let's start with the champions league, where the woes continue for bayern munich. after losing to rivals bayer leverkusen in the bundesliga last weekend, they were disjointed in rome. they went down to ten men and conceded a penalty, to lose 1—0 to lazio. bayern didn't have a single shot on target, and the performance will do nothing to help embattled coach thomas tuchel. ian dennis has more from the italian capital... they have lost back—to—back games for the first time in just over four years as they laboured against lazio. they had 17 shots during the game, but none were on target.
3:46 am
the match hinged on a penalty decision midway through the second half, ricardo sent off for a file on e 60, and cheer him up 11, converted the spot kick. would lazio stick or kick against the ten men? they seemed content, though pedro had to save light on. squandered a chance at the start of the second half. still a huge result for the underdogs, the pressure building on byron and thomas google. in the french capital, kylian mbappe helped give psg the edge in their tie with real sociedad. his goaljust before the hour mark put them on their way to a 2—0 win over the spanish side. the fa have nowjoined the premier league in approving sirjim ratcliffe*s bid for a minority stake in manchester united. it is believed ratcliffe hopes to officially complete his 25% purchase
3:47 am
by the end of february. the green light from the fa is one of the last remaining steps. but not the final one. ratcliffe*s stake will allow him control of football matters at old trafford. there are few people as central to their sport right now as ben stokes is to cricket. the england test captain will walk out tomorrow for his 100th match in the game's longest format... england and india are level at one—game all as the sides prepare for their match in rajokot. joe wilson assesses the impact stokes has had on english cricket since his debut 11 years ago. just one thing concerns england's captain, same as ever, wherever. how the team can win, could be his first test or his 100th. milestones, um... they just are what they are.
3:48 am
really enjoyed coming in oh, i always enjoy playing against india just because the contest it always brings, um... hammers it for four! this is the player that beat australia in 2019 where defeat seemed certain to everyone except him. and ben stokes has 011814 england matches already as captain. but us reflect on that. even the ashes of the summer at lord's, it takes it to new a level when all the pressure is on, all the time he's done this over his career, his 99 tests so far, so many memories and hopefully he can have 100 more, for sure. while stokes hopes to be bowling and matches again this summer, all of his triumphs and trials have been scrutinised worldwide but more observer in new zealand is more important than all the others, his mum.
3:49 am
i am really, really proud of the way he has grown up to be able to be honest with people, be kind to people and i know being captain has really upped the ante. basically eat his lunch and play sports. we always knew his journey in life would be surrounded by sport. the series is level, india must remain favourites. if they have some selection issues, they'll be facing england with mark lin boling and ben stokes leading. he doesn't care about milestones just endless positivity for victories and that is what makes ben stokes so dangerous, so successful. so a big moment for ben stokes. but a great opportunity for both sides to take the lead
3:50 am
in the test series according to the bbc*s chief cricket writer stephan shemilt. ben stokes has often said that h is a fair reflection of the cricket that has been played in the series. i would say that india are probably one more sessions but is not to say that england can't be disappointed that it's not too — zero. in that second test, to follow up that historic when in the first test, india were missing five first choice players, probably never a better time to play india in a test match in this country. now, there are only marginally stronger but this test they've been able to recall the all rounder, but they are still with barak coley, mohammed shani and kyle rahul. now it india were missing all of those players, they are still a fearsome proposition, they haven't lost a home series since 2012 and there is a reason for that. this is the hardest assignment and test cricket, may be the hardest assignment and all of sport. india will remain favourites for the rest of the series, but that's not to say that england don't have a chance. they do, and that's what makes these final three test matches so fascinating.
3:51 am
they do, and that's what makes these final three test matches so fascinating. jannik sinner is through to the second round of the rotterdam open on wednesday after a straight sets victory over home favourite botic van de zandschulp. in his first competitive match since winning the australian open last month — his maiden grand slam title — the italian top seed dropped just three points on his serve in the opening set. he'll next face gael monfils of france for a place in the quarterfinals. daniel wiffen has become ireland's first world swimming champion. winning gold in the 800m freestyle final in doha. wiffen is from county armagh in northern ireland, and took the lead with just one length to go. stretching away to claim his first global title ahead of australia's elijah winnington. wiffen will try to add the 1500m title. with the heats for that event on saturday.

