facing an india side who'd only lost three times on home soil in the past decade, england somehow turned a190—runfirst—innings deficit into a hugely unexpected 28—run win. before this, the biggest lead any touring team had previously overturned there was just 65, and that was by australia 60 years ago. england's vice—captain ollie pope was player of the match after saving the game with a stunning knock of 196, while debutant spinner tom hartley took seven wickets to force the win. england lead the five—match series 1—0. we've been a part of some amazing games over the last two years. we've had some incredible victories. but i think considering where we are, who we played against, the position we found ourselves going into, our second — second innings of batting was just be able to sit here now and say we've gone 1—0 up. i think that's a big reason
2:46 am
as to why i feel this is our best victory since i've become captain. a lot of players are quite young in the sense that a lot of players are quite young in the sense that a lot of these guys do play a lot of white ball cricket and also maybe don't get a lot of time to get to play a lot of first—class cricket as well. so they are learning and i think they are getting there. but, like i said, i'm a little bit disappointed in the first innings, where we probably left about 17 runs on the ball. well, bbc sport's chief cricket writer stefan shamal has been reflecting on that win. here he is from hyderabad. it's certainly is the best win under ben stokes and brendon mccullum. and that's a pretty big statement when you think what england have achieved in the two years since those two men took charge. but it also goes straight in the conversation for one for england's best overseas wins ever, especially when you consider everything that they put up
2:47 am
with during this game and before it as well. england were taking on this indian juggernaut. a team that had lost only three times in their last 46 home tests. such a strong side, particularly their spinners. and england had such an inexperienced attack. tom hartley and rehan ahmed, two spinners with one test match between them. england would have looked to lean onjack leach while he suffered an injured knee and could only play half a role in the game. england gave up a first—innings deficit of 190. india had never previously lost a home test when taking a lead in excess of 100. and yet, england turned it around. 0llie pope's magnificent 196, one the greatest innings ever played by english batsman overseas. and then hartley, transformed from the man who struggled with the ball early on his debut, to take 7/62. the first england spinner to take seven wickets on his test debut since the greatjim laker in 19118.
2:48 am
and when you're making comparisons for those sorts of names, you know that england really have pulled off something special. but before this game, ben stokes said even winning one test match in india is a huge achievement. and it is, but winning a series in india, well, that really is something for the ages. india have not lost here since england, actually, the last side to win a series here, in 2012. england have been burned before, actually. their last tour, they won the first test but went on to lose 3—1. so just because england won this game that does not actually mean they will go on to win the series. they still have a huge task ahead of them. but what they have shown is that an inexperienced team or a team in particular with a very inexperienced bowling attack can compete with these indians. the things that india will be very, very wary
2:49 am
of that they will not be thinking, when are we safe against england? what can this team achieve? if you lose a test after you taken first—innings lead of 190, you will always be very, very, very wary of what the opposition can pull off. then you will carry the scars for a little while, you'd think. staying with historic wins, and west indies have pulled—off a shock victory in australia — their first test win there since 1997. australia went into day 4 in brisbane well on their way to reaching their target of 216, but the windies* new fast bowler shamarjoseph, playing in only his second test and limping with a painful toe injury, took seven of the remaining eight wickets to take them to an 8—run win. the result levels the two—match series. 0nto football, and the fa cup where liverpool marched into the fifth round with a 5—2 win over norwich city. this was liverpool's first game since managerjurgen klopp revealed he's leaving at the end of the season. while the fans gave him a rousing reception before kick—off, his players didn't disappoint. liverpool will host either watford or southampton next

after the championship clubs played out a 1—1 draw. in the games, we need to be warriors and not celebrate the old man on the sidelines. so that's what we need, the atmosphere, and the people know that, it's absolutely fine. so for today, good. first match after the news. now we get used to it more and more. meanwhile, liverpool's premier league rivals manchester united survived a scare against the league two side newport county. hosts newport fought back from a two—goal deficit to draw level. they face bristol city or nottingham forest in the fifth round. this is united. elsewhere, watford and southampton will have to replay while the football association have launched an investigation into crowd trouble at the local derby between west bromwich albion and wolves in which the match was suspended for more than half—an—hour. wolves eventually won 2—0. now to the africa cup of nations, where dr congo beat

the seven—time champions egypt to a place in the quarterfinals after a thrilling penalty shoot out. the match ended 1—1 in normal time. the pharaohs of course missing their talisman mo salah, who's injured. egypt then found themselves down to ten men in extra time when mohamed hamdi was sent off for a second yellow card, and when neither team could score again — the match went to penalties — 18 of them in total, as both sides missed once in the first five spot kicks. so it went to sudden death and all the way to the goalkeepers. dr congo's goalie lionel mpasi finally succeeded in finding the net for a memorable 8—7 win and a place in the last eight of the tournament. earlier, guinea scored with the last kick of the game to end the giant—killing run of equatorial guinea and also book themselves a slot in the quarterfinals. mohamed bayo's glancing header in the eighth minute of added time was the only goal after equatorial guinea, who were down to ten men in the second half, missed a penalty, leaving the guinea fans delighted.

