picture mm behind me. thunder picture behind me. thunder clouds brewing across parts of eastern scotland. this is actually five, just a few hours ago. we had a real rush of showers year over the last few hours, some of them heavy and even thundery. i will show you those in just a moment. some of the thunderstorms will continue and they will move their way steadily south and east as we go through the evening and overnight. you can see how widespread they are across parts of aberdeenshire and down into edinburgh, where we have had the thunderstorms. they are drifting south and east as well. so, that frontal system will start to ease away, and then behind it we gradually start to see this area of high pressure building. but it will take its time, but something a little quieter and more promising into the weekend. through the night, we will see some heavier bursts down through northern england and across wales, and they will steadily sink their way south. we could see some torrential thundery downpours, localised flooding is not out of the

question. so, as we go into tomorrow, look at the showers. fewer showers into the north, all drifting their way steadily south due to the direction of the wind. some of the showers across east anglia and south—east england could turn heavy and thundery as we go through the afternoon. somewhat brighter conditions out to the west. a blustery afternoon with a north—westerly wind and top temperatures generally on the brighter moments around 19 degrees, but only 1a or 15 if you are in the cloud and showers. as we head towards the weekend, here is the area of high pressure, finally quieting the weather story down. we will be chasing cloud around at the weekend, but i can promise you something more in the way of dry weather to come, settled, sending in something a little bit warmer. thanks, louise. and that's bbc news at six. hello and welcome to sportsday.

i'm gavin ramjaun. no british players remain in the singles at the french open and carlos alcaraz had to work to avoid following them out. we'll be live to paris shortly for all the latest. bayern munich get their man. vincent kompanyjoins as their new head coach, but where do relegated burnley turn next? and jude doesn't let real madrid down — la liga player of the year, can the england star go on to champions league glory this weekend. hello there and welcome along to the programme. more movement on the football managerial circuit to come, but we start at the french open where british players aren't featuring in the second round at roland garros — having failed to win a singles match in paris for the first time since 2020.

dan evans and katie boulter the last to fall — boulter losing to former world number two paula badosa, having been a setup. it caps a miserable start to the second major of the year, following the exits of andy murray, cam norrie, jack draper and harriet dart. let's get the latest now from the french open, with our tennis correspondent russell fuller. good to see you. let's start with something that evan said after his defeat. it's not actually doom and gloom and their stuff to be positive about given the exits even though everyone is out at the moment. is there some truth to that? you need to look at the _ there some truth to that? you need to look at the rankings _ there some truth to that? you need to look at the rankings for a - there some truth to that? you need to look at the rankings for a better. to look at the rankings for a better idea of where tennis is at any given time. dan evans has struggled recently but he is 3a years of age for them it gets hard to improve your ranking at that age for the camera nori has drawback of a jack draper 35 and katie bolter is a hundred places higher in the rankings then she was 12 months ago. there is definitely theme with early

exits at the french open, on the clay because it's happened three times in the last 11 years of french open where all the birds of lost their matches in the first round of singles for the desert altogether surprising given that we're not a nation that is overflowing with clay courts yes, of course junior players train and play abroad at times but there's a brief window to play on there's a brief window to play on the grass. primarily it's hard courts that people will play on. and i think in terms british players probably prefer to play on other services to pick up ranking points to boost their rankings. if you ask the six british players in the draw, what is your favourite sources, none would answer clay. i think that does explain partly where there's been such a disappointing three days. carlos alcaraz didn't have it is own way did he? he did look a bit out of sorts. the qualifier from way did he? he did look a bit out of sorts. the qualifierfrom novel and doctorjack draper in the first round, that talking to a fourth set.

in the end alcaraz was able to go through. the thing with him, he sounded very confident at the start of the week but he did miss the mass because of her right forearm problem. i think that is still on his mind. it may not have caused him pain but it's affecting how powerfully he hits his forehand. bit rusty having not much time on court as he would expect. he's through, is into the third round for the a lot of players can't say that because there's been virtually no play on there's been virtually no play on the outside courts today because of the outside courts today because of the rain. one of his rivals for the title will hope to go through later in the night session for the big advantage to be a top seed and take advantage to be a top seed and take advantage of the guaranteed match taking place under the roof. ibsen; taking place under the roof. very true. on taking place under the roof. very true- on the _ taking place under the roof. very true. on the women's _ taking place under the roof. very true. on the women's side of the draw, interesting puzzles going on there. onsjabeur got draw, interesting puzzles going on there. ons jabeur got through earlier today. there. ons jabeur got through earlier today.— there. ons jabeur got through earlier today. this is potentially coin: earlier today. this is potentially auoin to earlier today. this is potentially going to be _ earlier today. this is potentially going to be the _ earlier today. this is potentially going to be the story _ earlier today. this is potentially going to be the story of- earlier today. this is potentially going to be the story of the - going to be the story of the tournament. if naomi osaka can continue where she is at the moment against the world number one and

