as it was finishing, police say then as it was finishing, police say shots were fired west of union station, nearthe shots were fired west of union station, near the garage, several people were struck, two armed people detained for more investigation, so we don't know how many people were hit, we don't know the extent of the injuries at the moment, but we do know multiple people were hit. two armed people detained for more investigation is a police. they've asked people, understandably, to act area. these are the live pictures right now. —— evacuate the area. earlier, there were thousand and thousand people out on the streets, there was open top bus tours, this kansas city chiefs, now a very high—profile american football team, won the super bowl, they won it last year too, they had star players, travis kelce one of them and his girlfriend, taylor swift, has
9:01 pm
brought particular focus and attention onto this team. and indeed on this victory parade. we have been covering here on the bbc for the last couple of hours. thousands of people on the streets, lots of celebrations, but as it finished, close to union station, police say, shots were fired near the garage there. several people hit, two armed people detained for more investigation. so these are live pictures, you can see there, security personnel with weapons, moving quickly around the area. and we have been seeing, over the last 30 minutes or so, the cheers of the aftermath of people, largely evacuating from the the aftermath of people. people were leaving, but police nonetheless asking people to evacuate the immediate area around the station, avoiding the garage area next to the

station, where victims are being treated, and clearly because of the scale of this victory parade anyway, the scale of the event, there were emergency services, there was a police presence as you would expect. just the logistics of organising and keeping it running anyway. so there would've been a large number of people on the scene very quickly, and kansas city pd saying at the conclusion of that rally, at the end of the victory parade, shots fired, several people struck, two armed people detained. we are going to take a look now at some of the footage we have from earlier off, so as people were leaving, there was a sense that something was not quite right. so, let's show you one bit of footage from earlier are now where a reporter was there, the camera was rolling, being reporting on the celebrations and the victory parade, but then getting a sense that
9:03 pm
something was not quite right. let's take a look at that. here, you can see the reporter turning around, knowing something has changed. something has happened. guys, guys, guys, guys, guys! something's going on! something's going on, guys! so, you get a sense there from the turn of voice that that reporting that he was doing on the victory parade and the celebrations and the j°y parade and the celebrations and the joy for kansas city chiefs and their supporters, something had changed, something was going on, and indeed it was. just a little earlier, we got the latest from our correspondent tom bateman. what we know is this is — correspondent tom bateman. what we know is this is a _ correspondent tom bateman. what we know is this is a huge _ correspondent tom bateman. what we know is this is a huge event _ correspondent tom bateman. what we know is this is a huge event that - know is this is a huge event that takes place in kansas city, the
9:04 pm
second year running that it has happened. pictures from a little earlier on in the day showed a whole series of open top buses, moving through these very large crowds, and then a big part of the event and union station there. as you have been reporting, the police say that at the conclusion of the rally, there were shots fired west of union station, near, they say, the garage, and several people in their words were struck. they are talking about two armed people being detained for more investigation. but some of the images we are showing, or appearing to show, from a live shot earlier on, people running, some scenes of panic, close to the station there. the police have said that they are trying to evacuate the station itself and they are working to try to do that, and in the meantime, the parking garage that they have talked about is being used to facilitate the treatment of shooting victims.
