and dramatic contest between defending champion and world number one iga swiatek and quadruple grand slam winner naomi osaka. in a tense first set, the in—form swiatek, with four titles to her name already this season, taking it on a tiebreak. osaka, though, then dominating the second, overpowering her opponent to take it 6—1. the third set, an absolute nail—biter — swiatek 4—1 down, seemingly out, somehow surviving breakpoint and even a match point to take the set 7—5. the dream of achieving three in a row at the french open alive and well. but for osaka — who only returned to the sport four months ago, after having daughter shai — a valiant end to her tournament. honestly, it's not the worst. like, i've felt worse, for sure. i cried when i got

off the court. but then, you know, for me, i kind of realised, like, i was watching iga, like, win this tournament last year and i was pregnant. and it was just my dream to, like, be able to play her. so when i kind of think of it like that, i think i'm doing pretty well. it's hard to have any logical thoughts because, for sure, you know, it was really intense and on a really high level. and i was, you know, in huge trouble in the third set, but i managed somehow to win this match, which is kind of abstract. but i'm glad that i didn't give up. over on the men's side, jannik sinner is making steady progress in his bid to win back—to—back grand slams. the australian open champion and number—two seed enjoying a comfortable victory over the 37—year—old frenchman richard gasquet. sinner winning in straight sets. 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

carlos alcaraz had to dig deep to beat inspired qualifierjesper dejong. the young spaniard looking subdued at times, in a 6—3, 6—4, 2—6, 6—2 victory over a player ranked 173 places below him. the two—time major winner had to come from a break down in the fourth set. in the end, though, doing what he does best. he dominated the most of the points in the third set and it was struggling to get to my good tennis, or the tennis that i was playing in the first and the second set. and then in the fourth set, i had to fight, i had to overcome the problems that i had most of the time with myself. but i'm really happy that i could get the win in a good way at the end. well, ninth seed stefanos tsitsipas overcame a third set wobble to beat germany's daniel altmaier 6—3, 6—2, 6—7, 6—4. he also had to recover

from being a break down in the fourth, with altmaier threatening to level the match. but the greek continues his bid for a first grand slam title. to golf, and all charges against world number one scottie scheffler have been dropped, following his arrest at the us pga championship earlier this month. the american arrested outside valhalla golf club while trying to navigate heavy traffic hours before his second round at the tournament. the charges included reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. based upon the totality of the evidence, my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against mr scheffler. mr scheffler�*s characterisation that this was, quote, "a big misunderstanding", close quote, is corroborated by the evidence. scheffler has said on social media he was pleased with the decision, as was his

lawyer outside of court. it's obvious he didn't do anything wrong. and as i've said repeatedly, the more evidence that comes out, the more it shows that, you know, scottie was a victim here. and i think everybody sees something like this happen and realises they're one wrong turn or running into the wrong person away from going to jail themselves? to football history. on wednesday, olympiakos became the first greek football club to win a european competition. they beat fiorentina i—nil in the final of the europa conference league in athens. ayoob el kaabi, the hero of olympiakos, in the run—up to the final with ten in the competition before kick off. five, of course, in the semifinals against aston villa, while the hero on the day scoring the only goal of the match. it came four minutes from the end of extra time due. spare a thought for the italian

side, though, it's the second consecutive year fiorentina have lost in the final of this competition. for olympiakos, though, it's greek immortality. now it's that time of year, the off—season managerial merry—go—round. this one from burnley to bavaria. vincent kompany has been appointed bayern munich head coach on a three—year deal. former manchester city captain retired from playing in 2020. he moved from anderlecht to manage burnley in 2022 and then guided them to promotion to the premier league last year in his first season in charge. clarets, though, suffered relegation from the top flight in may, afterfinishing 19th. barcelona have confirmed hansi flick as their new manager on a two—year deal— it ends months of uncertainty at the club. the 59—year—old former germany manager takes overfrom xabi, who was sacked last week. england'sjude bellingham has been named la liga's player of the year, the real madrid man in his first season in spain, scoring 19 league goals to help real win the spanish title. still more success to be had, of course. champions league final beckons when real take on bellingham's

former club borussia dortmund at wembley on saturday. some real fans are already comparing him with legendary midfielder zinedine zidane. bellingham is the perfect player for modern football, like a hybrid of zidane, redondo and seedorf. he can be a betterl player than zidane. a legend in the making already. way, way, way beyond anything any of us could have imagined. i don't think he even thought he was going to land like he did. people had a lot of concerns about how he'd fit in, - how he'd integrate, _ about the reputation of english and british players in spain not lasting that long. - jude bellingham has. blown all of that away. the clips of him celebrating against manchester city - with the fans - shouting in spanish. love at first sight that he has established with the crowd from the very beginning, from the starting point. this is something i have never, never, everseen. not with cristiano ronaldo. not with zinedine zidane. he's a very popular figure. he's been often seen walking down grand villa, the main shopping street with his mum, which really

