to apply pressure on title rivals arsenal and liverpool. and we hear form the women in football balancing being a mother and playing in the wsl. it's tough, you know. you miss parents* evening. you miss shows that she's doing and that's when you start to question what are you doing. hello there, and thanks forjoining us, where we start with the news that arsenal have moved back to the top of the premier league, above liverpool, after a 2—0 win at home to relegation—threatened luton town. gunners captain martin odegaard opened the scoring in the 26th minute and an own goal from the visitors just before half—time was enough to earn the hosts all three points. we started the game well. i think the first half
1:46 am
we had our moments and conceded nothing and scored two very, very good goals and in the second half, yeah, credit to them, they are a really good side. they are really difficult to play against and we'd like to generate more moment more control but overall, yeah, winning again, a clean sheet and, in another three days, another game. phil foden scored a hat—trick for manchester city as they beat aston villa 4—1 at the etihad stadium. it's 21 goals for the season now for foden, his three goals coming after rodri opened the scoring for pep guardiola's side who now move level on points with liverpool, for 2h hours at least, while villa remain fourth. every game now is a must—win for us. it's almost like a cup final every game so, yeah, i'm delighted with the outcome today. i got to help the game with three goals and i thought the performance was very high against a quality side so delighted. i scored quite a few this year and i'm delighted with that. like i said before, i do
1:47 am
myself as a goal—scorer and i want to keep growing and continuing to score more goals, because i believe i can do it. it's tight at the top, with the first three separated byjust one point as we head towards the business end of the season. pep guardiola was asked afterwards for his thoughts on not playing the like of kevin de bruyne and erling haaland. we prepared the game with the players i have to win it, notjust, you know, to... so the priority was yes, today but this time and the energy we spent against arsenal and we need fresh, fresh legs, so i don't know would the other teams have done the same but we need it. with the schedule in the future so three days, three days, three days, three days, so we need to rest. while isth—placed brentford held ninth—placed brighton to a goalless draw in west london. danny welbeck, who came on as a late sub, failed to capitalise in stoppage time for the seagulls, as brentford move six above the drop zone. bayer leverkusen remain

unbeaten this season and are through to the german cup final after a convincing 4—0 win over second—tier fortuna dusseldorf. xabi alonso*s side were ahead by three at the break and built on that in the second half with a second on the night for florian wirtz, and leverkusen will now play second—tier kaiserslautern in next month's decider. fiorentina take a slender 1—0 lead into the copa italia semifinal into bergamo later this month. they saw off atalanta i—o thanks to a rolando mandragora goaljust over half an hour in. and in the coupe de france, iii—time winners paris saint—germain saw a kylian mbappe penalty miss, overcome by a goal shortly after by the french captain as they advanced to the final 1—0 against rennes. it was mbappe*s 39th goal of the season that proved decisive and ps6 will face lyon in next month's final. to thej.league, where thiago santana scored a quite stunning goalfor urawa red diamonds, but couldn't prevent them slumping to defeat

to fc tokyo. with the scores level, the brazilian produced this moment of magic from just inside the fc tokyo half to break the deadlock, the ball sailing over the head of the stranded goalkeeper. let's have a look at that. but it proved in vain, as fc tokyo stormed back in the second half. ryotaro araki equalised before kuryu matsuki earned his side all three points. chelsea have condemned abuse received by their captain connor gallagher as completely unacceptable, and say a video clip with a young black mascot has been taken considerably out of context. the clip emerged after chelsea's 2—2 draw with burnley on saturday. it showed gallagher not acknowledging a high five from the child in the tunnel. the captain and the mascot then walked onto the field together. how is it possible to belive that the intention of connor is to ignore a mascot? come on.
1:50 am
and then... come on. it makes me very, very sad. because i know connor. he does not deserve to be abused. no—one deserves to be abused but connor is a great, great kid, and i know he's caring about everything. i hate when people feel free to abuse in social media and things like this. this upsets me so much. luis rubiales, the form or president of the spanish football federation, has been arrested as part of a corruption investigation. he was detained on his arrival in madrid from the dominican republic. he's suspected of receiving illegal commissions when negotiating a lucrative deal to stage the spanish super cup competition in saudi arabia. prosecutors are seeking a 2.5—yearjail term for mr rubiales who denies any wrongdoing. separately, he's also due to go on trial for sexual assault for kissing playerjenni hermoso on the mouth after last summer's world cup final. motherhood and a career in football were, until recently, considered incompatible, with many players retiring early in order to start a family. but now there's a growing number of mothers returning