9:05 pm
so, clearly, a significant incident. but we don't know, crucially, yet is about the exact numbers involved, the numbers of people struck. they are just saying, as the numbers of people struck. they arejust saying, as i mentioned, that there are victims and that they have those two people detained at the moment for investigation, but a lot of the detail still emerging. thanks to tom for that. speaking to him just a moment ago. those pictures were from just a moment ago. let's go to the live feed we are getting from kansas city, missouri right now, and you can see the flashing lights there, lots of police and as i was mentioning, big police and as i was mentioning, big police present there anyway because of the scale of the event of the sides of the crowds, the weather apparently unseasonably warm, so more people out on the streets. some of the schools, at least, were close, so people could come out to celebrate the super bowl win and on top of that, even more people would
9:06 pm
have been out there because of simply the profile of the kansas city chiefs, it really has exploded over the past couple of seasons. patrick mahomes, their star quarterback, one reason, winning the super bowl, this year and last year, but also the collision of sport into liberty, travis kelce, one of the great players for the chiefs, also happens to be the boyfriend of taylor swift, pop star, a whole new world of fans brought in, of the nfl, american football but specifically the kansas city chiefs, of this —— so —— so this moment a few hours ago was a big moment. as the victory parade was wrapping up, as he was finishing, shots were fired to the west of union station, as people relieving the area. those shots were fired —— people relieving the area. multiple people were hit, we don't know how many and we don't know the
9:07 pm
extent of the injuries. police have said that two armed people were detained for more investigation as they were asking people to understandably evacuate the area quickly and safely. and you can see with these live pictures now, there are plenty of armed personnel still at the scene for obvious reasons. so we are still waiting for more details from the police specifically, as we do get any updates from them, of course, will bring them straight to you, in the meantime let's bring in our panel with us for the next hour or so on the context, susie boniface from the daily mirror, columnist, also known as the fleet street fox, and brian stelter, journalist and author based in the us. good to see you. i am sorry i it is under these circumstances. can i ask you straightaway what you're hearing there, what your reaction is what we've seen in kansas city? sadly, it is a day that —
9:08 pm
we've seen in kansas city? sadly, it is a day that ends _ we've seen in kansas city? sadly, it is a day that ends y, which - we've seen in kansas city? sadly, it is a day that ends y, which means l we've seen in kansas city? sadly, it| is a day that ends y, which means is a day of mass injury in the united states, another mass shooting, and i think people in other countries look at this and say, why can't america solve its uniquely, medically and ship with gun violence? something like today, the chiefs parade, we hear about two armed in visuals possibly being detained, you wonder about a gang rivalry, you wonder about a gang rivalry, you wonder about that —— two armed individuals. we don't even know the current casualty count because they were apparently so many people injured and some of them are walking themselves to the hospital, so that may be why we don't have an actual number yet of casualties, but from the video i have seen from the scene, people trying to do cpr on wounded individuals who are pleading out, this is a very serious incident in kansas city, and it underscores that problematic relationship that this country has with these weapons —— who are bleeding out. the number of police that were on scene for the parade, i want to point out, the
9:09 pm
number of law enforcement. you have armed police who look like they are members of the military, in fatigues, so you often times hear an argument when it comes to gun violence of let's have more police, let's add more police, add more protection, and yet when you have an event like this, an incident like this, where there are lots of security guards and lots of law enforcement around, these weapons are so powerful, they can still hurt so many people so quickly, before the please can even intervene. that i think is the grim reality, as we see another mass shooting in the us stop what brian, can just see another mass shooting in the us stop what brian, canjust remind us the people will be aware of the cadiz city chiefs now, who simply were not —— kansas city chiefs, after the explosion popularity across the world of this team and this sport. this is the new american football dynasty. they would like to win a
9:10 pm
third year in a row next season. but the celebrity of patrick mahomes, the celebrity of patrick mahomes, the quarterback, of travis kelce, taylor swift's boyfriend, what an interesting parallel. taylor stuff was not there today. a lot of people wondered if she was going to go to her boyfriend's syllable tory parade. she is off to australia, her world tour. australia, an example of a country who made sweeping changes to the gun laws after a horrible incident there decades ago at this point for stub when it comes to the chiefs, to the nfl, there's nothing there in the united states. i am assigned to hard plane sometimes and other places because football in this country, american football, is so massive and it is intact, the television rating for the super bowl on sunday night was the highest television, highest rated television eventin television, highest rated television event in american history on a single network, people compared to the moon landing, but i was on every channel, so football could use a growing popular to in the us, it is
