12:45 am
i'm mark edwards. welcome to sportsday. here's what we've got coming up on the show. djok and roll. the world number one opens his french open title defense with a solid win over home hope pierre—hugues herbert. a date with destiny as dortmund dare to dream ahead of the champions league final, we hear from their manager, edin terzic. time to say goodbye for lexi thompson with multiple lpga tour event wins and a major under her belt. she'll call time on her career at the end of the season. hello and thanks for joining us on sports day.
12:46 am
we start in paris, where novak djokovic has begun his french open title defence with a rather solid straight sets victory over france's pierre becker. having not yet reached a final in 2024, there have been question marks around djokovic*s form, but he did what he does best on the clay courts of the french capital, powering to a 6—4, 7—6, 6—4 win over his wild card opponents. the 24—time grand slam champion will take sole ownership of the record of most major titles with a fourth victory in paris. next up for him, spain's world number 63, roberto carbis. a two time french open finalist, kasper, who moved into the second round with a routine 636463 win over brazil's philippe amelie.
12:47 am
jenni alves the norwegian is a two time beaten finalist in paris, so we'll be looking to make that final step. arena. sabalenka, meanwhile, dropped just three games against teenager erika andreeva to start her french open campaign in emphatic style. the second seed never truly troubled in a 61—62 win over her 19 year old opponent, who is ranked 98 places below her. she will face japan's moe yuka yuichi in round two. fourth seed, elena rybakina started sluggishly, though, against belgium's grit, meaning she was broken to love in her opening service game and then went to lockdown before rallying to win ten consecutive games on her way to a 62—63 victory. now london's wembley stadium will deploy a record number of stewards for saturday's champions league final between borussia dortmund and real madrid. football association is investing more than £5 million towards improving safety and infrastructure in a bid to avoid a repeat of the chaos which marred england's euro 2020 final against italy three years ago.
12:48 am
some two and a half thousand stewards will be on duty at wembley. well, borussia dortmund are continuing their preparations for that season defining champions league clash with the 1a time winners real madrid. bundesliga side returning, of course, to the scene of their 2013 champions league final defeat. while jadon sancho heads to the city of his birth before his loan from manchester united comes to an end. dortmund head coach edin terzic said his side will do all they can to send sancho back a champions league winner. we are there and we are facing teams that are built to win the champions league. we are facing teams, they are on a mission to win the champions league. and if you are on a mission, you can complete a mission or you can fail. but we are there to fulfil a dream and this is our target and we're going to fulfil the dream, or are we going to fight for it. that's the difference between a dream and a mission. and this is what i feel
12:49 am
with with jadon. he wants to fulfil his dream to win and lift the champions league trophy, and hopefully we can give him the support to reach that because we know that he's going to try his absolute best on saturday. vincent kompany is closing in on an improbable switch from burnley to bavaria. as a move to bayern munich nears completion, he's set to replace the sacked thomas tuchel. so what's the view from germany? hers*s the football writer and broadcaster constantin? it has no way to really sugar—coat it. kobani is not the first choice, not a second choice, not even probably the fifth or sixth choice, because biden have reached out because byern have reached out and contacted and talked to a number of coaches, including rangnick nagelsmann, the cb, hansi flick and the list goes on and on. so they are almost running out of options, presentable options, and then they turn their heads to a number of premier league coaches and one of them was vincent kompany. of course he's well known in germany because he played for hamburg in the late 2000s and is also well respected.
12:50 am
and of course there is the connection to pep guardiola, the former bayern manager who is still very well respected among bayern higher ups. so that's why the name kompany came up. and max abel, who's now the director of sports basically at bayern, has lobbied for kompany and basically said internally that they should give him a chance. now the premier league season has onlyjust come to an end, but many clubs have already released their ticket prices for next season, with some sets of fans facing huge increases in cost. bbc questioned are more than 1600 fans has found the majority of respondents are set to pay either slightly more or significantly more for their season ticket when the new campaign gets going in august, with many saying the prices are unfair. joe lenski has more. matchday at fulham.
