hello there and welcome along to sportsday. it's all set up for fascinating title run in, that will go right down to the wire — after arsenal came away with a 1—0 win at manchester united. after arsenal came away with a 1—0 the gunners hadn't won at old trafford for four years — but mikel arteta's title challenge relied on getting a result against their famous old enemies. patrick gearey reports. this time it was only crucial to one of the teams. when it mattered, they were sharper. lando truss art has a habit of scoring important goals which at this stage, they all are. the control that arsenal have on games, the second might have sealed

this but chances were rare. they backed themselves to continue noted, stricken by injuries were willing. just wayward. even so, for arsenal it was worried with the stakes so high they wanted reassurance about andre onana denied them that comfort. as the end drew near a storm broke. something dramatic in the air but anti—climatic on the ground. home if not dry, whatever happens they will squeeze manchester city until the very last drop. patrick gary, bbc news. so arsenal's title challenge remains on. they know city will win the league if they win all their remaining games, starting with their trip to tottenham hotspur on tuesday, but arsenal boss mikel arteta has been pleased with his sides consistency this season. the players have a huge price, most of them they haven't been in this position. they don't know what it is and what is the stake in how you feel emotionally to go and having to

a really dominant display. united have experience of a final before, they got big players for the occasion, perhaps no—one more so then ella tune. screamer at half—time, she scored for england in the euros final, she absolutely loves playing at wembley and that set her team on their way. rachel williams who had been a danger in the air all game, doubled united's lead. and i suppose it really did start to unravel after that unfortunately for them. becky spencer who is usually so reliable with her feet made a mistake that gifted united a third and then lucia
7:36 pm
garcia who was fantastic all game, scored united's fourth. it was brilliant, brutal from them. and it's helped secure their first major piece of silverware. i think after they've underwhelmed in the wsl this has saved their season but also mainly provided a platform for them to go on to bigger and better things and provide that chance for a new era and a breakthrough. well, let's hear now from the victorious manager marc skinner, on what the win meant for him and his team. it's a feeling, if i could bottle it i would keep it forever. not as important as kids though, my family are still more important. it means a lot to me to produce for ourfans. me as a person, i'm quite humble and we showed all those values today, all the values of a manchester united team and for every manchester united fan in the world, that's for you. for the team and united on the whole, this is a really big win for them, isn't it? how important would it be for their future with this major trophy in the bag?
7:37 pm
i think that is an important question because there has been a lot of speculation around the future of their top stars, players like goalkeeper mary earps, she's been at the club for five years, there is speculation she could leave the club. they all hope that this win, the silverware perhaps persuades her to stay. her contract is up in the summer along with marc skinner, the manchester united manager. after the game today he was also asked whether he thought, given what happened, if mary earps would stay and he said "it helps me, mary and i have a great relationship, and of course i would love her to stay.". they want to build a team around her, they want to challenge more for the lead, but mark skinner very much would but marc skinner very much would think those talks could wait for now, they want to enjoy the greatest a big day for teams on the hunt for promotion to the premier league today, with the first leg of the

championship playoff semi—finals — leeds, norwich, west brom and southampton — all in action, looking to restore former glories. alex fletcher reports. two sides with premier league pedigree, experiencing playoff pressure. southampton with the first chance, karl walker —eters not too far away. west brom were quick to respond. closing in! carlos koberan getting animated, the ten second half opened up, again causing southampton problems. but the visitors still looked dangerous on the counterattack. stuart, deflected! a vital save at a vital time to keep the scores level, a second leg to come, this one leaving the fans with plenty to ponder.
7:39 pm
you could forgive the leeds united nerves in east anglia, five playoff campaigns without promotion. attempting to change that narrative, the finest of margins denying him a penalty. josh sergeant had norwich*st chance, rising to meet jack stacy's cross, but lacking the required direction. leads that have the ball in the net, coming to the home side rescue. it was 17 points but separated these two on the final day, now they had to elland road, level pegging. alex fletcher, bbc news. celtic remain top of the scottish women's premier league, with two games left to play, and improved their already—strong goal difference today. amy gallacher, murphy agnew and mengyu shen with the goals, in their 3—0 win over partick thistle. in their 3—0 win over partick thistle, to keep them in driving seat as the season comes to an exciting finale with two games left to play. and despite their advantage they're not taking matters for granted.
7:40 pm
our mentality is that nothing is going to be handed to us. we try our very best to bring positive energy to the camp because it's been a long, hard season, and the heat plays a massive part in it. focus at getting the job done but what's really important is the because we are tired, everybody knows we are tired but we have to keep going. glasgow city's chances of defending their title are over though, with rangers keeping pressure on celtic thanks to a 1—0 win. this from rachel maclauchlan was enough to seal a 1—0 win for the visitors. with just two games remaining and 76 points apiece, celtic are only ahead of rangers on goal difference. you got to take those moments, you are quite at it today, we was up you got to take those moments, you weren't quite at it today, we was up against it with a few outside factors. but you know, you take those moments and i said before the game, asked for some players to step up and be accountable and rachel was

