hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm gavin ramjaun. tha nations league draw has been made — we'll have all the details — and which groups to look out for. super bowl 58 is just around the corner — we're in las vegas for all the build up, as the chiefs take on the 49ers. and we hear from harry kane on his great start at bayern munich — and the work his foundation is doing for children's mental health hello welcome to the programme — plenty to come but we start with football and the draw for the european nations league has taken place in paris. for the first time, scotland are in the top tier and they have matches against croatia, portugal and poland to look forward to in group a1. england were relegated
12:46 am
from group a last year, they are in bz and will play the republic of ireland, greece and finland. wales are also in the second tier — and have iceland, montenegro and turkey in b4. northern ireland are a division below and will face luxembourg, bulgaria and belarus. the group matches will be played across september, october and november. let's get some reaction now from all the home nations managers starting with scotland's steve clarke. it's a tough one, but we knew that anyway. listen, it was first time in the top group. well, obviously still a bit of a hangover for us from being in this league. so that's the first thing we we have to try to get ourselves back up into that league. i think it's a positive group.
12:47 am
i really do. we're quite pleased with it. i think we know all of our turkey, we're off the back of plane. and recently i thought the whole performance was was very good. we've got a very, very young squad at the minute and this will give them an opportunity, i think, to win games, give them more experience and, you know, help us develop the team further. we expected - difficult opponents. that's what we've got. but that's what we want to - we i'm always a great believer. if you want to improve, | you have to play against the best teams in terms of the games. _ then there are some good some good quality games and of course a couple of teams that we haven't played for quite a while and there have been some memorable games against some of those teams as well in the past. in terms of the other groups in league a. italy, belgium, france and israel line up in group a2. then it's netherlands, hungary, germany, and bosnia and herzegovina in a3. and finally spain, denmark, switzerland and serbia in all. staying with uefa. their president — alexander ceferin — has made the surprise decision to step down in three years* time. at the annual congress on thursday, a motion was passed that allowed him to stand
12:48 am
for a fourth term — the english fa voted against that but he says he made the decision to stand down six months ago. football's lawmakers, the international football association board, are to set to trial sin—binning players and issuing *blue* cards. sin—bins have been used at grassroots level for dissent. the premier league has already ruled out being part of the initial roll—out, with fifa saying reports of blue cards at elite level are incorrect and premature. some managers feel the idea could really help officials. we need to help the referees. the referees are part of the game and i think there are aspects that we can use in ways to to make sure that the games are longer, make sure that we play a lot longer than we doing now and then, that we give clarity to the fans of how to use the var because more than anything is how we can use now the tools for the referees. and that's part of those decisions that you are mentioning. this, i think is a positive move. for the first time in more than four years, england have named an unchanged side for their six nations clash with wales this weekend. the only change to the squad sees prop ellis genge return from a foot injury, to replace beno obano on the bench.
12:49 am
earlier, we spoke to captainjamie george, who said he's going to be very emotional leading the team out at twickenham on saturday. i think its special that it's wales. my uncle is going to be sat in the crowd and like my probably my earliest memory is you know he loved watching that england—wales game, he's a very passionate england fan and you know, i think for me being at twickenham. singing the anthem, walking out. love, as you know, like that walk—out is going to be a very emotional situation for me. i'm quite an emotional bloke as it is. very, very special times, mate. scotland have made three changes for the visit of france to murrayfield. all in the forwards. co—captain rory darge has recovered from a knee injury to start in the back row. injuries also see grant gilchrist and jack dempsey recalled. all the players are very aware of what they're capable of.
12:50 am
the game plan they like to go to and the opportunities that we have, we've had some cracking games with them in the last 12 months and we'll have to be at our best level physically and defence contact area because they've got a lot of tacklers in their team to fi next and silverstone has extended its deal to stage the british grand prix until 203a. its previous deal expired this year, but the 10—year extension puts it on par with circuits in austria, canada and australia in commiting long term to formula one well into the next decade. finally some tennis news. and hubert hurkacz is through to the quarter finals of the open 13 tournament in marseille. he beat alexnader shevchenko in straight sets to set up a last eight meeting with thomas macac on friday. wins also on thursday for grigor dimitrov, alejandro davidovich fokina, and zhang zhizhen meanwhile, spain's cristina bucsa beat britain's heather watson in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals of the abu dhabi open. she'll play top seed elena rybakina for a place in the semifinals. let's continue the countdown to super bowl 58, sunday's

