hello and welcome to sportsday. we start in paris, where rafa nadal has been knocked out of the french open in the first round for the first time — but hasn't confirmed that it'll be his last appearance at roland garros. nadal had previously said he expects to retire at the end of the current season, but following his straight sets defeat to alexander zverev, nadal left the door open for a return in the future. he has, of course, won this tournament a record—breaking 1a times, as ben croucher reports. when roland garros*s canvas, one of tennis*s great artists returned for one last hurrah. but a modern nadal dell paints a different picture. the 14—time champion has lost little focus, his finesse or his fire. we even saw the famous ferocious forehand.

bringing tears to his feet and every moment of man magic from the spaniard. the fourth seed has spellbinding response. a final french open, maybe, a sign for sadness, no, not here. may be in two months, i say it's enough. i can't give anything else. that's something that i don't feel yet. i have some goals in front. i hope to be back on this court for the olympics. the feelings that you made me feel here are just unforgettable. thank you very much from the bottom of my heart merci beaucoup. possibly brushed what the finish of the bridge open for the final time. ben croucher, bbc news.

elsewhere at the tournament, british number one cameron norrie has been knocked out in the first round beaten in a five set marathon by world number 56 pavel kotov. the 32nd seed was dominated by his russian opponent in the deciding set taking it 6—2, picking upjust his second victory in a grand slam. it's worth noting that it's the first time norrie has lost in the opening round of a major since the 2022 australian open. for kotov, though, he'll take on 2015 champion stan wawrinka in the next round. world number one and defending champion iga swiatek looked really strong as she eased into round two. swiatek is bidding for a fourth title in five years and she needed little over an hour to beat leolia jeanjean of france, losing just three games on the way. next up for the pole is the four—time grand slam

champion naomi osaka. top seed novak djokovic gets his french open campaign under way on tuesday against frenchman pierre—hugues herbert. incredibly, the 24—time grand slam winner has yet to reach a final in 202a. i almost feel a bit embarrassed to say, with my expectations are, anything but a title for me is not satisfactory. so, it always has been like that. i know for... it might sound arrogant to a lot of people, but i think i have the career that backs it up. and in a way, me playing still at this highest level, one of the major reasons is trying to write more history with the sport and win the biggest titles, that paris is definitely one of them. to football now, it's been a season to remember for aston villa fans after seeing their side book their place at europe's top table following

a 15—year absence. the chief architect of that success, unai emery, has signed a new five—year contract at the club. the spaniard has turned villa around since arriving from villareal in october 2022 with the club sitting 17th in the premier league. he led them to seventh place in his first season in charge and fourth this campaign, qualifying for the champions league for the first time in their history. so, that's unai emery*s future decided, but there are still lots of questions to be answered in the dugout of several other premier league clubs. chelsea appear to be the first to make their move as they close in on leicester's enzo maresca. brighton are looking to replace roberto de zerbi while erik ten hag's future at manchester united still remains unclear. alex fletcher puts the top flight managerial merry—go—round under the microscope. the end of may has signalled time for change in the premier league.

pochettino's departure kick—started movements. the man who could replace him has faced him. after he achieved promotion back to the top flight, the club and talks with the italian, who remains a front runner. leaving behind a legacy on the south coast, roberto de zerbi led brighton to european football for the first time in their history, and following the footsteps of his predecessor, he has been linked to stamford bridge. bbc sport understands him and brentford boss thomas frank are both being monitored. it's notjust of the bridge where things could change. few expected to see red ribbons on the fa cup over the weekend, but erik ten hag got the best of manchester city at wembley. it has raised doubts over his future. united finished eighth the season — their lowest position in premier league history. but despite a review, a message for the manager is one of defiance.

