hello. welcome to sports day with me, hugh ferris. our top stories — southampton go marching up to the premier league. they win this so—called richest game in football and promotion from the championship. prince charles of monaco leclerc wins his home grand prix. he hasn't done that before. and the kolkata knight riders win the ipl title for a third time, leaving their opponents firmly in the rear—view mirror.
12:46 am
hello there. welcome along to sports day. southampton have been promoted to the english premier league after winning the championship play off final at wembley. they beat leeds 1—0 in a match between two teams, hoping to return to the top flight at the first attempt and in what's called the richest game of football. joe lenski was there. such a painful match to lose, isn't it? the championship playoff final where 90 minutes can really shape a club's future. it is southampton going back up to the premier league and leeds united staying for at least one more season in the championship. and it was typically for this occasion tense and settled by a single moment. adam armstrong in the first half, given so much space in the leeds penalty area, southampton*s top scorer scoring the goal that in the end sealed his team promotion. now leeds came here with so much expectation, they won 90
12:47 am
points in the regular season, which in most campaigns would have been enough to seal automatic promotion. they had very few chances, and this was a day where they really failed to show up, really down. they really failed to show up, really. james hitting the crossbar with a long range effort — about the best it got for them. and so there will be questions, therefore for leeds united's manager daniel farke, who came in last summer when the team had just been relegated from the top flight, his one task was to get them back up. many leeds fans leaving the stadium just behind us, desperately disappointed with what they've seen from their team today. it is, though, southampton heading back up at the first attempt to win and promotion that earns this club at least £140 million in revenue, significantly more if they manage to stay in the premier league next season. all thanks to the adam armstrong, winner and those are the fine margins that make the playoff so enthralling. i knew we were going to win. i had the feeling, but it was tense at the end because the ten minutes added time and obviously the 2 minutes after was just scary. but we won eventually, so it was good. first time i saw them, it was 1971 at the dell
12:48 am
and this is one of the top days in our history, magic day. and on days like this really- comes out when you really see actually how well supported the club is as a city and it. just means everything to finally be back - where we belong. well, southampton*s promotion means that all three play off finals in the english football league this year were won by the team who had finished lower in the regular season table with a higher placed side failing to score in any of those three matches at wembley. while sunday's win gives the southampton manager russell martin, who had been discarded by leeds boss daniel farke when the two were at norwich together his first promotion as a manager. it wasn't a sexy appointment for southampton football club, me coming in, and they were brave enough to give me the opportunity and hopefully we have repaid them with a day that they will remember forever. and it's given me one of the best days of my careerfor sure. so yeah, ijust feel nothing but gratitude and, yeah, i have a lot of love
12:49 am
for the people i've worked with all year. and you have to say so, first, they defended really well and they were a bit more clinical than than we were, but more effective. and that was the reason we lost the game. again, correlations to them were the best in the premier league, but as you can imagine, it hurts a lot if you're just one step away from from being allowed to celebrate and then you have to travel. so disappointed back, yes, it hurts at the moment. now, while a southampton victory parade would be something of a rarity, it's becoming pretty run of the mill for manchester city, despite losing the fa cup final on saturday. the plans for one in the city remained in place. olly foster was among the thousands of fans celebrating their team's historic fourth straight premier league title. that's what pep guardiola wanted. he said, look, come out in your thousands because this season is still worth celebrating, despite that defeat to manchester united at wembley. we've had a lot of blue smoke. we've had tens of thousands
12:50 am
in the streets of manchester. we had fireworks lighting up the rather gloomy manchester sky. some of the players on their open top bus interacting with a fair few thousand fans at the bottom of deansgate, the main thoroughfare that goes north to south that they paraded down. it's been quite a spectacle here. it has been an incredible season. it fell flat at wembley, didn't it? we didn't see that defeat coming, their first domestic defeat since before christmas. but what we have seen this season is the way that manchester city in the league just get that momentum around march, april and may. and they held off a very, very good improving arsenal side who will surely come again. five points was the difference over the gunners last season. two points this season. it's been an enthralling premier league season, but it is that unprecedented four in a row that manchester city have been celebrating here. well, something similar in germany where bayer leverkusen have been celebrating their historic
12:51 am
double of bundesliga and german cup with their fans at the bayarena stadium. just a warning that these pictures contain flashing lights. after securing the be—pokal yesterday with a one nil win against second division side, kaiserslautern xabi alonso's team give it a hero's welcome at their home ground as they paraded both trophies that they won in a historic season that saw them go a record 51 games unbeaten and in which they only lost once in the europa league final. charles lecrer led from start to finish to win the monaco grand prix. the ferrari driver is from the principality and claimed victory in his home race for the very first time. leclerc led all the way through oscar piastri was in the mclaren behind him and second leclerc*s ferrari team—mate carlos sainz rounded off the podium. the championship leader, max verstappen finished just six. in fact, the top ten in qualifying finished the race in exactly the same positions. that was despite an opening lap crash. that meant the race had to be restarted.
