i'm jane dougall. a day of upsets and the women's quarter finals at the french open as two big names crash out. india ruthlessly dispatched ireland in new york as they begin their t20 world cup with a convincing victory and delight for the dunlop*s, as michael surpasses the record shared with his unclejoey to become the most successful rider in the history of the isle of man. hello and welcome to the programme. well, there were a few shocks at roland garros with two top seeds going out in the women's singles. the 2022 wimbledon champion elena rybakina

lost her quarterfinal against italy's jasmine paolini. it means that 28—year—old paolini makes it through to a grand slam semifinal for the first time in her career. rybakina, who is the fourth seed and who was yet to drop a set in the tournament, had recovered from a set in a break down to take this to a decider. however, 12th seed paolini took the match. 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. this was the perfect day, i think. singles and doubles. and the singles was a really tough match. i'm happy i managed to come back in the third set because, you know, was tough after the second set. but yeah, i'm really happy with my performance and i'm also happy for that. i was just trying to find my game, which was always like i would step back and i was trying to fight through. but in the end, yeah,
12:47 am
as you say, it's not the greatest day in the office. and i was close, but she won. and in the end, i'mjust... yeah, i need to focus now on the grass season. perhaps even more of a shock — second seed aryna sabalenka has gone out to 17 year old russian mira andreeva. the first set went to a tie—break which the experienced belarusian sabalenka eventually took seven six. but then she lost the second and the third set to the teenager who is now through to her first grand slam semifinal. she is the youngest woman to do so since martina hingis at the 1997 us open. i played grachev a few days ago, and i was like, well, if i win the match, i'll be in quarterfinals. but then if i play sabalenka and if i win, i can be in semifinals. wow, that could be a dream. and i'm actually, i will be

playing semifinals tomorrow. and so my thoughts are kind of they are come they kind of came true. in the men's singles alexander zverev is through to the semi—finals of the tournament after beating australian alex de minaur in straight sets. he took the first set six 6—4, but de minaur fought back in the second, taking it to a tie—break. however, the german proved to be just too strong and edged de minaur out. zverev then went on to win the third set, six four to get the third set, 6—4 to get into the semi—finals of the french open for the fourth year in a row. he will now face casper root after the seventh seed got a walkover win because of novak djokovic, a walkover win because of novak djokovic*s knee injury. the three time french open winner alfie hewitt has moved

with chelsea and has had huge success in italy, winning three serie a titles in a row with juventus and was also in charge of inter milan when they became champions in 2021. napoli won the title for the first time in 33 years last season, but finished tenth this year. six time moto gp world champion marc marquez has signed a two year deal to ride for ducati from next year. the 31—year—old will replace italian bastianini and race alongside reigning double world champion francesco bagnaia in the factory team. marquez, who moved to gresini racing in october after 11 years at honda, is third in this year's standings. michael dunlop is now the most successful rider to compete at the isle of man tt. he won the three lap super trans race on wednesday to take his tally of victories to 27. that is one more than the previous record, which was held by his uncle,
12:51 am
the legendaryjoey dunlop, for 2h years. steven watson went to meet him. and now michael dunlop. michael dunlop is he going to make it 2017? michael dunlop showed he meant business. michael dunlop takes the lead to glen helen from the grandstand 3.4. he continued to pull further and further away from the opposition. yeah, the speed difference. that is a big difference. massive. colossal. there was one pit stop and unlike the last race when a helmet issue cost him a victory lap. this time all went smoothly. michael dunlop held his nerve over the final two laps to take an unforgettable win.
12:52 am
that's it. michael dunlop is going to make history. he is the greatest rider of all time. dunlop wins gold medals at the olympics. you know, i mean, this is the highest you want won here. that's what it's all about. and joey's heritage has lived on for years and years upon years. and no matter where you go and in the world of people's always. joey dunlop you know, they don't really know much more about, you know, aboutjoey. and if i get halfway around the world, as he did to to the point that people knew who i was, that's fantastic. and that's what i've always achieved to do the best i could for the actual dunlop team and to be the best i can for the whole family. so a record breaker and a history maker, as michael dunlop adds to the amazing list of motorcycling achievements by the remarkable dunlop dynasty. stephen watson, bbc news on the isle of man. congratulations to michael. now more than 100 players from around the world are currently competing in the world pool championships in saudi arabia. among them is 25—year—old german player pierre filler.

pia is the only woman taking part and also the first professional female ever to compete in the tournament, which this year includes a record prize fund of $1 million. she's been speaking to matt, about making her debut at the event. it feels amazing. i mean, it's the biggest stage in the world we have in our sport. so it's such an honour to be the only female in the tournament and the setup is amazing. so it's really so much fun and i'm really having a good time. when you were growing up and you were taking up pool, how was that received by the male players? so honestly, as a kid, nobody wanted me to be in the team because i was a girl. so my parentsjust keep me motivated to just don't care what anybody says because they say, you know, you've got some talent, you can reach whatever you want, just fight foryour dream. it seems to be that the men always have the edge and no matter what kind of sport it is.
12:54 am
so i really want to change it because it annoys me and ijust want to, you know, show everybody that women can do the same thing. tell me a little bit about the tournament being out in saudi arabia. has that elevated the sport? is the prize money helping? i think so far it's the best thing that ever happened to our sport because it's the biggest prize fund we've ever had in the world pool. and honestly, being a part of it, it's such an honour. and then being here in saudi arabia. before coming here, a lot of people obviously were asking me, are you sure you want to go there as a woman? you know, things over there are different than they are in europe. and, you know, of course, i was thinking about it, but now being here, it's it's ridiculous why people would think that. honestly, i neverfelt so safe and so much respect in my life.
12:55 am
and going forward are the young girls who may be watching you at this tournament. what do you hope they take away from this? i just hope that that they see that if they put in the hours of work and just believe in themselves, that they can reach the same thing as any men can reach out there. theyjust need to believe in themselves, have some motivation, work hard. and i and i hope that's what they're going to take from seeing me playing in those events. well, that's it from us. but you can get all the latest sports news from the bbc sports app or from our website. but for me and from the rest of the team at the bbc sports centre, thanks for watching. bye.
