and jimmy anderson shares his reflections on england's tour of india, and how he'll have to fight to stay in the side this summer. this series in particular, ifeel like i was bowling really well, just didn't quite get the wickets that maybe on another day or another series, i would've got. hello there, and welcome along to the programme. it's been a long time coming, but arsenal are into the quarterfinals of the champions league. the gunners were taken all the way to a penalty shoot—out by porto, after the score on aggregate was level after extra time in a scrappy match at the emirates. the last time the gunners reached the last eight of the competition was back in 2010. our football correspondent john murray was there.

just the one goal here at the emirates scored really well, superfinished by trossard in the mst minute after odegaard played him in. big moment when odegaard had a goal ruled out in the second half of normal time for an alleged foul on pepe, so it came to the nerve shredding penalties — but arsenal's nerves remained intact, excellent penalties from odegaard, havertz, sacco and rice — whereas made two saves, a fingertip from wendell on to the post, hit him and didn't go in, then also diving to his left to save the deciding one. that's the one that takes arsenal through to the quarterfinals of the champions league for the first time in m years, and ends that long run which is always thrown at them of how they've gone out in the round of 16 in the champions league seven times running. in the other game on tuesday, barcelona reached the champions league quarterfinals for the first time since 2020 with victory over napoli.

fermin lopez and joao cancelo put barca on their way — the hosts pulled one back through amir rrahmani, but robert lewandowski settled it with seven minutes to go. there are two more games to come on wednesday night. inter milan take a 1—0 lead to atletico madrid, there are two more games to come on wednesday night. the german side hoping home advantage will prove the difference. if our offence are allowed, then it's much easierfor us to perform well, and it's much harderfor the openers to perform well. and this is something that we are really looking forward to — but we also feel the responsibility to give something back. and that's our part of the story, we need to perform well and prepare ourselves — we need to be brave, be ready to show everyone that we are willing to step into the next round, and then we will get the most incredible support that you can imagine. meanwhile, spanish club celta vigo have sacked their head coach, rafa benitez.
1:48 am
the former liverpool boss was appointed lastjune, but has only won five games in la liga this season. their 4—0 defeat at one of his other former clubs, real madrid, on sunday left them only two points outside of the relegation places. celta vigo thanked benitez for his honesty and professionalism during his time in charge. al hilal have broken the world record for consecutive wins, after beating rivals al ittihad 2—0 in the second leg of the afc champions league quarterfinals for their 28th victory in a row. the saudi pro league team beat karim benzema's al ittihad to surpass the 27—straight wins managed by welsh premier league outfit the new saints in the 2016—*17 season. tuesday's victory gave al hilal a 4—0 aggregate win to seal a spot in the asian champions league semifinals. before liv, it was called golf*s fifth major — and while that tag may be gone, the players championship still produces one of the strongest fields in the sport. it all gets going on thursday at tpc sawgrass in florida, all taking place while

the sport waits for clarity on the proposed merger between the pga tour and liv golf. here's our golf correspondent ian carter. the confirmation came from jay monahan, the commissioner of the pga tour today, the negotiations are ongoing. he said the negotiations are accelerating, there were still several key issues to be ironed ironed out, and that ironed out, and that there was still a shared vision that could lead to the unification of the game. but later in the news conference, he did say, "if that can be done" — and i think that's the big big word, if, bearing in mind that there has been extra investment that's come in from the strategic sports group, which is headlined by the fenway group who owned liverpool football club. and that has, in many respects, clouded the future because that wasn't on the horizon when this framework agreement was initially thrashed out injune.

