this is bbc news, the headlines: air raid sirens. iran strikes at israel with an unprecedented attack involving more than 300 drones and missiles. the israelis say 99% were intercepted. the us, britain and jordan
1:33 pm
were among the countries involved in israel's defence. some of the missiles were intercepted outside earth's atmosphere. supporters of the iranian government take to the streets of tehran to celebrate the attack. iran warns israel not to retaliate. president biden says he'll agree a diplomatic response to the attack with other g7 leaders. the united nations security council will hold an emergency meeting later. welcome to the programme. an extraordinary diplomatic moment in the hours ahead as many ask what if anything will israel do next? we are expecting in the next few minutes the israeli war cabinet meeting to get under way and later a meeting of
1:34 pm
the g7 and the united nations security council. let's first look at what happened overnight. air raid sirens. injerusalem here, the sirens were blaring and you can see the explosions, some 300 drones and missiles launched towards israel. israel says 99% were intercepted and shut down. allies like the us and the uk helped to shoot down drones too. the damage reported by israel, no deaths, a small amount done to military base and one girl in hospital. that's a quick assessment
1:35 pm
of where we were overnight. iran placing these attacks were retaliation to what's widely believed to be israel hitting a consulate in syria and damascus two weeks ago. as to the attacks last night, ourteam weeks ago. as to the attacks last night, our team at bbc very if i have been looking at the images. for the first time ever, iran has carried out direct strikes against israel, an israeli army spokesperson said that hundreds of drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles were launched against israel from iran, yemen and iraq. 99% were intercepted and one child has reportedly been injured by shrapnel. we have verified two videos, this first one is filmed near the mosque injerusalem and this next video, you can see missiles or drones are heading for israel and air defences intercepting them. this is a still from that video i showed just now, we have matched this still with publicly available images online and we found out that this is located, filmed on the outskirts ofjerusalem.
1:36 pm
we know where this video is filmed and we are confident that these intercepts weren't overjerusalem, they appear to be to the south, possibly over the west bank. israel has said that a handful of ballistic missiles weren't intercepted and they hit an air base, here, and caused minimal damage. this is a satellite image of the base from august last year, we have several videos purporting to be of the base being hit but most of the footage was taken in the dark, and we are still working on verifying these. israel released this footage showing a jet returning to the airbase says is fully operational, we can't verify if this was from today. and we have seen footage from news agencies appearing to show what appears to be debris in amman, jordan. this is a moment of heightened tensions in the middle east as we see whether and how israel will act.
1:37 pm
at verify, we will continue to monitor the situation closely. 0ne one of the picture feeds coming into us from tel aviv, an israeli spokesperson at giving a briefing after the attack on israel. eight does not want _ after the attack on israel. eight does not want humanitarian - after the attack on israel. e grit does not want humanitarian deal and the return of the hostages. hamas and the iranian paymasters want to escalate the region. israel will realise the objectives of the war with hamas with full force and leave no stone unturned to return the 133 hostages being held in gaza against their will. a crime against humanity. that's the end of the briefing today, i would take your questions in the chat box is
1:38 pm
always... questions in the chat box is always- - -— questions in the chat box is alwa s... , . ., always... just a little taste of what was _ always... just a little taste of what was happening, - always... just a little taste of what was happening, we - always... just a little taste of what was happening, we will| always... just a little taste of i what was happening, we will be keeping a cross out for you if any new lines come out of that briefing and we will bring them straight to you. the british prime minister has given his reaction to last night's attacks and explained the role the uk played. last night, iran launched a barrage of missiles and attack drones across the middle east towards israel. this was a dangerous and unnecessary escalation, which i've condemned in the strongest terms. thanks to an international coordinated effort, which united kingdom participated in, almost all of these missiles were intercepted, saving lives notjust in israel but in neighbouring countries likejordan as well. the raf sent additional planes to the region as part of our existing operations to counter daesh in iraq and syria. i can confirm our planes shot down a number of iranian attack drones. i want to pay tribute to the bravery and professionalism of our pilots flying into the face of danger
