7:30 pm
now on bbc news, it's the sport with paul. welcome to sportsday. i'm paul scott at a busy bbc sport centre on a day of cup finals. here's what's coming up. wembley turns red — manchester united beat rivals manchester city to lift the fa cup. but what next for boss erik ten hag? i'm at hampden, as celtic lift the scottish cup after a last—minute goal against rivals rangers. elsewhere, a swan song — or perhaps not. on the eve of the tournament, rafael nadal refuses to say if this is his final french open.
7:31 pm
also coming up on sportsday: for this first time this season, max verstappen won't lead the grid as he misses out on the record for consecutive poles, after a bad afternoon in monaco for the world champion. welcome to the programme. it was a repeat of last year's fa cup final — but as you can see, a different result. despite facing difficult questions about the future of boss erik ten hag, his manchester united side denied rivals manchester city from securing a league and cup double by winning 2—1 at wembley. our sports correspondent natalie pirks has the story. familiar foes with vastly different fortunes. as reports intensified about the fate of manchester united's manager, fans laid blame firmly elsewhere.
7:32 pm
you have to start to question the players eventually. back the manager, all day long. the players need to have a look at themself. would this be ten hag's last stand? the owners were watching with interest. but they got a first half to savour. when gvardiol*s clearance evaded back—up keeper ortega, garnacho seized his chance. commentator: and it's a gift of a goal! - the pressure was beginning to release. city were the heavy favourites, but it was united who were driving through the gears. their second was a true team effort. and mainoo scores! yet another academy star, kobbie mainoo, sending united into raptures and prompting stunned anger from the city bench. time to ring the changes, and with doku on for the second half, this was more like it. onana had to be alert to the danger posed by the wounded champions. but late in the game, he wasn't quite so composed — nervy times for fans well—versed in seeing their side throw away leads.
7:33 pm
manchester united are the fa cup winners! but the burst of emotion on the final whistle said it all. well, even the most optimistic red could not have predicted this result. that victory means united will have european football, and a season which was in ruins now has something to show for it. ten hag could still be going, but he's doing it in a blaze of glory. natalie pirks, bbc news, wembley. as natalie said, reports before the game suggested it could be erik ten hag's final game in charge, but could this result now save his job? let's hearfrom the united boss after he and his side lifted the famous trophy. all the compliments to the team. they played very good, to our identity, very strong. you have seen, if we have the players on board, how we can play, and in our philosophy.
7:34 pm
they are not even fit, some are not even match—fit, but i think the performance was really good. the only thing i'm doing is preparing my team, develop my team, progress my team and individual players, because this is, for me, a project. when i came in, i can say it was a mess, and we are now better. underneath, i always said, we are better, but we are by far not where we want to be. so defeat for manchester city, then, as pep guardiola's side finish the campaign as premier league champions — not quite the treble they won last season. and the city manager wasn't really in the talkative mood post—match. many things happen in the final today, many decisions. so, many things happen, and at the end, they scored two goals and we could not score more. you said in the week that if you lost the final, you wanted it to be because the other team were better, not because you weren't yourselves. do you feel that was the case today? you don't feel united were better?
7:35 pm
no. kelly somers with the questions there. well, it wasn'tjust at wembley where there was a derby on cup final day. in scotland, celtic beat rangers by 1—0 in the first old firm scottish cup final since 2002. jane dougall reports from hampden park. there's been so much anticipation in the build up to this old firm scottish cup final. it's been 22 years since both sides faced each other here at hampden park in the scottish cup final. and it was a cagey affair to begin with. in the first half, there was a shout for a penalty for celtic. that was waved away. and then there was a disallowed goal for rangers early on in the second half. and it wasn't until the 89th minute that the deadlock was broken by adam idah for celtic, and of course that has won them the cup. the players have had a long season. their fans have had to endure a long season too. they did take the league title,
7:36 pm
but of course rangers, their bitter rivals, pushed them all the way for that. rangers did win the league cup, and they had been hoping for the double if they were to win the scottish cup here at hampden, but it wasn't to be. it was celtic taking it in the very last minutes. this is brendan rodgers' second piece of silverware in his returning season for the club. there was a little bit of trepidation when he was offered thejob initially, but now the celtic fans have certainly made it clear that they have welcomed him back with open arms. they have won the double this season in his first season back with the club, and the players have not stopped celebrating since. so it's the league and cup double for celtic this season. here's their boss brendan rodgers. ithink...
7:37 pm
—— i think the problem can be that when you win trophies, it becomes an expectation. but you see today, you never get tired of it. to win a double, i think over the course of many years, the league and the scottish cup were very much close together, but of course the finances now and the resources of champions league means that the title becomes even more important, but you can't take away what the scottish cup means for this club and for the supporters. well, it's a day of finals, with barcelona taking the spoils in the uefa women's champions league final. the defending champions, who saw off chelsea in the semi—finals, beat eight—time winners lyon 2—0 in bilbao. aitana bonmati opened the scoring before alexia putellas added a second in injury time. it's barca's third champions league title. well, whatever happens with erik ten hag's future at manchester united, it's sure to be a summer

