supporting its palestinian aid agency after claims 12 staff were involved in the hamas attacks on israel. the british warship, hms diamond, shoots down a drone fired by the iranian—backed houthis in their latest attack on ships in the red sea. hello, i'm rajini vaidyanathan. welcome to this hour. we start with a developing story in the uk. a murder investigation has been launched after two boys, aged 15 and 16, died in a stabbing in bristol last night. avon and somerset police say a 44—year—old man, and a 15—year old boy are in custody following the incident in knowle west. a vehicle has also been seized. police arrived at the scene within minutes and provided first aid. earlier, avon and somerset police
4:01 pm
gave an update on the incident. let's have a listen. around 11:20pm last night we received a report that two people were attacked carried out by a group of people on ilminster avenue. the first officer was on scene within minutes and did what they could to provide first aid before the boys were taken to hospital by the ambulance service. tragically, neither survived their injuries. the boys foster families were with them at hospital and our thoughts are with them as they process these awful events. a murdering quarry has been launched by the major crime investigation team and two people have been arrested and are currently in police custody. the boys* families have been informed of the arrests and we will continue to support them and update them on the investigation using our specially trained family liaison officers. a large gordon is in place on ilminster avenue whilst crime scene investigators examined the scene and other officers carry out inquiries including house—to—house inquiries and the collection of any cctv

footage. —— cordon. there are a significant number of properties within the cordon but we would like to apologise to those affected and stressed the importance of the work carried out. i would like to ensure people we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to catch those responsible for this reprehensible attack and provide answers to the victims* families. we are in the early stages of our inquiry and we have already identified a number of witnesses who we will be taking statements from. if there is anyone who has information on who is not yet spoken to us we would urge them to contact us or crimestoppers anonymously as soon as possible. in the meantime, to provide reassurance to the community, the neighbourhood policing team will be carrying out increased patrols in the area and should anyone have any particular concerns relating to this incident i would encourage them to approach an officer. i will now take any questions. what can you say about
4:03 pm
the lead—up to this incident? any idea what was happening beforehand and why these boys may have been attacked? not at this stage and it is still subject to the ongoing investigation looking for the cctv and accounts of people in the locality. can you say anything — there has uppishly been a fair few stabbings in the area, any suggestion there is any link between any of them? knife crime is up for a huge concern in bristol is a large city as it is elsewhere around the country and we are determined to identify who is responsible and deal with the underlying causes causing people to carry knives on the streets. can you say at this point whether the attackers and the victims were known to each other? we don*t know that information at this stage. other than the two that were killed, were any other people stabbed or injured? we have had no reports of any other stabbings having taken place at this time. is there any suggestion it was a case of mistaken identity? there is no indication
4:04 pm
or information we are able to provide in relation to that issue at this stage. do we know about how the double—decker bus is involved with the incident? there was a bus that was nearby at the time which we are keen to speak to people who were on the bus on its normal route, so part of the normal transport around the city at that time of the evening. do we know whether it involved people on the bus or getting off the bus by any chance? it*s not believed they were. there was a vehicle involved in the incident and we have recovered that vehicle so we don*t believe there was a link directly to the bus. how important is it that you can trace people who were on the bus that may be able to help? one of our appeals is to speak to people who were on that bus see if they can provide information to us or see anyone in the vicinity that can help us with the inquiries. what is the impact on the community? significant. as you can see an incident like this is horrific in nature. it causes real distress and upset to all within the community and we will be working hard. i*ve spoken to the mayor already today about what we can do in response to this to make sure the local community are supported as well as the families of those who have tragically
4:05 pm
lost their lives. two have been arrested. are you looking for further suspects? there are further suspects being sought amongst the group we believe are responsible. do you have a message for the community? i*d like to sympathise with the community for what they have suffered, the families at the heart of that. i*d like to appeal to them to support us in our investigations. i*m sure that information will be available to us for more people have i*m sure that information will be available to us through what people have seen and their ring doorbell footage to help police investigations so we can identify those responsible and bring them to justice. you said you are seeking other suspects, is that people you are actually hunting for, people you have names for? i don*t have that information at this stage but there are certainly other suspects involved in the incident beyond the two arrested so far. are you getting help from people here that you need to identify exactly who was involved and what happened here? we have had good support so far, some good opportunities from the information made available
4:06 pm
to us from cctv, witness accounts and i would urge people to continue to give us that information. that*s what will be key to identifying and bringing those responsible to justice. thank you, all. could you give your rank and spell your name? when you see an attack like this on two young teenagers on your patch, what does it make you feel? it makes me feel deeply upset. frustrated. that offences like this would take place anywhere. it is demoralising. but it makes me determined to support the community, makes me determined to work with the team of police officers we have committed to this to identify those and bring them to justice. superintendent mark runacres who gave an update on that investigation. one of the correspondence asking questions about our england correspondent dan johnson and he has sent us this update from the scene. the police were called here to ilminster avenue in this estate at