6:37 pm
the american was arrested outside valhalla golf club hours before his second round at the us pga championship on the morning of 17 may after trying to drive into the club in heavy traffic. scheffler had been charged with second—degree assault of a police officer, third—degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. after reviewing the evidence, jefferson county attorney mike o'connell said scheffler*s actions did not "satisfy the elements of any criminal offence". it won't come as much of a surprise, considering he's been linked to the job since the season finished but today bayern munich confirmed vincent kompany willjoin as their new head coach, leaving burnley following their relegation to the championship. kompany had been heavily linked over the last two weeks with the job at one of the world's biggest clubs. our correspondent andy swiss is with me in the studio. not much of a surprise given it's now been confirmed today. what have kompany and bayern munich have to say about this? we kompany and bayern munich have to say about this?—

mckenna. —— for the ease won the race and will soon be invited. tote race and will soon be invited. we wait and see when the news gets confirmed. thank you for that. it's been a remarkable season for england'sjude bellingham, and now he's been named la liga's player of the year in his first season in spain. the real madrid man scored 19 league goals — in his winning season in the spanish top tier, and has the chance for more success in the champions league, when real play borussia dortmund in the final at wembley on saturday. he's also expected to play a key role in england's european championship team in germany next month. he has been a revelation in spain, and some real fans are already comparing him with legendary midfielder zinedine zidane. bellingham is the perfect player for modern football, like a hybrid of sedan, redondo and seedorf. e can be a better player than sedan legend in the making already. way, way, way beyond anything any of us could have imagined. his impact this first season has
6:43 pm
been absolutely incredible. i don't think he even thought he was going to land like he did. unbelievable. and he made an impact from from day one. - people had a lot of concerns about how he'd fit in, how he'd integrate, about the reputation of english and british players in spain not lasting that long. jude bellingham was kind of blown all of that away. the clips of him celebrating against manchester city with the fans shouting in spanish to come in and play with an authority that makes it look like he's just not fazed by this. i look at bellingham a little bit and i think there's a lovely combination of two contradictory ideas in bellingham. there's this idea that says, wow, this is real madrid. i'm at real madrid. this is the biggest thing you could ever imagine in the world. and i'm so, so lucky to be here. and then at the same time, even though it sounds contradictory, you watch him play, you listen to him talk, and it feels like, here's a guy who thinks real madrid. so what? i'm not bothered by this. i'm not going to be overawed by this. frightened by this.
6:44 pm
i'm going to take this. love at first sight that he has established with the crowd from the very beginning, from from the starting point. this is something i have never, never, ever seen. not with ronaldo, no. zinedine zidane. he's become a very popular figure. he's been often seen walking down grand villa, the main shopping street with his mum, which really makes him familiar and easier to relate to. for real madrid fans, one of the things that i think really underlines just how much of an impact he's had is the sense. and i genuinely do mean this the sense of deference towards him from other players, from people around the club, and that's arriving at real madrid. that's not arriving at any old club. it's arriving at the biggest club in history. and you turn up here and there is a sense that even his teammates, really brilliant players, are looking at him and thinking, this guy is special. bellingham is the perfect player for modern football. that was the way that ancelotti put it. technical skills, tactical intelligence, his physical condition. he's got an incredible work rate. he's not afraid to go forward - because he will get back and cover the defensive ground as well. he's like the energiser bunny. he defends, he attacks. he's everywhere.
6:45 pm
he's a heatmap and it's like, how can you still be walking? and the madridistas fan wants that when they see you, give it your all. they will love you forever. he has an incredible ability to break into the box at the right time. frank lampard still moves to get on the end of a chance. as a football player, he is amazing. but the character he shows on the pitch is what makes| him very special. he is a team player and yet he's a football star, which is a very difficult combination to find to be both things at the same time. i think he's really seen as a leader within that squad, despite the fact he's only been around for a year, despite of his age. they consider him an example i for the kids, and they always say that like, you are an ambassador. he doesn't say no to any pictures, to any autograph, always with a smile. one of the things i've really loved about watching bellingham this year and in particular watching the reaction to bellingham this year has been the long, long, long list of players he's been compared to, and it's not a had set of players.
6:46 pm
we compare him with alfredo di stefano. i he reminds me of sudan in many things. cristiano ronaldo, like a hybrid of zidane, redondo and seedorf. he goes to napoli, he scores an amazing goal and people start comparing him to maradona. i mean, this is this tells you something about the impact he's had, because in the way that he's played, there's been little glimpses of all sorts of players. there is a zidane comparison here the long stride, the elegance, the touch of kind of subtlety, despite being a big man, both both good in tight spaces, very good in football iq, the way they understand the game and what happens around them. i've seen videos where they put some of his plays and some of zidane's plays and it's like, okay, i have goose bumps now. you can see that he's learned a lot from from sudan, but in some other ways he's i mean, this sounds like blasphemy, you know, but in some other ways, he's better than zidane. he can score more goals defensively. he's a lot stronger than zidane because physically he's a lot stronger than zidane. i know this sounds very, very strong, but he can be a better player than zidane. he can have a better career than that. you've got these people that
6:47 pm
you can compare him to, but with a modern twist. and in that sense, he's beenjust a phenomenal signing for real madrid. he's really seen as somebody who in ten years and he wants to be here for ten years. he said, we'll be the leader, the captain of this real madrid team. he has everything to become a legend in real madrid. - i think he has the potential to be among the top three players - in the history of the club, - up there with alfredo di stefano and cristiano ronaldo. i know these are big words. i'm not saying he's as good - as cristiano ronaldo or stefano. he'sjust started. he has to prove that. but he has the potential to be as great as those players. - the sky is the limit with him. i know he wants that champions league, so hopefully he'll be lifting it in wembley. huge future ahead. so bellingham looking to win the champions league this weekend, but before that, we've the next of the major european finals — with the culminaton of the europa conference league tonight. olympiakos, who beat aston villa in the semi—finals, take on last year's runners up fiorentina. former bolton wanderers and hull city midfielder stelios giannakopoulos played nearly 200 games for olympiakos, and says winning the conference league would be hugely beneficial for the greek club. this type of wins put you in the
6:48 pm
football map, no doubt about that. so it attracts better players to the greek league, the greek super league. of because olympiacos attracts even bigger stars in order to make a similar run to european competitions next year. it's very, very good in general for greek football. it's a good motivation for the young players who have dreams, to chase their dreams to the end. at the end of the day you see that everything is possible, even in a greek club to go all the way to the final and lift the trophy like this. it's very, very huge in every aspect you analyse it from. let's have a quick look at some of the other football stories doing the rounds today. barcelona have appointed hansi flick as their new head coach. the former bayern munich boss has signed a two—year deal
6:49 pm
to take over from xavi, who don't forget said the next coach will suffer, when it was announced he was leaving. flick has been out of work since leaving the german mens national team in 2023. aaron ramsey won't be a part of wales' squad for the friendlies away to gibraltar and slovakia next month. wayne hennesey also misses out. liverpool teenager lewis koumas, son of former wales internationaljason, is one of five uncapped players selected by manager rob page. next season's efl cup third round will be split across two weeks, and use seedings, in order to avoid clashes with european games due to uefa's expansion of the men's club competitions. the seedings will ensure clubs involved in the europa league do not face clubs in the champions league. and bournemouth have made enes unal a permanent signing, after paying getafe £13 million. unaljoined andoni iraola's side on loan injanuary, scoring twice in 17 total appearances, and has now signed a four year contract to remain with the cherries.

