these eastern areas, brighter conditions further north and west but with really heavy showers, so we had some sunshine earlier on today in northern ireland, not been a bad morning here, but showers will work their way in right across northern ireland, notjust staying in western counties and across into western scotland too. today, showers with hail and thunder mixed in, in orkney and shetland windy with gusts reaching 50—60 miles an hour, temperatures on the mild side, 8—12 degrees. overnight tonight an area of low pressure and swinging a band of low pressure and swinging a band of rain and from the west. ahead of the rain we are looking at cold and frosty conditions setting and particularly across scotland and northern counties of england, then into tomorrow, this area of low pressure could bring one or two issues because we've got this occluded front stretched across parts of north—west england and northern ireland and its along that that we could see a spell of hill snow. the amount of snow we get from this feature will vary a lot from place to place but it's just hill

snow, above 200 metres elevation. they could be some areas within these zones that see five centimetres or perhaps more, whereas at lower elevations where the vast majority of people live it's just cold rain we will get from this system and it will be cold, temperatures two or three degrees underneath this band of rain. some thing a bit brighterfor underneath this band of rain. some thing a bit brighter for scotland, some showers working into wales, the midlands, east anglia and southern counties of england. temperature is below average for the time of year. heading into the weekend the same area of low pressure is going to hang around. it will be weakening, gradually, as we go through the weekend, but nevertheless it will continue to bring the risk of some showers. now, the showers will be pretty widespread on saturday. some of them again with hail and thunder. nowhere is immune from seeing some of these downpours and it will be just about cold enough to see a bit of snow mixed in with the showers across the highest ground in scotland and northern england. temperatures around about 6—9 c, that's below average so it will feel quite cold. the second half of the

hello, i'm meghan owen. you're watching bbc news. let's get more now on the independent report into the murder of sarah everard in south london in 2021 — which has concluded that wayne couzens should never have been a police officer and opportunities to stop him offending were missed. the inquiry, led by lady elish angiolini, also calls for a radical overhaul of police vetting and recruitment. wayne couzens is serving a whole life sentence for sarah's rape and murder, and was off—duty when he kidnapped the 33—year—old, under the false guise of an arrest. her murder by a serving police officer prompted a widespread outpouring of anger and grief and sparked demonstrations over concern for women's safety. the chair of the inquiry has said that without a radical overhaul of police vetting and recruitment, there's "nothing to stop another couzens operating in plain sight."
