i'm gavin ramjaun. changes for england, ahead of the fourth test with india — as captain ben stokes contends with cracks in the pitch in ranchi. the london marathon levels the playing field — wheelchair and able—bodied athletes will receive equal prize money. and a first start for frawley — he's among the many changes for ireland, as the six nations resumes this weekend. hello there, and welcome along to sportsday. fast bowler ollie robinson is back in the england side for the first time since the third ashes test last summer. he's one of two changes for the fourth test against india in ranchi. robinson comes in for mark wood while off—spinner shoaib bashir

is recalled for leg—spinner rehan ahmed. india are 2—1 up in the five—match series — and the wicket could cause some problems for batters, with large cracks already appearing. we do like to look at the pitch two days out and one day out because that is how we like to prepare. you want to give yourself some idea or indication about what will give you the best chance and looking at that i think there will be assistance with spin. we look at the pitch and give our opinion but that does not mean we are going on with too many preconceived ideas. the pitch could be as flat as a pancake, who knows and if it is we will adapt and if it is more than what we think it is we will adapt to that as well. stokes could reprise his role as an all—rounder. this week he said he'd be open to bowling again, after building back up following a knee operation in november last year. our chief cricket writer stephan shemilt explains. you definitely would not

want to play poker against ben stokes. i don't know if you can remember back at the end of the summer he told us with a straight face that he was not going to play in the fifth that he was not going to play in the 50—over world cup and it turned out he did. he's been telling us all the way through this tour that he will not bowl because of the surgery that he had on his left knee in november and now and now he might. two days out from the match, wednesday, he had his first bowl on the net against batters since november. he said he feels ok, that the left knee that has troubled him for so long was pain—free in a bowling spell for the first time in as long as he could remember he said it was years since he felt like that. he was noncommittal. he said maybe he will bowl maybe he will not but he also told us that he still has to be careful as he manages his return to bowling from the knee surgery. qarabag have made the last 16 of the europa league for the first time, after getting the better of braga, in the play—offs.

the crucial goal scored in the final moments of extra time there. elsewhere, ac milan lost to rennes, but go through on aggregate. freiburg and benfica also progress. there were no problems for marseilles against shakhtar. roma beat feyenoord on penalties. sparta prague and sporting lisbon are also through. the last 16 draw takes place on friday. the celtic and former england goalkeeperjoe hart is to retire at end of season. he won two premier league titles with manchester city and was capped 75 times for his country. he has also won the scottish premiership twice with celtic. he'll be 37 when his three—year contract expires in the summer. manager brendan rodgers says he will be a "huge miss to the game." the london marathon will become the first in the world to offer equal prize money for its wheelchair and able—bodied races this year. all winners in the elite races will receive just over $50,000. david weir has won

the event eight times and in april he'll be taking part for the 25th time in a row. the london marathon is where my heart is. it was where i started as an eight—year—old, the mini marathon, the first race i saw on television in the 19805 and inspired me to get into this fantastic sport. at an early age we knew it was not a level playing field with able—bodied athletics and disabled athletics and now this is just a step forward in the right direction and i am so proud. i love the marathon. the six nations resumes this weekend — and ciaran frawley will start at full—back in place of injured hugo keenan for grand slam champions ireland against wales. there are seven changes from the line—up that thumped italy last time out, but frawley*s inclusion is the only difference to the side that began with a big win over france — it's his first six nations start, and a challenge his coach believes he is ready for:
2:50 am
we started the campaign with him over there in portugal, training as a 15 so it is natural for him to fill that position and he deserves his chance in that position. his first six nations start were exciting his first six nations start were exciting for him. he is always been in the squad and pushing and it is a big week for him. so it will be a test of his temperament but he is playing in a good side and i'm sure that he will take his chance. england have made five changes to the side that beat wales, for their calcutta cup clash with scotland in edinburgh. northampton fullback george furbank has won a surprise recall to the side in place of freddie steward, who drops out of the match day squad entirely. 0llie lawrence returns from injury in place of fraser dingwall, while there are recalls for danny care, dan cole and ellis genge. blair kinghorn will start at full—back for scotland against england — one of the three changes to gregor townsend's side along with jamie ritchie and kyle steyn.