still out one there and stepped up with a great strike and get three points for us. real madrid have been parading the la liga trophy around the spanish capital today. it's their 36th league title, and they celebrated in madrid, despite having four more league games to go, and a champions league final to look ahead to against borussia dortmund next month. it's the second time their boss carlo ancelotti has won the spanish top flight title. lauren price says she is already aiming to unify the women's welterweight division, after winning the wba, ibo and ring magazine world titles in only her seventh professional fight. price, who you might remember won gold at the tokyo olympics, is a former kickboxing world champion and international footballer. an accidental clash of heads in the fifth round saw champion mccaskill unable to continue beyond the eighth. as a result the judges awarded price the win on points. i was an eight—year—old girl once and kelly inspired me and kelly holmes inspired me for the olympics.

if you work hard enough, you can achieve anything. i said i had a great camp but this is years of dedication and hard work but if you put it in, you can achieve your dreams and achieve anything. london broncos have failed to put up much of a fight this season, but today, they have won their first match of the super league season, at the 11th time of asking. the broncos produced an assured performance at home to beat hull 34—18. they scored six tries, including this brilliant run from hakim miloudi from 20 yards inside his own half to allow alex walker to go over the line. broncos, despite victory, remain bottom of the table. in rugby union, gloucester hartpury were comfortable winners in the women's premiership. they beat loughborough lightning by 61 points to 26. nevejones with the try here that maintains gloucester*s strong lead in the division, nine points clear of saracens in second. loughborough are sixth. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today.

as mens world number one novak djokovic has been knocked out of the italian open in the third round by chilean alejandro tabilo. djokovic said he felt hampered by the after—effects of an accident where he was hit on the head by bottle this week. tabilo tookjust over an hour to win. lydia campbell was watching. know that djokovich is a six time winner of the italian open, so these fans were expecting a routine victory up against the world's 36, tabilo. soon he had the opening set wrapped up, his first time facing the world number one was going very well. unfortunately for djokovic, things didn't get much better in the second. more double faults early on, once again broken in the first game and the chilean was

just too hot to handle for djokovic. soon he was serving to stay in the match. but the day finished exactly how it started — a fifth double fault for djokovic, handing tabilo the biggest win of his career. lydia campbell, bbc news. the surf after the defeat, djokovic confirmed he'll undergo medical tests, saying he felt the effects of being struck on the head by a water bottle at the tournament earlier this week. the serb was accidentally hit as he signed autographs

following his second—round win over corentin moutet on friday, falling to the ground and in some discomfort. no rhythm, no tempo, no balance whatsoever on any shot so it's a bit concerning. so while djokovic went out, there were no worries for aryna sabalenka in the women's draw. the second seed eased past dayana yastremska in straight sets to reach the last—i6. the 26—year—old, who labelled the event in rome as her "dream tournament" to win, equalled iga swiatek for the most wta—iooo wins since 2018 she will face either former champion elina svitolina or anna kalinskaya next. dutch sprinter olav kooij produced a perfectly—timed finish to win stage nine of the giro d'italia in naples stage one winner jhonatan narvaez looked to have stolen victory but the ecuadorean was caught in the final 100 metres, as kooij claimed his first grand tour stage victory. britain's geraint thomas was involved in a crash before the run into naples, but recovered to finish among the peloton and remains in third place overall. great britain suffered an 8—0 defeat at the ice hockey world championship against second seeds finland. it follows a 11—2 opening loss to raining champions

