have the white t—shirt at the top, a man with a ballard, seemingly blocking the path of the man in black. we understand he is the alleged attacker, who carried out multiple stabbings inside the shopping mall. —— a man with up paul. remarkable bravery from the man with the white t—shirt. it was a busy afternoon full of shoppers and this is the police, getting so many of them to safety, evacuating them. lots of people so a very difficult logistical exercise to get people out clearly with a panic and confusion, not only from the stabbing but at one point add gunshot because a police officer was laid on by members of the public and went towards the man with a knife and when he raised it towards her,

11:42 am
asi as i said, it is very early days but there is no suggestion there was anyone target but i could change and we will only know that in time. thank you, everyone. thank you. so that was the latest update from karen webb, police commissioner for new south wales, giving us a couple of crucial new details, helping to build a clearer picture of what exactly took place this afternoon in sydney, inside that shopping centre. we have updates on the officer herself who was involved in shooting dead the attacker, we got updates on the attacker but i want to start with the updates on the victims. a bit more understanding of why there were two different numbers initially reported. right at
11:43 am
the big—ip we now know four women and one man were killed at the scene. that is where the number five came from. we know from the update that another person, a women died subsequently, taking the total number of people killed 26. as for those casualties taken to hospital, eight people are in hospital, including a nine—month—old who has beenin including a nine—month—old who has been in surgery. we have no more details about the status of that baby other than they have been in surgery and it is too early the police officer said to give any update. the brand—new information was about the alleged attacker, we know now that he is a0 years old. they have not carried out a formal identification process yet, however,
11:44 am
they said if it is the person that they said if it is the person that they think it is, quote we know a little bit about him. it would lead them not towards terrorism investigation, we learned he was known to law enforcement but they were stressing the errors you heard they are still waiting for identification but they do think they have an identification of this person. —— they were stressing they are as you heard. we also heard about the police officer involved, a very senior police officer who walked towards the attacker and when the attacker lunged or showed the knife, the officer responded, discharging a firearm and the language just discharging a firearm and the languagejust then, to neutralise that threat. shot dead in other words. the officer as has already
11:45 am
been the case has been praised for her bravery, incredible bravery of the officer, notjust of the officer, we heard also of shopkeepers, people using that press conference as an opportunity to comment on the bravery of many shopkeepers, getting people away and helping them escape. also she was asked about the condition of the police officer given the incident and said quote she is doing well given the circumstances. there will be a formal interview process tomorrow. also one interesting line i would pick out, emphasised before, quote, it could have been much worse. that was something which was echoed by the prime ministerjust a couple of hours ago, talking about the actions of this police officer in going on her own towards the
11:46 am
attacker and then quote, neutralising that threat. if that had not taken place the presumption is that it could have been much worse. with me as a reporter listening into that. took us through what we —— i have talked through what we —— i have talked through what we —— i have talked through what we heard but to take us back to the beginning about what we thinking happened around tapestry in the afternoon. , , ., ., ., afternoon. yes, it started around 3m in afternoon. yes, it started around 3pm in bondi. — afternoon. yes, it started around 3pm in bondi. a _ afternoon. yes, it started around 3pm in bondi, a very _ afternoon. yes, it started around 3pm in bondi, a very busy - afternoon. yes, it started around i 3pm in bondi, a very busy shopping centre in the east of sydney. police say a man went to the shopping centre and then left and returned 20 minutes later with a knife and that is when this incident unfolded. four women were killed at the scene, one man was killed and another woman has died laterfrom her injuries. the offender was also shot dead by the police officer who was a senior inspector, who rushed towards danger and has been praised for showing
11:47 am
enormous courage. we know about the offender, that he was known to police and that if the person they think it is, this ao—year—old man is in the frame but not yet formally identified, if it is confirmed to be that man, police have said they do not believe this was terrorism. so an interesting line, federal police are on standby to assist and have offered their services but have not yet been drawn into the case. if this was linked to terrorism that —— they would be called in. they might get pulled into this but that is an interesting update we had from the police. at this stage, knowing what they do about this alleged offender, they do about this alleged offender, they do about this alleged offender, they do not believe the potential motive was terrorism. they said it was possible it was random and they do not believe anyone was specifically targeted, making this all the more difficult to
11:48 am
