wejust saw, we here are pictures ofjerusalem where we just saw, we can see the live feed of also tel aviv, a calmer situation. the extraordinary events overnight, we have a live feed of the israel lebanon border too. let's take a look now at some of the major international reaction. president biden rushed to the situation room in washington to keep across the developments. the white house published a photo from the situation room on x. you can see the president surrounded by some of his top security officials. defense secretary lloyd austin, secretary of state antony blinken, among others. and president biden has spoken over the phone with israeli pm benjamin netanyahu — to say he condemns the attacks in the strongest possible terms. in a statement president biden said "i ve just spoken "with prime minister netanyahu to reaffirm america s "ironclad commitment to the security of israel. "i told him that israel demonstrated a remarkable capacity "to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks 7 sending "a clear message to its foes
11:16 am
that they cannot effectively threaten the security of israel." he went on to say... "i will convene my fellow g7 leaders to coordinate a united diplomatic "response to iran s brazen attack." let's speak to our security correspondent gordon corera. how do you think the events overnight have changed or recalibrated the security calculations? it recalibrated the security calculations?— recalibrated the security calculations? , . , calculations? it is a very delicate and difficult _ calculations? it is a very delicate and difficult moment _ calculations? it is a very delicate and difficult moment in - calculations? it is a very delicate and difficult moment in many - calculations? it is a very delicate l and difficult moment in many ways because we have seen this attempt by iran to carry out a large—scale attack which it has called a success, despite the fact that israel says it shot down 99% of the missiles and drones. clearly, iran wants to feel like it has taken action and can now put a lid on this and stop it. but israel feels that this unprecedented move of attacking israel directly does require some
11:17 am
kind of response. if that is the question now, the attention will be on display sea and the war council. and what kind of response it needs to carry out. do you have had statements of support, you have a lot of diplomacy coming of the g7 potentially having a virtual meeting, un security council meeting. all of that will be to urge restraint. because the question is does israel feel it needs to hit backin does israel feel it needs to hit back in a significant way and what are the implications of that. i think it is a very uncertain moment in terms of what happens next with a few different scenarios.— few different scenarios. thank you for that. let's _ few different scenarios. thank you for that. let's take _ few different scenarios. thank you for that. let's take a _ few different scenarios. thank you for that. let's take a look - few different scenarios. thank you for that. let's take a look again i few different scenarios. thank you for that. let's take a look again at | for that. let's take a look again at events overnight. we will run through what happened when and where.

sky, missiles fired from the ground to take out missiles and drones flying overhead. let's get the reaction from iran. music plays people celebrating in the streets, they view this as retaliation for a specific strike, widely believed to be carried out by israel on iranians consulate in syria a few weeks ago. let's take you to the map to show you why the stakes are so high. there is iran, the first time it has launched an attack from its oil on israel, you can see the distance and the geography make this a particularly delicate and complex time. a couple of lines coming in, one saying that iran is summoning
11:20 am
the french, british and german envoys over their reaction of the attack on israel. that has come in the last few minutes from the afp news agency, iran summoning the french, british, german envoys in reaction to the attack. we have heard from reuters news agency that jordan's prime minister has been saying that the escalation in the region would lead to dangerous path, he stresses the need to reduce escalation. that is a message echoed by many across the world. we are going to head to london. my colleague is standing by it. bring us up to date. colleague is standing by it. bring us up to date-— colleague is standing by it. bring us up to date. prime minister rishi sunak is condemning _ us up to date. prime minister rishi sunak is condemning the _ us up to date. prime minister rishi sunak is condemning the attack. us up to date. prime minister rishi| sunak is condemning the attack and says it is proof that iran is intent

