of the one and a half million palestinians sheltering there. the un has said there is nowhere safe for palestinians in rafah to move to. the head of nato slams donald trump for saying he would encourage russia to attack any nato ally that fails to meet its financial obligations to the alliance. jens stoltenberg said it would undermine the alliance's security and put soldiers at risk. and final results from pakistan's election confirm that independent candidates allied to jailed former prime minister, imran khan, won the most seats. but the political blocs which came second and third say they'll work together to try to form a government. now on bbc news, it's sportsday.
7:31 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm jane dougall. six tries for ireland in the six nations — they're top of the table after beating italy. and six goals for arsenal as they batter west ham at the london stadium — declan rice scoring against his old club, to put pressure on manager david moyes. and, it's finally game day — the super bowl will get under way at the allegiant stadium later in las vegas. let's start with the six nations and ireland's return to the top of the table after an easy win over italy. they scored six tries in the match at the aviva stadium. and, despite italy's impressive performance against england last week, they failed to score a single point in dublin.
7:32 pm
it finished 36—0 as olly foster reports. # come the day and come the hour... three months ago, rugby super fan stevie mulrooney belted out ireland's call on prime—time tv. the eight—year—old from kilkenny brought the house down once again. come on, ireland! how could the grand slam champions let him down after that? they have lost to italy in the six nations, but that was before stevie was born. jack crowley scored his first try in senior rugby to get them going. the italians gave them a scare in rome in last year's championship. they were never going to get close in dublin. dan sheehan and jack conan also went overfor a 19—0 lead at the break. three more tries followed, sheehan at the front of the bulldozer secured the all—important bonus point. there was no letup at all for the italians. james lowejinked his way through and calvin nash capped

the most comfortable of victories. the championship now takes a two—week break. despite the winning margin the irish say they have plenty to improve on. wales, their next opponents in dublin, will be worried about that. olly foster, bbc news. ireland head coach andy farrell said he was happy with the result, but that there was still room for improvement. we got what we wanted out of the game, keeping them to zero is very pleasing. some nice tries, performances by individuals, etc. they are tricky enough to play against, they have changed the way they play, a little more pragmatic so you have to find ways to get in the ball. to an extraordinary game at the london stadium where arsenal thrashed west ham 6—0. it's their biggest away win in premier league history — and it moves them to within two points of league leaders liverpool. west ham on the other hand are now winless in seven matches

in all competitions. adam cottier reports. a year ago, arsenal were on a winless run that would prove costly in the title race. these days, they appear to be made of stronger stuff led by their captain, declan rice, playing against his old club. it was his corner that saw william saliba head in the first of arsenal's six. west ham's goalkeeper alphonse areola then brought down bukayo saka and the england forward's penalty saw him bring up 50 goals in an arsenal shirts. the home side haven't won a premier league game since winning away at arsenal in december and after gabriel had met rice's cross leandro trossard bent in a fourth and any hope of a repeat was lost. it had west ham's fans heading home before half time. those who remain saw arsenal unrelenting as west ham fell to their biggest home defeat in more than 60 years. saka's second made it 5—0,

and rice scored in spectacular style to compound the home side's misery. the celebrations were muted on this occasion for arsenal, but on this evidence, they won't be leaving this year's title race early with little margin for error. a big margin of victory for their fifth premier league win in a row. adam cottier, bbc news. arsenal's record premier league away win comes after their impressive victory over liverpool last week, with manager mikel arteta keen to keep the pressure on the league leaders and second placed manchester city. it shows the consistency it shows the consistency that it shows the consistency that we it shows the consistency that we have to hit and today we have done it. and now we have to do it again. the way we played and performed proofs we had it from the beginning and the team more and more shown a lot of quality because it is not easy to what they have done. i can't

manchester city are through to the women's fa cup quarterfinals after a 1—0 win at arsenal. the three—time winners city remain one of the favourites to lift the trophy again after laia aleixandri's winner at meadow park. our reporterjo currie was there. in the north london sunshine, one of these heavyweights would fall at the fifth round hurdle. the first half offered little in the way of chances but plenty of drama. an elbow to the face, a penalty shout — none given and no var to consult. and the rivalries continued to spill over. after the break, city tested the keeper, bunny shaw with the power, sabrina d'angelo with a save equal to it. and then the breakthrough. arsenal unable to deal with the free kick, laia aleixandri there to poke home. a huge moment. manchester city with the breakthrough. arsenal threw everything at city as they searched for the equaliser.