of managerial change. bbc sport understands that burnley boss vincent kompany has agreed a deal to take over at german side bayern munich. burnley were recently relegated from the premier league, and now their manager is departing along with two members of his backroom staff. but assistant manager craig bellamy is not heading to the bundesliga. bayern have been searching for a boss to replace thomas tuchel, who announced he would step down at the end of the season. in another managerial appointment, wayne rooney has been confirmed as the new boss of championship side plymouth argyle. rooney's previous job as manager was short—lived, as he lost nine of his 15 games in charge of birmingham city before being dismissed. it's his fourth job as a manager, having also previously been in charge at derby county and american side dc united. rooney is part of the bbc*s fa cup final coverage and says this about his new role. i didn't expect my first question to be about plymouth argyle, for this fa cup final... laughter ..but, wayne, it'sjust been announced that you're the manager of plymouth, breaking news, and you're right beside us now. excited about the challenge?
7:39 pm
yeah, really excited to go in as argyle's new head coach. it was a fuller process. we had a lot of managers who interviewed for the job, and thankfully the club found i was the best person for the job and...excited to get started and meet the players, meet the staff and hopefully... you could possibly sign a footballer, which you've never done yet. laughter no, obviously a lot of work next month before we start preseason training. any roles for me? cheerleader! i'll take that! laughter. from an arrival in the championship to a departure — one of leeds united or southampton will secure promotion to the premier league tomorrow. the winners of the play—off final at wembley will return to the top flight at the first time of asking, having both been relegated last year. southampton boss russell martin
7:40 pm
is keen to enjoy the occasion. it's such a privilege to play in a game of this magnitude. you can go your whole career as a player not playing in a game like this, as a manager, so i feel really grateful, again, to be in this position at 38 years old, at a club like this, to be leading a team out at wembley. i won the final having not beat the team, losing to the team twice, so it can also motivate the opposition for sure. so we have to make sure we use that as an advantage and we actually make sure it is something it is a positive for us and it is something that we can use in our favour. they have many, many experienced players. they have, meanwhile, also an experienced and really classy coach. also, the club, yeah, it's not nervous. i have to be honest — in the last two decades, they've spent more time in the premier league than we were allowed to spend there. so it's also an experienced club, and for that, we have to be at our best in order to give ourselves a chance. but we are also strong and we know that we also
7:41 pm
have a really good side. now, away from football... jofra archer starred for england as they beat pakistan by 23 runs in the second t20 at egbaston. captainjos buttler top—scored with 84 from 51 balls to help england to a total of 183 from their 20 overs. in reply, pakistan struggled for momentum, and on his return to england action after injury, archer took two wickets as they bowled the tourists out for 160. archer's performance will give england a big boost ahead of the defence of their t20 world cup title next month. toulouse have won rugby union's champions cup after beating leinster, but they needed extra time to do so. with the score 15—15 at full—time, it took almost another a0 minutes for toulouse to get over the line, this try from matthis lebel helping them gain an early advantage. leinster did make somewhat of a comeback, but this thomas ramos penalty early in the second half of extra time helped
7:42 pm
calm toulouse nerves. the french side ultimately winning 31—22 to pick up the trophy once again, sparking jubilant celebrations. in the women's premiership, saracens secured second place and a home semifinal in the play—offs with a narrow 33—31win over leaders gloucester—hartpury. may campbell's second try of the day ending gloucester*s hopes of finishing the season unbeaten. in the super league, warrington wolves beat the catalan dragons in peripignan in france, winning 16—8 to go second in the table, level on points with st helen's. it was a rather cagey first half in the south of france, ending 2—2 after two sin bins, one for each side. in the second half, though, warrington accelerated into the lead, up 14—2 at one point. wigan warriors could join warrington wolves and at the top of the table when they play salford red devils tomorrow.
7:43 pm
now, is red bull's period of domination in formula one coming to an end? max verstappen was expected to retain his world title with ease this year. he's already failed to win two races, and today in monaco, he failed to claim pole for the first time this season. starting from the front where it matters most will be charles leclerc. nick parrott reports. the most glamourous date on the formula i calendar is one of the toughest. monaco's narrow, twisty streets are the last place you want to get caught in traffic. that's what's happened to former winners aston martin's fernando alonso and red bull's sergio perez in the first session of qualifying. they'll start from 16th and 18th. in practice, max verstappen had complained his red bull was bouncing like a kangaroo. the world champion equalled ayrton senna's record of eight consecutive poles last time out at imola, but his hopes of bettering it ended at the first corner of his final run, leaving him sixth. this car is slippery!