scotland are aiming for a fourth successive win over their oldest rivals — something they haven't done for almost 130 years. the former barcelona and brazil defender dani alves has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison in spain, after being found guilty of raping a woman in a nightclub in barcelona over a year ago. he had denied the charge. 0ur sports correspondent nesta mcgregor reports. dani alves, one of the most decorated footballers of all time. 126 caps for brazil and the club level, spells with paris saintjermain, juventus and barcelona, where he won six league titles and the champions league three times. but today in a court room in the same city he once represented, he was sentenced to 11.5 years in jail for rape. the encounter took place in the toilets in the vip section of a nightclub. dani alves was arrested in january 2023.
2:52 am
at first the ao—year—old denied knowing the woman before changing his story, claiming the sex was consensual. representatives for the vic and welcome the verdict but questioned the length of the sentence, given the footballer had faced the maximum of 15 years injail. this is about the victim's truth and the suffering she has gone through. in this sense we must feel happy and satisfied for her and other victims. we must analyse if the gravity of the verdict is comparable to the severity of what happened. in spain, a fall from grace for a player once one of the world's most expensive defenders. i think for a lot of people this feels like a crushing blow. it is the fall of one of the idols they had on a pedestal, someone they looked up to and considered one of the best footballers in the game. dani alves has been in police custody since he was arrested and after he has completed his prison sentence, he will be on probation for a furtherfive years.

35 years ago, britain's tracy edwards skippered the first all—female crew, to round cape horn in the whitbread round the world race, securing their place in the history books. this week, there's another historic moment being marked — as the first women of colour tackle the notorious voyage off the southern tip of mainland south america. hugh ferris has more. it is a famous boat that has embarked on a famous race with the all—female crew spending a total of eight months together going around the world in maiden. and this is the crucial part of their journey because rounding cape horn is something that no woman of colour has ever done before but we can speak to one of those who became the first. she is here alongside her skipper and you are both in uruguay, thank you forjoining us. vi, how was cape horn, was it as intimidating as it looks from this distance? it is nice. we passed cape horn during the night and it was an amazing moment.

i don't know, the graduation, it is amazing. and a long way not only geographically but in terms of the whole trip from where you grew up in durban where i understand you was scared of the sea and could not swim? yes. yeah. i could not swim and growing up as a kid you are being told that you mustn't go near the water that there were monsters and everything because they knew we could not swim so they tried to protect us and i only learned how to swim in 2019 so, yeah, this is a big change from not knowing how to swim to this stage of sailing around the world and in a big crazy ocean. it is hilarious. and heather it is for people like the that the maiden sales? yes and i could not be more

proud of the crew members on board and how much of a amazing role model they are for women, not only of colour, but girls everywhere around the world that are seeing our progress. it is certainly an honour to be the leader in that. congratulations to you both for what you have achieved so far and good luck for the final leg which leaves for southampton on march five. before we go, a reminder of our top story — and we're just hours away from the start of the fourth test between india and england — remember, india are 2—1 up in the five—match series so they can clinch it with victory in ranchi. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — but from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye.

hello there. it's been a pretty wet but mild february. however, thursday saw a change with this weather front, bringing some heavy rain for a time, then as it pushed its way steadily east, northwesterly wind direction kicked in and that had quite a dramatic impact to the feel of the weather wednesday afternoon. temperatures above the average mid—teens quite widely. by thursday, they were half that value and just below where they should be for this time of year. that's also translated into a pretty chilly start to friday morning. low single figures for many, and we haven't seen temperature values like that for quite some time. so certainly a shock to the system. but it will also be accompanied by hopefully some sunshine through central and eastern england and eastern scotland. there will be some showers out to the west with that brisk northwesterly wind and some of these will feed further inland as the day continues. wintry to higher ground. but a cool story again, seven to nine degrees. this is where the temperatures should be really for this time of year. now, as we go through friday evening, some of those showers will tend to fade away
2:57 am
and under clearing skies, those temperatures will fall even further. so saturday morning is going to be a cold start with a frost likely in rural parts as temperatures fall below freezing. so, yes, a cold start, but again, this quiet theme is set to continue. a good deal of fine weather, a few coastal showers in scotland, the risk of some showers moving through south wales and southern england for a time. but on the whole, most of us seeing some dry, sunny weather. and again, those temperatures just about scraping into double figures, if we're lucky. but for most of us, generally, between seven and nine degrees. slight problem on sunday with this area of low pressure in the fronts. now, there is the potential for that to just be a little bit further north, and if that happens, the rain could be further north. so we'll need to keep firming up on those details. but at the moment, it looks likely just to affect southwest england and the channels and maybe just fringing with the channel
2:58 am
coast for a time. more cloud across southern england, but elsewhere, largely fine and quiet. and again, temperatures between seven and nine degrees. now, that quieter theme is going to continue monday into tuesday. but as we move through the middle part of the week, the risk is it's turning increasingly wetter. but also the milder weather is set to return as well.