7:40 pm
at one point they thought the ball had crossed the line but khiara keating, city's teenage goalkeeper, simply couldn't be beaten. and there is the full—time whistle. it's manchester city's day. it's a frustratingly familiar story for arsenal, isn't it, crashing out before the quarterfinals for the second year in a row. for manchester city, though, well, their quest for wembley just got one step closer. jo currie, bbc news, meadow park. in the other matches, the holders chelsea are through after beating crystal palace 1—0. manchester united, liverpool, everton and brighton also go through. let's take you to the africa cup of nations now, where either the hosts ivory coast or fellow former champions nigeria will be crowned kings of the continent later this evening. the super eagles are looking for a fourth title, while the ivorians are hoping to add to their wins in 1992 and 2015. our reporter ian williams is in abidjan for us.
7:41 pm
well, i was here at the stadium for the opening match, which also featured ivory coast. now, that felt big. this feels bigger. we've got extra security, fans are being stopped and checked kilometres away from the stadium. and then early on this afternoon, having to walk those kilometres in burning heat. but it's still orange and white absolutely everywhere you look. that includes even in the media spaces because hundreds of ivorian journalists there, huge contingent that follows nigeria around international media such as the bbc. we're told this game is going to be beamed into 173 territories around the world, more than ever before. close to 2 billion people will have watched afcon at some point during the tournament. so fitting we've got such a great final. the hosts against three time winners nigeria who've been very tight during this tournament, very well organised and then of course at the other end of the field have the african footballer of the year. napoli striker victor osimhen — just one goal for him so far though, in this tournament, which came in nigeria's opening match. so can he change that tonight?
7:42 pm
and worth reminding everyone as well about the roller—coaster ride that ivory coast have been on sacking their head coach before the group stage was over, being dead and buried several times in the knockout stages and then coming back from the dead. it really has been a fairy tale. but i have to tell you, if you're thinking we're going to be full of goals and drama tonight, ivory coast have been in four previous afcon finals. they're yet to score a goal in any of them. all four have gone to extra time, finished 0—0. that is what, over 8 hours of football. they've won two on penalties, lost two on penalties. surely the same thing can't happen again tonight, can it? we will find out. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines. jude bellingham is expected to miss real madrid's champions league last—16first—leg tie against rb leipzig on tuesday with a sprained ankle. he limped off after scoring two goals against girona last night and the spanish club have not put a timescale on his return. scotland's scott jamieson produced a remarkable final round of 65

at the qatar masters, but six birdies and an eagle weren't enough for him to win the tournament. it was japan's rikuya hoshino who topped the leaderboard after a 1a—under par total. it's his first dp world tour title. glenn maxwell was in scintillating form in australia's second t20 against the west indies as they won by 3a runs. this six helped him equal the record for the most t20 international centuries, currently held by india's rohit sharma on five. staying with cricket, bad news for england — spinnerjack leach has been ruled out of the remainder of the test tour of india with a knee problem. leach suffered the injury whilst fielding in england's first test victory in hyderabad, and then missed the subsequent defeat in visa ka patnam. leach will fly home and england have no plans to call up a replacement with the third test starting

7:48 pm
fans frustrated, key players injured, form vanished and constant questions over the future of that man. just what can crystal palace achieve this season? and welcome to the football news show. in the last three months, only forest, brentford and sheffield united have worse records. they've not won back to back in the league since april. manager roy hodgson is the target for much of those dissenting voices from the holmesdale road stand, brought back last march with palace three points above the relegation zone. he kept them up. better than vieira and debruyne. not quite as good as allardyce or pardew. and how much hinges on these two? every jersey and michael ashley say 15 goal involvements this season compared to 31 for the rest of the team. bear in mind that at least he's been injured for half this season and essays missed a quarter of their games. while our man in the know, alex howe, gave us his assessment.