england's women have set pakistan an imposing total of 30a to win, in the final match of the their one—day series. nat sciver—brunt was the star, hitting an unbeaten 121i, as they look to cap off an overall victory in chelmsford. england lead the series 1—0, with the second match rained off earlier this weekend. pakistan 011124—9 in their reply. follow that on the bbc sport website. let's stay with cricket because australian spin bowler nathan lyon says he is happy they won't have to face england's james anderson in the next ashes series. the pair are currently together at lancashire, and lyon says that while he is excited to bowl alongside someone he calls "one of the greatest to have ever played the game", he was shocked at how england ended anderson's international test career.
6:51 pm
i look at james i look atjames and what i look at james and what he's been able to do for england cricket, it's pretty remarkable at his skill set and the level that he sat. this is just my opinion that i still think he would be england's best bowler. i got my australian cap on and good luck tojimmy and i look forward to playing with him. i'm glad he won't be coming after the ashes. i'm glad he won't be coming after the ashes. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today. tyson fury*s rematch with oleksandr usyk will take place on the 21st of december this year — according to the chairman of saudi arabia's general entertainment authority. fury was beaten by the ukrainian just 11 days ago, making usyk the undisputed heavyweight champion. scotland international emma orr will play for bristol bears next season. the 21—year—old centre has won 19 caps for her country, including featuring in this year's women's six nations, where scotland finished 4th.
