to the un agency for palestinian refugees, despite a plea from the un chief for countries to continue funding. and israel says negotiations in paris over the release of hostages in gaza and a possible new ceasefire were "constructive" but "gaps remain". we will have a full bulletin of news at the top of the hour. now on bbc news — sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday with me, sarah mulkerrins. coming up... a famous test victory for england in one of the toughest places to tour. ben stokes calls the win over india his greatest triumph since he became captain.
7:31 pm
as the fifth round of the fa cup continues, crowd disorder mars the black country derby, halting play for 38 minutes as wolves beat west brom 2—0. and italianjannik sinner lands his first grand slam title with an extraordinary fightback to beat daniil medvedev at the australian open. welcome along. lots to come on a sunday full of enthralling sport stories. we start firstly with the cricketing one from india, where england managed one of their best ever away victories, stunning the hosts with a 28—run win in a dramatic finish to the first test in hyderabad.
7:32 pm
india had lost only three of their previous 46 home tests, with england captain ben stokes calling this win the greatest yet under his leadership. joe lynskey reports. to wina to win a test match in india is difficult enough. to win one like this is truly extraordinary. just their fourth test defeat at home in 12 years, and india's first innings lead was almost 200. but in came the man who flipped this match. ollie pope's shots defied belief and convention. by shots defied belief and convention. by the time he was out, england had more thanjust a by the time he was out, england had more than just a chance. a lead by the time he was out, england had more thanjust a chance. a lead of more thanjust a chance. a lead of more thanjust a chance. a lead of more than 200, and pope reset. catches him! for a different test of his reactions. this is tom hartley's test debut. his first ball in the match was hit for six. three days on, seven wickets. england's greatest spinning
7:33 pm
debut since 1948. hartley was here on the trust of his captain, ben stokes, who is 32 and just back from surgery. and yet, off balance, he hit the stumps with that throw. breakthrough! india got within 30 runs, but in the day's last over, hartley turned things again. oh! 0h! nol 0h! - no away oh! — no away team he has oh! no away team he has one from so far behind. the hartley and england, it is one of the great test comebacks. well, let's hearfrom the england captain then. ben stokes on this historic win. since i have become captain, this is definitely the number one when. we have been part of some amazing games over the past two years. —— the number one win. but i think considering where we are, who we play begins, the position we found ourselves going into our second innings of batting was... just to be able to sit here now and say we have
7:34 pm
gone i—0 ad, i think that's a big reason as to why i feel this is our best victory since i've become captain. bbc sport's chief cricket writer stephan shemilt has been reflecting on that win for england. here's what he told us after the match from hyderabad. it certainly is the best win under ben stokes and brendon mccullum, and that's certainly a big statement if you think about what england have achieved in the two years since those two men took charge, but it also goes straight into the conversation of one of england's best overseas winds ever, especially when you consider everything they put up with during this game and before it as well. england were taking on this indianjuggernaut, a team that had lost only three times in their last 46 tests, such a strong side, particularly their spinners, and england had such an inexperienced attack, tom hartley and ray and ahmed, two spinners with
7:35 pm
one cap between them. england would have loved to have leaned onjack leach, but he suffered an injured knee and could only play half a game. england gave up a first date deficit of 190. they had never previously won with a deficit of more than a hundred. but they turned it around. ollie pope's 190 more than a hundred. but they turned it around. ollie pope's190 61 of the greatest innings ever played by english batsman overseas, and then hartley transform from the man who struggled with the ball early on in his debut to take seven for 62, the first england spinner to take seven wickets on his test debut since the greatjim laker in 1948, and when you are making comparisons to those sorts of names, you know that england really have pulled off something special. but before this game, ben stokes said even winning one test match in india is a huge achievement, and it is, but winning achievement, and it is, but winning a series in india, well, that really is something for the ages. india
7:36 pm
have not lost here since england, actually, the last side to win a series here in 2012. england have been burnt before, actually. their last tour of india, they won the first test but went on to lose 3—1, so just because england first test but went on to lose 3—1, sojust because england have first test but went on to lose 3—1, so just because england have won this game, it doesn't necessarily mean they will go on and win the series. they have still got a huge task ahead of them, but what they have shown is that an inexperienced team, or a team have shown is that an inexperienced team, ora team in have shown is that an inexperienced team, or a team in particular with a very inexperienced bowling attack can compete with these indians, and the things that india will be very, very wary of is, they will now be thinking, when are we safe against england? what can this team achieve? if you lose a test after you have ta ken if you lose a test after you have taken a first—innings lead of 190, you will always be very, very wary of what the opposition can pull off, and india will carry those scars for and india will carry those scars for a little while, i think. to another historic cricketing result as west indies pulled off a shock win in australia
7:37 pm