canada on saturday. the result has left britain bottom of their group ahead of their next match against switzerland on wednesday. there was an exciting finale to this year's badminton horse trials which had a particularly influential showjumping phase. the winner, new zealand's caroline powell achieved one of only two clear rounds, to move up from sixth place and clinch the sports biggest prize. lizzie greenwood—hughes was there for us. this has just been the most extraordinary badminton, it went right down to the wire. all three phases of this equestrian triathlon have been influential and the showjumping, the final part, was particularly so. only two clear rounds, one of been by this lady, caroline powell. no offence, but we didn't see that coming, how do you feel about winning bandwidth and for the first time?
7:48 pm
thought the third might be where we ended up, but to win it was just amazing. she isjust the most amazing mare and i'm so proud of her. how long ago did you win burnley, how long ago was that? 2010? it's been a long time since you've had a horse this good. as paris is around the corner, are you making a late bid to get on that? i don't know, she still got to go home and be sound and have a holiday and go back to work. it would be absolutely amazing but also going to burnley would be amazing, whatever way she goes we want the best for her. so much pressure on your shoulders, so many riders still to go and it's in reverse order, the last writer potentially everyone after could have won a trophy but you managed to hold it together, at what was going to your mind? we were down in sixth so the pressure wasn't as great as you go in the lead. it's well within her capabilities and she came good for us today. caroline, you've won burnley, you've won badminton, you won two big ones, huge congratulations, go and enjoy it. caroline powell for new zealand,
7:49 pm
second place went to an irish writer, she's only got one horse, she came second, she could have won caroline powell for new zealand, second place went to an irish rider she's only got one horse, she came second, she could have won it she gone clear but sadly she had a fence down. great britain had their place. very exciting, a little bit unusual in the lead up because of all the weather we've had, all the writers haven't had, all the riders haven't maybe had the preparation they normally would have done, we would normally have a briton in the first second or third place, but caroline powell as i say, for new zealand, is the winner here at this years badminton and as far as british writers and as far as british riders are concerned paris is next, they will know who is selected to represent the country at the end ofjune, but that's it from me here at badminton. back to football now. and the shortlists for the premier league player, young player and manager of the year were released this week.
7:50 pm
a city player has won the award in each of the past four seasons, so will they make it five? well, the football news show looked at those nominated, and who may win the individual awards. the nominees for the end of season awards, michael brown has been mulling over them. let's talk about player of the season and a lots of good nominees. is anybody missing? there's always somebody missing, isn't it? i don't feel at times the players at the bottom half of the premier league get recognition they deserve because their team is not in that position so there will be many good performances lower down, even luton town saw some good performances as well, maybe some players would stand out, if you talk about issac getting better and better, rodrick would be one where you would say, why do we keep mentioning that when i carry on with these nominees, but declan rice has been incredible. and you saw what moye said about his team, they have had a wonderful relation
7:51 pm
come, you know where i'm going with this, right? declan rice probably the stand out performer, for me just of what he's changed, but it's still foden. was he was brought is flair, he brought goals, brought assists, playing a different positions as well, by the way. notjust played from the right, play central, play off the left, different performances, different positions. so i got to say some are missing but phil foden is obviously leading the way. let's look at nominees for young player of the season. michael, who gets your vote? you seen that crossover which is really exciting about those young players in both categories. but you know, the stand up for me has got to be cole palmer. i think the returning goals and the chelsea side that have been so inconsistent, i think it's that or about him.
7:52 pm
i think it's that aura about him. i knew he was going to be a good player, when he started coming through at manchester city than to go to chelsea, matured so well in a difficult side and a wonderful go returner, and a wonderful goal returner, all types of different goals. in a position where england, we've got lots of competition in the euros this summer, almost forced him into the starting xi isn't it? the starting 11 isn't it? we were asked a long time ago to name our england 11 and i put him on the left and i think a few people went like really? can cole palmer be out there? i think he's now earned the right. i'm hoping i get this right, i don't get too many right, ben, but he has earned the right and it's where you play in the phil foden debate as well, at this moment in time if we are talking about form it depends what southgate does with that extra midfield player. whether they get foden in there, sackur as well is one on the other side.
