but the league leaders suffer more injuries as mo salah returns to the squad with a goal. rodri rescues a point for manchester city against chelsea. also coming up on sportsday... it's a winning start for the defending champion wigan warriors in the super league and we'll have action from the uk indoor championships — with amy hunt among the winners in birmingham. hello there, and welcome along to sportsday on saturday. a busy afternoon in the football to come. but we start with cricket. and england have a hugejob on their hands, if they're stop india winning the 3rd test in rajkot. a poor performance with the bat, coupled with india finding their rhythm, leaves ben stokes* side needing a record pursuit in india to pull off the unthinkable. patrick geary reports.
7:32 pm
india had 11 men on the field but weren't entirely whole. star spinner ravichandran ashwin had been called away for a family emergency. by sport's ruthless logic, england had a chance. one they contrived not to take. joe root*s scoop, the first shovel in a deepening hole. the game turned. jonny bairstow scored none. ben duckett, 153 a masterpiece, until the brush slipped. an innings ofjoy and one big regret. ben stokes leads this team by example, with hope and blue sky thinking. but there is a hitch. out for 41, no wonder india enjoyed it. a team without ashwin thatjust kept going. one ball later it got better. ben foakes the seventh man out. every glimpse seemed to bring another wicket.
7:33 pm
four to mohammed siraj. england all out, still 126 behind. now the opportunity was india's. jaiswal offered no mercy, smashing them much further and furtherfrom england's reach. then he raced to another superb century. at the halfway point today feels pivotal. so england trailing now by 322 runs, and from being in such a good position coming into the day, now find themselves staring at defeat, and going 2—1 down in the series. their star of the innings, ben duckett, appreciates risks that come with their style of playing. we didn't plan to have the collapse we did. there are options that this team takes and i feel like, if we are going to go like that, we would be like that every other day, because when you are playing this exciting brand of cricket, and always taking the positive option, you have to stay level. these things are going to happen and today was one of them.
7:34 pm
on the flip side i do think they had a very good day. they didn't have a very good day yesterday. i thought they bounced back today and were superb. a long way back for england then — our chief cricket writer, stephan shemilt is in rajkot, and told me where it went wrong. really disappointing from england. they had all the momentum going into the third day. they had reached 207—2 in response to india's 445. ben duckett was primed on 133 not out. don't forget that the sad news overnight, that ravichandran ashwin, had pulled out of the test match, because of a family emergency. everything seemed to be going england's way. but it all changed at the fall of the wicket ofjoe root. over and that sparked
7:35 pm
an england collapse. england found themselves just 319 all out and from there, india baked england's bowlers and fielders, moving to 196—2, he tried to play a reverse scoop to jasprit bumrah in the fifth over and that sparked an england collapse. england found themselves just 319 all out and from there, india baked england's bowlers and fielders, moving to 196—2, a lead of 122 runs, and that is already more than any visiting team has made in the fourth innings to win a test match in india. lets talk about jaiswal. do we know the extent of his injury? i think he was swinging so much to the boundary he put his back out. he had treatment and then decided he couldn't continue. he remains 104 not out. shubman gill is still there on 65. these two really are the future of india's batting and they have shown again today just why they have got such big reputations. unfortunate circumstances about ravichandran ashwin, who has left the test for family reasons. he will be missed with the ball.