12:51 am
and right now at this club, these are the good times for the third year in a row. they'll be a top flight club next season, but it comes at a cost. tickets here are some of the most expensive in the country. fulham has a localfan base, but the premier league is a global product. ijust know it's an old stadium. yeah, now i'm a lifelong fulham fan. is it's expensive? it was like 100 euros but worth it this holiday. so i don't care. so premier league fans back home, more american football fans, but you know, love the premier league. record demand has pushed up the prices and one season tickets in fulham's new stand on the thames costs £3,000. caught in the swell of those who've watched this club for years. there will be a time when fulham may find themselves back in the championship again. and then where are you going...
12:52 am
where are your support is going to be there. and if you've priced them out, those loyal supporters, they're not going to be coming. some season tickets here are still below £500, but in three stands for next season, the price goes up by 4%. it's not just at this club. it's a trend through the league. rising ticket prices have been met by protest. at liverpool for one match they took the flags down from the kop at spurs for one minute they turned their backs on the game. tottenham's proposals will affect older supporters from the season. after next, they'll phase out senior concessions so fans who turn 66 will still pay full price. for alan, who's 68, his 50% discount will soon be reduced to 25%. it is an atrocious decision aimed at loyalty. it is a message from the club to us as seniors that were not wanted. and it is a message to every single fan about how much they value loyalty. they don't. tottenham say senior concession numbers have gone up four fold since they left
12:53 am
white hart lane, and that limits choice for others. through the league every club is seeking a balance between fans who pay more for a single match day and the fans who'll be there every august through to may. it's golf, for next year. thomson has confirmed she will retire at the end of the 2024 lpga tour season. thomson, who's only 29, is a 15 time winner on tour. she won one major title at the 2014 kraft nabisco championship, now renamed the chevron championship. and back in 2007, aged just 12 thomson became the youngest ever qualifier at the time for the us women's open. reflecting back this being my 18th us women's open at the age of 29. it's it's amazing because this tournament is where my whole career got started. i always say and 2007 i pine needles. when i teed it up, i'm like, that's where i realised that's where i want to play against the best.
12:54 am
and it's been an amazing journey. i've loved every bit of it. so to be able to tee it up in my 18th is unbelievable. i feel like i'm very content with where my life is and where this decision will lead me to. so, yeah, i'mjust looking forward to what life has in store other than golf. well, number one, nelly korda also paid tribute to thompson, praising thejob herfellow american has done to grow women's golf. korda is the player to beat this week at the us open in pennsylvania, having already claimed the year's first major. this golf course is a beast. i mean, it's off the tee, if you don't hit it into the fairways, it sinks down into the rough. and these greens are small and very, very undulated. i didn't get to play in 2015, but it's it's a beast of a golf course. finally world 500 metre champion josh kerr has guaranteed that britain will win a medal in the event at the olympics. the biggest threat to gold is likely to be norway's reigning olympic champion, yakub ingebrigtsen, whom kerr beat at the worlds last year.
12:55 am
it's a rivalry he says is good for the sport. when two guys are going at it, trying to be the best in the world and you have a competition that comes up every four years, it's going to annoy, you're going to know each other a little bit. and, you know, that's that's just the art of running these days is, you know, some people get annoyed if you want to you say you want to go out and win. but it's my personality to tell people what i want to do and then go and try and do it, because i think it brings more value to the fans and to the sport and get more eyeballs on it. so yeah, i've been a little bit more vocal recently and that's been annoying some people, i would say. and so that was all the time we've got left. you can, of course, get all the latest sports news on our website at bbc.com/sport. but for me, mark edwards and the rest of the team here. we'll see you soon. bye bye.
