hello, i'm marc edwards. welcome to sportsday. here's what's coming up. it's a roland garros classic as iga swiatek fights back in epic clash with naomi osaka at the french open. world numberi scottie scheffler has all charges dropped by prosecutors after his arrest outside the pga championship. the more evidence that comes out, the more it shows that scottie was a victim here. the history makers olympiakos become the first greek side to win a european club trophy as they beat fiorentina in the final of the europa conference league. hello and thanks for

joining us on sportsday. we're going to start at the french open in paris, where there was a thrilling and dramatic contest between defending champion and world number one, iga swiatek, and quadruple grand slam winner naomi osaka. in a tense first set, the in—form swiatek, with four titles to her name already this season, taking it on a tie—break. osaka, though, dominating the second, overpowering her opponent to take it 6—1. the third set was an absolute nail—biter. swiatek 4—1 down and seemingly out, somehow surviving break points, and even a match point to take the set 7—5. the dream of achieving three in a row at the french open is alive and well. but for osaka, who only returned to the sport four months ago after having daughter shai, a valiant end to her tournament. honestly, it's not the worst. like, i've felt worse for sure. i... i cried when i got off

the court, but then... you know, for me, i kind of realised i was watching iga win this tournament last year and i was pregnant, and it was just my dream to be able to play her. so, when i kind of think of it like that, i think i'm doing pretty well. it's hard to have any logical thoughts because for sure, it was really intense. and on a really high level. and i was in huge trouble in the third set, but i managed somehow to win this match, which is kind of abstract, but i'm glad i didn't give up. over on the men's side — jannik sinner is making steady progress in his bid to win back—to—back grand slams. the australian open champion and number two seed enjoyed a comfortable victory over the 37—year—old frenchman richard gasquet — sinner winning in straight sets 6—4, 6—2, 6—4.

carlos alcaraz had to dig deep to beat inspired qualifierjesper dejong. the spaniard looked subdued at times in a 6—3, 6—4, 2—6, 6—2 victory over a player ranked 173 places below him the two time major winner had to come from a break down in the fourth set in the end, though, doing what he does best. he dominated most of. the points in the first set, and i was struggling to get to my good tennis, - or the tennis i was playingl in the first and second set. then in the fourthl set, i had to fight. i had to overcome the problems that i had much of the time - with myself, but really happy that i could get the win- in a good way at the end. ninth seed stefanos tsitsipas overcame a third—set wobble to beat

germany's daniel altmaier 6-3, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. he also had to recover from a being a break down in the fourth, with altmiar threatening to level the match, but the greek continues his bid for a first grand slam title. to golf, and all charges against world number one scottie scheffler have been dropped, following his arrest at the us pga championship earlier this month. the american was arrested outside valhalla golf club while trying navigate heavy traffic hours before his second round at the tournament. the charges included reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. based upon the totality of the evidence, my office could not move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against mr scheffler. mr scheffler*s characterisation that this was, quote, "a big misunderstanding", close quote, is corroborated by the evidence. scheffler has said on social media that he was pleased with the decision, as was his

lawyer outside of court. it's obvious he didn't do anything wrong, and as i've said repeatedly, the more evidence that comes out, the more it shows that scottie was the victim here. and, you know, ithink everybody sees something like this happen and realises they're one wrong turn or running into the wrong person away from going to jail themselves. history made on wednesday as olympiakos became the first greek football club to win a european competition. they beat fiorentina 1—0 in the final of the europa conference league in athens. ayoub el kaabi the hero of olympiakos* run to the final with ten in the competition before kick—off, five in the semifinals against aston villa — the hero on the day scoring the only goal of the match. it came four minutes from the end of extra time. do spare a thought for the italian side, though. it's the second consecutive year fiorentina have lost in the final of this competition. for olympiakos, though, it's greek immortality. it's that time of year —

the off—season managerial merry—go—round — this one from burnley to bavaria. vincent kompany has been appointed bayern munich head coach on a three—year deal. the former manchester city captain retired from playing in 2020. he moved from anderlecht to manage burnley in 2022 and guided them to promotion to the premier league last year in his first season in charge. the clarets, though, suffered relegation from the top flight in may after finishing 19th. barcelona have confirmed hansi flick as their new manager on a two—year deal. it ends months of uncertainty at the club. the 59—year—old former germany manager takes over from xavi, who was sacked last week. england'sjude bellingham has been named la liga's player of the year. the real madrid man in his first season in spain scoring i9 league goals to help real win the spanish title — still more success to be had, of course. the champions league final beckons of course when real take on bellingham s former club borussia dortmund at wembley on saturday.