understand. we have been hearing from a lot of people who had to run away and we have seen videos of that moment. police are still trying to put together how it all unfolded. so that interesting judgment from the police there about potential motives because just in the last two hours we had our last update, simply there was no sign of any motive at the scene and it was far too early when it came to establishing a motive. after that update i spoke to an australian security expert and got his assessment. it is very good to know there is just one attacker and the situation was responded to so professionally. there are lots of stories about passers by intervening. sadly five people
11:49 am
confirmed dead and nine peoples dad. the knifeman also was shot dead when confronted by a lone police officer so we don't have any information yet, please no doubt will be identifying him, looking for personal effects including a mobile phone and trying to look at an online footprint and trying to figure out motive. the response has been very professional, no speculation aloud, nothing ruled in or out. that is a measure of maturity. perhaps a decade ago there would have been more speculation on panic but this is a very calm and professional response. let panic but this is a very calm and professional response.- panic but this is a very calm and professional response. let us pick u . professional response. let us pick u- on that professional response. let us pick up on that point — professional response. let us pick up on that point because - professional response. let us pick up on that point because in - professional response. let us pick up on that point because in the i professional response. let us pick. up on that point because in the last 90 minutes, we heard that update from police in new south wales saying as things stand, they were confident as person acted alone and there was no continuing threat. that was the current situation, things
11:50 am
can change but that was a very clear statement from the police. also saying there is nothing at the scene to indicate a motive or ideology. could you talk to us about that phrasing, what they thought would be behind putting it like that? police are very conscious _ behind putting it like that? police are very conscious that _ behind putting it like that? police are very conscious that the i behind putting it like that? police are very conscious that the publicj are very conscious that the public will immediately wonder why somebody would do this and could it be political, terrorism. they are conscious of the fact it is important to shut down speculation and remain calm and work on the basis of facts. so of course they must respond regarding motive oestrogen and try and figure out what it might be. perhaps already they know that identity and footprint of this individual. —— regarding their motivation. these incidents are very real in australia so if it turns out this person was acting out of political motivation that would be very rare. sadly the
11:51 am
most common incident is violence but it seems that he was attacking come —— complete strangers which is a very uncommon occurrence. the experience of the last decade with attacks, many attributed to terrorism, it is significant about maturity with media and police recognising we cannot speak about anything until we can confirm the facts which might establish motivation. the fact is no one else involved is very reassuring but it does not bring back the lives lost. just some breaking news on as a separate story involving iran. iran state news agency said its revolutionary guard has seized the ship, the msc 80s vessel because quote, it is linked to israel. it is
11:52 am
now a ship being transferred to iran's territorial waters. the revolutionary guard navy special forces helicopter seemingly boarded the ship, it is a portuguese flagged vessel. that detail from the iran state news agency. since then we have had another update, this is from our diplomatic correspondent, james landau. and it is from the company managing the ship, saying we regret to confirm that the ship which is owned by zodiac maritime has been boarded by iranian authorities via a helicopter as she passed the strait of hormuz approximately all 2a3 so the early hours of this morning and it then goes on to give the precise
11:53 am
coordinates of this location 25 people were on board, so 20 53 —— 25 on board, the statement goes on to say we are working with the authorities to ensure their well—being and the safety of the vessel. that statementjustin 20 minutes ago, coming to us from the iran state news agency and then from that company involved. iran has effectively boarded the ship and is stealing it back into iranian territorial waters they say it is quote linked to israel. we are keeping across developments there, potentially very significant given the background of the hostilities and the tensions in the middle east so go keep a cross app for you. as you have been seeing on the screen, we are keeping up with live pictures from sydney, that is still a completely locked down area outside
11:54 am
the westfield shopping centre. police still in control of the area, armed police are still patrolling that area. however, the last update from police as they believe that the threat is contained. this is no longer an ongoing security threat to people in sydney because they believe the attacker, the knifeman who was inside that shopping centre and killed six people and stabbed and killed six people and stabbed and injured many more, was acting alone and they are not searching for anyone else. these are some of the images from inside. the person on the left dressed in black as the attacker and the personal on white with their pole stopping and blocking the way of the attacker. what bravery it would seem from that video and the bravery of many in the shopping centre was praised by police in the latest update.