1:39 pm
to protect civilians. joining me now from downing street is our news correspondent, azadeh moshiri. talk us through what we learned there about the role of the uk here. the key thing we learned there is that the prime minister confirmed that the prime minister confirmed that rafjets did shoot down a number of iranian drones, though we don't know how many. the big message he was sending is to reiterate the idea of calm heads prevailing, the idea of calm heads prevailing, the idea of calm heads prevailing, the idea of restrained. we have heard that echoed by the labour leader sir keir starmer as well. even in talking about that g7 leaders meeting later today, talks about he would continue to urge for calm. that's because there is this big risk of the situation escalating. he, as was his counterpart in the united states job he, as was his counterpart in the united statesjob item, it will be
1:40 pm
keeping in mind what iran and said, that should there be any response from israel to what they consider as a measure taken in self defence, then iran would retaliate in a way that we haven't seen before. keeping in mind that this entire episode has been unprecedented in the first place. been unprecedented in the first lace. , . been unprecedented in the first lace. ., ., been unprecedented in the first lace. . ., ., ., been unprecedented in the first nlace. . ., ., ., ., place. gave us a flavour now of what ha--ens place. gave us a flavour now of what happens in — place. gave us a flavour now of what happens in turns _ place. gave us a flavour now of what happens in turns of— place. gave us a flavour now of what happens in turns of diplomacy. - place. gave us a flavour now of what happens in turns of diplomacy. that | happens in turns of diplomacy. that this is global diplomacy now. are just as we were talking, we've heard from the eu foreign policy chief josep borrell, calling for a meeting of foreign affairs minister on tuesday saying that the effort is to contribute to de—escalation and security of the region. that is on tuesday but there are diplomatic efforts going on today as well, the united nations security council and rishi sunak will be taking part in this meeting of the g7. tell us
1:41 pm
about that. this meeting of the g7. tell us about that-— this meeting of the g7. tell us about that. ~ ,,., , * , about that. absolutely. as the prime minister said — about that. absolutely. as the prime minister said earlier, _ about that. absolutely. as the prime minister said earlier, this _ about that. absolutely. as the prime minister said earlier, this is - about that. absolutely. as the prime minister said earlier, this is all- minister said earlier, this is all being a part of an international, coordinated efforts, as he put it. that g7 meeting happening at later on is an effort to have a diplomatic response. again, that word diplomacy keeps coming up, restraints, calm. as far as they see it, the priority now is to make sure the situation doesn't escalate. rishi sunak talked earlier on about avoiding any further bloodshed in the region. it seems it all these allies are all on the same page in they want whatever response that there will be because they have all condemned the attack, they have all condemned the attack, they want it that responds to be restrained, they want it to be a diplomatic response, not a military one. understanding that should there be a back—and—forth here, we're really talking about the scenario that world leaders have been trying
1:42 pm
to avoid ever since this war began in gaza. now the question mark and why these meetings at the un is so important, the question mark is about what israel will do it because they have vowed a response. thank ou. events overnight have reframed the calculation in the middle east and a little earlier, i spoke to our security correspondent frank gardner and firstajeremy bowen, our international editor. the message coming from israel's western allies, the americans and the british — rishi sunak has just said that britain was also involved in shooting down drones and that this is now time for cool heads. in other words, the message to israel, you've got a victory here, hang on to it, do not escalate any further because the risks of escalating, maybe a strike back onto iranian territory, are very great.
