it's a fine line to ensure that present and future generations will still be able to gasp in awe every time they look up at michelangelo's masterpiece. sara monetta, bbc news, vatican city. time for a look at the weather. here's chris faulkes. nothing as spectacular of that, you would only need one colour to paint a picture today and that is grey. you can see extensive cloud on the satellite picture but there are some breaks in the cloud for north—east and eastern side of the pennines and for these areas you may get some glimpses of sunshine. it is also quite damp with some drizzle in the forecast this afternoon for west scotland, northern ireland and parts

of wales. none of the rain particularly heavy and quite a mild day at 12 or 13 degrees. tonight heavier rain moves east across the country clearing from scotland and northern ireland were some blustery showers to follow. very mild across a good part of england and eastern wales with temperatures in double figures over night. tomorrow all change again, some colder air moving in across the vast majority of the uk behind this cold front. the front itself dragging its heels across east anglia and southern england where it will be waning for a good chunk of the day. sunshine and showers again for scotland and northern ireland, some of those showers having a bit of help mixed in. ifeeling day. on into the forecast for friday, a low—pressure set to move in. with this we get an occlusion somewhere around here and along that particular weather front
1:32 pm
were looking at the risk of seeing some hill snow. the greatest risk across the high ground of north wales, northern england and the southern uplands of scotland and high ground of northern ireland. some areas could see five centimetres of snow or more but still some uncertainty about where those worst affected areas will be. at lower elevations just cold rain that you get from this. temperatures only around three or 4 degrees so feeling cold for some. otherwise temperatures around seven, 9 degrees. heading into the weekend the same area of low pressure loitering and we see a mixture of sunny spells and showers for many areas of the country. the greatest risk of showers on saturday, some of those with sleet texting and overall probably fewer showers around on sunday with the more sunshine coming through and temperatures generally eight, 10 c.

thanks, chris. and that's bbc news at one. you can keep up with all the latest developments on the bbc website. now it's time to join our colleagues for the news where you are — goodbye. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm sarah mulkerrins. two—time olympic champion andy murray tells the bbc he wants one last shot at further olympic glory before retirement. former england striker turned broadcaster eni aluko criticises social media network x for allowing hatred to go unchecked. and, "we're coming". the ominous warning from erling haaland after he hits five for manchester city in the fa cup.
1:34 pm
welcome along. andy murray has told the bbc he "hopes" to be given another chance to compete at what would be a fifth olympic games and take to the court for team gb at paris 2024 this summer. the three—time grand slam winner made his olympic debut at beijing 2008 before going on to win gold medals at both london 2012 and rio 2016. injury struggles saw him withdraw from the singles but play a part in the doubles event at tokyo 2020. after continued struggles with his form and fitness murray has hinted that this could be his last season on the tour. well, andy murray is currently on court in the atp dubai tennis championships. he's taking on world number 18 ugo humbert of france in the round of 16.
1:35 pm
murray impressively beat canadian denis shapovalov on monday, but has looked frustrated at times during this encounter today. he lost the first set 6—2 and is currently battling to stay in the second. it is full— three down. breaking news as former manchester united defenderjohn o'shea has been appointed republic of ireland interim head coach for their march friendly against belgium and switzerland. o'shea won 118 caps for ireland and also had a spell as assistant to former manager stephen kenny, who left in november after failing to reach this summer's euros. o'shea will be supported by crystal palace coach paddy mccarthy, with the football association of ireland saying it plans to name a permanent manager in april. former england striker and broadcaster eni aluko has criticized social media network x for allowing people to "vomit their hatred unchecked". aluko, who faced a wave of abuse online after ex—footballer
1:36 pm
joey barton attacked her punditry, told the bbc, black women are being systematically targeted. as part of a series investigating extraordinary cases of online hate, the bbc*s marianna spring speaks exclusively to aluko, and tracks down one of her trolls. what a finish! eni aluko played for chelsea and england, scoring 33 international goals. now she's a broadcaster, but her success has been accompanied by a wave of hate, most recently triggered by posts on x from former footballer and managerjoey barton. online abuse from somebody who has millions of followers feels like the world is caving in on you. the hate sent from other users started talking about football, but quickly moved on to personal attacks. this is a societal issue where we have a platform that is allowing people who are not ok to just vomit their hatred unchecked.
1:37 pm
i tracked down one of eni's x trolls, who agrees to speak to me anonymously. following joey barton's comments, he has posted repeatedly, taking aim at female football pundits and other women. he talks about their gender, race and sexuality. the rhetoric is aggressive. i don't feel threatened. i don't know. it's just an easy target, i suppose if you look at it that way, no—one wants to know what a woman's got to say, you know? and please don't think i'm anti—women because i'm not. if you did have your real name and you did have a real photo of yourself, do you think you'd think more about what you post? definitely. 100%. why? it's a personal thing, i suppose. you're more accountable. you're more accountable for your... not so much your actions, for your comments. in one post, he said he hoped eni aluko was in a place where her safety would be at risk. it's tongue in cheek. i look at it as tongue in cheek. it's a little nibble for people to react. do you see, though, how, if you're
1:38 pm
on the receiving end of that, it could be really hurtful? i shouldn't have said it. but, you know, i'm thinking it's quite funny and it's not. joey barton did not respond to the points raised in this case. x the social media site also didn't respond. it says publicly it does not allow direct attacks on the basis of race or gender. it says, we believe that everyone has a voice and a right to use it. eni aluko wants more accountability. what i don't understand is why people can't disagree without being racist or sexist or misogynistic. you don't have to go past that line. you can disagree with me. it's fine, but disagree intelligently. it seems, though, that the way some social media sites work makes that difficult. it's affecting how we behave. marianna spring, bbc news. "we're coming" — that was the somewhat ominous message from erling haaland after he hit five goals in manchester city's 6—2 defeat of luton in the fa cup. after a challenging period with injuries haaland insists he is now getting back to his best

she said mr putin was not a politician but a "mobster" and head of an organised crime gang. she said negotiations and sanctions were of no use, and instead the eu should go after the lawyers and financers who allow putin to operate. we can watch that speech from yulia navalnaya, which she made to meps in strasbourg earlier today. thank you for the opportunity to hear me today. after putin tried to kill alexei for the first time he lived in southern germany for several months. he was recovering from the poison, learning how to walk and drive all over again. we walked a lot, sometimes going on short trips. one of them we went to strasbourg with our children. it is one of my and alexei's favourite cities. we have been there several