about 11:20pm last night to reports of these boys having been attacked and stabbed. we believe that double—decker bus marks the point where the attack took place. it isn*t thought the bus itself was involved, itjust happens to be passing at the time and has been caught up in what is now a huge area thatis caught up in what is now a huge area that is cordoned off while the forensic investigation goes on here. detectives trying to gather all the evidence they can to piece together exactly what led to this attack. they are appealing for witnesses, they are appealing for people who have cctv or door bell camera footage, anything that might give them a proper idea of who was involved in this, what the build—up was, what led to this attack, and then crucially what happened afterwards because police say they believe the offenders made off in a car and they have made two arrests already, a 44—year—old man and a 15—year—old boy who are in custody being questioned. but the police are also saying they believe others were involved and they are still being
4:08 pm
hunted. we believe that at least one of the boys lived on the street, so it has hit people here very hard. a huge amount of shock and sadness in the area. we have seen people coming to lay flowers. we know the police have escorted some relatives of the victims to see closer to the scene but it is something that has upset a huge amount of people here and it is causing a large degree of disruption with officers out questioning neighbours and people who live here, looking for that evidence, trying to piece together exactly what happened while people here are trying to get their heads around how to boys so young could have lost their lives in such a violent way. pare such a violent way. are correspondent - such a violent way. are correspondent dan - such a violent way. are correspondent danjohnson such a violent way. are correspondent dan johnson at the correspondent danjohnson at the scene. we will have plenty more on that story throughout the day on bbc news. the united nations has made a plea for governments not to withdraw funding from its main agency which delivers aid to palestinians in gaza — known as unwra. it comes as france becomes the latest country to pull money for the organisation —
4:09 pm
after israel alleged that 12 of its staff were involved in the deadly october 7th attacks by hamas. the agency, which employs 30,000 members of staff, 1,300 who work in gaza, says it is investigating and has already sacked nine employees. in a written statement, the un secretary—general, mr guterres, says, "the tens of thousands of men and women who work for unrwa, many in some of the most dangerous situations for humanitarian workers, should not be penalised. the dire needs of the desperate populations they serve must be met." here*s un spokesman, stephane dujarric speaking earlier. the secretary general is horrified by this news and asks mr lazzarini to investigate this matter swiftly and to ensure that any unrwa employees shown to have participated or abetted in what transpired on october 7th, or in any other criminal activity, be terminated immediately and referred for potential criminal prosecution.
4:10 pm
a total of ten countries have paused their funding for unrwa, including the us and the uk — although scotland has not changed its policy and is urging others to continue with the funding. the norwegian foreign minister said norway, which is one of unrwa*s biggest donors, would also continue its aid. we are exactly as appalled and shocked by these very serious allegations about local staff who have possibly taken part in terrorist attacks. that is 100% unacceptable and we need a full investigation of that. however, to react to that by cutting all funding to unrwa which is providing life—saving support to millions of people in the most dire conditions of their life, i think is a very wrong response. we have been talking a lot about unrwa. let*s get some history on unrwa.
4:11 pm
it*s the united nations relief and works agency for palestine refugees in the near east. it was established in 19119 by the united nations general assembly. its mandate is to help palestinians displaced by the 19118 palestinian war and subsequent conflicts. unwra operates in five key areas: jordan, lebanon, syria, the gaza strip, and the west bank — including eastjerusalem. it currently employs over 30,000 people, most of them palestinian refugees, and a small number of international staff. by 2019, more than 5.6 million palestinians were registered with unrwa as refugees. the organisation*s mandate is subject to periodic renewal every three years — it has consistently been extended since its founding, most recently until 30thjune 2026. our middle east correspondent mark lowen outlined the latest fallout fallout from israel*s allegations against members of unrwa
4:12 pm
staff, working in gaza. looking at those allegations, the un says that it concerns 12 members of staff. nine of them have been immediately dismissed. two are currently being identified and one, says the un secretary—general, has died. the seriousness with which the un is taking these accusations shows that they were incredibly serious, that these members of unrwa were alleged to have taken part in those attacks on 7th october. i also think that there is some international politics going on here because western governments are seeing an opportunity here to show a sympathetic understanding ear to israel publicly by pausing theirfunding of unrwa, while at the same time keeping up that quite sustained pressure on the israeli government at the moment to try to rein in its offensive. as for the israeli authorities,
4:13 pm
they also see an opportunity here to prove what they have long alleged and long believed, which is that the agencies of the un are biased or anti—semitic, they have long argued that unrwa encourages palestinians to, that the status of palestinians as refugees to be entrenched, longing to return to historic palestine, and therefore harbouring a hatred of israel. this is an opportunity for the israelis to bolster their argument. mark lowen there. the uk government says it remains "undaunted" after houthis targeted a british warship in the red sea during the latest round of strikes. these pictures show the moment hms diamond repelled the attack by firing sea viper missiles at an incoming which was heading directly towards the ship. the warship is currently situated in the red sea to protect merchant ships from houthi attacks. the uk ministry of defence says there were no injuries or damage.
4:14 pm
this latest strike from the iran backed group comes days after an oil tanker was hit. the fire on the marlin luanda was extinguished with no crew injured after french, indian and us naval ships provided assistance to the vessel. responding to the recent attacks — defence secretary grant shapps wrote: "the uk remains undaunted after yesterday*s illegal attack on hms diamond by the iranian backed houthis. our commitment to protect innocent lives and the freedom of navigation is absolutely unwavering." our political correspondent harry farley has the latest. this is isn*t even the first time hms diamond, which is a british navy destroyer in the red sea, not the first time that hms diamond has been targeted by houthi drones. the statement from the ministry of defence in london saying that this was an intolerable and illegal attack, which is completely unacceptable and the ministry of defence says it is our duty to protect

