hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm marc edwards. here's what's coming up. its' a roland garros classic as iga swiatek —— it's a roland garros classic as iga swiatek fights back in epic clash with naomi 0saka world numberi scottie scheffler has all charges dropped by prosecutors after his arrest outside the pga championship. the more evidence that comes out, the more it shows that scotty was a victim here. the history makers — 0lympiakos become the first greek side to win a european club trophy as they beat fiorentina in the final of the europa conference league. hello and thanks for joining us on sport today.
12:46 am
hello and thanks for joining us on sportsday. we're going to start at the french open in paris, where there was a thrilling and dramatic contest between defending champion and world number i, iga swiatek, and quadruple grand slam winner naomi 0saka. in a tense first set, the in—form swiatek, with four titles to her name already this season, took it on a tie—break. 0saka dominated the second overpowering her opponent to take it 6—1. the third set was an absolute nail—biter. the third set was an absolute nail—biter. swiatek 4—1 down and seemingly out. somehow surviving break points, and even a match point to take the set 7—5. the dream of achieving three—in—a—row at the french open is alive and well. but for 0saka, who only returned to the sport four months ago after having daughter shai a valiant end to her tournament. honestly, it's not the worst. like, ifelt honestly, it's not the worst. like, i felt worse for sure.
12:47 am
i... i cried when i got off the court, but the... you know, for me, i kind of realised i was watching iga win this tournament last year and i was pregnant, and it wasjust my dream to be able to play her. so, when i kind of think of it like that, i think i'm doing pretty well. it's hard to have any logical thoughts because for sure, it was — thoughts because for sure, it was really intense. and i was in huge trouble in the third _ and i was in huge trouble in the third set, but i managed somehow to win this match, which — somehow to win this match, which is _ somehow to win this match, which is kind of extract, but i didn'i— which is kind of extract, but i didn't give _ which is kind of extract, but i didn't give up. over on the men's side — jannik sinner is making steady progress in his bid to win back—to—back grand slams. the australian open champion and number two seed enjoyed a comfortable victory over the 37—year—old frenchman richard gasquet.
12:48 am
sinner winning in straight sets 6—4, 6—2, 6—4. carlos alcaraz had to dig deep to beat inspired qualifierjesper dejong. the spaniard looked subdued at times in a 6—3, 6—4, 2—6, 6—2 victory over a player ranked 173 places below him the two time major winner had to come from a break down he dominated most of. the points in the first set, and i was struggling to get to my good tennis, - or the tennis i was playingl in the first and second set. then in the fourthl set, i had to fight. i had to overcome the problems that i had much of the time - with myself, but really happy that i could get the win- in a good way at the end. earlier, ninth seed stefanos tsitsipas overcame a third—set wobble to beat germany's daniel altmaier 6-3, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.
12:49 am
he also had to recover from a being a break down in the fourth, with altmiar threatening to level the match, but the greek continues his bid for a first grand slam title. to golf, and all charges against world number one scottie scheffler have been dropped, following his arrest at the us pga championship earlier this month. the american was arrested outside valhalla golf club while trying navigate heavy traffic hours before his second round at the tournament. the charges included reckless driving and reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. based upon the totality of the evidence, my office could not move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against mr scheffler. mr scheffler*s characterisation that this was, quote, a big misunderstanding is corroborated by the evidence. scheffler said on social media that he was pleased with the decision as was his

lawyer outside of court. it's obvious he didn't do anything wrong, do anything wrong, and as i've said repeatedly, the more evidence that comes out, the more it shows that scottie was the victim here. and, you know, ithink everybody sees something like this happen and realises they're one wrong turn or running into the wrong person away from going to jail themselves. history made on wednesday as 0lympiakos became the first greek football club to win a european competition. they beat fiorentina 1—0 in the final of the europa conference league in athens. ayoub el kaabi the hero of 0lympiakos' run to the final with ten in the competition before kick—off. five in the semifinals against aston villa. the hero on the day scoring the only goal of the match it came four minutes from the end of extra time. do spare a thought for the italian side, though. it's the second consecutive year fiorentina have lost in the final of this competition.