on sowing chaos in its own back yard. we do know that in terms of the uk response, it did deploy rafjets as well as air refuelling tankers to the region. we had that confirmed by the ministry of defence, we have already had an operation in place, which was there to respond to the islamic state group which was also redeployed to help israel defend itself in the iraq, syria region. the big message coming out of the uk is that it is presenting a united front with israel's allies and it is urging restraint. again, you were talking about those comments, diplomacy coming out and that is the big message because every single decision has the key consideration of tensions could escalate based on israel's response. the uk as well as other allies will have in mind what
11:22 am
the major generalfrom other allies will have in mind what the major general from iran said which was that should there be any further action, which was that should there be any furtheraction, iran's which was that should there be any further action, iran's action will be larger than anything we have seen before. and if allies were to back israel's response there will be consequences as well. they took a basis from the us as a specific example. the big message from rishi sunak is that they want to prevent further bloodshed in the region. as you pointed out, this was an attack which largely was intercepted. thank ou for that which largely was intercepted. thank you for that update _ which largely was intercepted. thank you for that update from _ which largely was intercepted. thank you for that update from the - which largely was intercepted. thank you for that update from the uk. crossing to jerusalem, you for that update from the uk. crossing tojerusalem, my colleague is there. can we quickly reflect on the interview you did with the idf, following the first time, our opportunity to question them about events overnight and what happens next. a couple of lines with relation to iran. quote, iran is
11:23 am
behind everything bad, and also iran has been there since the course of this war. referring notjust to the events overnight. what did you take from that interview? it events overnight. what did you take from that interview?— from that interview? it very much reiterates what _ from that interview? it very much reiterates what israel's _ from that interview? it very much reiterates what israel's concerns l reiterates what israel's concerns about the islamic republic have been for the last decades, since the 1979 islamic revolution. israel describes iran as the worlds biggest state sponsor of terrorism, it sees iran's hands behind the actions of its proxies and armed non—state actors whether it is hezbollah in lebanon, the militias in iraq and syria and the militias in iraq and syria and the rebels in yemen. iran has made its opposition to what it calls the zionist regime, that is how it describes israel, it is a key tenant in its revolutionary doctrine, so there have been shadow wars and
11:24 am
covert operations for many decades, and this is the first direct confrontation. both of them hurled rhetoric, accusations against each other. there have been a war of words leading up to that attack in the early hours of the morning, we have had more today. the rest of the world is watching with alarm, urging maximum restraint, hoping that this retaliatory strike by iran doesn't provoke an israeli reaction because the region would be on a far more dangerous spiral. even if israel doesn't retaliate, it doesn't remove the fact that this is the deepest, most dangerous fault line in the region. the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, for many years has spoken about iran as the biggest danger for israel. 0n at least one occasion, i heard from his aide that he was pulled back from the brink of
11:25 am
ordering a direct attack on iran. so there is a lot of history in this moment and a lot of peril. thank you for that. moment and a lot of peril. thank you for that- plenty _ moment and a lot of peril. thank you for that. plenty more _ moment and a lot of peril. thank you for that. plenty more coming - moment and a lot of peril. thank you for that. plenty more coming up i for that. plenty more coming up later. ijust want for that. plenty more coming up later. i just want to remind for that. plenty more coming up later. ijust want to remind you of what the iranians have said about the attack overnight, they said that from their point of view the attack is over and there is no intention to continue the operation but if the zionist regime takes any action against the islamic republic, on our soil or on places belonging to us, our next operation will be much larger. more reaction coming, this is bbc news. it will be a lovely day for many of us, we have had sunshine this morning for most parts of the uk and we keep some dry weather and sunny spells, especially towards southern

and eastern areas. that is the scene in gloucestershire with those blue skies, it will feel colder today compared to yesterday. the warmer weather we had in the southeast with 21 degrees in essex, that will disappear because we have this cold air mass right across the uk. temperatures down on yesterday in the south—east, good sunshine, here in the afternoon, possible as or two showers in north wales and northern england, more substantial rain in northern ireland and into scotland, that could be heavy and thundery through the afternoon. blustery winds to go without. temps just across scotland and northern ireland 10-12 , across scotland and northern ireland 10—12 , notably cooler compared to yesterday in england and wales, around 13 celsius. through tonight, this rain will sink into the south—east, through the night it could be quite heavy and thundery for one or two of us. there will be a lot of shows through the night, temperatures down to 4—7 celsius.

iran strikes at israel with an unprecedented attack, but the hundreds of drones and missiles are taken out of the sky. this is the scene live in tel aviv. it was the first time iran had ever launched a direct military assault on israel. supporters of the iranian government take to the streets of tehran to celebrate the attack. the iranian retaliatory action comes after israel's strike on its consulate in syria two weeks ago prime minister netanyahu convenes his war cabinet as the us reaffirms its ironclad commitment to israel* security. jordanjoins israel, us, uk and france, saying it intercepted some flying objects while they were passing over its airspace. in other news — a man who killed six people in a sydney shopping centre before being shot dead is identified by australian police.