7:36 pm
he will, but when ashwin was bowling on the second evening, england were going great guns in moving to 207—2, and without ashwin, overnight india recouped, they came up with new plans, and called the left—arm wrist spinner yadav and mohammed siraj really stepped up in ashwin*s absence. it is a huge mess from india's point of view. it is a huge miss from india's point of view. whatever circumstances he would be missed by any team, but they already had a huge lead and some skilful bowlers that stepped up in his absence. just looking at that huge lead, and what target india might like to set, what would that potentially be, given ben stokes* side would face pulling off the highest pursuit by a visiting team in india? england have made a habit of chasing large totals under
7:37 pm
the captaincy of ben stokes. a number of times in the past few years they have overhauled targets in excess of 250. deteriorates and we saw this in the last test. england were set 399 to win and they went about it confidently. but ultimately it was well beyond them and they lost by more than 100 runs. history shows that it is incredibly difficult for any visiting team to overhaul the target in this country. an enormous effort. india still have wickets in hand if ashwin isn't going to take part in the rest of the game. if they extend their lead and really put this much beyond england and go 2—1 up in the series. liverpool ensured they'll stay top of the premier league with a comfortable 4—1 win at brentford in the lunchtime kick—off. mo salah, returning from afcon duty, scored for them. that put the pressure back on their title rivals. but they lost more players
7:38 pm
to injury, including diogojota, with darwin nunez also going off at half time. drew savage was watching. the winning smile. pleasure and relief at a job well done but perhaps also counting how many fit players he has got left. the opening stages had been relatively even — ivan toney had gone close for the home sideand then liverpool found an opening — diogojota spotted darwin nunez, and the uruguayan did the rest. but nunez went off at half time, while curtisjones and jota had to go off before it — liverpool's injury problems are building up — although mohamed salah isn't a bad option to bring off the bench. he found alexis mac allister and liverpool were in charge. it was salah's first game back after being injured in the africa cup of nations, and this is what liverpool have been missing. they'll need him to stay fit for the title run—in. brentford hadn't been as clinical with the chances they created
7:39 pm
but ivan toney did pull one back until liverpool's place at the top of the premier league pecking order was confirmed. cody gakpo, on for nunez, punished some slack brentford defending, and who knows, goal difference could be vital come the end of the season. so that win coming at some cost then. goalkeeper alisson, and trent alexander—arnold were already ruled out and the injury list growing forjurgen klopp — who was still delighted with his team's performance. all the rest was positive. the boys played an incredible game. definitely the best away game we played at brentford. we take it like it is. as long as you don't know the extent of the injuries you are obviously concerned and worried. for me that is no different from the fans. we will see when we get this information. but as long as we have 11 players on the pitch we will fight and that is what i saw today.
7:40 pm
the frustrating thing today,. the first 35 minutes i thought we were brilliant, i actually thought we were the better team although we couldn't take the opportunities we had. then we made a mistake, especially, i would say, the first and third goal we conceded two disappointing goals. it didn't help, the mistakes we made today. that happens. you learn from it and move _ that happens. you learn from it and move forward. manchester city are four points behind liverpool and drop to third in the table after failing to win for the first time in 11 games. they drew 1—1 at home with chelsea as craig templeton reports. on the reverse fixture at stamford bridge it rained goals that was one of the games of the season so far. fans were hoping for similar entertainment here to go alongside the actual rain. the first real chance went to the golden boot winner. chelsea were proving dangerous on the counter attack but nicholas jackson was looking like a man struggling for goals. when

chelsea broke once more though, raheem sterling had the composure and the technique to give them the lead. city's second highest premier league goal—scorer coming back to haunt them. in the second half city had counterattacks of their own. erling haaland once more couldn't find the net. when he did find the target petrol which was equal to it. when it looked like city were running out of ideas rhodri, their man who scores important goals, scored another. 1—1 is how it finished. city lose pace in defence of the title. chelsea denied they must win. —— night wind. arsenal are still two points behind the leaders liverpool after a comprehensive 5—0 win over burnley. the gunners were two goals up at the break, through an early martin odegaard goal and bukayo saka penalty. saka added a third shortly

after the break before further goals from leandro trossard and kai havertz sealed an easy win for mikel arteta's side. we are really pleased, it is a really difficult place to come and they have been really competitive in the big games they have played this season. today we have managed to break them down early in the game and that made it look maybe a little bit more comfortable. the form the players are in, even 3—0, 4—0, they want more. it says a lot about how they feel at the moment. it is about maintaining momentum now. we have gone back and said, good performance, and you can look at details and key moments. but today all round was not good enough. in these moments you take it on the chin and don't say too much and you focus on the next game. it is important for us to get our momentum in the run of games that we have got left. a frustrating day for tottenham today — they were unbeaten this year. but defeat at home to wolves though sees them drop out of the top four.