9:11 pm
one of the reasons why so many people would turn out for a big celebration in kansas city today. extraordinary, and from the scenes earlier on, we can see the streets absolute pack, the open top bus tour, the confetti raining down, the stage — it was a huge celebration, a huge event. but unfortunately, this seems to be the conclusion. just to remind you, if you are just tuning in, we have from kansas city police department that at the end of this parade, shots fired west of union station near the garage, several people hit, two armed people detained for more investigation. let's bring in, if you can hear me, just your reaction to what we are watching, susie? i just your reaction to what we are watching, susie?— just your reaction to what we are watching, susie? i have heard barely an of it, watching, susie? i have heard barely any of it. so — watching, susie? i have heard barely any of it. so i — watching, susie? i have heard barely any of it, so i cannot _ watching, susie? i have heard barely any of it, so i cannot give _ watching, susie? i have heard barely any of it, so i cannot give you - watching, susie? i have heard barely any of it, so i cannot give you much. any of it, so i cannot give you much reaction except a general reaction to the fact that, yes, another shooting _ to the fact that, yes, another shooting in america. it is not

9:13 pm
so, that was from a little earlier on, clearly the reporter recognising people running, the atmosphere had changed, something was different. these pictures also from earlier on. and again give you a sense of lease there, security personnel, heading in one direction, towards that station, it seems, and then we see the camera panned across in a moment and we see lots of red, lots of kansas city chiefs fans, the team is in red, so lots of people in red tops and jumpers and we see them moving around as the tv trucks were there. you can see, covering the victory parade, obviously, and as the camera starts ago around, we get a sense, people were leaving, although it had finished, the stage was empty at that point, people were, there you go, running, because they got a sense that something was
9:14 pm
not right too, even if most will not have known exact details of what had happened. they are clearly running away from the station. but you get a sense of the scale there of the number of people and again that image we saw a little earlier, people in black there, security services, running towards the station as the people in the red, the fans, the members of the public would come out to support their team kansas city chiefs on their super bowl win, back to back super bowl wins, start heading in the other direction. let's see if we can speak to our correspondentjohn sudworth, who is standing by for us. if you can hear me, just bring us the latest. can hear me, 'ust bring us the latest. * , , ., . can hear me, 'ust bring us the latest. * , ,, . , can hear me, 'ust bring us the latest. a ., , , ., latest. as you have been explaining, lewis, the details _ latest. as you have been explaining, lewis, the details are _ latest. as you have been explaining, lewis, the details are still _ latest. as you have been explaining, lewis, the details are still coming i lewis, the details are still coming in, this was meant to be of course a day of celebration for the kansas city chiefs, report suggest that up to a million people had crowded into

the city centre for these celebrations, but obviously marred by this incident. social media videos, again, the kind of thing you have been showing, on those you can see armed officers, weapons drawn, rushing in to union station, and as we understand it at the moment, at least ten people injured, we don't know how seriously, but of course those statistics, the numbers of people, the sort of day this was, there would have been families around, children had been given the day off school, and what was meant to be a celebration, a sporting occasion, once again overshadowed by, as we see all too often, of course, in america, an incident of gun violence. course, in america, an incident of gun violence-— course, in america, an incident of gun violence. john, 'ust picking up on what you _ gun violence. john, 'ust picking up on what you said _ gun violence. john, just picking up on what you said there, _ gun violence. john, just picking up on what you said there, want - gun violence. john, just picking up on what you said there, want to i gun violence. john, just picking up| on what you said there, want to be absolutely care about the details we are getting in here from the news agencies, want to bring you these

two lines. first, from reuters news agency, saying, kansas city fire department spokesperson confirms at least ten people hit by gunfire during the chiefs super bowl rally. so, that from reuters saying kids city fire department spokesperson confirms at least ten people were hit by gunfire. the afp news agency reporting this. one dead, nine injured in that super bowl parade shooting. again, quoting the fire department as the source. and a few moments ago, from reuters news agency, one person dead in the kansas city shooting. abc exciting the fire department there. we are starting to get some of the details of —— starting to get some of the details of -- abc starting to get some of the details of —— abc is citing. the initial
9:17 pm
details we had from the police department in kansas city was that two people about two armed people were detained, several people were hit by gunfire, now it seems the reuters and afp news agencies quoting the fire department seem to suggest one person dead, nine injured, in this kansas city super bowl victory parade, as it was wrapping up, as it was finishing as people were heading home, away, that's when the shooting started. there is a further breakdown here from bbc colleague. let mejust bring you these numbers, as i'm reading them. kansas city fire department tells the bbc one dead, three critically injured, five seriously injured, one
