hello and welcome to sportsday — and the premier league managerialfallout continues, following the finish to the season. chelsea announced on tuesday that manager mauricio pochettino has left the club by mutual consent. he was in charge forjust one season. the argentinian was under pressure after an underwhelming first half of the campaign — but had managed to turn things around somewhat, and finished the season in the top six. chelsea were also runners—up in the league cup and reached the semi—finals of the fa cup. pochettino was chelsea's sixth permanent manager in five years. in england, he previously also managed tottenham and southampton — but is yet to win a domestic trophy. earlier, i caught up with bbc 5live�*s senior football

reporter ian dennis who told me the news could come as some surprise. they finished with five successive wins and pochettino secured european football for chelsea for next season so on the surface it may seem a little odd. i wonder if there may be some chelsea fans baffled by this, given pochettino�*s history with tottenham there may be some who are not too upset to see the back of him but given how well they did at the end of the season and just starting to click into place i think there may be some wondering what is next, what do the owners want from chelsea because pochettino did salvage it against all odds for european football next season. where do you think the decision has come from? there was speculation but effectively it has kind of come out of the blue, really, on a tuesday night. i was told going into the weekend that final game of the season that pochettino was still unsure of his future. and then i think there has been discussions which i am led

to believe and i'm told have been amicable over the course of the last day or two between pochettino and the sporting direct is that it was decided it was in the best interests for chelsea to take this decision. and from what i can gather, pochettino was more than happy with that and his entire coaching staff have also departed stamford bridge. what next for the club? were they linked to and who are they thinking about bringing in? where they go next will be fascinating given the fact that under this regime they have sacked thomas tuchel and graham potter and now they have parted ways with pochettino so whoever does go in will go into it with his eyes wide open i imagine knowing the expectation levels at stamford bridge will be extremely high.

however, what they will be walking into is a club that clearly backs their manager when you look at the amount of money they spent, they have an array of youngsters notably cole palmer, who are very exciting, they have european football to look forward to so i would think that somebody such as kieran mckenna of ipswich town, a young progressive manager will be on their raider and not necessarily convinced that di serbi would be. i know he recently left brighton and hove and people may be trying to put two and two together. but whoever does go in at stamford bridge is going to obviously have to try and better what pochettino has achieved this time. well under pochettino�*s time at chelsea, the club spent more than £400 million on players — and in his 51 games in charge, he managed to win 27 of those — with 14 losses, and 10 draws. the west london side spent the majority of the season in the bottom

half of the table, but as ian said just now — they massively improved towards the end, finishing the season sixth — but still a huge 28 points behind eventual champions manchester city. they could still find themselves in the europa league next season. whilst there has been speculation over pochettino�*s future, the news still comes as a shock to many fans. i am surprised and a bit disappointed as well. when you look at the way the results have gone in the last four or five games after the arsenal result it looked like things were starting to turn around. the long—term idea was to bring the kids along the team for the future and we thought that was what would happen. no idea that this would happen today and yes, very surprised. how do you | think most fans will feel about | this news? is there a sense the club are making a bit of progress under pochettino towards the end of the year? most supporters i think will be surprised and most wanted him to stay. obviously there were a

few who did not but ijust don't understand it, personally. we've always been a club that doesn't put up with failure, but this was not failure, this this this was saying that we were heading into the future and ijust don't get it. the americans have come in and done it their way and unfortunately it has alienated a few people at the moment this will not help. and the new manager who is in the frame of mind in your opinion, to the fans might want? there are a few names around at the moment and many clubs changing managers after the season. the ipswich manager | has been bandied about. i thinkl what we do need if we have the choice, i think we would like somebody who has been there and done it rather than somebody who is coming up through the ranks. i think we need that at the moment. someone who is strong, can come in and get hold of it again.

less than a month till the football european championship in germany. and today, the england manager gareth southgate has named his 33—man training squad — which gets whittled down to 26 a week before the tournament starts. it doesn't include experienced heads likejordan henderson, raheem sterling and marcus rashford — with the manchester united striker struggling for form, scoring just seven goals in thirty three league appearances. rashford has played for england seven times this season before being left out of the squad for a friendly against belgium in march and now he misses out altogether ahead of a major tournament. of course these are different and difficult calls, we are talking about very good players who have been an important part of what we have done over a number of years. so with marcus i just feel that other players in that area of the pitch have had a better season it is as simple as that. this has been as complicated a group as i can remember picking and we've had

a few complicated ones. as i say, i think we can make better decisions and we have time so there are moments where time does not help you to make a better decision but in this instance it will. burnley manager vincent kompany has emerged as a surprise candidate for the bayern munich job. bayern have struggled to find a replacement for thomas tuchel, whose exit was confirmed last week. kompany, who led burnley to the premier league last season, wasn't able to keep them up this year despite high expectations. he spent time in the bundesliga, as a player at hamburg — so knows the league well and speaks german. germany and real madrid midfielder toni kroos has anounced he will retire from football after this summers european championships. kroos has won multiple trophies in a glittering career including the champions league on four occasions with real madrid and the world cup with germany in 2014. he could still end his career with two more titles, with real in the champions league final — before joining up with the germany squad.

the news australia didn't want to hear — it's been confirmed that the matildas will be without their star striker sam kerr for the paris olympics, in just over 2 months' time. the chelsea striker is still recovering from a anterior cruciate ligament injury, which happened during her club's training camp injanuary. kerr is australia's all—time record goalscorer. she's one of several key matildas players sidelined by injury. cricket now — and england's limited—overs side are in action tomorrow — for the first time since their disappointing defence of the world cup last year. they start a four—match t20 series against pakistan at headingley, their only preparation before their defence of the t20 world cup begins in barbados next month. bowler mark wood and all—rounder liam livingstone will miss the match because of knee issues but fast bowlerjofra archer is set to make his first england appearance since march, and captainjos buttler is delighted to see

so tomorrow's forecast then. this is the morning — a widespread area of rain. we'll zoom in and see what's happening around three or four in the afternoon. by that stage, the heaviest of the rain will have cleared east anglia, the southeast and along the southern counties, blustery winds and occasional showers. so here's that persistent rain from the midlands, wales, the north of england, pretty much almost everywhere. that rain isjust nudging into southern scotland. more showery, though, across the highlands. look at northern ireland — escapes most of the rain. if anything, that rain should reach you later in the afternoon. probablyjust into the east of northern ireland. now, this is an area of low pressure that's parked itself in the north sea and that weather front will just spiral around the centre of the low. so in some areas, the rain will keep falling in the same place for a couple of days, so really a substantial amount of rainfall is possible. now, by thursday, the rain will be not quite as heavy and it will be more patchy, but i think a lot of cloud and at least a chance of encountering some rain on thursday. best of the weather in the south and the southeast of east anglia. in norwich, london,

portsmouth and plymouth, it could be cool. it could end up being a fairly bright and sunny day, but cool. how much rain? a lot. the teal colours in the pennines and northern england could indicate ao—somm of rain. but the met office is suggesting in extreme case, we could have as much as 100mm of rain or more, and that would lead to some flooding. here's the good news as we head towards the end of the week and the weekend. the weather will slowly settle down and there are indications as we go into the weekend in bank holiday monday, we are going to have primarily dry and bright weather with just a scattering of showers. some good news for you there. bye— bye.