7:44 pm
there was no catching charles leclerc, but then he was born in monaco and knows the place like the back of his hand. he took the top spot on the grid, more than a tenth of a second ahead of mclaren's oscar piastri. it feels really good. however, now i know more often than not in the past that qualifying is not everything up. as much as it helps a lot for sunday's race, we need to put everything together coming into sunday. and in the past years, we didn't manage to do so, but we are a stronger team, we are in a stronger position, and i'm sure we can achieve great things tomorrow, and obviously the win is the target. leclerc will be hoping his third pole in monaco is lucky, as he's yet to win his home race. nick parrott, bbc news. here is that grid for tomorrow's grand prix, then. lando norris is the highest—placed british driver in fourth, just ahead of george russell in fifth. his mercedes team—mate lewis hamilton will start seventh. you'll be able to listen to that
7:45 pm
race from 2pm tomorrow afternoon on bbc radio 5 live and bbc sounds. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today. six—time champion marc marquez produced a stunning performance to comeback from 14th on the grid to finish second in the sprint race for moto gp*s catalan grand prix. world champion francesco bagnaia's crash on the final lap handed victory to spain's aleix espargaro. tadej pogacar claimed his sixth win at the giro d'italia to extend his overall lead to almost ten minutes, withjust sunday's processional run to rome to go. he finished more than two minutes ahead of his rivals. britain's geraint thomas was seventh on his 38th birthday and will claim third overall behind dani martinez. lorena viebers came out on top for the second day running at the ridelondon classique in essex. the dutch rider now has a 20—second lead over belgium's lotte kopecky going into tomorrow's final stage in london.
7:46 pm
lizzie deignan is the highest—placed briton in eighteenth overall, half a minute off the lead. and a day after winning the women's ten metre platform event at the british diving championships, andrea spendolini—sirieix has claimed another gold medal. victory alongside lois toulson in the ten metro synchro menas they've qualified for the paris olympics in that event. rafael nadal says he now can't be certain that this year's french open will be his last. he's been drawn against one of the favourites, alexander zverev, in the first round. it was widely expected that this year would be his last on tour, but he now says this appearance at roland garros is "probably" his last. it's a big, big chance that it's going to be my last roland garros, but if i have to tell you it's100% my last roland garros, sorry, but i will not,
7:47 pm
because i cannot predict what's going on. my personal feelings are better now than one month and a half ago, without a doubt, so in some way, i don't want to close 100% the door. earlier, i caught up with the bbc*s tennis correspondent russell fuller, who says nadal is feeling confident heading in to his 19th french open. the draw against alex zverev, as nadal said in his understated way, on paper is not the easiest, but i think the way that nadal was talking will give his fans a lot of confidence, because here's a man who in his last competitive match was thrashed in rome. that was only around about ten days ago. he said he was a disaster. he said he'd been practising well in rome, but he feels he has made progress since then, he's moving a lot better, he's running freely along the baseline, he's playing better. and this is roland garros, where he's a iii—time champion.
7:48 pm
it's a horrible, horrible start for him, but of course because nadal is such a great champion at roland garros, that does cause some issues for alex zverev, because he's expected to win if you look at the seedings, but it's not easy to beat a man with such an aura in these hallowed surroundings. the order of play is for sunday and the night session sees andy murray take on stan wawrinka. both of those now, unfortunately, past their prime, but that is another blockbuster tie in the opening round? yeah, those creaking old bones may not enjoy the temperatures if it goes past midnight! the weather is fairly typical for paris in late may. the evenings are not particularly warm, and they have a combined age of 76, but what a first round draw. a lot of history at roland garros, in fact. wawrinka against murray will be the third match in a row from murray's perspective at roland garros. he has played him in two previous meetings here.
7:49 pm
he will remember the 2017 meeting with very, very mixed feelings, because it was a semifinal, he nearly made the final a second year in a row, having beaten wawrinka 12 months earlier, but having had problems with his hip earlier in that week, in that fifth set of the semifinal, the hip pretty much seized up. he was not able to sleep that night. he was barely able to move in that fifth set and he was never the same again. here he is, seven years later, yes, probably in his final summer, but still out there and so trying to beat

