happy and proud of everything i was able to achieve so far. and, yeah, happy with the level i played today and she's a great player and very tough appointment and i'm super happy i was able to get this win today. i just couldn't quit. i felt like ijust have to keep doing what i'm doing, just have to keep fighting for my dream and make sure that if there is something i want to believe there is something that my father is watching me and very proud of me, so ijust couldn't come i couldn't stop for my family and of of me, so ijust couldn't, i couldn't stop for my family and of
7:43 pm
course there is the moment when you are like, ok, problem, i will never get it. but you just have to keep working hard and just keep trying you'll see it then, if it's meant to be for you, or if it's not. things didn't go so well for another defending champion today — and that's alfie hewett — who couldn't retain his wheelchair singles title, losing to the japanese teenager, tokito oda. hewett won the singles trophy for the first time 12 months ago, but lost in straight sets. he will still leave melbourne with silverware of course, with he and his partner gordon reid having already been crowned men's doubles champions. for tokito oda, at 17, it's his third grand slam singles title — with all his wins coming against alfie hewett — after he lost to him in melbourne last january: i was runner—up last year, and then i played... against alfie also last year, and then... but, i'm, ithink, the score is not what i wanted, and then this time was, i played really well and i'm just really happy.
7:44 pm
watching all of today's events unfold at melbourne park was our tennis correspondent russell fuller — who's was particularly impressed with aryna sabalenka's win: the whole fortnight she has been very impressive and she has underlined why many people thought she was the favourite, not an easy thing to do, defending a grand slam title, and to do so without dropping a set having not played any top 50 she made a fast start. having not played any top 50 opponents to get to the final was a little taken aback and a little bit of time to get used to the pace of sabalenka's ball. it's fairly straightforward after the early break, and chinwen you felt the writing was on the wall, and there wasn't too much in the way ofjeopardy. it always felt as if sabalenka
7:45 pm
was in control of the final. it leaves to tokito oda again, that young 17—year—old, of course the french open ended the again today. the french open beat him at wimbledon after alfie hewitt had beaten the only 16—year—old of course there at the australian open at the start of last year. and he could be a thorn in alfie hewett*s side. only kunieda has one more grand slam titles then alfie hewitt, and his retirement would make you think that this was a chance for him to pursue his record, of course when one great champion retires another one normally comes up and that could be quite a rivalry between the two of them because alfie hewett is only 26, so i think he's going to be in the sport for many, many years, but he's going to have to come up with a way of overcoming this amazing 17—year—old who has a very big game. he played absolutely brilliantly today and was fairly
7:46 pm
comfortable as a winner. we spoke earlier in the week on sportsday about ron were part of making history and he now has his hands on the first men's doubles grand slam title. it didn't feel right that someone who had such a great career had never won a men's doubles title in a grand slam, he did so with... he did so with ebden of australia. very successful recent run for them. but also that may be he had never been world number one given what he contributed to the sport, to do so at the age of 43 all the more remarkable and yes, discovering yoga, having a covert discovering yoga, having a covid pandemic that had perhaps gave his ageing body a little chance to rest, and working very very hard on his fitness, that doesn't mean he's on the treadmill and he's pounding up the miles in the way perhaps

younger players will do, it's all about strengthening the upper legs in particular to enable him to remain at the very top of his sport as he approaches his his mid—40s. approaches his mid—40s. incredible for him. tomorrow we have the men's final, no djokovic, no federa in it, first time the australian open winner in either daniil medvedev or the equally impressive jannick sinner. what are your impressions about one? what are your impressions about that one? with interesting is you have one player that's never been in a grand slam before, yannick sinner, and then you have daniil medvedev, he's number one at the us open when he won his first title thereby beating novak djokovic, then you look at the number of hours on the court that medvedev has spent, nearly six hours longer than centre. hours longer than sinner. the second of which was with alex for a the semifinal,
7:48 pm
the first of which finished at 3:a0am on the first friday of that spring championships. of that championships. and the fact thatjannik sinner has been playing brilliantly, fuelled with the confidence of last year inc. of last year including two wins over novak djokovic and winning this cup with italy, he's only dropped one set and he suddenly become the player everyone expected him to. so i don't think he's going to be overall in a first grand slam title but it's impossible to say with any certainty, so i think he could be very, very competitive, i would be edging towards a jannik sinner victory. you can hear from you can hearfrom russell fuller tomorrow morning on the match between daniil medvedev and yannick centre. time now for some of the day's other sport stories... league leaders, london lions, have beaten the caledonia gladiators in the semifinal of the british basketball league trophy. they're through to the final tomorrow against the winner

of the ongoing match between chester phoenix and leicester riders. in the world rally championship, elfyn evans has let his lead slip. he now sits in third place behind thierry nuville and sebastien ogieran ahead of the final day of racing tomorrow. drama in rugby league's challenge cup this afternoon. stanningley are through to the third round after a drop goal winner in the very last minute, knocking leigh miners rangers out of the competition. quite some celebrations there. all the results are over on the bbc sport website. luke littler has tonight avenged his defeat to luke humphries in the world darts championship final earlier this month by beating him in the quarterfinal of the dutch darts masters. littler, who turned 17 a week ago, came from behind to win 6—5 in a dramatic final—leg win. the pair will meet again on thursday in the opening night of the premier league in cardiff.