7:43 pm
both wolves goals coming from joao gomes, the second on the counterattack, after dejan kulevski had levelled for spurs right after half time. gomes had previously only scored once for wolves following his £15 million move from brazilian side flamengo in january last year. the win moves wolves into the top half of the table. spurs drop to 5th. we are chasing, trying to be the best possible team we can and trying to progress this year to build something and that hasn't changed. we have got 13 games to go and our focus is on finishing the season strong and trying to keep developing our football team. disappointing lapse for the goal, similar to the one we conceded in the last minute against manchester united, letting them throw it into the front player. it is really sloppy so probably the only negative i could find in a 98, 99 minute performance. we were close to perfect, apart from we missed a load
7:44 pm
of really good opportunities that we properly should have done better with. proud of the group, tough place to come, fantastic team we have just faced and i thought we deserved to win the game. aston villa took full advantage of that spurs slip. they won 2—1 away at fulham to go 4th. ollie watkins with both of their goals, rodrigo muniz pulling one back for fulham, but they couldn't find the equaliser. villa back on track, after losing their previous two matches. we had chances to score, we were clean. i think we deserve maybe more goals. it was a tough match. when they reacted with their goal they had the chance to go but i think overall we were very competitive and our grand plan was imposing today in the match. newcastle united had matt ritchie to thank, in scrambling a 2—2 draw at st james park with bournemouth. dominic solanke put bournemouth ahead, before a controversial anthony gordon penalty levelled things. antoine semenyo took advantage
7:45 pm
of defensive blunders to put the away side back in the lead — but a stoppage time goal from ritchie, his first in the league for four years — saved the day for eddie howe*s men. lovely feeling to get the equaliser. obviously disappointed with the result, of course. we know how high we have set the bar here in the levels that we want to achieve. we didn't quite hit those levels today. when you score so late on like that i think it's one of those where you have to probably bite the bullet and be happy with the point. it is a good point when you are losing, especially so late, but for frustrated as well because the game was there for us to win, i thought. if we had the qualities to do so. theyjust eluded us on the day and bournemouth battled, we battled. both teams gave everything to win and with the goal coming so late for us i think we have to be pleased. a valuable win for nottingham forest — they're now five points clear of the relegation zone, after beating west ham 2—0.
7:46 pm
taiwo awoniyi gave the home side the lead just before half—time. callum hudson—odoi on the scoresheet again too, in added time at the end. west ham had kalvin phillips sent off. it feels good after a performance like we did. i think we play really good football. we were dominant, we were in control. we recover a lot of balls and kept a clean sheet. that is so important for us, and we played some great chances. i think we were the better team today. that is what pleases me more. when we went to ten it made it much more difficult and we had to take some chances. the game was tight. what you have to remember, nottingham forest are in a relegation battle, trying to get out of it. i was there a few years ago with west ham and i know what it's like. every game, every point, it's so important, especially your home nottingham forest made it tough for us as well but in many ways
7:47 pm
we have done a lot of good things probably the final third letters down, a decision or a final pass, not taking the opportunity when we got it. championship leaders leicester suffered a surprise defeat at home. they lost 2—1 to middlesbrough. the gap to second placed leeds is now nine points. their 2—0 win away to plymouth argyle keeps their promotion push on track. poor defending allowed italian striker wilfried gnonto to put leeds ahead early on. and they withstood something of a fightback before georginio rutter made the game safe in the second half — so leeds leapfrog southampton, and go into the second automatic promotion spot. in other matches — birmingham came from behind to beat sunderland. ipswich also kept pace with the automatic promotion spots — after beating swansea 2—1. wins too for coventry and norwich city, as theyjostle for a playoff spot come the end of the season. victories down at the bottom too for qpr and sheffield wednesday. celtic missed the chance to move three points clear

at the top of the scottish premiership — after they were held to a 1—1 draw with kilmarnock. a stoppage time equaliser from kilmarnock substitute david watson means rangers could go top, if they win tomorrow at stjohnstone. elsewhere, wins for third placed hearts, dundee, and bottom side livingston. in the women's super league, arsenal beat manchester united 3—1 in front of a record women's super league crowd at emirates stadium. this victory keeps their hopes very much alive in the title race. in front of 60,160 fans, they were 3—0 up before half time, cloe lacasse with the second there. the win puts them just three points behind the league's top two, chelsea and manchester city — and dealing a serious blow to united's hopes of a champions league place. two more games in the opening round of fixtures in superleague taking place this evening, where sam burgess made a losing start as coach of the warrington wolves, losing to catalans dragons. arthur morgs' try gave catalans a 111—8 lead despite being reduced to 12 menjust