7:49 pm
things are getting bad for worse for roy hodgson and crystal palace after that game and the defeat at brighton last weekend. michael only lasted 11 minutes before coming off with what hodgson says is a serious hamstring injury. and that has really summed up palace's season. he's only played 11 games, but when he has played, he's been the star man and his output has been excellent. and the same with eberechi eze. he has another hamstring injury and he's had his own fitness issues. and after that brighton defeat, it did seem that it could have been the end of roy hodgson. patrick vieira was sacked after a defeat at brighton and with the fan feeling towards the manager because of the poor results and also their feeling towards the clubs. it didn't look like he'd make it to the chelsea game. now he's there long—term fans are feeling that things have stagnated a bit, money hasn't been spent in the right areas and now the football is in great. and with the key players out, it does feel very negative heading
7:50 pm
into the game against chelsea on monday. well, the former premier league midfielder michael brown is with us. michael, put us in that dressing room, if you can, when the results aren't going your way, when there's speculation about the future of your manager, how different is it? 10—3 on a saturday. listen, i've been in those situations many times with different football clubs, whether it's a relegation, whether you manage to just come out of it and it gets tense, it gets heated. and ultimately, the one thing is that's hanging over you is you need to get a result in the next game as that pressure increases and it's worry, it's not a good place on the training ground day to day. it's not that fun, the enjoyment you're going in after, the defeat can be tough. and when there's uncertainty around the manager and there's criticism there, you're waiting for some leadership, some statement about the club saying, well, he's definitely going to be here because ultimately those little cracks and you're thinking, well, those couple of i will probably like the manager to go and change because he's not picking them. and then you've got others who are thinking, well, i'm really happy. i really like what roy does, and we believe in what he contributes
7:51 pm
to staying in the league to keep us out of trouble, to grind results out. so all around there's different areas of it. they need a bit of clarity for me, that roy hodgson is here until the summer. as a football club, they're thinking, well, if we lose the next three, how do we come out and make that? we might need that reaction. so difficult times. i've sat here for so long and say, leave off roy hodgson there needs to be ultimate respect in everything he does. he will get you over the line. he'll shake everybody's hand. he'll wish everybody well at the end of the season and then palace move on with whatever direction they need to go in, see they need to go in. let's see what the palace fans think. then we're joined by matt watts from the team called palace podcast. so i don't think it's unfair to say that many palace fans are unhappy with hodgson. how are you feeling? yeah, i mean, i didn't. really want to be in this position, to be honest with you, because we all love _ roy hodgson. he's done a fantasticjob i for the club over the years, | but ijust feel as though it has reached a point in the last few
7:52 pm
weeks where change probably does need to be made. - he was brought in in pretty much exactly the same situation that you're in right now. he was the man to save you from relegation. i think you were three points above the drop zone when you sacked vierea last march. so why is he now not the right man in this situation? yeah, it's a really interesting one. i and i think it's something that| people outside the football club maybe wouldn't understand, - because if we were to make a change, l you look at it and you think, well, l you want someone like roy hodgson. but unfortunately this season hasn't | been particularly good, the football| hasn't been very good. and then in recent weeks there's been a couple - of particularly alarming results. | i think you would kind of associate | them with being very hard to break down, you know, grinding out results. that simply hasn't been the case. so i do feel that fan base hasl turned and i think we all know that it's very rare that - managers kind of come back from that sort of position. so just how close are palace to relegation then, and what does
7:53 pm
the future, short and long—term look like for them? we can speak to a man who scored more than 100 goals in two spells at selhurst park, clinton morrison, so clinton, have you noticed a difference in palace of late? have you noticed a drop off? yeah, it's been a big drop off. the results haven't been good enough, performance have been all right. i know they've had a lot of injuries to key players, but it's been nowhere near good enough. i don't think the fans are happy, obviously. they're definitely not happy with the chairman at the moment and maybe it's time to get on roy hodgson's back a little bit, but crystal palace are where crystal palace should be, i think. i don't think they have money like the top teams in the premier league, so it's always going to be a struggle. but i can understand the fans frustration with not spending enough money. do you think they lack ambition off and on the pitch with their playing style as well? oh, that's a difficult one, because, listen, when patrick vieira was there, there was a style of play he was trying to play out from the back. for me personally, i didn't want patrick vieira to leave.