freedom of navigation in international waters. and as you say, the defence secretary grant shapps also condemning this attack. he says that the uk remains undaunted. so what happened, we understand, yesterday afternoon, the houthi group in yemen launched a drone targeting hms diamond. the crew on hms diamond activated the ship*s sea viper missile system, a missile system that costs more than £1 million per missile, and destroyed the drone. they say that there was no damage or injuries to anyone on board. but of course this isn*t the first time that hms diamond has been attacked and it does raise questions about whether the uk will be drawn into future air strikes. of course, the uk is already has already struck houthi targets in yemen once, joining the us in doing that, and it is raising
4:16 pm
the question of whether it will do that again. harry farley. now it*s time for a look at today*s sport with sarah. jannik sinner says he is ready for the pressure and expectation that comes with being a grand slam champion, after becoming the first italian to win the australian open. he beat daniil medvedev in an enthralling five set final. medvedev took control early on, winning the first two sets 6—3, 6—3. but then sinner, who was playing in his first grand slam final recovered under pressure, and started to impose his game. with the 22—year—old winning the next three sets 6—4, 6—4, 6—3. sinner had been widely tipped as a potential champion at melbourne park this year after a standout season on the atp tour and also leading italy to their first davis cup title in late november. and now a slam winner. most importantly, the support has been crazy throughout the whole two

weeks. you guys make me feel at home, so thank you so much. it is a chord with 15,000 people but it feels like so much more. so thank you so much for everyone. england captain ben stokes says his side*s 28—run win against hosts india in sunday*s first test was their best victory under his leadership over the last two years. facing an india side who had lostjust three times on their own patch in the past decade, england somehow turned a 190—run first—innings deficit into a hugely unexpected 28—run win. the biggest lead any touring team had ever previously overturned in india wasjust 65, by australia all the way back in 1964. stokes* vice—captain ollie pope was player of the match, saving the game with a stunning knock of 196, while debutant tom hartley forced the win with fourth—innings figures of 7-62.
4:18 pm
i think since becoming captain this is definitely the number one when. we have been part of some amazing games over the last two years. we have had some incredible victories. i think considering where we are, who we played against in the position we found ourselves going to in our second innings batting, to be able to sit now and say we are 1—0 up it is a big reason to say why i feel this is our best victory since i have become captain. staying with historic wins — west indies have pulled off a shock victory in australia. their first test victory in the country since 1997. the home side went into day four in brisbane well on their way to reaching their target of 216. but shamarjoseph despite an injured toe, took seven of the remaining eight wickets in just his second test match to take the windies to an eight—run win. the tourists finished the series level having taken an understrength side to australia. the fa has launched an investigation into the crowd trouble which marred sunday*s fa cup derby between west brom and wolves. play at the hawthorns was suspended for over half an hour due to disorder in the stands and fans spilling out onto

the pitch with police saying to people have been arrested. the stoppage came shortly after matheus cunha had struck to give wolves a 2-0 cunha had struck to give wolves a 2—0 lead. security and police ran to a corner of the ground supposedly holding home fans as the disturbances developed, while the players were shut off the pitch. some of the west brom players were concerned family member seated nearby and went into the stands to remove their children. —— ushered off the pitch. when play resumed the game finished 2—0, wolves. liverpool are in action in the closing moments against norwich. the first game sincejurgen klopp announced he was leaving the club. they are leading 4—2 leaving the club. they are leading 4-2 with leaving the club. they are leading 4—2 with five minutes of added time to play there. watford and southampton will have to play again to see who will make it through to the fifth round after they played out a 1—1 draw. league 2*s newport county, third division team here, will play manchester united. that is kicking off shortly.