—— the arrival of new ownership has raised doubts. the team is progressing and winning trophies. two trophies in two years is not bad. three finals is not bad. but we have to keep going. i'm not satisfied with it. we have to do better and if you don't want me any more, to win trophies, that is what i did that is what i did my whole career. after achieving success of promotions and secruing top—flight football, kieran mckenna is in talks with ipswich town, even with some movement. he could still be staying put. well, having triumphed in what is often described as "the richest game in football" southampton*s return to the premier league has been celebrated at their home ground. just to warn you, there are some flashing images.
2:52 am
the club held a promotion party at the stadium, head coach russell martin and the team showing off the play—off trophy. fans were treated to live music and appearances from former southampton players — and they clearly enjoyed every minute. the best day of our lives so far. unbelievable from start to finish. we've come in since before children. _ so it'sjust everything for us. unbelievable. never experienced everything like that it would i— probably never will. i be interesting to watch. bring it on, basically. absolutely, bring it on! —— i probably never will. manchester united defender maya le tissier has been called into the england squad for the upcoming european championship qualifiers. she moves up from the standby list to replace nieve charles, who'll remain with chelsea to manage a calf injury. england are preparing for a double—header against france at stjames' park on friday, then in saint etienne the following week. england captain leah williamson has signed a new multiple—year contract with women's super league side arsenal. the defender has spent her entire senior career with the london club, who haven't revealed how
2:53 am
long the deal is for. williamson captained the lionesses to victory at euro 2022 and has also won the wsl and two fa cups with arsenal. to cricket, and england's one—day captainjos buttler will almost certainly miss the third t20 against pakistan having left the squad in cardiff for the birth of his third child. the timing means it's now likely he'll be available for the whole of the t20 world cup in west indies and the usa, which starts on sunday. in buttler*s absence, moeen ali will captain the side with willjacks likely to open the batting. jacks says he can't wait to play a role — both against pakistan and at the world cup. i'm really excited. i've dreamt of this since i was a little boy. i've missed out on the last few, which hurt me a little bit. i really want to be here and i'm really excited for this and hopefully will go our way. we're defending champions of this world cup. we want to do as well as we can, and this is about preparation what will happen.
2:54 am
australia will be one of the favourites to lift the trophy this time around — and they've had some good news, with captain mitch marsh declaring himself fit and ready to go, despite suffering a hamstring injury whilst playing in the indian premier league. australia take on oman in their tournament opener in barbados onjune the 5th. yeah, probably still a little while off. i i'll start bowling hopefully soon, | get through these practice game and ramping up. - that's one of the beauties. we're lucky we have so many options with the ball - and so much talent. all the planning allows me to be really clear on that. i i'll bowl when i need to bowl. sadly, that's all the time we got. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.com/sport. but from me, marc edwards, and the rest of the team here at the bbc sport centre, we'll see you soon. bye— bye.
2:55 am
hello. the weather over the bank holiday weekend was quite changeable for many of us, and more of the same in the days ahead. tuesday for many will be a rather cloudy day, rain at times, a bit of sunshine, i think, later on in the afternoon. now, the weather front that's approaching us is already visible on the satellite picture. it's not particularly big, it's not going to be particularly wet, but i think enough of the low pressure to give us a fairly dreary day, at least for a time. now, through the night, cloud and rain will approach western parts of the uk, but towards the east, it's generally clear. so, from norwich to newcastle and aberdeen, i think here, first thing in the morning, some sunshine and temperatures around 8—9 — a bit milder out towards the west where we've got these atlantic winds. so, here's all of that cloud
2:56 am
and some rain spreading across the country. later in the day, sunshine developing. certainly, i think the afternoon is looking brighter in northern ireland and there'll be sunny spells in wales and the midlands. and in fact, through the course of the evening, i think there'll be some late brightness as well as that weather front slowly drifts into the north sea. so, that's tuesday. the low pressure*s still with us on wednesday. you can see these weather fronts are dragging their heels, and i think on wednesday, it's going to be more of a day of sunny spells and heavy showers. some of the showers will be thundery in parts of scotland and i think along these eastern counties, so the further west you are on wednesday, the drier and sunnier it'll be. in fact, some of these western coasts could end up having a beautiful day — for example, in northern ireland and the welsh coasts. here's thursday — a northerly breeze, so a little on the cool side, and i think showers may become frequent in other areas, so no two days are going to be the same in the week ahead. temperatures 16—18 celsius, so really more of the same, something that we've been used to for days now. that's thursday. now, you might be thinking
2:57 am
about the weekend already — it's not long now. the high pressure is expected to build across the uk and last all through the weekend, so that does promise some settled weather and i think a lot of sunshine on the way as well. in fact, if you look at your apps, they should be already pointing to plenty of sunshine for friday, saturday and sunday, and the temperatures pretty decent as long as we get those sunny spells. that's it from me. bye—bye.