1:43 pm
israel has sustained serious attack but with a great deal of help from its allies, it has been able to withstand it. it was not a full—on assault in perhaps the way it would have been had hezbollah and lebanon joined in with their massive store of missiles over the years that the iranians have helped them build up. your broad thoughts on where exactly the region stands now, frank? if you imagine a ladder with a lot of different rungs, where halfway up that ladder of escalation. israel could choose to go up it or down it because, right now, we've seen a number of escalations, red lines crossed, and this is certainly a red line and it's the first time that iran and israel have fired at each other, in this case iran shooting directly at israel. despite the fact that restraint
1:44 pm
is being urged on all sides, israel's war cabinet is going to look for a significant response. it could bide its time, strategic patience, could hit back at iran's proxies such as hezbollah and others around the region. it could target the exact missile bases from which these drones and missiles were launched in iran. that would be an escalation. or if you go further and do an all—out attack on revolutionary guard bases throughout iran, that would be a major escalation and one that would prompt a massive iranian response. that is not what anyone in the region wants, everyone is calling for the situation to calm down but i don't think israel is going to let this one go, as it were. jeremy, your thoughts on the lines coming from iran saying that this current action is finished,
1:45 pm
to describe it as a defensive action but if there any more attacks, will respond. let's rewind to the 1st of april, that's when the attack took place on the iranian diplomatic compound in damascus, killing senior officers and generals but more importantly for the iranians, hitting the ground they consider to be iranian soil. the israelis have made an unconvincing argument that the presence of those officers in the building rendered it not a diplomatic premise but a military position that it was ok to hit. that is not a convincing argument. iran made it very clear they would respond. question, how were they going to do it? the suggestion was they would do something oblique and indirect but they have opted
1:46 pm
for this full—on attack. the attack did not do a great deal of damage, is that because they assumed, having signalled so clearly that they were going to do it, israel, the americans, the brits and others could get ready, or was it because they are simply not up to hurting israel with its formidable air defences and allies? where we are is a time of great uncertainty and the rules of the game in the middle east have changed since the hamas attack of october the 7th. so we have israeli attack, iranian response, what will israel do next? we are in unknown territory here but i think it's absolutely clear that if a way is not found to stop this steady escalation into a wider all—out war in the middle east, it will keep going in that direction, which would be catastrophic for all concerned.
1:47 pm
we will come back to the what happens next question in a moment. frank, on what did happen, what do you make of the combination of the missiles and the drones? how have israel and their allies responded in a technical way to shoot down so many, 300+, from the skies? israel had a massive advantage in that it knew it was coming. the us had signalled this as of wednesday night, that it intercepted communication using its powerful signals intelligence network. the attack came in two phases, 170 drones were launched but they are quite slow, they take several hours to reach israel across the i500km distance between iran and israel. but iran also launched ballistic missiles, one of which was intercepted outside
1:48 pm
the earth's atmosphere. they are intercepted in a number of different ways. you mention to the iron dome there, the air defence system that has been shooting down a lot of rockets fired from gaza, for example, one by one. it also has things called the arrow and the david slingshot and the patriot. but it was helped by the united states and the uk and jordan. jordan said it intercepted a number of flying objects that entered its territory, that is iranian missiles and drones. the raf, which was already operating along the borders of syria and iraq to counter any kinds of advance or resurgence of so—called islamic states, isis, they also shot down a number of drones, so they would have gone quite a circuitous route. and the us navy, which has powerful
1:49 pm
warships in the red sea, they shot down some and some of theirjets took off. and also israeli air force fighters took off from an airbase in the south to shoot them down. so it was a coordinated thing. highly expensive, one estimate saying that this may have cost israel up to $1 billion. but israel is now patting itself on its back, saying, we defeated this. make no mistake, iran has a massive arsenal of missiles, it has a whole lot more where these came from. jeremy, where do we go from here? with the meeting of the war cabinet in israel, the g7 convening, what does happen next? interesting that whenjoe biden talked about convening the g7, they will all be in front of computer screens, he talked about a diplomatic response.
1:50 pm
that is clearly what he wants. but israel's war cabinet has many times in the last six months defied the will ofjoe biden. will they regard this issue as one in which they are able to do that or will they feel, because of the enormous amounts of help that they got last night, they owe their allies one and they need to pull in their spikes in terms of confronting them? i did notice very early on that right—wing voices in israel, those voices in the government that are sustained by those votes, were calling for a response, not responding would be weak, if israel does not respond it will be seen as weak and attacked again. that is a debate they will be having in israel — do what the brits and americans and others want or push back hard.