makes him familiar and easy to relate to for real madrid fans. so arriving at the biggest club in history and you turn up - here and there is a sense that even his teammates, - really brilliant players, - are looking at him and thinking this guy is special. bellingham is the perfect l player for modern football. that was the way that ancelotti put it. - he's got an incredible work rate. he's not afraid to go forward because he will get back and cover the defensive ground as well. he's like the energizer bunny. he defends, he attacks. he's everywhere. you see his heatmap and it's like, how can you still be walking? and the madridistas fan wants that — when they see you, give it your all, they will love you forever. like bellingham. he has an incredible ability to break into the box at the right time. frank lampard still moves to get on the end of a chance. he's a team player and yet he's a football star, - which is a very difficult - combination to find to be both things at the same time. one of the things i've really loved about watching bellingham this year and in particular watching the reaction to bellingham this year has been the long, long, long list of major players he's been compared to, and it's not a bad set of players.

we compare him with alfredo di stefano. he reminds me of zidane in many things. cristiano ronaldo is i like a hybrid of zidane, ronaldo and seedorf. he goes to napoli, he scores an amazing goal and people start comparing him to maradona. i mean, this is, this tells you something about the impact he had because in the way that he's played, there's been little glimpses of all sorts of players. there is a zidane comparison here — the long stride, the elegance, the touch of kind of subtlety. despite being a big man. i've seen videos where they put some of his plays and some of zidane's plays and it's like, ok, i have goosebumps. now you can see that he's- learnt a lot from from zidane, but in some other ways he's, i mean, this sounds- like blasphemy, you know, l but in some other ways he's better than zidane. he can score more goals defensively. | he's a lot stronger than zidane because physically he's a lot. stronger than zidane. i know this sounds very, very strong, but he canl

be a better player. zidanen, he can - have a better career. this is really seen as somebody who in ten years and he wants to be here for ten years. he said, we'll be the leader, the captain of this real madrid team. i think he has the potential to be among the top three players in the history of the club up there with alfredo di stefano and cristiano ronaldo. i know these are big words. he's just started. he has to prove that, but he has the potential to be as great as those players. the sky's the limit with him. i know he wants that champions league, so hopefully, he'll be lifting it in wembley. finally to boxing and the rematch between the undisputed heavyweight champion oleksandr usyk and tyson fury will take place on december the 21st, according to officials in saudi arabia, who became the first man to beat fury when he won on a split decision just under two weeks ago. but it's unlikely that all four heavyweight belts will be on the line in the rematch, with the ibf planning to strip usyk, as he will not be facing its mandatory challenger next. and that's all a sport for now from me, mark edwards and the rest of the team here. we'll see you soon. bye— bye. hello there.

today, we've seen a mixture of sunshine and showers, a familiar mix, but fewer showers, and mostly focused on south—eastern parts of england. other eastern areas of england, though, seeing a spell of rain just for a while. that may well tend to move away temporarily. and it is going to be turning drier over the next few days as high pressure noses in from the atlantic. but we've still got that northerly wind overnight. it will bring more cloud to eastern parts of england and we'll see a bit more rain arriving later on in the night as well. further west, though, we're going to have clearer skies and lighter winds, a few short—lived mist and fog patches by the end of the night, and a little bit cooler where we have the clearer skies. temperatures in scotland could be down to six oi’ seven degrees. still some cloud, though, coming in on that northerly breeze for eastern england into the midlands and it may well bring with it some rain or some showers. those becoming confined to the south—east of england in the afternoon. other areas may brighten up a bit. but it's further west and further north that we'll have the best of the sunshine, light winds as well —

a very pleasant day. if anything, it's going to be a bit warmer than today. so we'll see temperatures in the sunshine getting up to 20 or 21 celsius. again, a bit coolerfor some eastern areas of england, perhaps as it will be for saturday. there's our area of high pressure. the winds are falling lighter. even across eastern parts of england. still a northerly breeze, so maybe one or two showers here. not very many. many places will be dry, and again, we've got the sunnier skies closer to the high to the north and west of the uk, and those temperatures again reaching 20 or 21 celsius. a little bit cooler around some eastern parts of england. but temperatures are going to rise here the second half of the weekend — a change of fortunes to come. the high pressure is never quite making it to the uk. it's getting squeezed on sunday, and all this cloud is coming in from the atlantic around the top of the high. that will be working its way into much of scotland, northern ireland. eventually bringing a little rain into the far north—west. but we've still got some sunshine for england and wales and a sunnier day, with lighter winds across east anglia and the south—east, means it's going to be warmer here as well.

temperatures are going to peak at 22 or 23 degrees. still quite warm in the sunshine for eastern scotland, cooler in western scotland, with the cloud. and things are going to change a bit as we head into next week. there's some rain in the forecast mainly for northern areas of the uk. further south, it's looking generally dry still and, if anything, still quite warm as well.