for their first test victory in the country since 1997. the home side went into day four in brisbane well on their way to reaching their target of 216, but shamarjoseph, despite an injured toe, took seven of the remaining eight wickets in just his second test match to take the windies to an eight—run win. great scenes! the tourists finish the series level, having taken an understrength side to australia. great celebrations! let's move onto the action from the fa cup, wherejurgen klopp guided his liverpool side into the fifth round with a 5—2 win over norwich in his first game since announcing he would leave the club at the end of the season. elsewhere, manchester united survived a scared against survived a scare against league two's newport county to also progress. andy swiss watched the action. it seems no contest. newport county are some 73 league places below
7:38 pm
manchester united. but who fancies an upset? well, united clearly didn't come and when bruno fernandes helped put them 2—0 up bruno fernandes helped put them 2—0 up in a flash, it seemed very much business as usual, but the fa cup can do funny things. that is a hit by maurice! i say! what a goal! a blast from bryn morris, and suddenly, newport*s amber army had hoped. and after the break, guess what? it hoped. and after the break, guess what? , hoped. and after the break, guess what?- 00! _ what? it is in! 00! will evans, - what? it is in! 00! will evans, former what? it is in! 00! - will evans, former dairy what? it is in! 00! _ will evans, former dairy farmer, milking the moment. newport, remarkably, work level. but late goals from anthony and rasmus hoyland saw united through. 4- rasmus hoyland saw united through. 4— to the score. but goodness, they were given a scare. no such dramas for liverpool, meanwhile, as they eased past norwich 5—2. juergen klopp's long goodbye is to some start. yes, quite the emotional 48 hours, i'm sure, for the liverpool manager. let's get some reaction from him now
7:39 pm
to that victory. very emotional. ijust have to make sure that i don't get on that side of it. i pull myself together, if you want. but of course, in the games, we need to be warriors, and not celebrate the old man on the sidelines! so that's what we need, atmosphere, and people know that. so today, good first match after the news. now we get used to it. the early kick off between west brom and wolves was marred by scenes of crowd disorder in the black country derby at the hawthorns. play had to be halted for 38 minutes and players were ushered off the pitch. fighting erupted close to the area in the stands reserved for the players' families, while missiles were also thrown by both sets of supporters following the visitors' second goal in the 78th minute. as stewards and police attempted to restore order, west brom defender kyle bartley was spotted emerging from that area of the ground with a child in his arms. another supporter was escorted out of a home area with blood streaming down his face as medical staff
7:40 pm
tried to stem a wound to the top of his head. police, the fa and the club are investigating. it was the first match between the two sides in front of fans since 2012. wolves had taken a first—half lead through pedro neto. matheus cunha then struck for their second in the 78th minute. play resumed after more than half an hour of a stoppage, and the tie finished 2—0 to wolves, who progress to the fifth round. we shouldn't be talking about stuff like that in 2024. everyone should be able to come to the football, behave themselves enjoy it for what it is, two teams trying to win a game, enjoy it, accept winning and losing and go home. so, yeah, really disappointing, because i should be talking to you about winning a derby away from home that we have not won
7:41 pm
for 28 years and how good everyone was, but as i say, most important thing is, i hope everyone is ok. watching the reaction of the people in charge, _ watching the reaction of the people in charge, the managers, it was good, _ in charge, the managers, it was good, and — in charge, the managers, it was good, and that's why our more serious — good, and that's why our more serious incident didn't happen then the one _ serious incident didn't happen then the one we — serious incident didn't happen then the one we were watching. unfortunately, the game was interrupted by this incident, and now, _ interrupted by this incident, and now. in— interrupted by this incident, and now, in terms of the atmosphere that our fans_ now, in terms of the atmosphere that our fans created, we want to talk about _ our fans created, we want to talk about this — our fans created, we want to talk about this aspect, that of course, we are _ about this aspect, that of course, we are disappointed of this. elsewhere... watford and southampton will have to do it all again after a 1—1 draw at vicarage road. matheus martin's clever free kick handed the hornets a 5th minute lead, but stuart armstrong's late deflected effort earned southampton a replay. in the women's super league, arsenal kept pace in the title race with a 2—0 win at liverpool. vivianne miedema scored her

first goal since 2022, as she continues her return from an acl injury. the visitors then doubled their lead soon after with a neat finish from caitlin foord, which sends the gunners back level on 28 points with manchester city. the pair remain three points behind chelsea at the top of the wsl. meanwhile, leicester ended a nine—game winless run with a fine goal from janice cayman from the end of the area at everton. the victory moves leicester up to seventh in the table, whilst everton sit in ninth. that have a look at the full—day's results. —— let's have a look at the full day's results. manchester city kept up their title chase with a clinical victory over tottenham to move within three points of leaders chelsea. nikita parris scored twice as manchester united beat aston villa, easing the pressure on manager marc skinner, who are 10 points off the top. and west ham struck a huge blow in the relegation battle with victory at bristol city. in the scottish women's premier league, rangers continued their winning run with a 2—1victory at aberdeen.