9:18 pm
life—threatening injury —— one non—life—threatening injury. those numbers from the kids city fire department. 0ne numbers from the kids city fire department. one dead, three prickly injured, five seriously injured, one non—life—threatening injury. let's bring in brian again. as we get those new details through, your thoughts? those new details through, your thou~hts? , , , thoughts? those numbers line up with some of the amateur _ thoughts? those numbers line up with some of the amateur videos _ thoughts? those numbers line up with some of the amateur videos from - thoughts? those numbers line up with some of the amateur videos from the l some of the amateur videos from the scene of the citizen videos that show cpr being performed, this was not something that was people firing weapons into the air in celebration, this was something that appears to have been a thought through, at least to some degree. in the united states there are these twisted metrics for mass shootings, for mass killings, it is because of the country's somewhat numbness towards the scale of these serious episodes that a mass shooting like this, where ten people wounded, only one killed at the moment, thankfully, hopefully that number were not rice,
9:19 pm
an incident of that scale, even though that is serious, that will change ten peoples lives forever, and yet if this did not happen in a parade, if this had happened in some other location where it was not the centre of global attention, this would have barely even made news in the united states. that is how twisted this countries relationship is with these weapons of war and it is with these weapons of war and it is not because the average american wants this outcome. the average american does not post up there are strong majorities of american voters who want stronger regulations on guns that want guns available in fewer public places, that want there to be more restrictions, but because of a minority that has controlled the republican party, these laws remain very permissive, and we will find out any coming hours if this individual or these individuals plural, we don't yet know, if they had obtained these guns legally or not. there were often times be very esoteric debates about who their identity is and whether they should
9:20 pm
have had the weapon, but all of that distracts from the larger point at order here, which is this is not normal, it should never be considered normal, and as i said, it's dozens of people that are affected. would have to say in this case because of how large this event was, tens of thousands of people likely heard the shots, tens of thousands of people likely ran and fled, you sure those videos a couple of minutes ago of people fleeing the scene. that has a trauma, that has a lasting impact on peoples lives in the same way that we might sexual has lockdown drills at school, we have to expand to her why those are happening. this is simply not an acceptable standard of life and yet because of that minority control inside the republican party, this is, this does continue to be the norm. * . ., ., ., norm. brian, i do want to come to the politics. _ norm. brian, i do want to come to the politics. but — norm. brian, i do want to come to the politics, but in _ norm. brian, i do want to come to the politics, but in an _ norm. brian, i do want to come to the politics, but in an election - the politics, but in an election year, this is pertinent, injust a moment. i want to pick up on some thing i thought you said was
9:21 pm
interesting, which was that event like this, with these numbers, if it had not had been attached to such a high—profile event, like the candy city chiefs super bowl victory parade, it would barely have made the news. because it has been attacked, because it is attached, does that mean therefore that it clearly will get more attention, clearly will get more attention, clearly we're covering it right now, will it make any sort of change, any more likely? i will it make any sort of change, any more likely?— more likely? i will tell you why the hither more likely? i will tell you why the higher profile _ more likely? i will tell you why the higher profile episodes _ more likely? i will tell you why the higher profile episodes do - more likely? i will tell you why the higher profile episodes do matter. | higher profile episodes do matter. and again, i sound like a cynic because i think many americans are cynical on this issue and often times mass shootings don't even garner national news coverage, is a mass killing of four over people that tends to garner even more national news coverage and international coverage —— for a more people. here is one of the reason why does matter that this happened at a very public event, at a celebration of ady city coming to like to celibate the super winning team. it is going to cause politicians to be pressure to say
9:22 pm
something, and most of the comments will be predictable, most of the statements, we have heard them a thousand times before, but it does matter for that reason, and also potentially for what i just identified about the mass trauma that comes along with these events. we saw it a few disco, over the weekend, in texas, at a huge church. there was a spanish leg which church service about to get under way and there was a shooting, gunshots fired there, and thousands of people running out of this church, praying and running for their lives. when you get to a place in america where so many families have a story to tell, so many people can relate to this experience, it does add up to something powerful and it makes it a more potent political issues. let’s more potent political issues. let's ick u- more potent political issues. let's pick up on — more potent political issues. let's pick up on the _ more potent political issues. let's pick up on the political _ more potent political issues. let's pick up on the political issue, then. we have an election year, most likely biden versus trump, the usual caveats, not certain, of course. how does the issue [and in an election