it's just a piece of hard work, it shows what work you put into it every day in the pool, i've been writing out for every ten years since i was younger, it's really good to see it pay out as well, and i'm only 22 years old as well, it's becoming quite a young man's game, this long distance women, i'm happy that i'm here i'm in the top podiums so i'm just looking for more racing to come. to formula 1 now and with the new season not too far away mclaren launched their car for 202a. with their boss zak brown claiming they have the best driver line—up for the coming campaign. that's lando norris, and also 0scar piastri. he won the sprint race at the qatar grand prix and is hoping to keep improving. last season we ended the year on a high, and you know had a competitive second half of the year.
3:53 am
i think the aim is to continue that momentum. and, yeah, ultimately at some stage, to be challenging for podiums, and if not wins. so, of course, we'll see what this year's car is like and what everyone else has brought to the table. but definitely we want to try and stay around where we were. you know, in and around second, third, fourth quickest teams so that tight battle with ferrari and mercedes, but ultimately we are all trying to beat red bull, too. so hopefully in the not—too—distant future we can put ourselves in a position to challenge them. manu tuilagi is back in the england squad, ahead of their six nations match with scotland in just under two weeks. the 32—year—old centre has recovered from a groin injury and isjoined by hooker luke cowan—dickie and lock george martin.
3:54 am
england have won both their matches so far at the tournament, and chasing a first six nations title since 2020. four—time snooker world champion mark selby has been knocked out of the welsh 0pen by aaron hill. the 21—year—old irishman is ranked 66 in the world and reached the third round by beating selby four frames to two in llandudno. hill faces china's zhengyi fan in the third round on thursday. meanwhile two—time winner and three time world champion mark williams was beaten by scotland's anthony mcgill. the welshman lost by four frames to one. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye.

hello there. some very wet, very mild conditions around at the moment. temperatures reached 16.5 degrees celsius in hereford on wednesday and it could turn even warmer still, perhaps, as we head through thursday. but the focus for the day's highest temperatures will tend to be further east. there's a lot more rain to come in the forecast as well, all of these weather fronts just pushing northwards and eastwards as we head through into thursday morning. so temperatures rising unusually through the night across much of scotland. and we'll start the day off on 12 or 13 degrees celsius towards the south of england and wales. all of that mild airjust flowing in on that southerly wind from the azores.
3:56 am
you can see all of that very mild air marked in the deep yellow there. it's a very wet start to the day across scotland, the heavy rain clearing northwards, being replaced by this batch of rain just pushing away from northern ireland. a cold front sweeping eastwards, giving some more heavy rain where the ground is already saturated, but it should stay largely dry ahead of the front across eastern areas of england. now, these are the average temperatures for this time of year, just 8 or 9 degrees. you can see just how mild it's going to be through the day on thursday. in fact, across parts of essex, we could even see 16 to 18 degrees celsius, perhaps, given any brightness. that's still well off the february record, but it will feel pleasantly warm, i think, for the time of year. now, as we head through thursday night, that cold front continues to sweep its way eastwards. and behind it, there's some slightly cooler—feeling air, but only a drop in temperature by a couple of degrees or so. we'll start off friday morning, then, with a legacy of cloud out towards eastern areas of england. that's going to be clearing away.
3:57 am
a few isolated showers, perhaps, in the wake of the front, but generally speaking, i think friday should be largely dry for most of us. the best of the brightness probably towards central areas at first and then out towards the east, but also some brighter skies, perhaps, further west. temperatures really around 9—12 degrees celsius for the vast majority. on saturday, again, a largely dry day. the brighter skies really towards the east. it will cloud over from the west through the afternoon, with heavy rain by the end of the day across northern ireland. once again, temperatures will peak between 11 and 1a degrees celsius, and that's where they'll tend to stay on sunday. that heavy rain clears eastwards as we head through sunday morning and the rest of the day should be largely dry with some spells of brightness. perhaps a few showers again on monday. bye— bye.