7:43 pm
they took the lead in the first half thanks to this strike from rachel rowe, and doubled it just eight minutes later. a second half goal from aberdeen wasn't enough to make an impact. rangers are now six points clear at the top of the table, and yet to lose a league game this season. meanwhile, glasgow city walked away with three points against celtic thanks to this goal, a cross—come—shot from fiona brown, finding the netjust 15 seconds into the match. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today. austraia will play saudi arabia or south korea in the quarter—finals of the asian cup after a 4—0 win over indonesia. matthieu pavon has won the farmers insurance open, becoming the first french player to claim a victory on the pga tour since arnaud massy in 1907. it's the 31—year—old's first season on the tour, and this was just his 11th event.
7:44 pm
thierry newville has won the prestigious monte carlo rally in the opening round of the world rally championship. he beat nine—time winner frenchman sebastien ogier by more than 13 seconds. britain's elfyn evans completed the podium. next to a captivating men's final at the australian open, where italianjannik sinner fought back from two sets down against daniil medvedev to win a first grand slam title. sinner became the first australian champion for a decade not to be named novak djokovic, rafa nadal or roger federer. jim lumsden was watching. the 22—year—old is the rising star of men's tennis and had already dispatched ten times champion novak djokovic. russia's medvedev was hoping for third time lucky after losing two previous finals. he has
7:45 pm
already spent 20 hours on court, six hours more than sinner, ants appeared fresh, taking the first set. sinner is a formerjunior national skiing champion, but slid to a two set deficit, losing the second 6—3. and then came the astonishing fightback. medvedev had beaten sinner six times, but sinner had seen him off in the last three meetings, and won the next two sets to level the match. the italian now dominated, playing aggressive, confident tennis, and completed a remarkable victory. having this trophy is an amazing feeling. ifeel grateful having this trophy is an amazing feeling. i feel grateful to have this here, but i know that i have to work even harder because the opponents will find a way to beat me, and i have to be prepared. a first grand slam title. more are expected. rugby union now, where gloucester
7:46 pm
beat sale sharks 32—20 in the last game before the english premiership goes on a hiatus due to the six nations. having won back—to—back challenge cup matches, hosts gloucester brought their european form on to the domestic stage. ollie thorley, george mcguigan, and charlie atkinson scored a try each. but have a look at this solo effort from ruan ackerman. the flanker picked his gap and charged through to defence from 30 metres out and ran it home for a brilliant try. england fell to a 69—49 defeat by 12—time world champions australia in the final of the nations cup in leeds. the diamonds dominated throughout the game, finishing with a 20—point lead, leaving the england roses as runners—up in the tournament. australia have won every trophy they have contested since 2022. now, on friday morning, jurgen klopp made the surprise announcement that
7:47 pm
he'd be stepping down as liverpool manager in the summer. so why now? and what next for liverpool and for klopp? it's all discussed on this week's football news show, recording just hours after the next broke. after the news broke. hello and welcome to a special edition of the football news show, is react to the news that liverpool managerjurgen klopp will be leaving anfield at the end of the season after nearly a decade in merseyside. he has delivered the club their first league title in 30 years, reached three champions league finals, winning one, and also guided them to a club world cup, a uefa super cup, the domestic cup double in 2022. and he says he is running out of energy. it is just the right thing to do. and i am convinced as well, in the
7:48 pm
right moment, because the club needs time to plan the future while we are sorting the present, and that's exactly what will happen now. from that point of view, the emotions will come out. relief is not there any more as well, because i knew before how i feel about it. former premier league midfielder michael brown is with us. michael, thoughts? i am still speechless, to be honest! but the timing of it, right at the end of the transfer window. could he not have waited till the first week of february? you could just see by jurgen klopp, his heart is obviously with liverpool now and he doesn't really want to go, but realises that to do this job to the best of the ability, he can't even have those doubts where he needs to take a break, he needs to spend family time. but now, it's about coming together to try to deliver a wonderful ending to the season. why do you think the timing is a little bit odd? because they are
7:49 pm
probably not going to do any business in the transfer window. it gives the players something to work to towards the end of the season going to give him a nice sendoff. so why not announce it now? yes, but let's say some thing happens with a player next week. you know, it is what do you do, how do you react with that? a player coming in might say, well, he was going to be the manager? why do i need to come to liverpool? i think as well, as you said, in november, when you start forecasting and looking for players, what you are going to get next season and he will be renewed in contracts, etc, he decided he will not be that person, so they can start planning without him, they can start planning without him, they can start getting everything in place, but it will be tough without a manager, without a player knowing, but now, it is important that it doesn't affect the good performances that we have seen. so, just how our liverpool fans feeling right now? chloe bloxham is with us. thanks forjoining us. i don't know if this is the right question to ask about how are you