7:54 pm
i could see there was good progress being made. and then roy hodgson came in and he kind of got the best out of players. and you know what it's like with roy. it's going to be like defending your numbers and play on the counterattack. and when they had someone like wilfried zaha, what really only said palace would will be all right, but it's going to be a struggle i think at least maybe in this report it might be out for a couple of months. on coming back for the last month of the season, which is a huge, huge blow. so as a he should be back sooner rather than later. then they lost my game. i don't know how long mark is going to be out for. he limped off against brighton, conceding too many goals at the moment. so ijust think they've got enough. i think there's three worst teams at palace this season. palace versus chelsea, then palace have a dreadful record against chelsea, i think 12 straight defeats now 12 games without a clean sheet as well. do you give them a chance? there's always a chance. i think we know the inconsistency that that chelsea have. cup competition. yes, getting results butjust
7:55 pm
as you think they're going to turn a corner they're not and this chelsea side and the young players that they have can obviously be susceptible to a poor performance and result. crystal palace will try and obviously get organised, be hard to beat. they haven't got that flair with the players missing and that organisation levels are going to be key and that's where roy hodgson comes right into his sort of top a game. for chelsea, the last two performances in the league have been well below par. those defeats against wolves and liverpool conceding plenty of goals. but that villa performance in the fa cup on wednesday, how much of a difference can that make? i think it's a big reminder again of the talent that's in the building. the pressure was on, had to go and get a result. and people, people looking at from the outset saying they're quite soft and got no real sort of grit and determination about them and then they proved they can go and get aston villa side as well. they were flying high, so it was a real psychologically big performance from them and i think now they have to build on it. but we've said it this season already and they keep falling behind. as always, thank you.
7:56 pm
my thanks to matt, to alex and to clinton as well. we're back on tuesday. hope to catch you there. bye— bye. if you want to watch the full episode of the football news show it is available on the bbc iplayer. all of the stories we have featured on the programme today available in more detail on the bbc sports website. that's all from sportsday. bye— bye. hello there. very pleased to say it's been a quieter weekend of weather for most of us, but there's still a lot of waterlogged fields and pavements out there, as you can see by this weather watcher picture sent in from hull a little earlier on. now, as we go through the week ahead, we might start off quite optimistic with some sunny spells around, but it will turn increasingly unsettled
7:57 pm
with the showers turning to longer spells of rain, breezy at times, but it will be mild, particularly through the middle part of the week. this has been the story today. we've had some nuisance rainjust clinging onto the far east coast of scotland and northeast england. some brighter spells and a few scattered showers out to the west. now, those showers will continue to feed in across west—facing coasts overnight. but with some clearer skies, temperatures are likely to fall away. it's going to be a chilly start to our monday morning. low single figures for many, perhaps in rural parts of scotland, below freezing, a touch of ice not out of the question where we've got those lingering showers. low pressure dominates the scene as we move into monday, the wind direction coming from a northwesterly, slightly fresher source and that's going to continue to drive in plenty of showers closest to that area of low. so northern ireland, scotland, perhaps northwest england as well. and some of the showers to the tops of the mountains once again could be wintry in nature. but there will be some sunshine elsewhere and those temperatures are likely to peak between six and ten degrees. as we go through monday
7:58 pm
evening and into tuesday, we've got this little ridge of high pressure keeping things quiet. but all the time this weather front is approaching from the southwest, that is going to gradually spill in more cloud ahead of it. so after a bright start, clouding over. a few scattered showers in the far northwest, more persistent showery rain develops across the channel islands, south west england, wales and eventually into the midlands, north west england and northern ireland by the end of the afternoon. 7 to 11, our overall highs. so as we move out of tuesday into wednesday, it's here where the showers potentially could merge to longer spells of rain as it stays pretty unsettled. the wind direction there coming from a south—westerly, so a very mild direction and that is going to just push that milder air further north across the country. so it does mean that we could see temperatures perhaps into the mid—teens as we go through the middle part of the week. but it stays pretty unsettled for many of us.