to the women's super league. attitudes are changing and support is increasing but there are still challenges as our sports correspondent reports. you may know carla ward as aston villa women's manager. wsl history! but she has another, more importantjob. what did you do at school today? we did some science! did you? mum to four—year—old hartley. turn it up! 0k. are you going to sing to me? wednesdays are special for ward. it's the only day she makes it home to sheffield in time for the school run. you're an incredible mum. thank you so much. i feel honoured. thank you. what does hartley think of yourjob? she's very proud. she loves myjob. she loves telling everyone that i'm a football manager. ward co—parents hartley with her former partner butjuggling the demands of motherhood and management is a struggle. just before christmas, hartley said to me why do we never have a day off together?
1:52 am
because naturally i work on the weekends. it's mum guilt. it's tough. you know, you miss parents* evening. you miss shows that she's doing and that's when you start to question what are you doing. why are you doing it? and is there longevity in it. it's a heavy—heart, constant—pulling battle. there's not many female managers at the top of the game. do you think the struggle of balancing football and family life is a factor in all of that? 100%. ward says she feels supported at villa. she is, though, one of only two mums managing in the top flight. herfriend, emma hayes, is the other. but the chelsea boss will soon leave for the usa job. a better work—life balance was part of the appeal. while mothers in management are a rarity, more top players are choosing to have children during their careers. west ham's katrina gorry is one of them. a mum to two—year—old harper. for as long as i knew i kind of thought i would have to hang up the boots before
1:53 am
i started a family, it's all i thought about. i dreamt about it. i just knew that there was something missing and i went to an ivf clinic and four weeks later, i was pregnant and then, after i had her, all i thought about was, you know, getting back to the game. ifelt like i loved it more than i ever had before and having harper on the sideline, itjust made me become more proud. gorry was back playing three months after giving birth and last summer walked out for australia at the world cup. she was one of the players of the tournament. but life's not been without its challenges. the amount of things you had to do before you got out of the house just to get to training was insane. i just didn't think you'd be able to get through it. i was breast—feeding her until she was about a year old. that was hard, trying to juggle that as well. but, um, i had no doubt in my body. that definitely wasn't a challenge for me. i knew i could... you know, i went through birth so i knew i could do anything. now that clubs are more supportive, football and family are coming together. it's taken baby steps,
1:54 am
but the sport is changing. four—time world champion sebastian vettel has hinted he could be tempted to make a formula i comeback after revealing he's been talking to the boss of a major team. vettel, who won his four titles with red bull between 2010 and 2013, left fi at the end of the 2022 campaign after six years at ferrari and two with aston martin. not really. people ask and keep asking but, you know, i've obviously retired, not to set a date on the comeback. but i always say you never know what happens. so at the minute, i'm thinking i'm still sane, i'm happy. life is good, but you never know with and an opportunity opening up, i might be appealing and something to consider and think about. 0bviously lots of stuff is happening for next year so early and obviously it does cross my mind eventually but, yeah, not a priority at the minute.

of course, you can get more on that and everything else from the bbc sport website or download the bbc sport app to your mobile or tablet. from me and the rest of the team until next time, it's bye for now. hello, there. areas of low pressure are forming an orderly queue in the coming days, with some drier, sunnier interludes. then by the week, two things will happen, it will will turn warmer but it will also turn windier. the area of low pressure heading our way for the weekend is just starting to take shape behind me. not much to see just yet but that low is set to deepen. in the shorter term, you can

still cold in the north of scotland but for northern ireland, england and wales, 15 to 18 degrees and then into the start of the weekend, this deep area of low pressure with lots of isobars squeezing together is set to pass to the west of the uk. now, that is going to bring some very strong winds. we'll see rain clearing the north of scotland, clearing to a mix of sunny spells and showers. probably not too many showers. probably not too many showers. there will be a decent amount of dry weather around, but the winds very brisk indeed, particularly for some of these western coastings, 60 miles per hour gusts or more with those winds coming from the south, though, feeling pretty warm. it could be the warmest day of the year so far, highs of 20, maybe 21 degrees. not quite as warm on sunday, but temperatures still well up into the teens, some showers and some sunshine too.