hello, welcome to the programme. there is growing international reaction right around the world to the events in israel overnight. we will first take a look at exactly what happened. air raid sirens. the super sirens blaring out over jerusalem, these are the skies above jerusalem, these are the skies above jerusalem and the explosions you can see is around drones with missiles fired at israel overnight. israel says 99% of them were taken out. it wasn'tjust says 99% of them were taken out. it wasn't just over the says 99% of them were taken out. it wasn'tjust over the skies of israel, this isjordan and israel's allies, they helped shoot things down from the sky too. this is syria, the skies over damascus.
11:32 am
going back to israel, the iron toma, a phrase you may well have heard, the air defence system, intercepted missiles from the ground to take down those drones and missiles. as for the damage done in israel, no casualties but damage to a military base and one young girl hit by debris and receiving treatment. these are the scenes on the streets of iran, in tehran. it is seen as a retaliation because it is widely believed israel hit the iranian consulate in damascus two weeks ago. this is an unprecedented attack, iran attacking from its oil to israel, and the geographer of the region, the scale and the distance

beenin over the years, iran and israel have been in a proxying war across the region and it seems that iran had been reluctant to engage directly with israel but with this attack on the consulate, it seems that has come under pressure from its proxies in the region to flex its muscles and show some kind of force. but it was as the chief of the iranian revolution has said that only those assets who were directly involved in the attack in damascus were targeted and iran does not want to pursue this. it believes this operation is over. it went better than expected and achieved all its goals. but if israel decides to retaliate, then iran will respond with a bigger operation. iran is also threatened

that israel possesses. it will be a very cautious against any kind of major attack by israel and its allies and it seems that's why it will make this warning this morning, saying we do not want any kind of attack. even this attack was more than expected, a lot of analysts expected some kind of attack by iranian proxies or a symbolic attack, which is sort of what happened, a lot of the drones and missiles were intercepted, the hours to reach israel and iran knew that they would be intercepted and not cause any major damage but theyjust wanted to retain credibility among their supporters.— wanted to retain credibility among their supporters. thank you so much for that. we are joined by behnam ben taleblu,

exceptionally well integrated, layered system of air and missile defences like israel. so it's like going from zero to 100. while some describe this as largely symbolic, i tend to see it as a test of the functionality of some of iran's systems and as well as a test of how will israel's defences are working. and your assessment of the calculation here, as you mention, the expectation broadly was for a smaller response. what other kind of calculation is being made in tehran? iran is kind of at a fork in the road. they have one doctrine where they say that they can establish by responding in kind. they say this is to resume striking at the facility and you have seen when facing oil sanctions impeding oil shipping. but
11:39 am
since 2019, iranian officials have been talking about trying to find a way to establish overwhelming force. one line from the supreme leader was if you hit one, you receive ten. we have not seen that until right now. the desire from iran to use aerial threats like ballistic missiles and drones and fire them overtly at is really territory meant they had confidence in these systems and also were eerily confident that they could outlive any kinetic reprisal that may come. this is really the x factor, i think politics is what they were hoping for. as much of the threats of the past 1.5 weeks, they have pursed israel for the net any time since the advent of the gaza war work, time since the advent of the gaza warwork, i time since the advent of the gaza war work, i think iran is hoping this will be a restraining effect on

those turn into a regional war. what has been reported thus far is consistent with the past and consistent with the past and consistent with the past and consistent with iran's threats that, if america does intervene, they would seek to target the us and play up would seek to target the us and play up this fear to stop the cycle of escalation. up this fear to stop the cycle of escalation-— we are going to a website that tracks aeroplanes live in the sky, and you can see they are in that area where they are not flying right now, a gap between iran and israel, largely the path of those drones and missiles overnight, and clearly flights and airlines are voting that a space right now. and to let you note, we have live feeds in different parts of the region. this is the library pictures from jerusalem, and we have this live