some real fans are already comparing him with legendary midfielder zinedine zidane. bellingham is the perfect player for modern football. like a hybrid of zidane, redondo and seedorf. he can be a betterl player than zidane. legend in the making. way, way, way beyond anything any of us could have imagined. i don't think he would even land how he did. people had a lot of concerns about how he'd fit in, - how he'd integrate, _ about the reputation of english and british players in spain not lasting that long. - jude bellingham was kind of blown all of that away. j the clips of him celebrating against manchester city - with the fans - shouting in spanish. love at first sight that established from the crowd. —— i don't think even he thought _ this is something i have never, ever, ever seen — not with cristiano ronald no, not with zidane. is easy for them to relate to.

you turn up here. there's a sense that even his team if you're looking at - him and thinking, i this guy is special. bellingham is the perfect l player for modern football. *s gotan *s got an incredible work great. he's not afraid to go forward. he's like the energiser bunny. he energise defence, he attacks, and it's like how can you be watching? he's a heatmap and it's like, how can you still be walking? and the madridistas fan wants that when they see you give it your all, they will love you forever. like bellingham. he has an incredible ability to break into| the box at the right time. he's a team player he is a team player and yet he's a football star, which is a very difficult combination to find to be both things at the same time. i think he's really seen as a leader within that squad, despite the fact he's only been

around for a year, despite of his age. one of the things i've really- loved about watching bellingham this year and in particular watching the reaction - one thingl one thing i have loved to bellingham this year has been the long, long, - long list of players he's been compared to, and it's not. a bad set of players. we compare him with alfredo di stefano. he reminds me of zidane in many things. cristiano ronaldo, like a hybrid of zidane, redondo and seedorf. he goes to napoli, . he scores an amazing goal and people start - comparing him to maradona. i mean, this tells you - something about the impact he's had, because in the way that he's played, _ there's been little glimpses of all sorts of players. - there is a zidane comparison here — the long stride, - the elegance, the touch of kind of subtlety, despite being - a big man, both both good in tight spaces,| good in tight spaces. i've seen videos where they put some of his plays and some of zidane's plays and it's like, ok, i have goose bumps now. you can see that he's learned a lot from from sudan, but in some other ways, he's — i mean, this sounds like blasphemy, you know — but in some other ways, he's better than zidane. he can score more goals defensively. he's a lot stronger than zidane because physically he's a lot stronger than zidane. i know this sounds very, very strong, but he can be
2:55 am
he's just started. he has to prove that. but he has the potential to be as great as those players. the sky is the limit with him. i know he wants that champions league, so hopefully he'll be lifting it in wembley. the rematch between the undisputed heavyweight champion oleksander usyk and tyson fury will take place on december the 21st according to officials in saudi arabia. usyk became the first man to beat fury when he won on a split decision just under two weeks ago. but it's unlikely that all four heavyweight belts will be on the line in the rematch with the ibf planning to strip usyk as he will not be facing its mandatory challenger next. that's all your sport for now. from me, marc edwards, and the rest of the team here, we'll see you soon. bye— bye.

high pressurejust starting to build its way in from of the west. now, we will see quite a lot of cloud lingering close to this eastern side of england with some outbreaks of rain. and i think another bank of cloud will start to topple into the north west of scotland in between some spells of sunshine. temperatures at best around 19, possibly 20 degrees in the brightest spots. and then we get into the weekend and this high pressure does begin to dominate the scene. but you can see some big clumps of cloud rotating around the high. that's why it won't be sunny all the time. on saturday, i think england and perhaps parts of wales likely to see quite a lot of cloud, maybe the odd shower, also a bit more cloud at times towards the northwest of scotland. that will peg temperatures back a little bit. 14 for stornoway and for lerwick, but with some shelter at central and some eastern parts of scotland could get to 20—21 degrees for sunday. still some big areas of cloud, perhaps quite a lot of cloud filtering in across the western side of scotland, northern ireland, northwest

england, the odd spot of rain. but in shelter eastern scotland, we could get to 21 or 22 degrees. similar temperatures further south where we get to see some sunshine. now, this area of high pressure remains with us into the start of next week. that high still centred out to the west of us. the winds around high pressure flow in a clockwise direction. and it looks like the winds for the start of the week will bring this wedge of fairly warm air across the uk and with that quite a lot of cloud. but where we do see that cloud breaking to give some spells of sunshine, i think you really will feel the effects of that. warm air temperatures will climb up to around 22, maybe 23 degrees in sheltered spots with some sunshine. so how long will that dry and relatively warm weather last? well, the jet stream, the starts of the week well to the north and the north east of us, allowing that area of high pressure to be in charge. but that high then starts to retreat. that would allow the jet stream to slip southwards. and there is the increasing chance through next week that we will see some showers

starting to return and those showers returning from the north. that means it will not be particularly warm now at this time of year, will be intojune. by this stage, any sunshine, strong sunshine will lift the temperature, so we could still see values getting into the low 20 celsius. there isjust the increasing chance that we'll see some showers at times, especially across the north of the uk. that's how it's looking. bye for now. live from washington, this is bbc news. israeli troops press on with their rafah operation,