one minute into the second half. a sensational team move to get his side back into the game but the wolves were unable to muster one last push as the dragons hung on for a 16—10 win. in the other game, the defending champions wigan warriors took full advantage of a first—half sending off to beat castleford tigers 32—11. wigan ran in five tries, liam marshall's second try of the evening putting the cherry on top of a comfortable win. i thought there was a few times where they hadn't particularly got in space unlooked for the past, where the run was the more threatening play. in the second half i thought we did that a bit better. i thought we did that a bit better. i think the tv camera won't do this pitch justice i think the tv camera won't do this pitchjustice in terms i think the tv camera won't do this pitch justice in terms of how sticky it is. it took us awhile to find our rhythm, but like most of the games this week, i thought our defence was the key to the victory. gloucester survived a late fightback to make the final of

this just in from mauricio pochettino and rodri who scored city's equaliser. . .. it was in our hands. we have to do better. we cannot let ourselves, the game, go in this way, just because individual things. game, go in this way, just because individualthings. i game, go in this way, just because individual things. i am game, go in this way, just because individual things. iam not game, go in this way, just because individual things. i am not blaming anyone but we have to take responsibility. we want to win the league. you have to come back, we have done it for the last six games. it is not always like this. sometimes the ball doesn't go in. but we have chances to win. at the players after the game, i so proud _ at the players after the game, i so proud we — at the players after the game, i so proud. we started to create the good spirit. _ proud. we started to create the good spirit. that— proud. we started to create the good spirit, that is the way we need to keep— spirit, that is the way we need to keep going. this is the way that we want _ keep going. this is the way that we want to— keep going. this is the way that we want to be, — keep going. this is the way that we want to be, our team. today there are good _ want to be, our team. today there are good days, good opportunities, to show_ are good days, good opportunities, to show that we are in this way. a

result to show that we are in this way. result that could have ramifications on the title race. that is just about it from us. you can get all of the stories on the bbc sport website. that is it from us on sportsday. hello there. good evening. some very mild air across the uk at the moment. some pretty spring—like scenes too, such as here in perth and kinross, lots of snowdrops. but for many it's been a grey, damp and drizzly day today. the ground already saturated too, in places, especially out towards the west. and there's a band of heavy rain sweeping eastwards overnight tonight — could potentially lead to some more surface water flooding. of course, very large puddles out there, as this heavy rain just pushes southwards and eastwards through the night, moving into shetland and lingering across east anglia and the far south east of england. but some clear spells developing behind, although temperatures won't drop very far,
7:57 pm
staying in double figures for most. a few isolated showers out towards the north and the west as we head into tomorrow morning. but a rather soggy start to the day across the south east of england, down towards the south coast as well, east anglia and across shetland. the rain will eventually clear, but it could linger on for some as we head even into the first part of the afternoon, but it will turn gradually more showery. cloud behind it, the cloud breaking up to leave us with some bright and some sunny spells. but for many, i think it will stay largely dry through the day on sunday. some isolated showers again out towards the west of scotland, perhaps western wales and northern ireland, but mostly dry. temperatures again well above the seasonal average, peaking between ten and 14, maybe even 15 degrees celsius. next week, though, temperatures will be dipping back down to the seasonal average. so it will be feeling colder, particularly by night. and it's still going to be rather unsettled. various areas of low pressure moving in from the atlantic, including another one on sunday night and into monday.
7:58 pm
and that's going to bring us some showery outbreaks of rain. it's all pushing its way further southwards and eastwards, gradually fizzling out. lots of brighter skies behind it, along with a northwesterly wind. and again, a few isolated showers in the north and the west, but a definite dip in temperature there, feeling a little fresher by a couple of degrees. and it will be feeling cooler, too, on monday night, with many of our temperatures widely dropping back into mid—single figures. there's another weather front coming through on tuesday. strong, gusty winds as we head through wednesday, with more heavy, persistent rain for the south of england. so here's the temperature outlook for our capital cities as we head through next week. it will be feeling cooler and it will stay unsettled. wet, very windy at times. bye bye.
