by the guinness book of records, i found it too strict and cruel. it felt incomprehensible. but now, a new twist. the guinness book has relented. the condition that matches have to be shop—bought is now regarded as overly restrictive. like i say, we are happy to be able to admit that we were a little bit too harsh on the type of matches needed in this attempt, and richard's attempt truly is officially amazing. and so, all*s well that ends well. effort is rewarded and this is the biggest ever matchstick eiffel tower. it is official. hugh schofield, bbc news in paris. eight years! darren bett has the weather. the focus has changed from snow to rain and flooding in this picture
1:31 pm
was taken earlier in leicestershire. it has been a combination of heavy rain and in some cases snowmelt which has led to the large number of flood warnings we have at the moment, largely in the midlands and southern england, but the weekend looks like it should be a bit drier. the weather front is moving north, taking wetter weather into scotland. following that we had some bands of showers. the colder air is restricted to scotland today with temperatures rising elsewhere and areas like this in staffordshire where we have seen snow, we have seen the snow melting because we have warmer air coming over the cold ground, but we have mist, fog etc over northern england and perhaps northern ireland. the weight is sleet and snow, that is mainly across scotland, as temperatures are rising elsewhere they are a lot hotter, ii rising elsewhere they are a lot hotter, 11 degrees in the midlands this afternoon. colder still in scotland with the strong easterly wind and it could bring in as much
1:32 pm
as 20 centimetres of snow, above about 300 metres in highland and grampian, it is at high levels. becoming more confined to the far north of scotland through the night, rain elsewhere across scotland, for other parts of the country the rain should move away, sky should clear and it will be colder in the south than last night. it will depend on the amount of cloud and miss and fog. that should lift and much of england and wales should see sunshine, sunshine for northern england, northern ireland and southern scotland but we have wetter weather in northern scotland, not much snow and it will not be as windy. temperatures are rising in scotland, a few showers further south, much of them across wales and the south—west of england. the weather front pushes away the last of the cold air even from mainland scotland for the second half of the weekend. low pressure around, there could be rain here and there, rain
1:33 pm
threatening the north sea coasts and there might be cloud to start with, mist and fog patches lifting, showers across southern and western areas, does not look too wet, breezy through the english channel, otherwise light winds and temperatures of 8 degrees in the central belt of scotland and 10 celsius in the south—east of england. thanks, darren. and that's bbc news at 0ne. now it's time to join our colleagues for the news hello and welcome to sportsday this friday lunchtime. coming up on the programme: what next for christian homer and red bull, as a hearing into a complaint of inappropriate behaviour gets under way? more brilliance from the bat of david warner, but is it enough to beat west indies in australia's t20 west indies in australia's t20 opener in hobart?
1:34 pm
and there may be no super bowl for him this weekend, but lamarjackson still has something to celebrate as he's named the nfl*s most valuable player. welcome along. thank you forjoining us. christian horner*s internal hearing into a complaint of inappropriate behaviour is under way this afternoon. the 50—year—old, who has led red bull's formula one team since 2005, is being questioned by an independent lawyer. his future in the sport has been the subject of intense speculation since the allegations, which he denies, emerged. 0ur sport news correspondent laura scott is outside red bull racing's hq in milton keynes.
1:35 pm
what do we know about these allegations? what's the likley timeline for this investigation? what we knew at the moment from red bull pass back perspective is that these are recent allegations made against christian horner by a female colleague. we know that they are taking it incredibly seriously and they have launched an independent investigation. they are saying nothing more about what those claims relate to. we understand that the claims relate to allegedly inappropriate and controlling behaviour towards a female colleague. christian horner denies those allegations. we know that in terms of the timeline all that red bull are saying at the moment, bearing in mind that this is being handled by the parent company based in austria, they say that this will be done as soon as is practically
1:36 pm
possible. they are not really putting any more timeline on it and clearly they wouldn't want to rush it. everyone in formula i will know that the next season is just around the corner. whatever the outcome of this hearing, laura, the new fi season is just around the corner and what happens to homer impacts not only red bull but the sport as a whole. it really does. this matcher is overshadowing the build—up to the season. it is only last week that we thought new story could get bigger than the news that lewis hamilton was leaving mercedes for ferrari. next week here at the factory in milton keynes the new car for the seasonis milton keynes the new car for the season is set to be unveiled. christian horner was expected to have been front and centre at that but it is hard to see how you could do that if this investigation is still ongoing because quite clearly it has raised a number of questions
1:37 pm
and the speculation is furious about his future in red bull. he denies the allegations, but this has raised a lot of questions about whether he will be able to stay on as both team principal and chief executive and where he to leap what would that mean for the team this season? last season there were hugely dominant, winning 21 out of 22 races, and they would be hoping to pick up where they left off. if he were to go to leave a vacancy as team principal at the start of the season and no team would want that ahead of defending their titles. would want that ahead of defending theirtitles. but would want that ahead of defending their titles. but we have to let this process run its course. there are so many rumours going around the world of formula i. here at red bull racing there will be hoping that they can start the season and focus on the racetrack, but at the moment christian horner*s future within formula i is injeopardy.