year, anything likely to change? certainly president biden has made gun violence a key topic, he has brought this up again and again, seeking legislative change, but he has suggested, he has argued that there is little he can do on his own, and this takes an act of congress. i wasjust own, and this takes an act of congress. i was just thinking about the other side of the political aisle, donald trump, the likely nominee. what was donald trump doing over the weekend? he was in harrisburg, pennsylvania, speaking to the national rifle association, and so, trump's fortunes, his political plans are aligned with gun owners and this... you would not! to hear much from him about something like this. however, it is notable that in new york right now there is a trial against the nra, a fraud trial against the largest gun rights group in the united states, that group in the united states, that group is a shadow of its former
9:24 pm
self. when lapierre, who led the group for decades, had to resign, i would argue resigned in disgrace, so you can see in some cases, political power for gun you can see in some cases, political powerfor gun rights you can see in some cases, political power for gun rights groups actually declining, though is happened is is because the nra is starting to decline, others have popped up in the summer axing more fringe, more extreme, and so instead of one big group you have a consolation of them —— and some are more extreme. donald trump seeks all of their support. it will be interesting to see as we go on here, how much gun violence does end up on the us political agenda amid other topics like immigration, the border and the economy. brian, thank ou the border and the economy. brian, thank you so _ the border and the economy. brian, thank you so much _ the border and the economy. brian, thank you so much for— the border and the economy. brian, thank you so much for giving - the border and the economy. brian, thank you so much for giving your i thank you so much for giving your immediate reaction, your analysis and your take immediate reaction, your analysis and yourtake on immediate reaction, your analysis and your take on the wider implications there too. just want to show you this social media message we are talking about star quarterback of the kansas city chiefs, patrick mahomes. a very simple message she has published their... if you'rejustjoining us,

police have said shots were fired in station, at the conclusion of that super bowl victory —— a very simple message she has published the latest we have, one dead, nine injured, from fire department sources in the us. stay with us. i am lewis vaughanjones. this is bbc news. hello there. there's been a lot of cloud around today and it's been quite misty and murky around some hills and coasts. few lucky places, though, did manage to see a peep of sunshine coming through that cloud. that was barnsley. and this weather watcher picture is in newquay, and both locations reached 13 degrees this afternoon. we had temperatures reaching 15 degrees in herefordshire and norfolk with a bit of rain and drizzle around too. but it's getting wetter, actually, this evening and overnight. and that wet weather will drive
9:26 pm
its way northwards up into scotland. at the same time, southern areas may turn drier later on. temperatures are going to rise actually in scotland overnight with that wet weather coming in, and elsewhere, temperatures really aren't going to drop very much at all. it'll be a very mild start to tomorrow. 0ur air originated, actually, from the azores, and at the moment we're seeing a southerly breeze coming in, bringing that milder air our way ahead of this weatherfront, which will bring some rain back in from the west. but we've got a wet start in scotland. that rain moves up towards the north and rain clears northern ireland but heads back into scotland. and then we'll see some rain for wales and western england, maybe some heavier bursts later in southwest england and the midlands. but ahead of that, lincolnshire, east anglia, the south—east should stay dry and bright, maybe a bit of sunshine coming through, and these are the temperatures we'd normally get at this time of the year. but this is what we're seeing on thursday, even milder than today, 16, possibly 17 degrees is on the cards across east anglia and the south—east, if the cloud does break up sufficiently to give us some sunshine. but that's still quite a long way off that february temperature record set back in 2019.
9:27 pm
now, there will be some rain pushing eastwards on thursday night. there's more weather fronts queuing up in the atlantic. that one's just going to fade away. this one will bring some rain eastwards during the weekend. but with some rain overnight moving eastwards, we're going to see the last of that clear away from east anglia and the south—east. and then we're all in the same boat. there'll be some sunshine coming through now and again, a fair bit of cloud, the odd shower around, but not very many of those. large parts of the country will be dry. so a drier day on friday, not quite as mild, but still those temperatures above average — i2, central scotland, 1a in the south—east of england. and we've still got that same sort of mild air in place on saturday. there could be quite a bit of cloud. best of the sunshine in the east, and out to the west, where we see that weather front that's bringing rain, northern ireland, western scotland and the far south—west of england. and ahead of that, it's about 12 degrees.