12:52 am
a lengthy delay following the collision between the red bull of sergio perez and the haas of kevin magnussen, which resulted in a red flag. it brought an end to both drivers races. magnussen*s team—mate nico hulkenberg also saw his race ended by the incident. while champion francesco bagnaia claimed victory in moto gp*s catalunya grand prix to close in on championship leaderjorge martin after crashing out of yesterday's sprint race by bounced back to snatch victory in the main event the italian passing martin with five laps to go. it's his third victory of the season. it cuts the gap to the spaniard to 39 points. third seed carlos alcaraz was one of the first to play on day one of the french open at roland garros. and among the quickest to make round two as well. the spaniard on the hunt for a first title there. wants to improve as well on his run to the semis. last year he won his opening round match against qualified jay—jay wolff of the us, dropping just four games

on the way to victory. honestly, i'm with lower expectations into coming into this tournament, but after the practice week after this first round, well, the confidence is higher. my expectation probably got higher after the after today's match. but let's see. andy murray has been knocked out of what is very likely to be his final french open. in just the first round, he was beaten in straight sets by another former grand slam champion, stan wawrinka. at roland garros, murray has said that he doesn't expect to carry on playing much beyond this summer. four time grand slam winner naomi osaka is through to the second round after beating lucia rossetti in three sets. she's never been past the third round at roland garros. elsewhere, the 2017 winner, jelena ostapenko, is through. she beat jacqueline christian. kolkata knight riders have won the indian premier league for a third time, beating sunrisers hyderabad in a one sided final in chennai.
12:54 am
mitchell starc proved why he'd become the most expensive player in ipl history atjust under $3 million. the australian fast bowler providing an opening spell that helped the knight riders, bowled their opponents out for just 113. that is the lowest total in the history of the competition's previous finals. the kolkata batters then rattled off their target in just over ten overs to win by eight wickets. it's been a a very enjoyable nine weeks at the kkr family. i'd love to be back if they want me back, but i'm just grateful for the opportunity. been great to see the success of the club and certainly the success of a lot of the players. it's been a very consistent team. i think everyone*s contributed throughout the season. players and staff and everyone around the group's. meanwhile, england women's second one day international against pakistan was abandoned after heavy rain fell at taunton in somerset. pakistan won the toss. they chose to bat first, but they only managed six overs
12:55 am
before the weather turned and how. england won the first match of the series. the two teams now head to chelmsford for the third and final match on wednesday. tadej pogacar has been crowned champion of cycling's first grand tour of the year this year d'italia. this giro d'italia. the slovenian rode into rome unopposed with his team—mates. it was at the front of the field as they built up to a sprint finish on that final stage. belgium's tim murphy beatjonathan milan to the stage victory. colombia's danny martinez was second overall. britain's geraint thomas completed the podium in third. just enough time then to tell you about our top story. and it is called the most expensive, richest, most lucrative game in football. it can stand to win you at least £140 million. that is heading towards southampton. they beat leeds 1—0 at wembley in the championship play off final. it's been a long season, 46 regular season games,
12:56 am
a third playoff game that they met at wembley. but it is southampton and their captainjack stephens who are heading back to the premier league at the first time of asking. that's it. thanks for watching. sports say bye bye for now. hello. thanks forjoining me. the weather, this bank holiday weekend has been a little hit and miss. this is what we had earlier on during the course of saturday. storms breaking out quite widely across england, parts of wales, some across the irish sea as well, and outbreaks of rain in scotland. now further showers are expected notjust on bank holiday monday, but indeed the rest of the week. temperatures will be near normal, nothing spectacular. but at least by the end of the week, it does look as though these low pressures should finally pull away as we see high pressure building. but the winds will still come in from the north.
12:57 am
so there's certainly no major warm up in the forecast. ok, let's have a look at the forecast then for the short term. so by the end of the night through the morning, we will have had some clearer weather in the south, further north, always more cloud and some showers first thing. and these are the temperatures around seven a:m, typically double figures in most of our major towns and cities. so clouds will be bubbling up through the morning. there'll be plenty of sunshine in most areas right from the word go. but storms will also develop, particularly across northern and eastern parts of scotland. now the showers will be very hit and miss. as far as the temperatures go. as far as the temperatures go, no real change compared to what we've had in the last few days. so typically mid or high teens, a little on the cool side. now, the thunderstorms may continue into monday evening across parts of northern and eastern scotland. elsewhere, the sky should turn clear before the next area of low pressure rolls in first thing on tuesday morning. and you can see outbreaks of rain crossing the country as the weather fronts sweep in.
12:58 am
i think the year's going to be quite close. temperatures on tuesday despite the cloud still getting up to about 18 degrees in some spots. and actually later in the day, we'll probably see sunshine developing or at least a little bit. now, wednesday midweek, we're expecting showers to develop almost anywhere, but more especially across eastern parts of the uk. one or two rumbles of thunder can be expected. i think come the late afternoon the skies should clear out towards the west and it should be a fine, sunny end to the day, for example, in cardiff, plymouth and along the south coast of england. so here's the summary for the week ahead. plenty of shower clouds most days and those temperatures hovering near normal, perhaps a little bit below at times. that's it for me. bye— bye.