7:50 pm
feeling? not great. i am usually quite happy on these shows, but it feels like the polar opposite. devastated and gutted. it isjust... i am stunned as well. yes, i am not having a great morning, to be honest. why is there such an emotional attachment tojurgen klopp for attachment to jurgen klopp for liverpool attachment tojurgen klopp for liverpool fans? i think it's because we felt like... it felt like he had all the morals of the city, he had all the morals and the values are liverpool football club. he stuck up for those who are a minority or those, you know, of the working class. he shares the same passion that the fans have. i've not seen a manager with as much passion asjurgen klopp has. he got us right on board from the beginning. it was obvious that we needed a change from doubters to believers, and from the very moment, he had us hooked. we brought a bought into his passion, but most of
7:51 pm
all, we bought into who he was as a human being. i thinkjurgen klopp is irreplaceable. i would have lost absolutely every single one of those players before i lostjurgen klopp, if i had to choose. but also, with the fact that the apparently announced this in november, hopefully liverpool have a plan and have been working on a plan for us to bring in the best manager possible, and for us to really hit the ground running with them. well, how do you replace the irreplaceable? there is one clear favourite, but he is currently the head coach of bio never goes on. that head coach of bio never goes on. at the moment, i head coach of bio never goes on. at the moment, lam really happy head coach of bio never goes on. at the moment, i am really happy here. -- buyer— the moment, i am really happy here. -- buyer tevet— the moment, i am really happy here. —— buyer levelaccrues the moment, i am really happy here. —— buyer level accrues on. lam enjoying i am enjoying my work, i feel that it is a _ i am enjoying my work, i feel that it is a challenge. this game is a challenge, _ it is a challenge. this game is a challenge, and we are on an intense but beautifuljourney, and i am trying — but beautifuljourney, and i am trying to— but beautifuljourney, and i am trying to do my best to have my players — trying to do my best to have my players get ready for the next thing. — players get ready for the next thing, and that is what will come. the next — thing, and that is what will come. the next one, i don't know.-

7:53 pm
if he is determined tojoin one of these big clubs, bayern munich, liverpool, real madrid, his former clubs, he is allowed to go and he is allowed to leave. presumably, if that decision were made, he wouldn't take it until the end of the season, given the excess he is enjoying with bayer leverkusen right now? he is enjoying with bayer leverkusen riaht now? . he is enjoying with bayer leverkusen riaht now? , , , ., right now? yes, but there is nothing ha enin: right now? yes, but there is nothing happening before — right now? yes, but there is nothing happening before summer _ right now? yes, but there is nothing happening before summer and - right now? yes, but there is nothing happening before summer and right| happening before summer and right now, he is of course on a great run. they are still unbeaten, which is... what a success, especially with bayer leverkusen, who have never won a domestic championship. so if he actually pulled off winning the championship for bayer leverkusen, actually, i mean, he mightjust leave at that point, because he would leave on top, and that's the best way to go. a big mike drop! best way to go. a bi mike dro! . best way to go. a bi mike dro! , ., a big mike drop! yes! right now, it it is like leading _ a big mike drop! yes! right now, it it is like leading the _ a big mike drop! yes! right now, it it is like leading the premier- it is like leading the premier league. think about it! it it is like leading the premier league. think about it! it would be uuite a league. think about it! it would be quite a way — league. think about it! it would be quite a way to _ league. think about it! it would be quite a way to 90- _ league. think about it! it would be quite a way to go. looking - league. think about it! it would be quite a way to go. looking at - league. think about it! it would be | quite a way to go. looking at jurgen quite a way to go. looking atjurgen kloppjust quite a way to go. looking atjurgen klopp just lastly, quite a way to go. looking atjurgen kloppjust lastly, he has admitted

absolutely. thank you very much for joining us. loads more reaction on the liverpool club page on our website, and if you missed tuesday's less than prophetic programme asking if they were title favourites, you can find that on the bbc iplayer as well. we will see you next thursday for our transfer live deadline day programme, but thanks for watching. goodbye. before we go here and sports day, a quick reminder of our top story. england's cricketers managed one of their best ever away victories, stunning hosts india with a 28—run win in a dramatic finish to the first test in hyderabad. india had lost only three of their previous 46 home tests, with england captain ben stokes calling this win the greatest yet under his leadership. more on that story and all the day's sporting events on the bbc sport website and the app. from me and the team here, have a lovely sunday evening. bye—bye.