australia set up in —— set up a tasty asian cup quarterfinal clash against south korea or saudi arabia with a 4—0 win over a spirited but limited indonesia on sunday. two goals in the first half put graham arnold*s side on their way. craig goodwin volleyed in a rebound on 89 minutes for 3—0, and defender harry souttar made it four in stoppage time. there it goes. it was australia*s third clean sheet in four matches and they have conceded only once. and that*s all the sport for now. remember you can stay right up—to—date using the bbc sport website and app. back to you. a busy weekend of sport. thank you, sarah. now to istanbul where one person has been killed and several injured in an attack by masked gunmen on a catholic church. the shooting happened at the church of santa maria during sunday morning mass at around 11:a0 am local time. this is the moment the masked gunmen were on their way to the church. turkey*s interior minister has condemned the "vile attack" and said an investigation has been launched. police are still searching
4:21 pm
for the suspects. our correspondent, orla guerin spoke to us from the church of santa maria. there is a real sense of shock here in the community about what has happened. turkey*s interior minister has just left after visiting the church behind me and offered his condolences to the congregation and to the priest. as he was leaving, he said there were those who are trying to destroy the unity that exists between different religions in turkey and it would not succeed. local officials have been stressing to us that this is an area where christians and muslims have lived together in harmony. one local official who we met this morning was so distressed he was close to tears and could hardly speak.
4:22 pm
cctv footage has emerged which appears to show the moment of the attack. it is very chilling, two gunmen who are masked walk into the back of the church. they appear to be following a man in black. the congregation are already on their feet facing the altar and they become aware of the shooting behind them. they start to duck and try to hide. but this appeared very much to be a targeted killing. the gunmen went directly for this one man, they shot him and once that happened they moved quite calmly towards the back of the church and left. there is a large police presence here still in the area. we have been hearing police helicopters. the search for the attackers is ongoing. there has been no claim of responsibility for this attack. we don*t know what the motive may be. attacks like this on turkey*s christian minority are rare. they have happened in the past but they are a rare occurrence. o rla orla guerin there. the world*s largest cruise ship — the icon of the seas — has set sailfrom miami in florida on its maiden voyage. it is 365

hello there. sunshine may have been rather limited today but it has been a warmer day than it was yesterday. the average maximum temperatures at this time of year range from six degrees in inverness to nine in southampton but today has been significantly milder, 15 degrees likely in the moray firth and around north wales. all due to a strengthening southerly wind which has been picking up ahead of this band of rain, still very gusty through the irish sea into the central belt of scotland. it*s been windier in the north—west of scotland but this evening, those winds are beginning to ease and the winds will fall lighter elsewhere as that band of rain moves through scotland and northern ireland and comes to rest across northern england and wales. to the north it is going to be colder, north of the central belt there could be some frost early on monday morning. south of our band of rain, it is much, much milder. but that rain could be heavy over the hills particularly in the north—west of england, much of scotland and northern ireland could be dry with some sunshine,
4:27 pm
significantly colder, mind you, than it is today, temperatures taking quite a tumble. but across the midlands, east anglia and the south—east where it is still dry we still have some mild air, temperatures of 1a or 15 degrees. wet weather in some places, and after dark we could see some snow falling over the southern uplands leaving some icy conditions by tuesday. by tuesday morning, that area of low pressure will have taken the wet weather out of the way, leaving a cloudy start for england and wales but we will have sunshine for scotland and northern ireland and that will push its way south through the day and introduce colder air again. it may make 12 degrees for a while in the south—east but i think eight or nine nearer the mark on tuesday afternoon. we*ve got lighter winds in southern parts of the uk into wednesday but further north a different story, wet and windy weather driving in on that weather front there. and it*s going to be particularly windy across the far north of scotland, but there*ll be gales widely into scotland, of scotland, but there*ll be gales widely in scotland, into northern ireland and the north

of england, over the hills in the highlands there could be a couple of inches of rain on wednesday. that wet and windy weather sweeps into northern ireland, england and wales look dry, some sunshine here and temperatures are still 10 or 11 degrees. as that weather front takes the rain southwards, after dark the rain just dies out, and then we will see a weather front returning to the north—west bringing back the milder air.