then it was said that a deal with saudi arabia could be done within weeks. then the deadline was extended to the end of last year — and here we are in the third month of 2024, and we are still no nearer anyone saying that an agreement is in sight. as you heard from iain carter there, the talks very much much ongoing, but still a deal to be struck. the pga tour's commissioner, jay monahan, insists ress is being made — but said it was in the interests of the sport to get the right agreement. i do believe that negotiating a deal with pif is the best outcome. and obviously it has to be the right deal for both sides — like any situation or negotiation. the conversations with ssg, for the reasons ijust said, alex, i think have enhanced the likelihood of us reaching a successful conclusion. the pga tour has been limited in our ability to invest back into some of those

growth opportunities. we no longer are with the formation of pga tour enterprises, and i think an ultimate deal would be in the best interests of the game, and ultimately would be in the best interests of the tour — if that can be done, and that's the spirit with which we approach the conversations and negotiations. and i think that goes both ways. well, one man who is involved in this week's players championship, is the defending champion scottie scheffler. he's been having his say onjon rahm, one of his chief rivals, choosing to leave the tour for liv. scheffler said he'll miss competing against him, but that the pga tour must move on. jon was somebody that i always love competing against, and that's something that we talked about after the ryder cup — you know, we've had some good battles over the years, and it was definitely strange for me to see him leave.
1:52 am
i was a bit surprised, with how competitive he is, but he made his decision, so we will seejon a bit less. but the pga tour still moves on, we've got a lot of great guys we are competing against here, and yeah, it'll be a fun year. tennis now — and at indian wells, carlos alcaraz is through to the quarterfinal stage of the tournament. he's beat hungary's fabian marozsan. the spaniard, who's the defending champion, will perhaps be buoyed by novak djokovic*s exit at indian wells. he also gets revenge over maroszan who beat him in rome on the clay last year. and stefanos tsitsipas, the 11th seed from greece, was on the end of an upset. he slipped to a 6—2, 6—4 defeat to czech youngster jiri lehecka, who reached the quarterfinals of a masters 1,000 event for the first time. england veteran fast bowler james anderson says he has no plans to retire in the immediate future. the 41—year—old says he feels like he's in the best shape he's ever been, but admits he'll have to work hard to make the england squad for the summer season. anderson became the first pace

bowler to reach 700 test wickets during england's series loss in india earlier this month. he's been speaking on the bbc podcast tailenders. i feel like i'm definitely in the best shape that i've ever been in — which is weird, like, ijust feel like i've got the fitness side of it, sort of... it's in a good place at the minute, my recovery is good, the fact that i can come back at 5pm and still bowl the same speed, that's sort of something that i think is really important and helps confidence, and stuff. and then, in terms of skills, obviously the last nine months have probably not delivered as much as i would want, in terms of wickets — but this series in particular, i feel i was bowling really well, ijust didn't quite get the wickets. i think i would be me now — i think i like where i'm at, where my game's at.

i've still got the enjoyment of turning up every day and trying to get better in the nets, and stuff like that. james anderson there. a blow for england in rugby union, following their dramatic win over ireland in the six nations at the weekend. winger immanuel feyi—waboso has been ruled out of their final game against france with concussion. the 21—year—old winger was superb in the victory, but reported concussion symptoms to the team on monday. attack coach richard wigglesworth confirmed feyi—waboso will be unavailable for the trip to lyon, saying he did the right thing. he took a bang in the game that wasn't picked up, and he didn't — you know, was no big incident, but then didn't feel quite right monday. the symptoms came later? the symptoms came later, so again, part of this education is now part of the laws of the game, part of how well educated everyone has been is that manny felt he could report this in the right way,

some eastern areas of england, and particularly south east england and east anglia may well be dry. and we should get a bit of sunshine here, so 16—17 celsius not out of the question. things are a little cooler still across scotland and northern ireland. that weather front, then, does move northwards, taking rain across more of scotland. the low pressure then driving that system sits across the uk. that weather front will be out of the way for friday. things will be turning a little bit cooler. windy weather actually through the english channel, and we'll see showers coming into england and wales — some of these could be heavy and thundery. bit of snow over the scottish mountains, otherwise it's rain, sinking southwards here, a northerly wind pushing down — that'll introduce cooler air. but we still could see 13 celsius across some south—eastern areas to end the week.