it's an important day forjumps racing particularly at cheltenham where it was *trials day* where hopefuls for the festival showed their form. and the cotswold chase, which is for gold cup contenders — was won by capo—dahno for irish trainer willie mullins who hasn't actually entered him for the gold cup, instead he's in the ryanair. that may change, but today's race was tinged with sadness when crowd favourite dats—alright—gino sustained a fatal injury. the most prestigious race of the day — the re—arranged clarence house chase which is normally run at ascot — threw up a huge upset when the big favouritejonbon was beaten by the outsider elixir du nutz. it's a first grade one for his teenage jockey freddiejin—jel, and his unclejoe tizzard — who trains the horse. and there was an incredible finish in the international hurdle, when the grand national winner — nobel yates showed his versatility

game of the season. five first half tries saw bristol roar into a 33—15 first half lead. however, bath came back strong, sparked by tom de glanville's wonder try, eventually forcing their way back to within 6 points. but with moments left rich lane intercepted scotland captain finn russell's cross kick to secure the win. just another line of rugby union to bring you. the director of rugby for world champions south africa, rassie erasmus, is recovering in hospital after undergoing treatment for chemical burns. erasmus coached the springboks to world cup glory in 2019 and was heavily involved as director of rugby in their triumph last year as well. erasmus, was involved in what a statement from the springboks says was "a freak accident using a powerful detergent product" but he "expects to return to full—time working within weeks". in the last hour, england have

beaten new zealand by one goal in an incredible match to reach the final of netball*s nations cup in leeds. they'll now play the world champions australia tomorrow. it was a frantic match, both sides could have won it — england getting over the line byjust one point — 58 — 57 it finished. so it will be a replay of last years world cup final, with the red roses taking on australia — and england will hope this time they can win it. australia had already qualified for that final, after finishing top of the group thanks to earlier wins over both new zealand and england. and they warmed up for tomorrow's final with victory over uganda — 63—49 it finished. we heard yesterday that lando norris has signed a contract extension with mclaren. he made it onto the podium six times last season and finished sixth in the standings. he's been speaking to our reporter emily brown about the rumours linking him to champions red bull and teaming up with oscar piastri again.

it was great. i'm at home here, it's where i grew up, is the team i supported as a kid. i'm at home, so to continue that journey, continue her story journey, continue our story together, we are closer than ever to achieving our title which is to win the championship tear. win the championship together. i saw the rumours and all those things, i enjoy seeing them sometimes, every driver does if they say they don't then they* re probably behind. you always have little chats just to see where the teams are at, what their plans are, what they could offer if something if something was to change, but as soon as we, it was brought up and we spoke about what's our plan together as mclaren, between us both, it was quite a straightforward chat. last year he gave me a good challenge, it was tough. he pushed me and i pushed him and i think we learned a lot. in terms of a rookie being in formula 1, he was already very prepared. before we go, let's just remind you of our top story this evening.

it came at portman road where ipswich were knocked out of the fa cup by maidstone — 98 places below them in the football pyramid. this is the goal that will go down in fa cup folklore. sam corne putting the national league south side 2—1 up agaist the championship high flyers. they held on for the win and all important place in the hat for the fifth round of the cup. that takes place tomorrow. the late game is at craven cottage, there at half—time and newcastle united lead by a 1—0. you can keep across it on bbc sport website, but for me and the team, that is all for now, goodbye. hello there.

temperatures have been a little bit higher today, but we have seen more cloud around, particularly across more western parts of the uk. a lot of the cloud is still quite thin, high cloud, mind you. and if you have a look at the satellite picture, you can see all that cloud that's been coming in from the atlantic to the south of our weather front that's been hanging around in the north and north—west of scotland, bringing some outbreaks of rain. but through the night, as we see a southerly wind picking up, we're going to blow that rain band out of the way. it still could be quite cloudy in northern ireland and scotland, bit of dampness in the air now and again. rather more variable cloud across england and wales. and last night it got to minus three at exeter airport. lowest temperatures will be across eastern parts of england where we have clearer skies and there could be a touch of ground frost first thing on sunday morning. but with that wind picking up on sunday, we should see temperatures continuing to rise and most places will have a dry day again. some sunshine at times, a bit more cloud in the south west of england, maybe moving into the midlands and ahead of our rain band approaching northern ireland and heading into the north—west of scotland, it's going to be windy with some gales in the north—west,
7:57 pm
some quite lively winds developing through the irish sea as well. but it is a southerly wind and that's why temperatures are continuing to rise. it's going to be a milder day on sunday, it could make 1a degrees in north wales and the moray firth. now those southerly winds are coming from a long way south and they could actually pick up some saharan dust, which will get blown in towards the uk just ahead of that weather front there, which will bring some wet weather. and we've got a bit more rain pushing towards england and wales. could turn quite heavy rain over the hills of wales, across northern england. and in the southern uplands, we're likely to find some snow falling as things get colder in scotland and northern ireland. but for the midlands, many parts of eastern england it may well be dry and we're in milder air here, so temperatures are likely to reach 1a or 15 degrees. that milder air, though, will get pushed away overnight as these weather fronts move their way eastwards. could bring some snow to other higher parts of eastern scotland before that low pressure is out
7:58 pm
of the way and all the wet weather is out of the way, leaving cloud for england and wales, sunshine across scotland and northern ireland. that'll push a bit further south through the day. it will introduce cooler air, mind you, so we've got eight degrees in glasgow. could make 12 degrees in the south—east.