1:38 pm
next to some encouraging figures from a bbc report. there are now twice as many registered female football teams in england as there were seven years ago. the largest increase across the period came in the season after the lionesses won euro 2022, when almost 1,500 new teams registered. england player ella toone says it is exactly what she and her teammates have been hoping for. i have seen it grow so much in the last couple of years off the back of two major tournaments that i have been a part of. it is grown massively. we want to continue continuing to do that, to continue to grow the grain end—user platforms as best we can to give young girls and boys that equal opportunity of being able to start out in their football journeys. more brilliance from david warner has helped australia beat west indies in hobart to take a 1—0 lead in their t20 series. the opener smashed 70 offjust 36 balls as the hosts made 213—7
1:39 pm
from their 20 overs. although they made a good start, the tourists fell 11 runs short, finishing on 202—8. there are two more matches to go. the countdown continues to super bowl lviii just two days away in las vegas, which is staging it for the first time. travis kelce will be back in a fourth super bowl in five years as the defending champions, kansas city, face kyle shanahan*s san francisco 49ers, who lost on their last trip to the big game in 2020 when they were beaten by the chiefs. both are looking forward to being back at the big game. it gets you fired up, man, and it makes you accept the challenges that you get presented in life. you know, going through a few of the super bowls, you can't plan any of them. you've just got to be ready for the challenge and the task at hand to be ready to overcome some adversity, be ready to finish off
1:40 pm
a football game the right way. there are certain things that you can't train for in the super bowl. it was the nfl honors night on thursday and lamarjackson was named mvp for the second time by a nearly—unanimous decision. but the baltimore ravens quarter—back admitted the award was bittersweet after his side were knocked out by the chiefs a couple of weeks ago. just to get this award, to be here for the award, it is an honour, but i rather would have been in the super bowl than accepting the award. but a lot of great players are honoured to have this award and ifeel like i'm one of them and i thank everyone who nominated me to win it. finally, eddie kidd was one of the biggest names in motorcycling during the 1970s and *80s, but in 1996 the stuntman was involved in a crash that almost killed him. it ended his career and left him with a brain injury.
1:41 pm
his family have since been searching for his memorabilia and found one very important piece in the northern irish town of dungannon belonging to record—breaking racer ryan farquhar. stephen watson has the story. among ryan farquhar*s personal racing collection, something belonging to one of his heroes. ryan acquired eddie kidd's leathers when he swapped a set of his own with a collector. i'd watched many of his jumps and you know, was always fascinated with eddie and evel knievel. when i was a child i had a, you know, the toy, the evel knievel toy. eddie kidd was a stuntman and a movie star. he doubled forjames bond and once jumped the great wall of china. he was also very generous, giving away most of his memorabilia until his accident. now his family are trying to recover it. ijust think it's, if eddie
1:42 pm
would like them back, you know, i think it's the right thing to do. it's something i'm really looking forward to. so we helped organise a special delivery to peacehaven outside brighton, where eddie is looked after by his carer, glen. all right, eddie? good to see you, boy. he wants a fist pump. i've got a wee something here you might like. a wee birdie told me you might like these back. i know you gave them to charity, so i think it's only right that they come back to where they belong. they* re need cleaned. ah, brilliant! you can see, they're quite a bit stained, but you have them back. 1978 is the last time eddie can remember being pictured performing in the leathers. i'm really pleased that i can give something back to such a special person that unfortunately has ended up with the disabilities that he has, but, you know,
1:43 pm
with the will that he has to live, not many people would be as strong as what he is. eddie, how much does it mean to you to get these leathers back in your possession? i am very happy. but they are dirty! really emotional, you know, just seeing the expression, the smile on his face when we brought them back, you know, it's a day i'll never forget. it's worth the journey over to bring them back to you, so. you can stay up to date on the bbc sport website. goodbye.
1:44 pm
hello, you're watching bbc news with me, frankie mccamley. let's continue with our top story this hour, that the duke of sussex has won further "substantial" damages after settling the rest of his phone hacking claim against mirror group newspapers. the high court heard the company had accepted an offer to settle the claim made by the prince. here is what prince harry's barrister, david sherborne, had to say outside the court a short time ago. as you know, prince harry, duke of sussex, couldn't be present today. however he has prepared a statement, following mirror group's acceptance of the remainder of his claim, and their agreement to pay substantial, additional damages to him, as well as his costs. i will now read that statement on his behalf. "after our victory in december,
1:45 pm
mirror group have finally conceded the rest of my claim, which would have consisted of another two trials, additional evidence, and 115 more articles. everything we said was happening at mirror group, was in fact happening. and indeed far worse, as the court ruled in its extremely damaging judgment. as the judge has said only this morning, we have uncovered and proved the shockingly dishonest way in which the mirror acted for so many years, and then sought to conceal the truth. in light of this we call again for the authorities to uphold the rule of law, and to prove that no—one is above it. that includes mr morgan, who, as editor, knew perfectly well what was going on, as thejudge held. even his own employer realised it simply could not call him as a witness of truth at the trial.