pressure on netanyahu to respond in some fashion in response to this attack, which would spark a new cycle of escalation. what they're trying to shape is that iranian strike. 0n the iranian perspective, the most the escalator re—israeli response would be business as usual. another is really... the most escalator a strike would be an israeli attack on iranian soil, particularly against iranian nuclear facilities. their afraid that, really concerned and trying to signal that from their perspective, they will conduct no further action if israel leaves it here but there is no guarantee that will happen. interesting. can i ask about the specific tactics used here? the drones are fired, plus the missiles, the missiles, the number, the location — what's your assessment? i
11:45 am
think there are about 331 projectiles fired. 0f think there are about 331 projectiles fired. of those, about a third were ballistic ballistic ballistic missiles fly in very different ways, they fly in parabolic arcs, unlike cruise missile or drones, which fly with flight trajectories within atmosphere, much more slowly. ballistic missiles are much more likely to penetrate air defences and get through and the much less warning time. but i think it's notable that only a third of these weapons were ballistic missiles, they were probably targeted at israeli military bases, including the base israel used to launch the air 35 planes that conduct of the original attack on the iranian consulate in lebanon. there was asymmetry today but hides a run really wanted to cause more damage, to overwhelm israeli defences, i think they would have used a much higher proportion of ballistic missiles and they didn't and i think that tells us something of note.

interesting. and your outlines the potential responses through the prism of iran and what they would make a it — what do you think is likely here? one of the discussions, what are the discussions the israeli war cabinet will be happening? initially, what can we get away with a with? what will the americans backed us with? some will be sent within the war cabinet, this is what an opportunity to finally hit the iranians hard in targets where we have been wanting to hit them for use. particular carrying a nuclear programme, which has been growing in size and sophistication ever since donald trump walked away from the obama—iran nuclear deal back in 2018. the balance of voices on the other hand will be saying we need to respond in some fashion because the iranians across the line but will risk losing american support that has been so vital in creating the

shield over us, in bringing these allies with us, like the uk, france and arab countries, so we need to make this a symbolic response but not one that risk rupturing our ties with the white house. my gut feeling is that a more pragmatic line is probably going to prevail in the hours and days ahead.- probably going to prevail in the hours and days ahead. great to speak to ou, hours and days ahead. great to speak to you. thank — hours and days ahead. great to speak to you. thank you- — our international editor jeremy bowen has been looking at the potential consequences of the iranian action and says thay it indicates an escalation in the situation in the middle east. i think a lot of it depends on what israel does itself, and they are getting a lot of signals from their allies, who helped them out enormously in the course of the night, the americans giving this very strong signal, ironclad security, essentially saying, we've got your back. the british were involved, thejordanians were involved, and the israelis themselves have extremely formidable air defence capabilities.
11:48 am
so, for iran, i think it will be a bit crushing to see they got almost nothing through that net. so, the question now is, will israel decide to hit back perhaps on iranian soil? that would be a further escalation. the messages i've been getting, i was speaking to a senior western diplomat who said, it's been a long night, ourjob now is to draw a line under this. in other words, started on april the 1st, this particular episode, with the israelis — and i mean, they haven't said they've done it but they've made clear they've done it — they attacked the diplomatic compound that iran has in damascus. they killed a senior general, another senior general and a number of others in doing that, and i think the iranians interpreted that as an attack on their own soil which they had to answer. they telegraphed quite clearly that they were going to do something, so israel was ready.
11:49 am
the mobilised reserves and their air defence units. the americans were there, the brits, others. so, the western side, israel's allies, are now hoping that's the end of this particular episode, but that's not so. for iran, it's very important to try and restore a sense of deterrence. that's what their network of allies — hezbollah, others, the houthis — that's what that is all about. and clearly, the fact the israelis were able to hit very senior officer and destroy a building in the diplomatic compound and think that they could get away with it, effectively, is something that shows their deterrence was not strong. so they're trying to restore that. a usually very reliable and well—informed israeli journalist tweeted that biden has effectively said to netanyahu, you've got a victory here,
11:50 am
you look stronger, take this, bank it — that's it. and note in his response when biden, in his statement, he said we will convene the g7 for a diplomatic response to this, not we will get our allies together to see what else we can do to iran. so i think what has not changed is that the americans do not want an escalation in the middle east. upping what they're doing to iran's most powerful ally, which is hezbollah in lebanon, but a red line has been crossed. for the first time since the islamic republic started back in *79, after the revolution, the iranians have directly hit israeli soil. so, i've seen too noises coming
11:51 am
from israeli right—wingers saying, we can't let this stand, we have to respond, this is a tough neighbourhood, you can't show weakness. so, it's by no means certain that this is the end of it, that the line is going to be drawn under it. but i think that if the line is not drawn under it, then it really is a very dangerous moment. she she we will keep across the international reaction here, we expect a meeting of the g7 leaders called presidentjoe biden and we will get reaction from that. now, leaving the situation in the middle east for a moment, police in australia say the man who killed six people in a stabbing attack at a shopping centre in sydney on saturday was known to the authorities and had mental health issues. the 40—year—old, who was shot dead by police, has been identified asjoel cauchi. his family contacted police