climax to the nfl season between kansas city chiefs and san francisco 49ers. here's nesta mcgregor with all you need to know. the super bowl is here again. and for the first time ever, it's in las vegas. so what can we expect? well, here is super bowl 58 in 58 seconds. superstar quarterback patrick mahomes and the kansas city chiefs are trying to win back to back titles. bang, bang out to be a pretty good sunday. as for the san francisco 49 ers, they are being led by a quarterback nicknamed mr irrelevant. you see, brock purdy was picked last in the 2022 nfl draught. the chances he'd even make the team were slim. now he's on the brink of super bowl immortality. it's all happening at the second most expensive stadium in the world, the allegiant stadium. obviously, tickets aren't cheap. most are the selling for around £5,000.
12:52 am
these aren't bad seats. check out the view. this year, the half—time show will be performed by usher with an expected global audience of well over 50 million people watching. so that's it in under a minute, right? wonder what else there is to do in vegas. plenty of things to do there, nesta. finally — back to football — and bayern munich have huge match at the weekend — they go top of the bundesliga, with victory at unbeaten leverkusen, who are the league leaders. england captain harry kane is bayern*s top scorer — with an incredible 28 goals so far. kane's been speaking to students in the uk for children's mental health week — about physical and mental resilience. our reporter alex howell went to meet him in munich. welcome to munich, the home of beer, bayern and england's all time leading goal—scorer. good to see you again.
12:53 am
good to see you, too. now settled in his new city, harry kane tells the bbc how happy he is with his start in germany. when i made the move i was excited by it but of course a little bit nervous as well on how it was going to go. so i've been really proud with the way i've started. now i've got my wife and kids here since the new year. you know, they're settled in school. they're doing really well. got 2a goals, level with lewandowski and gerd muller, a couple of bayern munich legends. things couldn't be any better, could they? extremely proud to have those sort of records. it's not something i set out to do at the start, but once you hear about them and once people are talking about them, of course means you're doing something really well. i'm hoping i can even improve from the first half of the season. for all his success on the pitch, harry kane cares as much about matters of it. how are you doing? you allok? the england captain's foundation has partnered up with mental health charity bounce forward. what would harry definitely do
12:54 am
before he started a warmer. providing 17 schools across england with lesson plans and resources to nurture physical and mental resilience. being a father, i look at their future and the world they're coming into. and of course, with social media and a lot of online stuff nowadays, mental health is a really big thing and it's important to be able to talk about your feelings and what you're going through. so when i was younger, being released from one club and having to have setbacks like that, i had to show a lot of strength, a lot of self—belief, a lot of resilience in those moments. kane has had to show those qualities over the last few years with disappointment for england that the last two major tournaments, something he believes can change. we come so close in the last euros, you know, we've definitely got that bit between our teeth to try and go that one step further. but as always, as we've seen, its hard to win major tournaments on the international stage. but we're in a good place. probably more of an expectation this year to go far. and i know the fans
12:55 am
will be excited come the come the summer. with domestic, personal and international accolades up for grabs, kane is hoping lifting a trophy here will be the start of a year to remember. alex howell, bbc news munich. that is just about it from us tonight, you can get the latest sport news from the usual places, which are the bbc sports app and her website, thatis sports app and her website, that is bbc .com/ support. from me and the rest of the team on sportsday, thank for watching and we will see you again next time. hello there. a wide range of temperatures on thursday with mild air towards the south, much colder feeling airfurther north. there was some snow, particularly over the peak

district and over the pennines too — here's hebden bridge in west yorkshire. most of the snow came over the high ground. but misty, mild conditions further south. plenty of heavy rain, too. you can see that on the radar picturejust piling into the south of england and south wales earlier on through the night. lots of flood alerts in place here. there's the snowfall further north, most of it over the high ground, but some of the snow towards the south just turning back to sleet and then to rain with that milder feeling air. but still the risk of some travel disruption as we head into friday with an ice risk from northern england northwards and still some falling snow over the very highest peaks as well. the snow riskjust transferring into central southern areas of scotland, too, and some brisk easterly winds. so perhaps some more problems over the high routes in particular with drifting snow. this is how we're starting off the day on friday. a range of temperatures — below freezing in scotland, but very mild in the south. now as we head through friday, that warm front continues to push its way further northwards, just dragging in the milderfeeling air. still very brisk easterly winds blowing across eastern

scotland, northeast england. this should be falling as rain. but across the grampians and the highlands, we're likely to see some accumulations of snow, even to low levels from the central belt northwards, but it will turn back to rain. some early wintriness too, perhaps across northern ireland. once more, quite a wide range of temperatures — between four and 13 degrees celsius as we go through the afternoon, and still maybe a bit of wintriness, particularly across caithness and sutherland and across shetland as we head through saturday. now, there will be a lot of dry weather on saturday, but low pressure is close by and there will be some showers, maybe some heavier rainfall across the far south—east of england a little later on three of the day. but coming back up into that milderfeeling air, so most of our temperatures will be between six and ii degrees celsius. still double figures in the south. watch out for some heavy rain again across northeastern areas of scotland as we head through sunday. but it will be falling as rain. the air now a lot milder, some scattered showers elsewhere, along with some spells of brightness. and by the time we get to the end of the weekend,

those winds, brisk in the north, will have eased down somewhat, maybe turning more settled into the start of next week with high pressure building in. are bring in new newsday in singapore but we have us presidentjoe biden with a surprise press conference, so let's hear from surprise press conference, so let's hearfrom him starting surprise press conference, so let's hear from him starting to speak right now. i let's hear from him starting to speak right now.— speak right now. i did not throw up _ speak right now. i did not throw up any _

speak right now. i did not throw up any roadblocks, | speak right now. i did not| throw up any roadblocks, i wanted no delays, i was so determined to get the special counsel what he needed that i went for a five hour interview in person over two days on october 8—9 of last year even though israel had just been attacked by hamas and i was very occupied handling an international crisis. i was especially pleased that the special counsel made clear the stark difference between this case and mr trump's case. the special counsel said, several material distinctions in the cases are clear. most notably, after giving multiple chances to attend classified documents to attend classified documents to avoid prosecution, mr trump allegedly did the opposite. according to the indictment, he not only refused to return the documents for many months, he also obstructed justice by enlisting others to destroy evidence and then to lie about it. in contrast, mr biden

turned in classified documents to the national archive and the department ofjustice, consented to the search of multiple locations including his home. he sat for voluntary interview and in other ways co—operated with the investigation. now, i have seen the headlines about my wilful retention of documents. this is not only misleading, butjust plain wrong. on page 215, i know it's a stick document, but on page 215, the special counsel found the exact opposite. he wrote, there is in fact a shortage of evidence that i will fully retain classified material related to afghanistan. on page 12, the special counsel also wrote, on other documents, the decision to decline criminal charges were straightforward. mr biden did not wilfully retain these documents. it said i did not wilfully retain these documents. in addition, some