we are with that guinea team. we thank them for all that they have done for the country. very, very good for the people. we are very supportive from guinea. it's like we play in guinea now. we know who is the real guinea and the real guinea is guinea conakry. i we are strong, we are united. we win. we will give everything to score and to win the next match and next match. cheering still with football, and australia set up a tasty asian cup quarterfinal clash against either south korea or saudi arabia with a 4—0 win over a spirited but limited indonesia on sunday. two goals in the first half put graham arnold's side on their way. craig goodwin volleying in a rebound on 89 minutes for 3—0. defender harry souttar made it four in stoppage time. it was australia's third clean sheet in four matches. the day's other match went to penalties

after the uae equalised against tajikistan in the 95th minute — khalifa al hammadi the scorer. extra time failed to break the deadlock, but tajikistan who had the advantage. alisher shukurov with the winner from the spot. they'll play iraq orjordan in the next round. today was very difficult. and don't forget, we get in the 94 minutes as 1—1 normal mental, you are breaking down, but we are coming still back and hold it and i must make the players a big compliment that we fight and on the penalties. be honestly sure your team is the best player for me because he saved this penalty. but it's not the first time. jannik sinner says he's ready for all the pressure and expectation that comes with being a grand slam tennis champion. he staged an incredible comeback to win the australian open on sunday, beating daniil medvedev in the final in melbourne. it was another bitter experience for medvedev, who also blew a two—set lead against rafael nadal

in the 2022 final. sinner is the first italian ever to win the trophy and the first player for a decade to win it who isn't called djokovic, nadal or federer. golf now. hometown favourite nelly korda produced a stunning finish to win the lpga drive—0n championship in bradenton, florida. leading by four going into the final round, korda dropped five shots in herfirst 16 holes on sunday, but she made eagle on the 17th, then this approach set up a birdie on the 18th to force a play—off with lydia ko. and at the second extra hole, a par was enough to give the world number four another victory on the lpga tour. that's it from me. but there's much more on the bbc sport website and app, including the latest from the nfl play—offs to decide next month's super bowl. goodbye.

hello there. we did expect it to get a bit warmer today, but it may well turn out to be a record—breaking day with some sunshine and a southerly wind ahead of a band of rain. in highland scotland, temperatures reached close to 20 degrees earlier on, and that would smash the previous january temperature record in the uk. now, the winds are dropping, actually, and the temperature is going to be dropping too. this band of rain moving through scotland and northern ireland is heading into northern parts of england and wales. and following on from that, in the lighter winds, we're getting into colder air — so much so that in northern parts of scotland there's likely to be a frost overnight tonight, whereas ahead of the rain across england and wales, it's still a mild start to monday. but this rain is going to hang around in northern england and wales, heavy over the hills, particularly in the northwest of england. much of scotland and northern ireland likely to be dry with some sunshine, lighter winds but much colder than today.
2:56 am
temperatures typically 7 or 8 degrees, whereas where it's dry across the midlands and southern england, it's still mild, temperatures of 1a, maybe 15 degrees. now, it's notjust rain that we're going to see, though, on monday. after dark, there could be some snow in the southern uplands leading to icy conditions by tuesday morning, by which point that area of low pressure will have taken the wet weather away and we're left with a cloudy start for england and wales. some sunshine for scotland and northern ireland will push its way southwards through the day. that very mild air is going to get pushed away, but 12 degrees is still possible in the southeast. but for many in the afternoon, it's going to be nearer 8 degrees or so. so it's turning chillier from the north. but if we look to the north again by the middle part of the week, we've got more isobars, some weather fronts. it's turning wet and windy, particularly in scotland. widespread gales here on wednesday and across northern ireland, northernmost parts of england. the really strong winds
2:57 am
are in the far north of scotland, but over the highlands this time we could see a couple of inches of rain. that wet and windy weather in scotland will sink down into northern ireland. england and wales looking dry, the winds much lighter further south and some sunshine, temperatures of 10 or 11 degrees. now, the weatherfront bringing that rain is going to move southwards overnight. the rain petering out. chilly weather for a while, but then we change the wind direction by thursday, bringing in a milderair and also more cloud.