i thinkjust having the time, regardless of what the jury looks like between now. what results are. tech should be selected to is huge. not for me. i'm quite happy to be set on the sidelines. i like to go and watch her. it also just try and support her how great she is.

now many of you may have spent the day on the sofa, enjoying a busy sporting saturday, maybe with a few snacks. at this baseball game in america between the milwaukee brewers and boston red sox, william contreras hit this home run that knocked over a fan's tub of popcorn! to be fair, they were both trying to catch the home run ball. probably cost a fair few quid, that tub, as well! a reminder of our top stories on sportsday. firstly, manchester united have beaten rivals manchester city 2—1 to win the fa cup at wembley stadium. the win means united will play in the europa league next season, with chelsea dropping into the conference league and newcastle united now out of europe altogether. could this extend erik ten hag's time as manager at old trafford? we will wait and see. but the manager was defiant after the match about his credentials. the team is progressing and we are waiting _ the team is progressing and we are
7:55 pm
waiting trophies. finals is not bad, but we _ waiting trophies. finals is not bad, but we have — waiting trophies. finals is not bad, but we have to keep going. i'm not satisfied _ but we have to keep going. i'm not satisfied with it. we have to do better~ — satisfied with it. we have to do better~ if— satisfied with it. we have to do better. if you don't want me any more, _ better. if you don't want me any more. i— better. if you don't want me any more, i have to go somewhere else to win trophies — meanwhile, it was celtic who came out on top in the old firm scottish cup final, beating rangers 1—0 at hampden park to seal a league and cup double. norwich city loanee adam idah with the winner in the final minute of regular time. we'll leave you with these pictures of celebration. from myself and the whole team, thank you very much for watching. hello there. the weather has been a bit warmer for many of us today, with more sunshine around as well. but things are going to change as it gets wetter overnight,
7:56 pm
leading into a mixture for sunday and bank holiday monday of some sunshine, but also some heavy and thundery showers. it's warm today, though, across the north—west of england, where we had the sunshine. very different picture, though, earlier on in norfolk and here in suffolk with cloud and some rain. and that cloud has been coming in from off the north sea, dampening things down somewhat. we've also got this cloud that's pushing in from the south—west, and this is where we're seeing some rain arriving as well. and that cloud of rain that we've got across south—western areas will continue to work its way northwards and eastwards into more of england and wales overnight. some heavier rain develops in northern england, pushes into southern scotland, too. so, with a lot of cloud overnight and it getting wetter as well, temperatures should be typically ten or 11 degrees by the morning. and quite a wet start for some of us early on sunday morning — these two areas of rain are pushing their way northwards. and following on from that, we'll get some sunshine, but we'll see those showers developing as well, and those showers could be heavy and thundery. the greatest risk of some slow—moving, thundery downpours will be across northern england,

into the midlands, across to east anglia — risk of some local flooding as well. but with more showers around on sunday, temperatures are going to be lower than today. still could make 19 degrees, perhaps, in south—eastern parts of england. those showers are still around into the evening and they will tend to fade away from england and wales, but we'll keep some wetter weather for longer further north. and here, we've got this area of low pressure that will still be sitting close by into bank holiday monday, and again, we've got a mixture of sunshine and some showers. now, many places may start dry across england and wales and northern ireland, but the cloud will bubble up, there will be a scattering of showers developing. perhaps the heavier ones are going to be across central and northern parts of scotland with some thunder. again, in the sunshine and in the light winds, it will feel pleasant enough. those temperatures are typically going to be 16 or 17 degrees, and those numbers are not really going to change much over the week ahead. we'll keep a south—westerly wind going into the early parts of next

week, eventually turning to more of a north—westerly and cooling things down a bit in the far north—west. but otherwise, it's still going to be very unsettled — more areas of low pressure coming in, bringing showers or longer spells of rain and some sunshine in between.

live from london, this is bbc news. ukraine says russia bombed a superstore in kharkiv, where 200 people are thought to have been shopping, killing at least two people and injuring others. this, quite frankly, at the moment, is for the ukrainians, one of the most anxious periods since those first months after the full—scale invasion more than two years ago. the amount of people who've given me an umbrella over the last couple of days... here in the uk, party leaders hit the campaign trail in the uk's general election, amidst a growing exodus of conservative mps. campaigning out in west midlands, sir keir starmer says labour will lower the voting age to 16 if he wins. as south africa's political parties hold final rallies ahead

of wednesday's general election, will nelson mandela's legacy be enough to secure another anc win? music plays. with radio 1's big weekend under way, headline act and brit award winner raye talks to the bbc. i'm excited, i'm nervous, lam. there's a lot of people here, you know. - 35,000, to be precise. bloody... wow! hello, i'm lauren taylor. we start in ukraine — president zelensky has denounced a deadly air strike on a crowded superstore in the country's second largest city, kharkiv, as an act of *russian madness'. officials said at least two people were killed and more than 30 others injured, when two glide bombs struck the diy store on saturday afternoon. the shop is in a residential area, and ukrainian officials reported