7:53 pm
five nominees for managers of the season. three players in the same youth team. who has had the best season in your opinion? i think you have to look and sort of say, they all had a slow start, he could have left the job and his return since the turn of november has been incredible for the way he's played come out the way he took his team on. jurgen klopp a sad ending when you thought about what he could have. a wonderful array of trophies, array of performances we've seen from him, he's going to be a sad miss. still in the mix as always, the are to do, he's kicked that team on, to another level. he is certainly in the mix and then you go emory, how is he's managed to get aston villa into that top four, champions league, i think that's a great return. european competitions, tottenham and really fire, just couldn't get them over the line, that's adopting with the squad game stronger and stronger. and is going to depend.
7:54 pm
you're asking me today if pep guardiola wins four in a row premier league titles, it's something that's based on success, and unfortunately for everybody else, you don't always win things that you possibly could have because if you've got a man in pep guardiola for in a row it's hard not to give him the title if that's what he delivers. if you're not giving it to emory, but could emory have done more this season to win the title? i don't think he could have done more. he was right into the level but unfortunately in an industry and a sport, performance—based, how can the person who has delivered four premier leagues in a row not get manager of the season? i know you'll say we expected that from pep and his team and what he's done, but we've never seen that before, but ultimately unfortunately because it's the trophy, because it's the title, if he can do that, that would obviously give him the nod and make a manager of the season.
7:55 pm
now, you may have seen sports stopped by dogs or cats running onto the field of play... but how about this? in a baseball game between the st lucie mets and bradenton pirates, a turtle made it's way onto the pitch and halted play. they say slow and steady wins the race, but this turtle must have had turbo turned on, and tried to evade the outfielders, before eventually being taken off the field safely. a reminder of our top story on sportsday, arsenal are back to the top of the premier league after beating manchester united 1—0 at old trafford. they're a point ahead of manchester city, who have a game in hand against tottenham on tuesday, and then it's the final weekend of the season in a week's time, when arsenal host everton, and city welcome west ham. and from disappointment for manchester united's men, to elation for the women's team. a reminder, that they won the women's fa cup at wembley today, beating tottenham hotspur 4—0.
7:56 pm
plenty more reaction to that on the bbc sport website and app. that's it for me here on sports they thanks for watching and we will see you again next time. hello. as the weekend draws to an end, so does the generally dry and very warm weather. storms have been breaking out across western parts of the uk and that pretty much sets the scene for the week ahead. it's going to be more unsettled and not quite as warm. and this evening and overnight, it's an area of low pressure is approaching us and that spells rain for some of us on monday. but more recently, it's been about the storms and here are the lightning strikes on the satellite image and see across northern ireland, southwestern parts of the uk
7:57 pm
western scotland too — no storms further east or south. and through the evening we will have seen these storms, local downpours, flash flooding in places moving northwards and towards the east. but in some areas, we still have clear skies tonight. and guess what? i know that last night was disappointing, but tonight, if you're inclined to have a look, there is a chance of seeing a faint aurora almost anywhere in the uk, say between around 11pm and 2am, if you're inclined to. i know we're going to work first thing. now, here's monday's forecast. so, we start the day with some hazy sunshine, temperatures 10—13 degrees. outbreaks of rain with this weather front sweeping into cornwall, devon, wales through ireland into the irish sea, but never reaches at least during the day, eastern parts of the country here, some hazy skies and very warm — 23 in norwich, hull and also newcastle, much fresher with that cloud of rain towards the west. about 15 celsius and it's a slow—moving weather front, and one of the reasons is because this low pressure
7:58 pm
kind of stalled here. it's not really moving anywhere. so the weather front is rotating around and back into the center of the low, and that means that on tuesday, it's eastern areas that are stuck underneath the cloud and the outbreaks of rain probably not as persistent by that stage — bigger gaps in the clouds. i think by that stage, we have some sunny spells, but i think lower temperatures for all of us. and this is more or less bang on the average, be it a little on the high side. still, i think for parts of scotland now, that low will eventually kind of rain itself out as we go through the week and the possibility of high pressure moving back in again. but i think overall, if we look at the weather icons, i think shower clouds most days on average temperatures, i think in the south, typically in the high teens. that's it for me. thanks for watching.
