conversational chatbot, gpt—lm, that can be sarcastic and flirt, to google�*s ai—powered assistant that can even help find your lost glasses. and now microsoft has revealed its latest offering — more on that in a moment. but amid such rapid change, should we be more cautious? eu member states have approved a law to regulate the use of artificial intelligence. the legislation which, the eu says, is first of its kind in the world, bans some uses of ai such as the police use of applications to profile people by race, religion or sexual orientation. it also aims to tighten rules for other uses, according to risk posed. at the global ai safety summit in south korea, a number of ai companies have signed an undertaking

to develop ai systems responsibly. they include google, amazon, meta, microsoft and openai. joining us now is bbc technology journalist chris vallance, who's in our edinburgh studio. tell us a bit more about this agreement? the summit is a follow—up to the summit in november at bletchley park, and its aim essentially is to continue that work. it is a two—day summit, the start of it virtually attended by prime minister rishi sunak and his south korean counterpart. the second day brings together digital ministers, and they will look at a range of issues including things like the environmental impact of ai, issues of bias, the impact onjobs, which is interesting because the focus on the bletchley park summit was the catastrophic scenarios. those particular items on the agenda much

our north america business correspondent, michelle fleury, has all the details. the future of the pc may be here. microsoft announced new conversational artificial intelligence features for windows pcs and a line of surface tablet computers. one of the features dubbed recall is designed to help you find anything that you viewed on your pc in the past. recall helps you instantly find anything you've ever seen on your pc before, all using natural language to simply describe those clues that you remember. there's also a live translation of 44 languages into english and something for creative types. for example, as you draw in microsoft paint, ai generates an image based on your sketch. now, these tools are all powered with new ai chips from qualcomm to deliver longer battery life. and all of this matters because today most ai software runs in the cloud, which uses a lot of energy. being able to work on the device thanks to more processing power.

well, that not only improves data security, it's also more climate—friendly. microsoft is betting its new ai tricks will help kick start a new era of pc sales. the uk "is approaching a soft landing" after last year's mild recession, but could face a £30 billion hole in the public finances, according to the international monetary fund's health check of the british economy. the imf upgraded growth forecasts for this year from 0.5% to 0.7%, but pointed to "difficult choices" on tax and spending in the next parliament. the report warns against tax cuts while the uk faces what it calls a "medium—term fiscal challenge". the imf said it "would have recommended against the national insurance cuts, given their significant cost." joining us now is suren thiru, economics director at the institute of chartered accountants

cars were imported into the us with components made by the banned chinese firm jwd. now, this company was added to a us entity list back in 2023, which means its products are presumed to be made by using forced labour. now, this report also found that jaguar land rover had imported spare parts, which included components that were made by jwd after the company was put on this banned list. however, it also says that the car—maker is destroying any stock it holds around the world that includes these parts. also, back in february, vw said that thousands of its vehicles, including porsches and bentleys, had been held by authorities because they had a component in them that breached america's anti—forced—labour laws. vw has voluntarily informed customers, customs officials, rather, about the issue. now, these three car—makers did not immediately respond to requests for comments from the bbc.

in other news... the drug maker glaxosmithkline has been sued by an independent lab in connecticut that accused gsk of defrauding the us government by concealing cancer risks in zantac, once a common heartburn drug. in a whistle—blower complaint, filed on monday, valisure said gsk violated the federal false claims act by hiding the risks for nearly four decades. in a statement, gsk said it will defend against what it called a "meritless lawsuit". singapore airlines says that one passenger onboard a flight from london died and several others were injured when the plane encountered severe turbulence. the flight, which was bound for singapore, was forced to make an emergency landing in bangkok. 0ur south east asia correspondentjonathan head is on the line.

hello, from the bbc sport centre. i'm betty glover. burnley manager vincent kompany has emerged as a surprise candidate for the bayern munich job. bayern have struggled to find a replacement for thomas tuchel, whose exit was confirmed last week after initially being announced in february. kompany, who led burnley to the premier league last season, wasn't able to keep them up this year despite high expectations.

he of course spent time in the bundesliga as a player at hamburg, so knows the league well and speaks german. now the news australia didn't want to hear — it's been confirmed that the matildas will definitely be without their star striker sam kerr for the paris 0lympics, in just over two months�* time. she's recovering from an anterior curciate ligament injury, which she got during chelsea's training camp injanuary. kerr is australia's all—time record goal—scorer. she's one of several key matildas players sidelined by injury. meanwhile, bbc sport understands that chelsea are set to announce lyon boss sonia bompastor as their new manager after the champions league final this weekend. the 43—year—old is lined up to replace emma hayes — but is aiming to bow out at lyon on a high, as they're going for their ninth champions league title against barcelona on saturday. an announcement is expected after the showpiece event, and bompastor�*s assistant manager, camille abily, will also join her in west london.