11:55 am
shopkeepers and members of the public. you can see members of the public. you can see members of the public here being evacuated, hundreds were inside that building across many flaws in many shops, a very busy shopping afternoon as you can imagine. the latest update from police giving us details of the attacker, no name, no formal identification yet however we got some details, a ao—year—old man, someone they believe was known to law enforcement and they say if it is the person they believe they do know a little about him. there is plenty more coverage coming up here on bbc news, do stay with us. this is bbc news, goodbye. hello again. we've got some warmer weather again for the southeast of england today, but elsewhere it's going to turn chillier compared to yesterday.
11:56 am
temperatures will be dropping down. that was the scene this morning in london. some pretty grey skies here, but i'm hopeful that we'll see something a bit brighter developing into the afternoon as that cloud disappears from the southeast, perhaps still a little bit foggy around the english channel coast. some cloud across wales, the midlands into northern england with some showers, rain spreading eastward across scotland and northern ireland, replaced by heavy, potentially thundery showers this afternoon. gusty winds to go with that as well. and notably cooler, 10 to 13 degrees celsius compared to 20 celsius yesterday in the north east of scotland, but still up to 20, 21 degrees in the south east of england. with that sunshine, it's going to feel really quite pleasant. but as we go through tonight, you'll notice the milder, warmer air starts to move away to the southeast as we go into sunday. that colder air will start to replace it. and we'll notice that chillier weather coming into the south east through tomorrow. but overnight tonight, still some showery outbreaks of rain across scotland, northern england, tending to clear away. and then with clear skies tonight, temperatures dropping down close
11:57 am
to freezing in the glens of scotland, but generally speaking, about 5—8 degrees celsius. but it means that actually sunday morning should be a fine start to the day. plenty of blue skies and sunshine, some cloud building up across wales, northern england, maybe the odd shower here. more significant showers, though, for northern ireland and scotland where again, they could be heavy, perhaps even a bit thundery into the afternoon with blustery winds. temperatures here again about 10, ii, 12 degrees for the southeast, ia or 15 degrees celsius. so that cooler air moving in. on into the new working week. we've got this area of low pressure to the north and northwesterly winds will bring the threat of some wintry showers. notice we have got some white blobs on the map here. so we're talking about some hail, sleet, even some snow of the higher ground of scotland, northern england, north wales. those showers will take a while to drift into southern areas. there'll be one or two into the afternoon, but staying a little bit drier here, with some sunny spells and temperatures
11:58 am
on monday, about 9—13 degrees celsius, right about the average, maybe a bit below the average for the time of year. staying a bit more unsettled for tuesday, wednesday. but by the end of the week, signs are that it should be drier, perhaps a bit brighter as well, with temperatures of 15 or 16. bye— bye.
11:59 am
live from london. this is bbc news. at least six people are dead in sydney after a man stabs multiple people in a busy shopping centre.
12:00 pm
there were four females deceased in the shopping centre, one male, and subsequently another female passed away in hospital. hello. welcome to programme. we start this hour with breaking news out of australia. this is the scene in the last few moments. it is still a critical incident, police are still at the shopping centre, in lockdown, however, the attacker is believed to have been shot dead by police and there is no longer an ongoing threat. unfortunately, six people are now known to have been killed inside that shopping centre, around 3:30pm this afternoon. several others are injured, including very
12:01 pm
young child.