for 0lympiakos, though, it's greek immortality. it's that time of year — the off—season managerial merry—go—round — this one from burnley to bavaria. vincent kompany has been appointed bayern munich head coach on a three—year deal. the former manchester city captain retired from playing in 2020. he moved from anderlecht to manage burnley in 2022 and guided them to promotion to the premier league last year in his first season in charge. the clarets though suffered relegation from the top flight in may after finishing 19th. barcelona have confirmed hansi flick as their new manager on a two—year deal. it ends months of uncertainty at the club. the 59—year—old former germany manager takes over from xavi, who was sacked last week. england'sjude bellingham has been named la liga's player of the year. the real madrid man in his first season in spain scoring i9 league goals to help real win the spanish title and there's still more

success to be had. the champions league final beckons of final beckons of course when real bellingham is the perfect player for modern football. like a hybrid of zidane, redondo and seedorf. he can be better than a zidane. way, way, way beyond anything any of us could have imagined. his impact this first season has been absolutely incredible. unbelievable. and he made an impact from from day one. people had a lot of concerns about how he'd fit in, how he'd integrate, about the reputation of english and british players in spain not lasting that long. jude bellingham was kind of blown all of that away. the clips of him celebrating against manchester city with the fans shouting in spanish. to come in and play— with an authority that makes it look like he'sjust not fazed by this. - i look at bellingham a little bit and i think there's - a lovely combination of two contradictoryl ideas in bellingham.

12:56 am
hello. there has been no shortage of heavy downpours over the last few days, but i think those heavy showers will become fewer and further between as we head through the next couple of days and towards the weekend and the start ofjune. of course, it is going to turn drier. there will be some warm sunshine, often quite large amounts of cloud, as i'll show you in a moment. and in the short term, this area of low pressure is still fairly close by. so we will see some further heavy showers as we go through the day. on thursday, a band of cloud and some showery rain pushing out of northern england, down into wales, the midlands, east anglia, some hefty showers developing across southern and southeastern parts of england. and another pulse of rain across eastern parts of england. further north and west, sunny spells one or two showers, but with this fairly brisk and fairly cool northwesterly breeze. temperatures are going to struggle a little bit, particularly on some of these eastern coast with a cloud, a bit of rain, 15 degrees, maybe 19 in the brighter spots further west. now, as we head into friday, we will see this area of high pressurejust starting to build its way in from of the west. now, we will see quite a lot of cloud lingering close to this eastern side of england with some outbreaks of rain.
12:57 am
and i think another bank of cloud will start to topple into the north west of scotland in between some spells of sunshine. temperatures at best around 19, possibly 20 degrees in the brightest spots. and then we get into the weekend and this high pressure does begin to dominate the scene. but you can see some big clumps of cloud rotating around the high. that's why it won't be sunny all the time on saturday. i think england and perhaps parts of wales likely to see quite a lot of cloud, maybe the odd shower, also a bit more cloud at times towards the north west of scotland. that will peg temperatures back a little bit. 14 for stornoway and for lerwick, but with some shelter at central and some eastern parts of scotland could get to 20—21 degrees for sunday. still some big areas of cloud, perhaps quite a lot of cloud filtering in across the western side of scotland, northern ireland, northwest england, the odd spot of rain. but in shelter eastern scotland, we could get to 21 or 22 degrees. similar temperatures further south where we get to see some sunshine. now, this area of high pressure remains with us into the start of next week. that high still centred
12:58 am
out to the west of us. the winds around high pressure flow in a clockwise direction. and it looks like the winds for the start of the week will bring this wedge of fairly warm air across the uk and with that quite a lot of cloud. but where we do see that cloud breaking to give some spells of sunshine, i think you really will feel the effects of that. warm air temperatures will climb up to around 22, maybe 23 degrees in sheltered spots with some sunshine. so how long will that dry and relatively warm weather last? well, the jet stream, the starts of the week well to the north and the north east of us, allowing that area of high pressure to be in charge. but that high then starts to retreat. that would allow the jet stream to slip southwards. and there is the increasing chance through next week that we will see some showers starting to return and those showers returning from the north. that means it will not be particularly warm now at this time of year, will be intojune.
12:59 am
by this stage, any sunshine, strong sunshine will lift the temperature, so we could still see values getting into the low 20 celsius. there isjust the increasing chance that we'll see some showers at times, especially across the north of the uk. that's how it's looking. bye for now.