12:56 am
hello there. we've seen a lot of wet weather around lately. the ground is already pretty saturated in many spots, but on tuesday, there were some sunny spells around, and of course, in the best of the sunshine at this time of year, it always feels pleasantly warm. but the general theme doesn't change over the next couple of days — more heavy thundery downpours in the forecast, some brighter spells in between. it won't be raining all the time, but it has been very wet over the last 2a hours or so with this band of rain pushing eastwards, clearing away into the north sea. some showers still behind it as we head into wednesday morning, but it is a mild start to the day. and then on wednesday, it's another day of scattered heavy downpours, also some brighter spells, of course. this time the focus for the thundery showers will tend to be across central and eastern areas of scotland. now, some of these showers could be particularly slow—moving with light winds, so they could last for some time and lead to some very high rainfall totals, maybe even some flash flooding, so do take care within this area. also, some thunderstorms breaking out across northeast england, down through lincolnshire, parts of east anglia, too. a good scattering of showers elsewhere, possibly drier out towards the south and west by the end of the day. and it will feel a bit warmer
12:57 am
highs of 19, maybe 20 degrees in the south east of england, perhaps a few changes as we go into thursday. the low is now pulled away in. high pressure starts to build in from the west. that spells better news in time for the weekend. but still another day of showers on thursday. this time, the heaviest, most thundery of the showers will tend to be across the south of england and south wales. a good scattering of more isolated showers, though, still further north. and it will be feeling a bit cooler, too, on thursday with more of a northerly wind blowing, so a slight drop in temperature for many of us as we go into friday. the high pressure has been building in, remember? so lots of dry weather with some sunshine developing, but windy and really quite cloudy for many eastern coastal areas, particularly for east anglia down through parts of kent as we head through friday. so there will be some cloud around and it won't be feeling particularly warm, but temperatures could build a little further through the weekend, particularly out towards the north and the west as that high pressure starts to edge in. so lots of dry weather, but just a brisk wind for those north sea facing coasts and also more in the way of cloud here. but we could get to 21—22 celsius in parts of the north and the west, maybe. bye— bye.
12:58 am
hello. this long—range forecast takes us into the start ofjune and there is some dry weather on the way, but notjust yet. the final few days of may will bring further heavy thundery downpours, albeit with some spells of sunshine in between. so it's not going to be a complete wash—out, just a rather mixed weather story underneath this area of low pressure. that low certainly with us throughout wednesday, driving some pretty hefty showers. so most places getting off to a mainly dry start. but those showers developing as the day wears on. and as we get into the afternoon, we will see some heavy thundery ones, particularly across some northern, eastern and central parts of scotland and perhaps down into northeast england as well. the sort of showers that could deliver a lot of rain in a short space of time with thunder and lightning, maybe some hail thrown in for good measure. not as many showers further south and actually in the rest of the sunshine, feeling relatively warm at 20 or possibly 21 degrees. now, this area of low pressure still fairly close by as we head on into thursday. but i think the focus for the heaviest showers will shift a little bit further southward. so as we get into thursday afternoon, the greatest chance of showers and thunderstorms across southern and southeastern parts of england, further north and west, not as many showers, more dry weather, some spells
12:59 am
of sunshine, but quite a brisk north or northwesterly flow. so that will actually keep things feeling relatively cool in some places. now into friday, we will see quite a lot of cloud, i think, spilling across the south and the east of england. still the chance of some showers, also an area of cloud into northern scotland, but in between a fair amount of sunshine and actually more in the way of dry weather overall as we end the week. and that sets us up for the weekend because this area of high pressure is going to start to extend its influence towards our shores. now, there are some big areas of clouds to come around this high. the winds around high pressure flow in this clockwise direction, taking areas of cloud, pushing them across the uk so we could see some fairly cloudy skies down towards the south and the east on saturday, perhaps up towards the northwest of scotland as well. but in between where we get some sunshine, temperatures are likely to get into the high teens or low 20 celsius. and our area of high pressure will still be with us as we get into sunday, centred to the west of the uk and it looks like around the top of this high we mayjust see this zone of rather warm air working its way and particularly towards northern and northwestern parts of the uk.