after seeing footage of the attack on television. they've released a statement saying... prime minister anthony albanese was among those paying tribute to the five women and one man killed in the attack. 12 others were injured. among the fatalities was 38—year—old ashlee good, who was attempting to save her nine—month—old baby harriet. she handed the baby to strangers after they were both stabbed. police say the baby has undergone

surgery and herfamily say she's doing well. our sydney correspondent katy watson has more. people have been coming here throughout the day to leave flowers and pay their tributes to the victims. it's still very much an ongoing investigation, the shopping mall is still closed, its an active crime scene, and police teams are still working there. they are expected to be working there until the early hours of monday morning. more details have come out over the day — the name of the assailant, joel cauchi, 40—year—old man from queensland. in terms of motives, they are still very open—minded about exactly how and why this attack took place. authorities say that ideology wasn't identified as one of the reasons. mental health issues certainly might be playing a part in this. he was known to police. they are also exploring the line of inquiry of whether or not women were a target, given that five out of the six people who were killed were women. there have been more details,
11:54 am
of course, about the victims. ashlee good, was the mother of a nine—month—old little girl, she was killed in the attack and her daughter was also stabbed. she went to hospital, underwent surgery and the family say she is doing well. the one man who was killed in saturday's attack, he has been named as faraz tahir, a 30—year—old from pakistan, he fled persecution in pakistanjust a year ago, he was working as a security guard in the shopping centre. this is an investigation that is very much still continuing and will continue for the next weeks and months. we will return to the offence in israel overnight. we see the pictures of the attacks. we are getting continues international reaction. this from the pope, urging

a de—escalation. the pope making a pressing appeal against the spiral of violence after iran's israel attack. we have also heard from iran's foreign minister, saying a tehran that will not hesitate to defend its legitimate interests from any new aggression if necessary. iran also pointing out they consider this retaliation that they've taken has finished. this is bbc news. hello. it's going to be a lovely day for many of us. we have had lovely sunshine this morning for most parts of the uk and we will keep the dry weather and sunny spells, especially toward southern and eastern areas. this is the scene at the moment in gloucestershire.

but it will feel colder today compared to yesterday. the warmer weather we had in the south—east with 21.8 degrees in essex, that will disappear because we've got a cold air mass right across the uk, so temperatures really down on yesterday in the south—east. but some good sunshine into the afternoon. the possibility of one or two showers in north wales and northern england, more substantial rain across northern ireland and into scotland and that could be heavy and thundery throughout the afternoon with blustery winds. temperatures in scotland and northern ireland 10—12, notably cooler compared to yesterday across england and wales, 13—15. tonight, the rain across the north and west will gradually sink to the south—east. again, through the night it could be heavy and thundery for one or two of us and there will be a lot of showers through the night with temperatures down to 4—7. monday morning starting on a relatively chilly note, but for many we will see a bit

of sunshine before this weather front will bring rain spread south and east. low pressure to the north and a brisk north—westerly wind. there will be some sunshine to start off with, but this area of rain will be heavy moving south and east and it will be replaced by sunny spells and scattered showers. most frequent towards the north—west where it will be windy. showers could be wintry as well with some snow over higher ground. maximum temperatures on monday 10—12. into the rest of the week, high pressure is building out into the atlantic, and that keeps those rain—bearing weather systems largely at bay. we do have one weather system coming over the top of that, bringing some cloud and a bit of rain on tuesday towards scotland and northern ireland, and it could be wintry over higher ground. cloud and rain in eastern areas, but for most of us on tuesday, looking like a largely dry day. again some sunny spells throughout the afternoon but once again those temperatures are below average for the time of year — 10—12.
